1912, the year of the Republic. There is a new atmosphere on the land of China: women can go to school, everyone's braids are cut off, people no longer call the master but Mr. and Mrs. Many foreign restaurants have sprung up in the streets of Peiping, where people sit and taste Western food and comment on it in bad Western language. An unusual foreigner came in - he did not wear robes, but light casual dress, he did not wear yellow skin and black eyes but white skin and blue eyes, he did not look decent but down and out. He went over to the counter, ignoring the different eyes of the public. "Here you are," he said. "The steward wants a hamburger." He took some coppers from his sleeve and laid them on the counter. When he got the hamburger, he tasted it and cried: “Sifa! I miss you!”

2023.03.26 11:44 TheButterMouse Steaming Hot

Hotpalming was the final nail in the coffin of my youth. Even with tattoos up my arms and piercings in both ears, the pain this trend involved was beyond my comprehension.
Like all fads, the beauty was in the simplicity. If you had access to a mug, some boiling water, and instant coffee, you could join the club. You did not even need to drink the coffee. Just take the pain.
Most dipped in two fingertips, and withdrew with nothing more than a few blisters. Those who took hotpalming seriously sunk everything up to their wrist into a steaming vessel, and bit back the screams.
This was a shocking sight at first. People shouted, knocked over cups, reached for bandages. The stern faces of medics and off duty police officers became a common sight around coffee stalls. Many cafes suggested a ban of hot drinks for those under eighteen, although this changed when the money rolled in.
Restaurants started providing ice with every order. Kids wore gloves in sunny weather. Parents howled, but what are you going to do, throw away your kettle?
Soon you drank hot chocolate, and rolled your eyes as another group of teenagers staggered off with their hands in cling film. I reckon the fad was weeks away from dying when everything kicked off.
I happened to be in a cafe that day, sipping herbal tea. No-one else was reading a physical newspaper. A few youngsters were hotpalming, but I focused on the football reports.
The nearest kid looked much like the others. Leather jacket. Make up around the eyes. Hand bathing in his drink. Fifteen seconds was usually the limit. But this kid, he kept his hand locked inside the enamel prison, and the clock on the wall ticked round. His face was still, like he was watching birds skim across a lake.
I had never interrupted a hotpalming session, and did not want to be the stick in the mud that my age suggested. But that clock kept ticking, and his hand remained below the surface. Something oily covered the skin of his coffee.
‘Are you ok?’ I said.
‘How is everything so cold?’ He replied, his eyes getting wider.
Gravity still applied. With a swish of my arm the kid was free. The cup shattered on the floor, steam rising from the contents. Clean white bone protruded from under the sleeve of his leather jacket, still held together despite the lack of any muscle. He flexed his digits into a thumbs up, and grinned a weak grin.
Many other patrons got to their feet, and called for help from the counter staff. But the groups of teenagers sat in silence, hands locked inside their drinks. A greasy chip shop smell overpowered the calming scent of coffee beans.
The radio said something was important.

2023.03.26 11:40 GYAAARRRR A debate about tipping…

I’ve had this debate with several friends/family members with very mixed results so now I want to bring it to Reddit.
The question: Should I really be tipping a percentage of the bill?
A bit of background: I worked as a servehost for several months back in the early 2000’s. On slow days, it was barely worth the drive in only to make $20-30 for 6 hours of my time. I didn’t do it long because I hated the inconsistency of the pay.
My stance:
I believe tipping a flat rate is better than a percentage of the meal total. Usually that rate is $10. I might fluctuate a bit for fantastic service but $10 is usually my go to. I figure the server dealt with me for an hour of their time, they deserve at least $10 for the simple task of bringing me my food/drinks. That means if I’m having breakfast at Waffle House and the total comes out to $7, instead of getting $1.40 for a 20% tip, they get ~7x that. I only revert to a percentage tip if we have a larger party (just as most restaurants implement anyway).
This works out to be in the servers favor in 99% of the cases since I’m rarely going over $50, even in nicer restaurants. BUT (here’s where the debate comes in) this doesn’t really accommodate for ridiculously over priced places.
The situation:
My wife and I decided to have breakfast at our hotel’s restaurant in Las Vegas. We were greeted, seated, served, and left in less than 45 minutes. We saw our server 3 times (greeting, order, and bill). Our total was $55 for some avocado toast and an eggs Benedict. I tipped $10. This was NOT okay with my wife. She insisted I leave the correct amount for 20% ($11). I made the change to the bill without much hesitation because what’s a dollar to me in this case? But I had to know why this was such a big deal.
Her argument points:
1: The server at this (or any higher priced) restaurant is EXPECTING more money because of the higher prices in the restaurant. They make their personal budget based on those higher wages. It could mean the difference between making/not making rent one month!
2: We go out to eat for a dining experience, if we are going to be cheap, we should just stay home.
My counter argument:
1: If the servers are so tight on money that my $1 swings them into homelessness, they have other problems. I can’t try to consider the financial status of everyone around me.
2: I feel I’m being generous considering a tip is supposed to be commensurate of the service received, not the food I ate. The cook isn’t seeing any tip money. I feel $10 is a totally reasonable amount to expect for essentially picking up the food and handing to me.
So Reddit, what do you think?

2023.03.26 11:36 ForwardAd5837 New York - Trying not to get ripped off

I’ve long dreamt of going to New York (from quiet rural North-West UK) and have said for years and years, next year I’ll go, next year I’ll book it.
Life always gets in the way, doesn’t it, and for years my partner and I have been in a financial situation whereby if we went away, it was short European city breaks staying in Hostels and doing the backpacker experience. Anyway, I’m 30 next year so want to finally see New York.
We’ve both the final week of November this year off from work and have decided to go to New York. Can anyone help with ideas or tips to keep the cost down? We are fairly flexible to fly from England, albeit Manchester and Liverpool suit best. We’d also prefer to get to NY at a time where the day hasn’t already gone. We want a clean, reasonable hotel that’s easy to get to the main Manhattan sites from, although we don’t need luxury.
• Best places to stay? • Must-see sites? • Restaurant/ recommendations? • Money saving tips?
Ideally we want decent flights and reasonable accommodation for under £3,000 (preferably a chunk less) because I appreciate that it will be expensive when we’re there.
Any engagement or help would be much appreciated! I’ve never been to the States before so am curious, excited and apprehensive all at once.

I'm looking for those type of soup spoons you see in ramen restaurants. But I haven't seen those anywhere. I can buy online but they're really expensive on Amazon and other stores have crazy shipping fees

2023.03.26 11:32 TahnVin How do I(30m) tell my best friend(30m) our employees are scared of him?

We started a restaurant together right after high school. At first it was just us doing everything ourselves. I did more of the cooking and he took care of most of the finances aspect. Then we started hiring some people to help us.
Yesterday one of them told me that my friend shouted at him really loudly and called him an idiot for spilling tea all over a table. Another said my friend screamed at her for writing the menu in incorrect Chinese (Chinese tourists are our second largest target group after nearby university students). They and a few others say that he acts very aggressively when I’m not around.
He used to be hot tempered when we were kids but I really thought he outgrew that years ago. I didn’t see him shouting at our employees myself but since five of them tell similar stories I feel that I should confront him over it and see what he has to say. How do I do that without getting him defensive about it?

2023.03.26 11:23 Fabin419 RI

I am a Sec 4 student and I am aiming to get into RI next year. Currently my L1R5 is 15-2 and I am worried if there is enough time for improvement and if I can cope in RI's environment. I have a few questions about RI and would be grateful if u all could answer them.
  1. How is the physics, chem, maths and econs departments? ( How are the resources, and teachers, distinction rates? )
  2. For PCME students, what time does school usually start and end?
  3. By my current score, is it possible to get into RI? ( I am a PR) how much do I need to work hard for it?
  4. What are the developmental sports in RI?
  5. School culture?
  6. How are classes normally like?( Online, offline, are the notes physical?)
  7. Do I need to wear uniform everyday or can I just wear school t shirt and skirt?
Thank u!!

2023.03.26 11:14 dreamyysweets My dad doesn't notice me

sorry for any formatting issues, am on mobile
for some context, i am nonbinary, so please refer to me as they/them. i am not out to my parents, so they still see me as their daughter.
my (19) dad (51) has never really paid much attention to me, for as long as i can remember. the only times we talk, it's about serious stuff (think cars, taxes, renovating, money,... )
i've found out a few years back that a lot of my trauma stems from being left alone most of my childhood and not spending the time i needed with my parents. now i don't remember much of my childhood other than what i see in pictures or hear in stories, but what i do genuinely remember is that they were always too busy to play games or go places (other than a restaurant we frequented, owned by their friend)
my mom (43) has changed on that front, for the most part, and we sometimes go to the gym together or go shopping in the city. we also talk alot more about personal stuff and some of my interests, and i'm pretty happy with my relationship with her.
my dad on the other hand, never does stuff with me, we barely talk (as i said before) and i barely get a hello from him if we do exist in the same room. i still live at home, and while i spend most of my time in my bedroom, i go down to the living room a few times a day. he's usually at his pc playing games, watching something or he fell asleep and most of the time he's either too invested to hear someone come in or just turns his head to look who came in. when he does turn i say hello but rarely get one back.
since a few years i've been thinking that he didn't want another kid. he has a daughter (27) with his ex that lives alone w her fiance, and she's always seemed like his favorite. i don't blame her in any way, i think she's a fun and nice person but we also never really bonded. whenever there's a family gathering like xmas or a birthday, he's always asking her how she's doing, how this is going, what her thoughts are on that, etc.. all things i never hear or get to talk about. i understand that she lives alone and they don't see eachother that often but they message frequently and i feel like he's more interested in her life than mine.
on to the main reason i'm typing this out. i got my hair cut on monday, it's pretty short and very different from what it was. the day of, when i came home, my dad was also home and once again just turned to see who came in. i thought he noticed and just didn't think much of it, wouldn't have blamed him for that lol. since then, i've been in the living room while he was at his desk. he's asked me if i needed something from the grocery store, looked directly at me while asking. he's been at his desk while i had a conversation with my mom how my day went.
then yesterday (saturday), i just got home from grocery shopping, and he gets off his desk to get some food, he looks at me weird. he asks me "did you get your hair done?" i thought since i just washed it he meant something like that, but when my mom said "it's been like that the whole week" it really sunk in what he meant. he hadn't noticed my hair in a whole week. he tried to defend himself by saying "it's not like i see u much" but i literally saw him every day since monday. i haven't been able to get that off my mind. he really does not pay attention to me. damn.
anyway. thanks for reading if you did. i know i should go to therapy for this but i don't have time or money for that atm. just gonna try move on from this.
tldr: dad was too busy with himself to notice my haircut for a whole week, making me think he never wanted me in the first place.
edit for grammar
