1...e5
1...e5 is Black's classical response to 1.e4. By mirroring White's move, Black grabs an equal share of the centre and scope to develop some pieces. 1...e5 is one of the few moves that directly interferes with White's plan of playing d4.
But the move's merit is also a drawback; the longer the position remains symmetrical, the longer White will have an advantage by moving first. Also, the pawn on e5 is undefended and it is easy for White to develop in a way that restricts Black's possible responses, by simply threatening to capture it.
Though the move is still common at every level, it saw a modest decline in popularity during the 20th century.
White's responses
The overwhelmingly popular move here, about 10 times more common than everything else combined, is 2.Nf3.
This threatens Black's undefended pawn while developing a piece in preparation for castling.
Another plan is to try and lever open the f-file for an attack on Black's weak f7 point with 2.f4, the King's Gambit.
This was popular in Victorian times and earlier, but Black has now found a few reliable ways of grabbing the proffered pawn and keeping it.
Most popular responses
    1. Nf3 (2. Nf3 - Open Game) Black's valuable center pawn is threatened with capture, but White's pawn remains safe. The question for Black at this point is whether to challenge the White pawn on e4 or support the Black one on e5. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (647980302 games)
    1. Bc4 (Bishop's Opening) This opening is seldom seen in modern play, although White targets the weak f7 pawn and keeps the possibility of playing a deadly f2-f4. Unlike in 2. Nf3, Black's e5 pawn is not under attack, giving him a wider range of choice. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (109947575 games)
    1. d4 (Center Game) This move by White smashes open the center and allows White to develop his pieces with very great speed. Instead of the normal 2...exd4, a countergambit can be tried with 2...f5?!, but this is quite a dubious move and is only reserved for unprepared players. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (69389687 games)
    1. Nc3 (Vienna Game) White's wish is to advance the f-pawn two squares to remove Black's powerful e5 pawn and strike at the heart of his position. Now it is possible to play f4 on the second move, for the King's Gambit, but when no Black piece has yet declared its intentions is there not a degree of hit-and-hope about such a move? If you have the patience to let Black build his bridge before you blow it up: welcome to the Vienna Game, a poison-tipped opening from the nineteenth century. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (68306860 games)
    1. f4 (King's Gambit) White's pawn on f4 is attacked, which is the whole point of the King's Gambit. A gambit - which is not the same thing as an opening - involves a sacrifice of material (chess pieces, usually pawns) for positional gain. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (64725864 games)

White: 40468 (29.91%)
Black: 25846 (19.1%)
Draws: 69001 (50.99%)
3. Bb5 - Ruy Lopez
The essential move marking the Ruy Lopez, or Spanish Game. "It is the double king's pawn opening most commonly used in master play; it has been adopted by almost all players at some point in their careers and many play it from both the White and Black sides."
White threatens to trade off Black's c6-knight, leaving the e5-pawn undefended. It's not an immediate threat, because after 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. Nxe5, Black can win the pawn back with 5... Qd4 or 5... Qg5.
Black can respond in a variety of ways. The most common move is the Morphy Defence 3... a6. This forces White to make a decision about the Bishop - retreat or exchange.
Many other moves are available, some neglecting completely the protection of the knight and the pawn and continuing development.
The opening is named after the 16th century Spanish priest Ruy Lรณpez de Segura.
Most popular responses
  • 3...a6 (Ruy Lopez) By far the most commonly played Black third move in the Ruy Lopez game is the Morphy variation, 3...a6, which "puts the question" to the white bishop. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (25157434 games)
  • 3...d6 (Ruy Lopez) The move is sometimes called the Old Steinitz Defence because it is viewed as not best for black. The e5 is not threatened by Bxc6 so there is no need to defend the pawn. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (19591324 games)
  • 3...Nf6 (Ruy Lopez - Berlin Defence) The Berlin Defence is a common opening often played at grandmaster level. The move 3...Nf6 attacks the center and threatens the pawn on e4. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (19321793 games)
  • 3...Nd4 (Ruy Lopez - Bird's Defence) Black gives up the defense of e5 and instead counter-attacks with a threat towards the bishop. The drawback is that after the knight exchange on d4 Black will have a slightly inferior pawn structure, with a bit of a space gain though. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (5135199 games)
  • 3...f5 (Ruy Lopez, Schliemann Defence) The first thing to note about the Schliemann Defence, formerly known as the Jaenisch Gambit, is that it isn't a gambit. Despite the apparent similarity to the Latvian Gambit, the knight on c6 changes everything. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (1656528 games)

White's responses
White has multiple choices here which can lead to very different games.
Most popular responses
    1. Bc4 (Open Game) And so we reach the Italian Game. White takes aim at Black's weak f7 Pawn. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (179027680 games)
    1. Bb5 (3. Bb5 - Ruy Lopez) The essential move marking the Ruy Lopez, or Spanish Game. "It is the double king's pawn opening most commonly used in master play; it has been adopted by almost all players at some point in their careers and many play it from both the White and Black sides." White threatens to trade off Black's c6-knight, leaving the e5-pawn undefended. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (94166173 games)
    1. d4 (Scotch Game) This aggressive move practically forces Black to play 3...exd4 which releases central tension very early. This should lead to a very open game with a lot of space for both players. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (70832504 games)
    1. Nc3 (Three Knights Game) Black can copy White's moves with 3...Nf6, leading to a very quiet game. Other alternatives include bishop moves : It's also possible to play 3...g6. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (57763747 games)
    1. c3 (Ponziani Opening) The Ponziani is one of the oldest openings. Its plan is to support a later d4, and set several traps for unwitting opponents, but it doesn't pose much of a problem for the defence if black knows the lines. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (13445838 games)

2023.06.01 23:58 jlaudiofan Help Identifying Mod

Hi folks,
I have quite a few mods installed and one of them changes Hyperweave to Spacer Fabric. I have read through the descriptions of them all and I can't figure out which one makes this change.
I have no issue with it being renamed, but for some reason it doesn't change ALL the Hyperweave and the Spacer Fabric is not usable for anything (can't even select it for stockpile filter, doesn't exist).
Thanks!

2023.05.28 12:27 NomadicusRex Amazon issue. Their customer service has definitely gone downhill.

So, I ordered three items, two pairs of shoe insoles, and a pocket knife, for pickup at Amazon Hub lockers. They split the order into two parcels, and the geniuses sent the pocket knife and a pair of insoles in an improperly sealed envelope. The pocket knife never made it to me, and you could clearly see the envelope was not sealed. Amazon refused to send me a replacement pocket knife or refund it, claiming that the packaged "weighed the correct amount" when it left the warehouse and that they had no responsibility once it was handed over to a third party carrier. Except A) There was no third party carrier, it has only got an Amazon Logistics tracking number and sticker, so it was only Amazon drivers transporting it. and B) If there's a problem with a shipped item, it's the seller's responsibility to take it up with whichever carrier they used, and C) If Amazon never provided me the item I paid for, when the parcel was only ever in Amazon's hands, then they have no right to my money.
So, after speaking with four different "specialists", they refused me the refund. I called my bank, showed them photos of the improperly sealed envelope (I had opened it from the bottom since I wasn't paying attention to which end it was sealed at, and I had wanted this particular Swiss Army knife since before my son was born). My bank's investigator agreed, after seeing the photos I took that day of the order packaging, that it was clear that Amazon didn't even make an honest effort to make it right when they failed deliver the product ordered when it was clearly their fault, so they charged back only the amount the pocket knife cost.
Now Amazon sent me an email saying they want me to pay another way. I told them I'd be happy to pay, if they send me the pocket knife I ordered. I am pretty sure they'll ban me, in spite of the fact that I have made 58 separate orders from them this year, 43 orders last year, and 130 orders the year before. I am copying my response to the Jeff Bezos "direct" email address, although I doubt that will make a difference.
Just annoyed, because Amazon used to be so much better...
ON a positive note, I found the Swiss Army knife I wanted at the EZ Pawn by my house, very lightly used, missing the little screwdriver that goes in the utterly unneeded corkscrew, but for 1/5 the cost of buying it new from Amazon. :-) Score!

2023.05.22 05:06 theReal_eZe Need a miracle

I need a miracle. I despise asking for help, especially financial help, but here I am in dire need.
I'm gonna keep this as short as possible to save everyone's time (even the abridged version is long. Sorry about that!). Last year my dad died, my car died, I broke my jaw in 5 places & knocked a bunch of teeth out, had my jaw wired shut for nearly 2 months (it's still messed up & will never be the same), lost my job when I couldn't return to work within 2 weeks of that accident, & moved back home to take care of my mother with rapidly progressing dementia. She was physically, verbally, & mentally abusive, so about 2 months ago I had a complete nervous breakdown and ended up in the psych ward for a couple of weeks. That finally forced my sisters to jump in & put our mom into a memory care home, but her assets had to be sold off to pay for her care. I had taken care of mom for a full year. Once I left my sisters only lasted a couple of weeks before putting her in that facility. So when I got out of the psych ward the house was already cleared out & put up for sale. As a result I'm homeless, jobless, & in debt. Missed an insurance payment while in the psych ward & was promptly dropped, so my license is now suspended. My current car (which is now my home) finally ran out of gas & I had no money to refill the tank. After it sat for a few weeks the battery has died, too. So I'm stuck in one spot with no money for gas or food, no license, & no hope. Oh yeah, plus my storage unit payment is late & I'm about to lose everything I own if that goes to auction. Almost everything in there is stuff I've saved for my kids over the years. There is some stuff in there I could sell or pawn, but I'd have to have a license & gas to get there & deal with that. There's so much more. I've been spending my days scavenging for food, loose change, & partially unsmoked cigarette butts off the ground. I hadn't smoked in about 15 years prior to 2 months ago. Now it's become a crutch to try to keep my hunger & anxiety at bay. I'm also applying for jobs all day every day. It's a catch-22, tho. I need my license reinstated & money for an initial insurance payment Haven't showered in over a month. I already have a case manager with the local community services board & she's helping asich as she can, but the situation is dire & I've pretty much lost all hope that things can get better. I'm happy to provide more info if needed. Please help if you can. I assure you that not a single penny will go towards drugs or alcohol. I have much bigger problems than that right now. Never in a million years would I have thought I'd be in this situation, but here I am. If you can help -- even if it's a tiny amount -- I'd be forever grateful. 2023.05.17 05:32 Negative_Ad8518 Save File getting Corrupt at every New Game please help !

*My game is Skyrim SE Anniversary Edition v1.6.640.0*
I am currently facing this problem where every time I create a New game it automatically gets corrupted.
One of the mods I'm using is Alternate Start - Live another life. At every new game I create Mara's dialogue option doesn't appear, she only says "approach my child...etc. When I check the load there is no image and it says $Save Corrupt.

Update : Issue resolved !!!
What I did to solve this was remove Immersive Citizens, someone told me it was incompatible with AI Overhaul which is in my load order ( If only my dumbass read things properly ) . I just in case also uninstalled FNIS to avoid any conflict with Nemesis, which I also got installed.
I am now making an effort to keep my LOOT order as white as possible. Making sure everything is patched and without conflicts.
I was also told this issue could be a bug that uses inactive plugins to create the Save corruption bug. I don't think this was my case however just to prevent from this becoming the case I'm going to delete all my inactive plugins from my mod manager.
Thank you all who helped me out with this issue, you guys gave me a lot of insight and useful information that I will use to prevent future issues.
Seriously you guys are awesome !! Please keep doing what you do !!
When I quit the game and come back everything is temporarily fine, but a couple of minutes later file gets corrupted again.
I've done some research and I suspected at first that my Skyrim hit the plugin limit of 255, however I'm not so sure, from what I understood it's ESP/ESM that fill out the load order and ESL's don't count.I checked on Vortex and realized that I currently have:
Active: 98
Light: 258
From what vortex tells me I can have a total of 254 plugins and 4096 light, so I guess I still got plenty of space for more mods.Knowing all that I now have no idea what is causing this corruption. Please check my load order below if it helps. I thank you in advance !My active Load Order

2023.05.17 02:13 Negative_Ad8518 Save File getting Corrupt at every New Game please help !

When I check the load this image pops up with the label $Save Corrupt.

Knowing all that I now have no idea what is causing this corruption. Please check my load order below if it helps. I thank you in advance !

Slav Defence after 4.Nc3
Moves: 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3
White develops his other knight onto the c3 square where it increases the pressure on d5 and also exerts control over the e4 square. Although this knight is sometimes developed onto the d2 square by Nbd2, the c3 square is probably slightly preferable since it does not block in white's bishop on c1.
Most popular responses
  • 4...Bf5 This move looks natural, but it allows the annoying cxd5 cxd5 Qb3. This may still be playable after Qb6, though. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (3259770 games)

2023.04.22 15:37 Jump-Ok why those two if checks are running simultaneously in the Tick function

Hi there! I cant seem to fix this problem myself so your help would be really appreciated.
I have an ENUM state called AnimalState and by default is set to AnimalState == EAnimalState::EAS_Roaming. You can see it here on the viewport: https://prnt.sc/EZ-9TmkcNDmY

void ADear::Tick(float DeltaTime)
{
PrimaryActorTick.bCanEverTick = true;
Super::Tick(DeltaTime);
if (AnimalState == EAnimalState::EAS_Roaming)
{
 Super::CheckCombatTarget(); Super::CheckPatrolTarget(); GEngine->AddOnScreenDebugMessage(-1, 2.0f, FColor::Yellow, TEXT("ROAMING"));
}
if (PawnSensing)
{
 PawnSensing->OnSeePawn.AddDynamic(this, &ADear::PawnSeen);
}
if (AnimalState == EAnimalState::EAS_Fleeing)
{
 Super::Flee();
}
}
And this is where i'm changing the state:
void ADear::PawnSeen(APawn* SeenPawn)
{
if (AnimalState == EAnimalState::EAS_Fleeing) return;
if (SeenPawn->ActorHasTag(FName("MainPlayer")))
{
 GetWorldTimerManager().ClearTimer(PatrolTimer); GetCharacterMovement()->MaxWalkSpeed = 0.f;
AnimalState = EAnimalState::EAS_Fleeing;
 isDeerFleeing = true; GEngine->AddOnScreenDebugMessage(-1, 2.0f, FColor::Yellow, TEXT("Pawn Player Seen"));
}
}

Black has a number of options here:
Developing the f8-bishop to allow castling is a logical step.
5...Be7 and
5...Bc5 are both played; Bc5 carries more superficial attacking potential along the g1-a7 diagonal, but Black's natural plan of playing ...d6 will cut this bishop off from the defence of the kingside, plus it means White's natural plan of c3 followed by d4 will come with gain of tempo. Be7 is the most common move for these reasons. The bishop is not necessarily a bad piece on e7, where it supports the knight against any coming Bg5 ideas, and in the long term if Black is forced into playing ...g6 to evict a White knight from f5, it's useful to have the bishop available to redeploy to g7 via f8.
5...b5 plans to develop the c8-bishop on b7 and the f8-bishop on c5, where they both aim at the kingside along adjacent diagonals. The difference between this move and the immediate ...Bc5 is that on ...Bc5 White can play c3 and get the bishop back to c2 in one move; here she must lose a tempo going via b3. Hence ...b5 is more common than ...Bc5.
5...Nxe4 gives the a game a different flavour. Black tries to distract White from her development by snatching a pawn, leading to a more open position. As usual when a player grabs a pawn in the Ruy Lopez, trying to hold on to it turns out to be a bad idea.
Common Moves
Most popular responses
  • 5...Be7 (Closed Ruy Lopez) Black chose not to capture White's e-pawn on the previous move, but the threat still hangs over White's head. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (2002039 games)
  • 5...b5 (Ruy Lopez) (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (1921588 games)
  • 5...Nxe4 (Ruy Lopez: Riga Variation) The natural 6. Re1 is in fact a very minor sideline; not only does it commit the rook to the e-file unnecessarily, but it allows Black's knight to retreat to c5, forcing the exchange of the a4-bishop. If Bxc6 dxc6, Black is then doing rather well compared to the Exchange Variation as the bishop has lost a tempo and the disappearance of the centre pawns favours Black's bishop pair. Ruy Lopez Main Line
Black's move 4...Nf6 threatens White's e-pawn. White may defend it directly with
5.d3, the Anderssen Variation or
5.Nc3 transposing to the Four Knights, Spanish Variation
but both moves interfere with White's natural plan of playing c3 and d4. Without playing c3 and d4 to create some central tension it will be difficult to generate open files for the rooks; additionally White's star attacker currently residing on a4 is liable to get swapped off if it does not have the option of retreating to c2.
5.Qe2, the Wormald Attack, retains the option of c3 and d4, and introduces the medium-term plan of shifting the king's rook across to d1 in a single move after White castles kingside. The downside is that it places the queen on a file that's very likely to get opened, or at least half-opened. Put your rooks on open files and your queen on a closed one!
The main line, and a more subtle way of maintaining material equality, is 5. O-O, after which Black can grab a pawn but cannot hold on to it.

Ruy Lopez: Morphy Defence
The last two moves ...a6 and Ba4 have made no substantial change to the position, therefore Black's options are much the same as they were on his previous move, although they are now known as deferred defences.
4...Nf6 is the most often played move and is referred to as the main line (rather than the Berlin Deferred). It attacks White's currently undefended e-pawn and helps prepare kingside castling.
4...d6 is the Steinitz Deferred. Much more popular than the true Steinitz Defence, it cuts out any threats to the e-pawn and reserves the option of an f5 push.
4...Bc5 is the Classical Defence Deferred. It develops a piece and controls the a7-g1 diagonal.
Hunting down White's bishop now is not wise. If Black plays 4...b5 5.Bb3 5...Na5, hunting down White's light-squared bishop, which is a good thing. However, it takes a lot of time, and after O-O Nxb3 axb3, Black is far behind in development. The game Pavlovic-Agdestein, 2003 continued (after 5...Na5) 6.0-0 6...d6 7.d4 7...f6 (holding on to e5 is Black's main idea in the Ruy Lopez) 8.Nc3 Nxb3 9.axb3 (Black doesn't have one piece off the back rank). Now, White can attack after Bb7 Qe2 g6 Be3 c6 dxe5 fxe5 Ng5 Be7 f4! opening more lines.[1]

(Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (23872312 games)
  • 3...d6 (Ruy Lopez) The move is sometimes called the Old Steinitz Defence because it is viewed as not best for black. The e5 is not threatened by Bxc6 so there is no need to defend the pawn. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (18506201 games)
  • 3...Nf6 (Ruy Lopez - Berlin Defence) The Berlin Defence is a common opening often played at grandmaster level. The move 3...Nf6 attacks the center and threatens the pawn on e4. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (18214263 games)
(Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (4835295 games)
(Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (1546385 games)

(Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (4835295 games)
(Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (1546385 games)

White's responses
White has multiple choices here which can lead to very different games.
Most popular responses
    1. Bc4 (Open Game) And so we reach the Italian Game. White takes aim at Black's weak f7 Pawn. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (168194029 games)
    1. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (88999087 games)
    1. d4 (Scotch Game) This aggressive move practically forces Black to play 3...exd4 which releases central tension very early. This should lead to a very open game with a lot of space for both players. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (66568925 games)
    1. Nc3 (Three Knights Game) Black can copy White's moves with 3...Nf6, leading to a very quiet game. Other alternatives include bishop moves : It's also possible to play 3...g6. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (53949784 games)
    1. c3 (Ponziani Opening) The Ponziani is one of the oldest openings. Its plan is to support a later d4, and set several traps for unwitting opponents, but it doesn't pose much of a problem for the defence if black knows the lines. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (12414586 games)

2. Nf3 - Open Game
Black's valuable center pawn is threatened with capture, but White's pawn remains safe.
The question for Black at this point is whether to challenge the White pawn on e4 or support the Black one on e5.
Supporting the Black pawn
It restricts the f8 bishop to the e7 square, and grants White an advantage in territory, but it builds a fortress that cannot be easily battered down.
An alternative (older) way to play this is to follow up with 3... f5.
Challenging the White pawn
Black wants the same things that White wants, but once again White will be back in a symmetrical position with the advantage of moving first.
This iconic counter-thrust divides opinion like very few other openings.
Has Black lured White into a minefield of tricks and traps leading to an inevitable violent death?
Or has Black given away a pawn for nothing?
Most popular responses
  • 2...Nc6 (2... Nc6 - King's Knight Opening) White has multiple choices here which can lead to very different games. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (380660117 games)
  • 2...d6 (2... d6 .E2.80.93 Philidor Defence) The Black fortress is solid. White should not wait before attacking it, because Black can play 3...f5 if White plays a passive move, which would definitely equalize. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (93722677 games)
  • 2...Nf6 (Petrov's Defence) Black chose to play the Petrov's Defense. This defense is well known to be drawish and boring, especially due to the symmetrical position. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (78549270 games)
  • 2...Qf6 (Greco Defence) Moves: The Greco Defence attempts to defend Black's e-Pawn with the Queen. This defence is rarely seen professionally as White is provided an advantage in development. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (13080021 games)
  • 2...d5 (Elephant Gambit) The Elephant Gambit or Englund Counterattack. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (12552493 games)
