2023.03.27 01:49 God_damn_it_Jerry What has worked for you please help Illinois.
I've had smart start for a little over a year now I have been sober since october 2019. back in September 2022 I had a violation because of mouthwash. They accepted this but only one time I just had another violation because my daughter's thought it would be nice to "make my car smell good" and sprayed cologne alllll over my car including in my device. I violated twice..I was in a hurry because my girlfriends father had just died the day before so she needed me with her to go figure out funeral arrangements so we piled In her car and left, when we got home I blew and it passed. My problem is, I feel like if I say this they are going to think it's completely bullshit. What have you done to get through this?

2023.03.27 01:07 aiden_malecky How I got whatever weird, breathing thing was in my apartment to go away
A little backstory. Since I was about 3 and throughout my childhood I would have sporadic, inexplicable experiences that I still don't understand. Once I moved out on my own, almost everywhere I lived in my 20's had some weird sort of activity. For instance, hearing footsteps and silverware clanking around in the kitchen when I was the only one home kind of thing, being scared out of my wits and running to shut the bedroom door and hide under the covers.
When I was in my late 20's I moved into a studio apartment. Shortly after, my bf and I were taking a nap in the new place and he said lightly, "There's some one breathing in here." And then basically drifted off to sleep. (How he did I don't know). I was awake after that statement, and immediately focusing on whatever "breathing" he was talking about. It sounded like some one standing in the middle of the room about 3 feet from the bed and breathing through their nose. Not from a wall or a device, but just in the middle of a bunch of empty space. I listened acutely, and the more I listened the louder it got. Like take a long inhale and exhale through your nose as loudly as you can, and that's what it sounded like. Then it started changing its breathing pattern to one long inhale, two sharp exhales. It felt like it knew that I was listening and was doing all this to be like, "Yeah, I'm here."
It also changed locations, like it was sort of floating across the room. It started around the foot of the bed and made it's way closer to the head of the bed.
I was annoyed, like I thought for once I could just live in a nice, normal place. It felt like having pests almost everywhere you move. It wasn't that scary with my bf dozing there beside me, but I was living there alone and seriously didn't want to have one-on-one time with whatever this was. THAT was the part I was dreading.
The day after, I came home from work, turned the key in the lock and thought, "Please don't be breathing. Please don't be breathing." As soon as I opened the door I heard one long inhale and one long exhale from the center of the room. My stomach dropped.
Around this time a friend from my hometown I'll call Shane died in a car crash. A group of friends and I piled in my car and drove a couple days to attend his funeral. He posthumously released a CD of his music, which we popped into the car's player for the drive home. Perhaps coincidentally (or not) once that CD was in there the eject button quit working. My friends and I joked that Shane insisted on us listening to him. I didn't mind.
I can't remember if Shane's funeral was before or after the discovery of the breathing sounds, as it all happened right around the same time. I do remember Shane's CD stayed stuck firmly in my car's player for days after I got home from his funeral, the eject button rendered useless, so that was the only CD I could listen to in my car. And I do remember around this time while alone in my place I heard it: inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale..and fear hitting me. At that moment I just KNEW I wanted to listen to Shane's CD inside that apartment, like his music would drown out the sounds of the breathing. I flew down the 3 flights of stairs to the parking lot and got in my car. I turned it on and pleaded, "Please, I really need you right now." Hit eject, and the CD popped right out no problem. Now if that was merely a coincidence, and I honestly don't feel it was, but IF it was, then what a coindidence. My gratitude and relief in that moment were great.
Carrying that CD, I felt like I was armed with protection. Once back in my place, I put the CD on, and it was like immediate comfort hearing Shane play and sing. It felt like my friend was there and I wasn't alone. As I sat and listened to his music, it was like a mental switch flipped and I resolved not to give any more fear or attention to the breathing thing, and I really felt like it was going to be okay. I simply wasn't afraid anymore.
I don't honestly remember if I heard the breathing after that night because I was no longer interested in it or afraid of it. Basically, once I quit focusing on it and fearing it, it disappeared and didn't return. And weirdly, I haven't experienced anything darkly paranormal in about a decade. I'm still wary of it and I'm not ruling it out, but yeah, I don't miss it.

2023.03.27 01:06 sugarbageldonut Losing a parent or loved one at a young age equals a lifetime of “I’m Sorrys,” and I’m tired of it
Kinda a bit of a rant. So my dad died when I was in high school after valiantly fighting Lewy Body dementia for years (same diagnosis Robin Williams had, and does Bruce Willis have it now?). He hadn’t really been able to walk or talk for the 2 years prior to his death, so I was grieving before he passed. Like, he could no longer be a caregiver to me once I turned 15 (he passed when I was 17). In a way, I “lost” my parent then, and we switched roles—I became a young caregiver.
It’ll be 10 years April 22, 2023. The day he died, I was pulled out of class and informed of his passing in a crowded hallway; I had no privacy. I didn’t know how to react. I had a performance that night (I attended a performing arts high school). Being the self-sabotaging workaholic that I am, I performed that night. A video of it exists on YouTube and I literally look like I’m going through the motions; lifeless.
My dad was my life—he was the stay-at-home dad who raised me; he was my only emotional support within a chaotic and unstable household/life.
Anyway, I have probably heard “I’m Sorry” a thousand times from people over the past 10 years. I just realized—I’m always gonna be part of the dead parent’s club, and, thus, I will be hearing those well-meaning 2 words for the rest of my life. I’ll always have this cloud of tragedy following me like an imprinted baby duck follows its mom (parental metaphor intended).
I know folks are trying to comfort me using that common phrase, but I don’t want people to feel sorry for me for the rest of my life. Alas, because I inadvertently fell into my dad’s former vocation (and he was one of the top people in his field before going bankrupt before my birth, lol), I kinda have to bring him up. He always said I would follow in his footsteps and I would scoff at him. He was right. I’ve inherited his skill set. It’s a cruel irony that he’s not here to guide me…
I don’t know if any of this makes sense. I’m a hot mess express

2023.03.27 01:01 adepressedude Have you received a hug that breaks you down?
So, story. ( I’m M 22 )
(Sorry for any grammatical errors, English is not my forte) My grandma passed away a couple of months ago. I had a pretty deep connection with her since I lived in her home for like 15 years or something when my parents divorced. She helped me go thru a lot of tough times when my parents were fighting, when I went thru really deep episodes of depression. -love you, ague- Around mid 2022, she started deteriorating really fast, since she was diagnosed with diabetes and lupus, her health started to suffered dramatically fast. So we where in and out of hospitals for the remainder of the year.
Queue October 1st, after a long battle to get better, I was informed by her primary care doctor that was taking care of us in the hospital that there was nothing else they could do, she needed to go to IC to keep her heart beating for family and friends to come and say goodbye. Couple hours later she passed.
For the most part, I was holding together “pretty good” during the next couple of hours…. meaning destroyed inside, but holding enough to be the strong one in my family so that I could take care of business with hospital and funeral home if needed.
Arriving at the funeral home, all her friends and family came to be with us, pray and all the stuff that comes with funerals. I was obviously getting a lot of hugs, both giving to calm family, and receiving from her friends that I knew really well.
Suddenly, I get to this guy, a random stranger, I assumed friend of hers, that just said “ man, I’m so sorry for your loss “ I can only describe the next seconds as soul shaking, this random dude hugged me, and all of the sudden I broke down immediately I felt every second that that hug lasted I don’t know if it’s the way he hugged me, if I was so emotional in that moment or just the fact that it was coming from a stranger to me.
I cried in 3 seconds more than I’ve cried in years I felt so broken and alone from missing her, but also so loved from this random dude. My legs gave up on me and I fell straight to the ground and couldn’t recover for around half an hour. It was truly magical After all my drama, I just went to this, said thank you for that hug, and basically kept on with my moment, I was due to speak to the attendants so I was rushing a bit.
To this day, 5 months or so later, I keep going back to that hug, that specific moment of the night. sometimes i can’t help myself and cry again to the power of that hug.
Just wanted to tell my story, thanks for reading.

2023.03.27 00:24 stresstavella At my wits end and Don't know what to do. Plz help
Ever felt like you being punished by a benevolent creator? This is literally me rn. For context, currently a 2nd year student, I lost my mum late December last year, and it's been a never ending series of problems after problems. She was our only hope and after loosing her, I lost all hope and spiralled and essentially became an Atheist. I'm still wondering whether this is God's way of punishing me and where everything went all wrong.
As i write this post, my heart is heavy with sorrow and worry. It's not just the grief that weights me down, it's also the burden of caring for my two younger siblings. A sister(Fm3) who currently hasn't been able to get back to school after the half term break due to financial constraints, and the other one(brother) in grade7. My siblings and I have always been close and I have tried being their support system ever since we lost our mom. There's no much hope on our Dad's side(Alcoholic deadbeat) as he's been MIA since 2021 and didn't even attend her funeral.
Things have since shaped up for the worst ever since the Maandamanos started. I hustle on the side as a chapati guy around this small small kiosks you see everywhere and we've been having a really tough time over the past couple of days. I've had to resort to betting and gambling to atleast rale in a few coins but it's caused more harm than good.
As I struggle to make ends meet, I cannot bare to see my sis cooed up at my aunt's place(she is no position to assist her financialy and we've already overburdened as it is), I currently live near campus with a friend who essentially took me in out of pity. My sister is a very bright and ambitious girl and I worry she'll be a target for the boys around the area and could potentially get impregnated. She's always envisioned joining campus and majoring in journalism, but all those dreams seem to be slipping away.
It breaks my heart to see her sitting at home while her friends and classmates move ahead in life. The failure of HELB disbursement really hit us as hard as we were heavily counting on it.
I'm scared of letting her down, that's why I'm reaching out to you today, with a plea for help. I'm only asking for your help to send her back to school. I am aware that times are tough, and there are many deserving causes that require your attention. But if you could even spare a small amount, it would make a difference to us.
I understand that trust is paramount when it comes to donation, and I want to assure you that your donation will be used for the intended purpose. I promise to provide regular updates on my sister's situation if needed if y'all come through for us. Your donation will make a significant difference in our lives, and it will give me the strength to keep going juu wueeh
Thanks for taking the time to read. I hope any one can help us out I'm at my wits end. Help us in anyway you can. Mpesa = @ 0713448092

2023.03.27 00:17 LemTheWise A close friend (25f) has confessed their feelings for me (23m), I feel like she is great but I'm also very aware of some things about her that make me question her. How do I move in this situation?
My close female friend of 10 years let's call her Kayce has just confessed their feelings to me a couple of days ago. It all happened at a mutual friend's B-Day party, Kayce had invited me to go randomly and I was hungry so went for the food but I wasn't really expecting what was to come. Kayce, her friends, the birthday girl, and I were all having fun eating cake, dancing, and doing what people do at parties.
Kayce pulled me to the side after having a brief conversation about overpriced concert tickets but she took me to like the empty backyard patio setup of our mutual friend's house, she sat me down on the outdoor furniture and spilled the beans immediately, she basically told me that she was falling in love with me and that she wanted to be in a relationship with me, she gave me like a list of all the reasons she likes me like my kindness and my respect for people etc. the entire time she was saying all of this it looked like she was gonna be sick Kayce doesn't drink so I was a bit taken aback but it really felt like a genuine thing she had been dwelling on almost. She told me that she didn't want to pressure me into anything and to think about what she told me. After that, she gave the birthday girl her gift from her and me (it was just money), I ate some cake and we did the birthday rites while just staring at each other but she had to leave early because she has nieces and nephews she babysits so her siblings can do date nights and such. I left as soon as I made sure Kayce was gone so I can think about what just happened to me. she texted me by the time I got home, told her I got home safe, and said goodnight like normal but since then we have been sending memes and checking up on each other but I haven't spoken to her seriously about her confession and it been 2 days.
As for me, mentally my head wasn't really in the dating game like that my confidence was kind of wrecked by these really bad dating experiences things like cheating and toxic situations so I wasn't really looking for anything I just wanted to recover lol. I sincerely appreciate Kayce for just confiding in me like that because I always thought she was really beautiful since we were kids but in more of an "outside my league" type of way, I couldn't deny it but at the same time I never thought it was a possibility between us. I feel like this should be a win because one of the most beautiful and understanding women in my life has just told me she loves me but some things bug me about the situation.
- she is a childhood friend, we have played basketball together, and gone to Disneyland as kids she has turned into a man and I've seen her turn into a woman. we have been friends for so long and I really value her friendship because she has supported me through a lot even throughout my dad passing away and being at the funeral for me. she knows my whole family so if this turns out sour in whichever way, it's like my family has lost a daughter, my sisters lose a sister plus her dad is in the military so he might even kick my ass.
- I'm definitely not her type because I'm her friend and I know about her dating history because she has chosen to divulge it as a friend but now I'm the guy she loves and I promise you I feel like like I'm the opposite of all the dudes she has ever dated physically, temperament-wise just everything. And when I say this I mean to say she has openly told things like she only really dates Latino guys (I'm black and she is afro-latino) she says this jokingly but that all I've really seen her date, is guys over 6'3 (I'm 5'11 and she is 6'1), and other preferences that don't really fit.
overall, I feel kinda stuck because we do get along and I do find her attractive, a part of me thinks that the friendship means a lot to me but at the same time I question her attraction to me and her dropping the L bomb on me. I don't know if she would compromise her standards or preferences for me like that especially when I know and she knows we have those conversations. I just don't know what to say to her, I wouldn't mind dating her at all but I just don't know how serious she can be. Any advice pls?

2023.03.26 23:51 cclagator Expected Moves this Week: SPY/QQQ on GDP and PCE plus earnings from Lululemon and Micron
| Market View Last Week – Another positive week and with it lower IV SPY was up 1.4% on the week, less than the 2.6% move options were pricing. However, once again the market had multiple swings and had about. 2.6% range. The week saw an FOMC announcement and some guidance of what’s next, but also saw some mixed signals from Treasury on deposit backstops for the banking industry. The VIX fell from 26 to start the week to 22 to end the week. The banking sector was once again the focus. The regional bank etf KRE had an 8% range for the week but finished the week where it started. XLF saw about a 5.5% range and also finished about unchanged. The 2-year yield closed the week at 3.77%, down slightly on the week and down from 5% on March 7th. This Week – GDP and The Fed’s Preferred Inflation Report SPY options are pricing about a 2% move for the week. Earnings season is winding down and the next one picks up in Mid-April. In between the market will of course be watching bank stress, but this week also sees the GDP print an important inflation report (PCE) on Friday. The SPY is about 4.5% above its 2023 lows and about 5% off its 2023 highs. With IV a bit lower now, the options market is not currently pricing a move to either level until early May: https://preview.redd.it/ljekmo2nm5qa1.png?width=1306&format=png&auto=webp&s=f689babfa50e36f05906e84d48cef75e9bb8f1c5 The Russell 2000, which saw the largest decline of the market etf’s over the past few weeks saw the largest decline in IV last week. 2023.03.26 23:50 heavystax Used a old funeral home for room entry exercises
2023.03.26 23:28 amtheelder Have state laws about funeral practices changed since 1994 in Virginia?
Apologies if this isn't the right place to ask this question; I'm not sure if there is a better place or how to find this information in general. Also apologies for the rather dark topic.
Actual question: In 1994, did Virginia require bodies to either be embalmed or cremated within 24 hours of a death? If so, has that changed since then?
Backstory (keeping it vague for privacy's sake): In 1994, a family member died in a car accident in Virginia, where none of the rest of the family was. Sounds straightforward, but there are a lot of oddities surrounding the death that I don't want to go into here. But one of those oddities is that the coronefuneral home (I'm not exactly sure who it was) informed the family that the body had to be cremated immediately, in less than 24 hours from the time of death, before most of the family had even arrived, because of state law. Weird, but we wouldn't know the state law and no one was really in a position to argue. Also weird, because we are from a religion that doesn't usually do either of those things. But whatever. The body was cremated before all but one family member had arrived, and it sort of became forgotten, especially in the midst of other, more weird things about the death. Sorry for being mysterious, I just really don't want to make this identifiable.
Fast-forward to this year, and family has now moved to Virginia, and an elderly family member passes away, under much more usual circumstances. We were all prepared to have to deal with embalming, based on what we knew about the rules from the experience in 1994. So we were surprised when the funeral director told us that there was no need, even though the funeral was a few days after the death. To say we were confused is a bit of an understatement.
So, did things change? Were we lied to in 1994? What gives??

2023.03.26 23:22 Odd-Psychology-4747 H&M and Coronation Questions
(A few questions were messaged to me. This is a bit more my opinion than usual, but I've tried to stick to the facts as much as possible. This one was a bit rushed so apologies.)
•Have Harry and Family been invited to the coronation?
""I can confirm The Duke has recently received email 'correspondence' from His Majesty's office regarding the coronation," a spokesperson for the Sussexes told ABC News on Sunday. "An immediate decision on whether The Duke and Duchess will attend will not be disclosed by us at this time.""
Sussex spokesperson
"A palace spokesperson confirmed to ABC News Monday that save-the-date emails and 'correspondence' for the coronation have started rolling out, while formal invitations will not be sent until closer to the date."
Palace Spokesperson
https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/amp/culture/story/prince-harry-meghan-invited-king-charles-iiis-coronation-97647565#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16797853902349&csi=1&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com cor·re·spond·ence
noun communication by exchanging letters, emails, or other messages.
The palace has not officially confirmed they were invited. Only that save-the-dates and correspondence had been sent out. The Sussex spokesperson uses that same word. Correspondence.
To me, the Sussex spokesperson has simply said that King Charles office has communicated with them. Not that they reached out and contacted Harry. Not that they invited him. Just communicated. Which would also cover them returning an email from Harry/Meghan. And Harry and Meghan are not gonna say whether they're going or not. The palace has not officially stated they are invited as of this moment. Not that I am aware of.
•Should Harry and family be included in the coronation? Don't they have the right?
"The coronation of the monarch of the United Kingdom is a ceremony (specifically, initiation rite) in which they are formally invested with regalia and crowned at Westminster Abbey."
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronation_of_the_British_monarch https://www.royal.uk/about-coronation It's similar to a new president being sworn in. A coronation is all about the institution of the Monarchy, and the people of the UK and commonwealth. It's like a Graduation, Award ceremony, maybe even a wedding. Just because you're invited, doesn't mean you should be participating.
Being that Harry and Meghan have stated repetitively:
•They were unprotected and not only left in danger by the Institution of the monarchy, but attacked by it. (Every Interview they've done. Links at end.)
•The Institution Isolated, ignored and neglected them. (Every Interview they've done. Links at end.)
•The Institution is racist according to Meghan, and unconsciously biased according to Harry. (Every Interview they've done. Links at end.)
•The Institution routinely collaborates, and leaks to the British press, Harry and Meghan's sworn enemy. (Every Interview they've done. Links at end.)
•His family because of the Institution is nothing but genetic pain, trauma, betrayal, and abandonment. (Again Every Interview they've done. Links at end.)
And Harry stated just 2-3 months ago in his Interview with Tom Bradby that:
"And I sit here now in front of you asking for a family. Not an institution. I want a family. And I understand how that might be hard for them to be able to separate the two, but to me everything that I’ve witnessed and experienced over the years, there has to be a separation."
https://www.nationalworld.com/culture/television/prince-harry-interview-full-transcript-of-duke-of-sussex-itv-programme-with-tom-bradby-3978749 Why would they wish to participate? This is an Institutional celebration, not a family one. An institution they had to run for their lives from. An Institution that feed them to the wolves. An Institution that they say is responsible for every bad thing ever written about them. That has tried to destroy them. That they loathe. (Although they've accused the royal family of the exact same things.) For Harry and Meghan to endorse the Monarchy this way would be a spit in the eye to everyone who supports them.
Their kids are not only too young, but basically strangers. By Harry's own admission in 60 Minutes his family has had no contact with any of them for awhile now. The interviewer for The Telegraph states that their are no pictures of the royals up in Harry and Meghan's home. They are basically Charles Grandchildren in name only.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/prince-harry-interview-bryony-gordon-spare-book/ Their is no relationship with him, the Monarchy, or the people of the UK/Commonwealth. The Sussex children are non-working royals who will almost assuredly stay non-working royals. Very different from the Wales children who have not only established relationships with all 3, but a high probability of continuing to be working royals themselves. They do attend royal engagements with their parents when possible, and are technically classified as working royals.
On the flip side of that, Harry and Meghan now promote pretty much everything the Royals do not. They don't support the same ideas, or ideals. They don't support the Royal family or it's traditions. So why would the Palace invite them to participate, and represent the Monarchy on a global stage at one of it's biggest events? Especially after they left and stated that they no longer wanted to represent the Monarchy.
This is the equivalent of Willie Nelson, and Snoop Dogg asking to not only attend, but to participate in the inducting of a new President at the National Anti-Weed convention.
•How is it different from other non-working royals attending?
Other non-working royals are attending, but not participating (Prince Andrew, Princess Eugenie for example) as of what has been released so far. The only people officially stated to have an active role as of this moment are William and Catherine. Although their have been rumors the Wales children will also be involved since George is third in line to the throne, nothing official has been released that I've found.
Attending, and participating are two different things. Like a wedding if you're in the wedding party you're participating. If you're simply invited you're attending. You won't be involved in the wedding procession, you won't stand up in front of everyone next to the bride, or groom. You won't drop flowers, or carry the ring. You'll simply sit and watch.
And if the family thinks you're going to cause trouble, or act inappropriately, odds are good you won't be invited to even attend. Would you invite someone to your wedding who's going to do nothing, but bad mouth you the entire time? Who's done nothing but bad mouth you for years?
•Would the Sussex's attending the coronation really make them hypocrites?
That's a matter of opinion, but after:

Harry ITV Interview
Harry 60 Minutes Interview

https://www.reddit.com/Meghans_Truth/comments/10ryhv5/research_links_resources/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button And this again:
"At that time I didn’t fully understand how much – or how complicit the family were in that pain and suffering that was happening to my wife, and the one group of people that could’ve helped or stopped this from happening were the very people that were – that were encouraging it to happen." And I sit here now in front of you asking for a family. Not an institution. I want a family. And I understand how that might be hard for them to be able to separate the two, but to me everything that I’ve witnessed and experienced over the years, there has to be a separation."
https://www.nationalworld.com/culture/television/prince-harry-interview-full-transcript-of-duke-of-sussex-itv-programme-with-tom-bradby-3978749 It's my opinion, and just that, that it certainly wouldn't back up what they've been saying all these years.
•How could the Royal Family handle Meghan and Harry attending without causing too much drama?
I'd say the Platinum Jubilee was handled very well, and would be the way to go. If they're there for Charles and reconciliation, that shouldn't be an issue.

2023.03.26 23:07 VanillaWishes2137 Ok, I know that people don't like the idea of Mrs. Afton being the CEO of Fazbear Entertainment, but hear me out.
Sooo...MatPat, huh? Ok, I know that everyone here is outraged that Mrs. Afton is too old to run a company (which I agree with), but I have a THEORY (well, it's more of a headcanon, but in this fandom, almost every THEORY has a something from headcanon). In the book trilogy, we have a character named Sammy Emily. He is the twin brother of Charlie, who (although at first we thought he was murdered by William) left home with his mother after his sister's death, leaving Henry to grieve (actually not surprising when your father builds robotic replicas your dead sister). Sammy, as Henry's only remaining relative, may have inherited the company or simply bought the rights to continue his father's legacy. YES, I KNOW, THE THEORY THAT SAMMY IS THE OWNER OF FAZBEAR ENTERTAINMENT IS ALREADY RUNNING ON THE INTERNET, but it makes sense to me. His age would match, because in the 2020s he would probably be in his 40s, which means he would be able to run a company. After learning about his father's partner's secrets (you know, remnant and stuff), he could contact Mrs. Afton for information and start working with her. Further story is in MatPat's video, but Ms. Afton is not the manager of the company, but more of the women behind the throne (the man behind the slaughter and the women behind the throne lol). One question remains: Why would Sammy help bring back the things that led to his sister's death? Well, there are several options. It's possible the Aftons are manipulating him (with Glichtrap or something) or (which I think makes more sense) they have some sort of arrangement. What if Sammy wants Charlie back? And what if all this Pizza Plex being haunted by the Puppet is the result of these efforts? What if the Security Breach story isn't about one family coming together, but about two families? Or maybe Scott just wanted to drive us even crazier? What do you think?

There is no depth or complexity to it. There’s no meaning to be discerned from it. There is no point to it. It is just melodrama to pad out runtime."
... The third season of
Picard has never really felt like it is about addition, but instead about cataloging and itemizing."
.............
Darren Mooney (The Escapist) once again with a thought-provoking Picard-review:
https://www.escapistmagazine.com/star-trek-picard-season-3-episode-6-review-the-bounty/ Quotes/Excerpts:
"[...]
The first two seasons at least committed to this theme of generational strife by foregrounding these younger characters, by giving them some measure of agency and focus within the plot, and understanding that Picard’s journey was as much about them as it was about him. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill) and Chris Rios’ (Santiago Cabrera) arcs might not have made any real sense, but they were at least character arcs anchored in these characters and performers as individuals deserving space in the narrative.
The third season of
Star Trek: Picard gestures clumsily at this idea of generational tension. After all, Picard’s big character arc over the season involves his discovery that he has a son, Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). In “Imposters,” Picard was confronted by Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes), a young officer whom he treated as a surrogate daughter and who betrayed his trust in her. In “The Bounty,” Sidney “Crash” La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) gets to stand up to her own father, Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton).
On paper, that’s not so different from the theme of generational conflict that played through the previous two seasons of
Picard.
In reality, it is just shadow puppetry. There is no depth or complexity to it. There’s no meaning to be discerned from it. There is no point to it. Like the arguments between Jean-Luc Picard and William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) or Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) in “Seventeen Seconds,”
it is just melodrama to pad out the runtime, a simulacrum of storytelling. After all, neither Jack nor Sidney exists as an actual character.
Picard has heavily hinted that Jack is some sort of sleeper agent, and the show is surely building to a big plot revelation around him. Even Vadic’s (Amanda Plummer) pursuit of him is framed as something less about Jack and more about his father. “That’s no bounty hunter ship,” Beverly explained in “Seventeen Seconds.” “That’s a war ship, with Jean Luc Picard-sized enemies behind it.”
Similarly, Sidney has appeared in most of the third season. However, the audience knows next to nothing about her. Almost every appearance has been about reminding the viewer that she is the daughter of Geordi La Forge. She even says as much in “No Win Scenario.” Literally the only thing that the audience knows about Sidney outside of her father’s identity is that she refers to Seven of Nine as “Commander Seven,” and that was a plot point that revealed the Changeling in “No Win Scenario.”
As such, these conflicts between parents and children ring hollow. The third season of Picard isn’t actually interested in the children as anything more than props. These are abstractions, not people. “I’m not Alandra,” Sidney tells Geordi. “I’m not an engineer like you. You built amazing things, but me? I just wanted to fly them. You took that as me rejecting you, but I always thought it brought us closer together. You would believe in this if you believed in me.”
It mirrors the conversation that Ro had with Picard in “Imposters,” particularly Picard’s assertion, “I believed in you.” Ro’s response neatly prefigured Sidney’s argument to
her father, “Only when it was easy for you. If I meant so much, you would have understood.”
However, there is a strong sense that Picard itself doesn’t believe in these characters. Even Ro is unceremoniously killed off at the end of “Imposters,” once she has vindicated Picard’s faith in her.
These children exist largely to absolve their parents of blame. In “The Bounty,” Jack’s trauma isn’t rooted in any choice that Picard made, but an accident of genetics. It’s not like Picard’s abandonment of Raffi or Elnor. It’s a fluke. “If only you were as good at passing on genetics as you are wisdom,” Jack observes. Still, Picard feels guilty. “The Bounty” ends with Jack absolving him of guilt, “Maybe you didn’t just give me some bullshit disease. Maybe you gave me some of the good bits as well.”
There is a sense that this is about unburdening Picard. “I’ve recently been reminded that we are not in control of what we pass on: strengths, wisdom, talent,” he confesses to Geordi. “And also flaws: weaknesses, sins of our past.” Much like Beverly’s decision to conceal Jack’s existence from him, this argument frees Picard from the weight and consequences of any of his own choices. Even Geordi’s conflict with Sidney is resolved when she reminds him of the virtues that
he instilled in her.
It’s the same warped nostalgia that informs other recent revivals like
Ghostbusters: Afterlife or
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker —
stories about how the older generation bears no responsibility for the flawed world that their children have inherited. It is just bad storytelling, because it means that none of the characters have any agency or need for growth. The younger generation are just props, and the older generation are perfect as they are. There is no story to tell here, but
Picard tells this non-story very insistently.
At moments, “The Bounty” comes close to understanding this contradiction. It’s baked into the log entry from Altan Soong (also Spiner) that Riker plays on Daystrom Station. “Before I gifted Picard my golem, my intention was to live beyond my years — to become my own legacy,” Alton boasts. “Now I see, in my final days, that wasn’t just poor humanity; it was poor science, because evolution is not an act of preservation. It’s addition.”
This is an ironic argument from a show that wrote out all but one of its new characters to make room for a full-scale nostalgic revival of a series that ended almost three decades earlier. It’s particularly pointed in an episode that takes place in
two separate museums to franchise continuity, packed with in-jokes and references. The third season of
Picard has never really felt like it is about addition, but instead about cataloging and itemizing.
[...]
They’re even displayed like models on a fan’s shelf. Seven quizzes Jack on some of the greats: the
Enterprise from
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the
Defiant from
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the eponymous ship from
Star Trek: Voyager, the
Bounty from
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
None of this is about addition. It’s just about showing off the collectibles. In many cases these are copies of copies, not the original: It’s Kirk’s
second Enterprise, it’s the
Sao Paulo recommissioned as the
Defiant, it’s the
New Jersey instead of the original
Enterprise. Confronting Moriarty on Daystrom Station, Riker observes, “This is not the same self-aware Moriarty we encountered on the Enterprise.” So, what is the point of this? It’s not even the thing fans know. It’s just a facsimile.
Even the nods towards the future in “The Bounty” are not actually additions. Bringing Soong’s new android body online (also Spiner), it cycles through a range of personalities: Data, Lore, B-4. This is just an acting exercise for Brent Spiner, no different from what he did in episodes like “Brothers” or “Masks.” Every plan in “The Bounty,” from Vadic’s theft of the body of Picard to Jack’s hijacking of the
Bounty’s cloaking device, is just an act of exhumation, resurrecting the past and parading its body.
Picard clearly still believes in
The Next Generation. If only it felt the same way about the next generation."

2023.03.26 22:30 Calm-Radish8312 Should I cut my parents out of my life?
I (35f) am pregnant with my 2nd and I don't want my children to have a relationship with my parents.
My parents have always been dysfunctional and abusive, but in very different ways. My father has some very bad anger issues. Violent outbursts, lieing, cheating, misappropriation of money... that kind of thing. No addictions or anything that effects his judgement, he's fully sober and responsible for his actions. Mother is chronically co-dependant, mentally unstable, reclusive, has a narcissistic personality, is out-of-touch with reality, lies a lot and has slipped into sort of delusion/fantasist disorder that prevents her from being able to process reality in a sensible way. She's also been on prescription painkillers for about two decades. My grandmother on my mother's side isn't quite as bad as my mother, but there's definitely a similarly narcissistic and out-of-touch side to her.
My parents got together in their very early 20s.
My father was in love with his German ex-girlfriend. He was clear with my mother that he didn't want to settle down or have kids before his 30s. Shortly thereafter my mother fell pregnant with me. My father wanted her to have an abortion.
My mother had a history of inappropriate relationships, including a drug addict who later died and a man who was older than her father. My mother's parents paid the deposit on a very isolated country home to set them up. My father has said he felt pressured by them to get the house.
Something I just found out today is that my father cheated on my mother whilst she was pregnant with me. Shortly after my birth my mother went to her parents wanting to leave him, but they sent her back not knowing how bad it would get. I knew that this had happened, but not that it was because of cheating and violence. My grandma once tearfully apologised to me because of what ended up happening...
My grandma and grandad ended up largely raising me. My father always disliked me and bullied me, quite openly. I've had many, many people come to me as an adult and express regret/apologies/sorrow at knowing how I was treated. My grandparents were the only ones in a position to try and help me, and they did all they could.
At my parents house there were daily arguments, violence, abuses... I feared my father completely. My mother never did anything to try and save me from any of it, she only cared about keeping him. She had no interest in being a mother to me. I was unwanted in that house.
My Aunt briefly lived with us. I remember her kindness and care. She cared for me in a way my mother never did.
She ended up moving away and I rarely saw her.
A few years later they had my brother. A year after, my sister. They got married a month before my sister was born.
My father was much kinder to my siblings. I would get hit if anything went on, even if I wasn't involved or it was out of my control. He would smash my stuff. He would throw me against walls until my nose bled. He would berate me for the slightest errors in front of teachers, family, friends, complete strangers. He had no qualms about showing his complete disdain for me. One time a family friend tried to stand up for me regarding an incident at school (he worked there and had first hand knowledge of what had happened). My father insisted that I was a liar and told him to back off. I got smacked about when we got home because someone had taken my side and tried to correct my father.
But my younger siblings could do a lot more. He would play outside with them. He would encourage their hobbies. He had time for them. They would get birthday parties and presents that they wanted. They would get bought new clothes that fitted and got the bigger bedrooms.
My parents became very conscious that my grandparents were seen to be raising me, so they tried to stop me going there. I felt completely unsafe at home and became very anxious and depressed in that environment. I started self-harming at 12 and had suicidal thoughts at 13/14.
At 15 my Grandad died suddenly. The only father figure I had known. I was broken. My parents took me to my Grandma's and had me stay with her alone for 3 nights. They would come over at the weekend to start funeral planning, but it was my role to take care of grandma in her grief. They never even hugged me.
The following year I had a complete breakdown. Attempted suicide twice, without my parents finding out. Cuts all over arms and stomach. My school raised concerns for my wellbeing and informed my parents without my consent. My parents were starting to receive comments and judgements about their treatment of me. In response, they tried to have me sectioned. My doctor intervened and told them that was wildly inappropriate. I was taken out if school one day a week to spend with a councillor who was assessing me and, by proxy, my parents. The result was that my father was asked to come in and speak about his anger and aggression issues as being held responsible for my breakdown. He told anyone and everyone that I was a liar and trying to ruin his life. As I was 16, there were no follow-ups from either medical or social services. I was stuck living with them. Sometimes my father would try to be nice to me (it would make my skin crawl to be near him I was still so scared of him). But mostly he just hated me. But I was older and had a voice, now. People were noticing how badly they treated me. The violence eased off (except for one time he pushed me through a window).
I finally had the means to leave when I was 19. I've barely spoken to him since. He tries to act like a father, now. It's so fake. He knows I can't stand him, so he knows to stay away.
My mother has been sick since a year after my Grandad died (19 years). Lost her job. Became a recluse. She is a liar and constantly tries to start fights between family, I think because she's so bored. I can't put into words the level of delusion and disconnect from reality at this point. She allowed herself to go down this path, she embraced her own downward spiral. She can be quite vindictive.
All the while there's cheating, lieing, violence and abuse within their marriage. Too many examples to give. Every couple of weeks I hear about something else. My parents hate each other, but are stuck in their dilapidated house in the middle of nowhere. Barely any income, isolated and miserable. As far as I'm concerned they've created their own misery and it's entirely deserved.
I barely allow them around my son. Only when there's other family around, too.
After finding out that the abuses started so early, and my mother stayed with him, allowing him to treat me the way he did (and also being very emotionally abusive herself) has really put me at peace with the idea of cutting them out of my life.
I have a wonderful husband and I love being a mummy more than anything. I can't imagine allowing my babies to go through that kind of abuse. I have a relatively happy life, and have had enough therapy to be able to unwind most of the damage done. I am proud of myself for surviving them.
At this point I can't see any benefit to keeping them at all in my life, they bring nothing but drama and aggravation. They disgust me and I don't want my children exposed to their chaos.
Am I the asshole for wanting to cut them out of my life?
