2023.06.10 12:10 UnratedRamblings Can indoor rowing be social?

I've really gotten into indoor rowing over the last few months as a form of exercise, pretty much my dominant form - apart from work (I walk dogs). It certainly beats indoor cycling as a whole-body workout. But I struggle socially, and don't really have people I connect with even in IRL. So it's often hard to be inspired or to share what's happening at times. The times I do its often with just feeling like I'm on the outside looking in as it were.
I come to really enjoy using the realtime loop in ErgData - it's great to have other people around you (even if only virtually), and it really becomes 'alive' when there's a rare person on there with a similar pace to me (currently around the 2:15/2:30 mark, but then I am a shorty and still relatively new haha). Most of the time I'm just pacing myself, a bot or watching people blast past at a pace I can only dream of... And the very very rare time I can get past someone else :D
But there's no options in the realtime loop to connect or partner with people.
I notice in the online logbook there's the Logbook Mail, and training partners, but I can't figure a way to see how that works for people without having IRL connections. I joined a team and affiliation, but they seem to just be a label, a group to contribute metres towards. That's cool and all, but everyone's a stranger to me.
So for a lonely person like me, how can indoor rowing become more social? Is it unrealistic to expect to get some online friendships going out of a love for this activity?
Any insights would be appreciated.

Hi, everyone! I’m now 22w4d,FTM and I just got back from my 9-day babymoon trip in Tokyo so I’d like to share some of my experiences and tips if you’re planning for your own babymoon trip! I’m sorry in advance if this post is too long!
  1. The flight. I live in Asia so the flight from where I live to Tokyo is around 6 hours which is not very long but I did posted a question here regarding the flight, most of you recommend upgrading to BC if possible since it would be more comfortable — and I’m SO glad I did upgrade! I’d say it’s the best decision I’ve made this entire trip! If you have a limited budget, I’d suggest you spend it on closer location, not requiring flying, and a better hotel to stay in. This is actually my first time flying BC with my husband and we truly enjoyed it. I did experience some rib pain which requires me to lie down and I can do that with BC. Also it’s easier to use the toilet as often as you’d like. If you tell the crew about your pregnancy, they tend to give you extra attention like refilling your drinking water frequently which is very convenient!
  2. The hotel. We decided to stay at 3 different hotels but all in Tokyo, all different budgets. From some small 3-star hotel to Park Hyatt Tokyo. I truly recommend you to CHOOSE A BIGGER ROOM. You’ll never know how you’re gonna feel on each day and if you feel like staying in because you got tired from yesterday, a good hotel room really matters. So if possible, spend a bit more on the hotel as well but if you can’t, go somewhere near, book a fancy Airbnb for a few nights would also do the work! I spent a few nights in this extremely small hotel room in Tokyo and I almost cry myself to sleep! I’m not usually picky on this kind of thing but sharing a small bed with my husband while I also feel extra big is horrible—there’s also no bathtub for me to relax in after a long walk. So be extra careful when booking a hotel, no matter how you used to do it in the past, your body needs different things now.
  3. The walking. I consider myself pretty active during my pregnancy. I do pregnancy-friendly workouts 5-6 days a week, including a 3-5k run and I think I can do city walk in Tokyo easily. Turns out, I can’t. I got exhausted so easily I surprised myself. Also I’ve gained some weight so my feet hurt and numb. I had to buy a new pair of walking shoes but they didn’t help much since I walked so much in the first few days and clearly my body needs a fully rest day which I didn’t get. I recommend you to plan your trip ahead, just 1-2 agenda per day is enough and if you still feel fine you can do something extra. I also get used to walking up and down the stairs but please use elevators whenever you can. Sit in a priority seat on the train whenever you can. You’ll thank me later.
  4. The emotion. This part surprises me the most. My husband and I travel together allllll the time. We do big long haul trip 2-3 times a year and other short vacations here and there. We’ve experienced some bickering but nothing huge so we’re pretty confident we’re gonna have just fun on this trip. But nope, I got so emotional so easily about the tiniest things. I felt aggressive and annoyed by everything all the time which makes this trip so hard for both of us. There were good days, of course, but also prepare for the extra emotional days that are out of control. I did try to communicate my feelings beforehand to my husband so he understands what I’m going through but I also know that it’s hard for him to manage the situation (and don’t get triggered by my bad mood) so make yourself and your partner ready for those moments and find a safe, caring, and kind way that works for both of you if it occurs.
To sum up, it’s not as easy as I thought it’d be but it’s totally worth it! I’m glad we did this trip together and I got to experience traveling while pregnant like I’ve been wanting to. So if you’re planning your own babymoon trip, go for it and have fun!

Nowadays i seem to be going by a lot of names: Elwin Lumaris, Kiba Sunpride, Arzan Wolfeye ... sometimes even Rick Roll!
I started playing DnD last year and loved it so much that i'm now in 3 different campaigns as a player and recently started DM'ing my own campaign.
Anyway, as i've been writing all these backstories for my characters, i'm still looking for my backstory. That's where you come in. Is this the moment i find the love of my life? Will the distance between us cause for our own adventure? The good moments, the bad moments, they're all part of the journey towards a good backstory after all.
So as you can see, i'm a big DnD nerd. No worries though, i don't need you to be one too! Other than DnD i also enjoy playing videogames, watching movies, tv shows, anime, reading manhwa, playing guitar, etc. I currently work as a technician for a telecommunications company and i do enjoy my job.
I'm 26, Belgian, 1m79 tall, have a dad body, lightbrown hair, blue eyes, wear glasses and will gladly send you a selfie in dm's.
So what i'm looking for is quite simple; my other half, that's wandering somewhere in Europe. Have at least somewhat similar interests with me and that's pretty much it. I'm looking for someone sweet, caring, honest, loving and all that good stuff.

My first haul already considering placing a second order since my $10 off $30 still works so you know I wanna milk the coupon 🙃 I am so happy I got the last scrub that was on sale and when I got the Last light body moisturizer, because the first one that I found was opened and messed up. I also found the last diamond shimmer spray I’m not the biggest fan of salt water breeze but it’s not bad. It has like a very clean scent, so I’ll probably wear this before I go to work. I’ve been wanting to try amethyst waves for a long time, and I like the scent has more of a berry floral scent. The minis are going into my purse because I go everywhere and need to have a little perfume with me the last one that I used up was strawberry poundcake. I was pretty happy to find some Christmas finds. I have so many sense so from now on, I think my BBW purchases are solely going to be soaps and candles since so I don’t have a many candles from bbw.

I'm 27F. Last time I worked out was during secondary school and part of high school when I was 18, so two hours twice a week. I never liked sports, I have always spent my free time reading or playing games, so at home.
I live a pretty much sedentary life and I'm underweight and very tall. I take walks almost everyday and go hiking twice a month. However when I go hiking I have to rest A LOT and I fall to the ground a lot as well, to the point of sometimes rolling down a hill when we're hiking in "higher altitudes". Thankfully I have never broken a bone or got more than a scratch.
Back when I was a teen, I could do push-ups, sit ups, you name it. Nothing that I did I did very well, but at least I didn't have to stop to catch my breath when going upstairs. Needless to say I can't do push ups or sit ups or pull ups or run for 15 minutes (I've tried).
In my current situation the only equipment I have is a yoga mat that I use sometimes to stretch (I can't stretch much) and two 1kg weights. There are no gyms or swimming pool nearby (I live in a small town). I am moving to a big city in some months so when I save money I will probably try to join a gym so I remain hopeful (I will just need the discipline to go there).
I don't have a regular working out routine because when I've tried having it, I became fatigued very quickly, my whole head burns, and my knees also hurt a lot. Just imagining going through all the pain makes me procrastinate it, but also I'd like to be healthy and be able to go to the store and bring back several bottles of water without having to pause several times on the way home. I'm not asking for a fit looking body, just for a fit body. Do you think that I can ever regain that health or no matter how much working out I get done my body is already that of an 80 years old?
Do you have recommended body weight workouts for a person like me? Sometimes I do workouts from this channel called Senior Shape Fitness. That's my level atm.

In the beginning the relationship was great, no amazing. She was always showing me affection everyday and my love language is affection it always has been. Probably due to never receiving any as a kid. But anyways she always had dinner cooked for me, always kissing me, hugging and just small things she’d always do for me. For me this was new. I never received the love she gave me like anyone I’ve ever been with. I’ve never been lucky with relationships. I’m the guy that would go out of my way to make sure anyone I was with that there happiness was above mine. Always making sure they had everything then need. Not just material thing, more like small things like. Cooking dinner, asking if they need a massage after work, running bubble baths, asking if the need any type of snack, drinks and etc. So for me having someone do that for me was a 180 in a relationship. Pam ( we’ll call my gf Pam) was always all over me. Not only was Pam affectionate towards me with the normal ( hugs, kissing, etc) but sex. I remember some days I would be trying to sleep and she would start trying to have sex with me. It was like 5+ times a week. I’ve never has someone that into me. So I know it’s hard (well I do have them adopted parents, but they treated us so bad. I can talk about that in another post if you want to hear it) So for me I always said if I had a kid I’d treat him better that anything in this world, for Sam that’s what I want. I know I’m not his dad but I want him to feel loved. Even if his real father doesn’t do anything for him.
But back to it. So now we’ve hit a year in and any sort of affection has drop tremendously. I still show her in other was since sex and kissing happens once in a blue moon. Always asking if she needs anything. Just to make sure she knows im still here for her and my affection hasn’t gone anywhere. But it’s all one sided. And im torn on what to do. Yes, we’ve talked about it. Normally every two months I get tired of not receiving any sort of affection or attention. We talk about it, she always tells me it’s her and she has no want for sex or kissing. Then she tells me that I should ask if I want something. I hate having to ask for a kiss let alone sex. I’m coming here looking to vent, looking for advice, hoping to hear from people who have had similar experiences. I’ve been with my boyfriend for ~5 years, he’s a (50s) wonderful man and we’ve built a happy life together. But lately I’ve really been struggling with the way he manages (or doesn’t manage!) his diabetes.
When we first started dating, he did not disclose his diagnosis for… at least a year? I eventually found an insulin pen when I was looking for something and he finally told me. I figured it was his right to be private about it, but in hindsight I think it’s part of a larger trend of denial. He’s on metformin, no longer on insulin, which he says his doctor discontinued.
I do think he tries to eat well, but his sugar addiction is so overpowering. I try to encourage him to make little changes (sugar free Gatorade, diet soda) and while he’s progressing very slightly, he still just eats so much carby, sweet food. He doesn’t reliably check his blood sugars, and his last A1c was 9.4 — this was at least 6 months ago, and his PCP referred him to endocrine, which he has not followed up on, instead saying he would make changes himself. He hasn’t really made changes that I can appreciate, and hasn’t had his A1c rechecked.
He recently got into a bike accident and scraped his leg, then had to be admitted to the hospital with a wound infection. His doctor told him his sugars were very high, likely contributing to the situation. He is home now and struggling with pain and dressing changes. While he was in the hospital, he seemed appropriately alarmed about the situation, but now he’s dragging his feet making follow up appointments and today he came home with a bunch of sweet pumpkin breads from the store, which spurred an argument between us.
I’m so afraid of what’s to come - wounds that won’t heal? Amputation? Dialysis? But I’m also SO FRUSTRATED with him, it’s overwhelming at times. I try to buy healthy food, support him in good decisions, advocate for options like CGM, remind him to follow up with endocrine/recheck A1c, etc, most of which I think he perceives as nagging. It doesn’t help that I work in healthcare, so I think he sees me as lecturing him or treating him like a patient. But it’s hard for me too because I take care of people everyday who have serious complications from diabetes, and I know just how bad it can be. I’ve tried to explain this to him and I feel like he just shuts down. I’m a person who likes to plan and organize, and I just want to set up a million appointments for him and build him a meal plan and monitor his sugars, but obviously none of these things are realistic or appropriate. I know it’s his body and life, but damn I just want to get through to him and get him doing better.
Advice? Commiseration? I’ll take it. It’s 4 AM and I’ve been stewing about this and just feel like I need an outlet.

hello everyone, i came across this subreddit looking for resources and i am encouraged that there is such a great community. i think venting here could help me cope with the emotions i have been experiencing as i want to process this in a healthy and direct way. my ex gf and i are college students in nyc. we met at her apartment at a kickback december 4th of 2021 after i was invited by a mutual friend. after we hit it off (we study similar subjects) we hooked up for a few weeks before she asked me to be her boyfriend. she has very intense anxiety and has panic attacks regularly in addition to many other mental health challenges, feelings of inadequacy, insecurity etc. she was always worried that this would make me resent her or want to leave her however i enjoyed her company and came to love her very much so being supportive of her - while at times exhausting - was something i was happy to do. our relationship was very communicative and our conflict was resolved very healthily. i incorrectly assumed that she valued this aspect of our relationship and all of the work we put into it together to build trust and respect and never though she would cheat on me. a few weeks ago her mother was in town and we met, her mother was complementary of me and at the time i saw our meeting as another milestone and plus for our relationship. her mother does not speak english very well and i have been learning a second language to communicate with her family. for some background my ex got a job at a bar and was working very late hours (7pm-4am) typically and would often begin to slip into substance abuse habits as a result of this difficult work schedule. even though she was in an environment conducive to cheating, i sincerely trusted her and was totally blindsided when i went home for a week (2 days after meeting her mom) and she immediately was showing obvious signs of cheating (one or two line texts and not being reachable for hours in on end which was very unusual) i was suspicious and confronted her but she lied and said she was not. however i knew something was up because every time i mentioned something like a trip or any plans she said we should talk in person. three days ago i confronted her basically saying i knows you aren’t telling me something and i deserve to know this. i accused her of meeting someone after work and she confirmed that she had cheated with a security guard who worked at a bar near hers. i asked if she cared about him more than me and she said “that’s what i’m trying to figure out” - as if there was any possibility of salvaging our relationship lol, when i asked if there was anything wrong with our relationship that drove this, she said that it had nothing to do with our relationship and that it “just happened” which was very hurtful to me because of her unwillingness to take responsibility for the fact that she chose not only to do it but to keep doing it and lie saying it would have been worse had she not told me in person. she said that when she cheated she realized she did not love me and that it showed that she was not in a place to be in a relationship - as if this was all inevitable and not her fault. she even went as far as to try to garder my sympathy saying “i feel like i ruined everything etc” i had so many opportunities to cheat on her and i never did because i was loyal to her and appreciative of our relationship and if i had grievances then i would have broken up with her instead of traumatizing her out of my own selfishness and disregard for her, but hey that’s just me ig. we called and had closure, and then the last thing i texted her was that i forgive her - which was very freeing for me - and at the end of the day this is her problem not mine, and then blocked her on everything. however i have had struggles not with the fact that she cheated on me as much as the feeling that the person i loved was a lie and an illusion, i was very much in love with the person who i thought she was, and it is extremely difficult for me to accept that this person who was such a source of joy and happiness for me is now gone and never really existed. i haven’t been able to sleep at all since this happened and feel like i may be very traumatized by this betrayal. i also can’t cry even though i have been trying. i feel so empty and cold towards everything and have turned to hooking up with as many people as possible including group sex etc etc. i have been able to stay away from substances and intend to let most of this frustration out in the gym and other positive outlets. while this is mostly a vent, i would appreciate any tips - especially for how to cry about this and let my emotions out - and to just calm down my body. ever since this happened i have the alertness level of a person being hunted for sport - this is why sleeping has been so hard - and any tips for fostering this letting go process would be much appreciated.
