Phone call scammers. You know em. You hate em. But at the end of the day, they're just drones like us. Of course, they're on the Chaotic Evil side of the spectrum while we're on the Lawful Evil...what do you mean? You're not? It's really just me?

I mean, I know there's the unicorn. But I was thinking black unicorn, riding down the side of an erupting volcano as we drink, drink, drink from a chalice filled with the blood and tears of our enemies.

Anyway. They often work in call centers. That's the first clue you get about what kind of call you've just answered. You can hear the din in the background. And that means it's either tech support - who you haven't called, by the way - or your company's reservation line - ugh, am I right? - or something else.
Something sinister. Like a third party OTA. Or one of these chucklefucks. The topic of tonight's story/rant.
Well, just like any outgoing sales call center, these people have certain pressures. Gotta make the "sale". Gotta pump those numbers up up up!
I've always hated sales. Boss breathing down your neck. Asking why you haven't been moving units this month. Yeah screw that stress. While I can't say that there's no dollar figure that would induce me to take such a job, I will say that the number is cost prohibitive at least.
So what does this have to do with tonight? Well, I got a call. Our cast includes "The Owner"(dun dun DUUUNNNNNN!) and me(The One and Only Poldaran, accept no substitutions or rain checks).
Let's set the scene. I'm about to make a quick pit stop, so I start walking away from the desk, only to hear one of my least favorite sounds. The phone. I walk over, grab it and... it's a bad connection. No one on the other line. I make sure to let anyone who can hear me know that I can't hear them, and to try calling back, maybe we'll get a better connection.
I decide to wait five minutes. I mean, yeah, I kinda gotta pee. But it's not that bad. Minute four, phone rings again. Different number. Interesting. I pick up and give my Standard Hotel Greeting.
Me: "...and this is Poldaran speaking. How can I assist you this evening?"
TO: "Hello, can you hear me this time?"
Me: "Ah, yes. Sorry about that on the last one. It's still a bit staticky, but I can hear you. What can I help you with tonight?"
TO: "I need to leave a message for Miss . It's very important."
Me, internally: "Ah, he's bringing out the serious voice. Wants to sound like he's commanding someone. This is almost certainly a scam."
Me: "We can do that. Lemme grab a notepad real quick."
TO: "Do you know who this is, Poldaran?"
Me, internally: "Well, I'm certain I do now, but let's see how you decide to play this."
Me: "Sorry, I can't say I do. I've got that notepad and I'm ready for your message."
TO: "This is , THE OWNER."
Yeah, emphasized the everloving shit out of those two words.
Me, internally: "Hmm. Well, definitely a scammer. Haven't done a witch test in a while. Nah. We'll just play dumb."
Me: "Sorry, I didn't quite catch that name. Can you repeat that? Also, maybe spell it for me?"
TO: "THIS. IS. THE. OWNER."
Me: "I still need your name."
TO: "I don't have to give you my name. I am THE OWNER."
Me: "I'm sorry to hear about your dementia. Forgetting our own names is one of those tragedies. Is there someone I can call for you? A friend or family member?"
TO: "FUCK YOU, POLDARAN!"
I'd say someone has a case of the Mondays, but then the rest of you would be legally obligated to kick my ass. Also, it's like, Thursday or something at this point. So the logical conclusion is that scam call center drone is getting shit from his boss about not moving enough units or whatever. Probably missed last month's quota and is looking at termination if he doesn't turn this franchise around.
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy, IMO.

My 7 year old cat was scratching a part of her neck so much that she lost the fur and was creating a wound. I brought her to the local vet who prescribed Atopica as well as a surface treatment for the wound. She said it was normal for there to be nausea, but that it should clear up on its own with continued dosage.
Her first dose was on May 31 and she’s still throwing up almost every day. It doesn’t happen right when we give it to her, more like a few hours later. I tried to call the vets office yesterday but the vet is out until Monday. I just want to check, is this normal? Thank you so much 🙏🏼

My boyfriend is currently taking care of his dad in the hospital and he asked me if I can find something for him. He needed it for work tomorrow kaya he ask me na lang to look for it sa room n'ya. As I was looking through the folders and envelopes, I saw a small notebook. I got curious about it and also, I wanna check kasi baka nakaipit dun yung hinahanap ko. As I opened it, I saw suicide notes. And it's not just one or two. I know that he's really suicidal before I met him, and during our first months in relationship. There's even a time wherein I was called by someone from his place because he tried to kill himself. There are also times na mag memeet kami and I will see cuts on his arms. Anyway, back to the story. I read some of the notes but I wasn't able to finish it because it breaks my heart. I can't stop crying when I read the part where he said, "I know I'm not good at anything or for anyone but I can be good enough for hell, right?"
I know he was raised by abusive parents and I know that he's having a hard time until now. And when I read those letters, I'm not sure anymore if okay na ba talaga s'ya. I mean, di na s'ya naglalaslas, yes. Pero di ko alam if he's really okay na. I always ask him naman how is he. He always say that he's okay. I'm really worried about him and idk what to do. I want him to open up to me. I want him to think that whatever he's thinking, whatever happens, he can always run to me. That I'll always be here.
He was never a perfect boyfriend. He don't open up, sometimes he gets mad for no reason, he also gets insensitive and many other red flags. He's not a perfect boyfriend but nobody's perfect, right? I can't help but think that he's just a lost soul trying to find its way back home. He's a good person. He's just hurt and lost.

Strategists still aren't bullish enough on stocks— at least not according to Fundstrat's Head of Research Tom Lee.
Lee has been sitting on a 4,750 year-end price target for the S&P 500 and watching analysts slowly increase their calls as the S&P 500 approaches bull market territory.
"The sell-side bearishness might be the most extreme I have seen in 30 years," Lee wrote in a note on Wednesday. Despite several S&P 500 target boosts from prominent Wall Street analysts, Lee points out only five of the 20 analysts he's tracking see upside from the S&P 500's current level near 4,300. Morgan Stanley recently called for a 16% decline in earnings by the end of 2023, and investors are net short S&P 500 futures at their highest level since 2007. So as Lee puts it, things seem "gloomy." But there have been some signs of light amid the increasingly murky sky. The team at Goldman Sachs recently cut its likelihood of recession this year to 25%, down from 35%. The firm also believes the current artificial intelligence boom adds a material boost to earnings and therefore the S&P 500, too. BMO Capital Markets chief investment strategist Brian Belski agrees. "The AI hype surrounding the Tech sector is real and likely to propel future growth for many stocks within the space," Belski wrote in a note that included a S&P 500 price target bump on Monday. "So, despite an extremely strong (year-to-date) sector performance, we believe the momentum, even if it slows a bit, is likely persist for the foreseeable future."
Truist Co-Chief Investment Officer Keith Lerner is increasingly bullish, too. He jacked up his S&P 500 year-end "range" to 3,800-4,500 from a range of 3,400-4,300. As Lerner points out, earnings are holding up better than feared with first-quarter earnings declining less than expected and second-quarter downward revisions trending below historical averages, per Factset.
Lerner sees a "meaningful decline" below 3,800 for the S&P 500 only coming if there's a tech sell-off. Otherwise, things may head toward the high end of his range.
"The technology sector is trading at rich valuations, and concentration at the top is a risk," Lerner wrote in a note to clients on Wednesday. "But this is not 2000, not even close, based on valuations and returns. Although tech is extended on a short-term basis and we would be more inclined to add on pullbacks as opposed to aggressively chasing at current levels, we still see the sector as longer-term leadership."
The history of bull markets supports Lee's point that everyone should be expecting higher returns in the second half of 2023 if the S&P 500 can tick slightly higher and close above 4,292.44. Carson Group Chief Market Strategist Ryan Detrick points out that once stocks gain 20% off their lows — officially entering a bull market — good things happen.
Detrick tracked 13 times stocks bounced up 20% off a 52-week low. In the first thee months stocks were usually choppy, with the benchmark index actually falling 0.5% on average in the first month upon hitting bull market territory.
But in the long run, things have been overly positive. After rallying 20% from market lows, the S&P 500 averaged a 10% return over the next six months and 17.7% over the next 12 months.
"As we’ve been saying this full year, we continue to expect stocks to do well this year and the upward move is firmly in place and studies like this do little to change our opinion," Detrick said.

NOTE: As in my last post, everything I'm writing here is my own opinion and not that of the mod team. The idea is to have an open, civil discussion about the state of Reddit, what it means to this unofficial Neovim community and what we, as a group, can do about it.

So, what's going on?

If you have been around for the past few days, you may have seen that hundreds of subreddits will be going dark from June 12th to June 14th to protest against the new, abusive API pricing set to make 3rd party unaffordable for their developers. Reddit's response to their users and developers' inquiries have been passive at best and aggressively dismissive at worst.
Let's face it. Reddit is going public. They are nearing their IPO, which means that they need to set a business models that pleases investors and, let's be honest and state the obvious here: Investors don't care a millimeter about healthy, well moderated communities. It is an exponential growth in revenue that drives them.
Don't take my word for all of this. Reddit wants to charge moderators who use 3rd party apps to keep their site afloat. Have you ever been charged to do free work for a private company? It sounds absurd, but they probably know that mod teams are so ingrained in Reddit's ecosystem and so many people want to mod subs that if current mods leave, many other people will replace them.
Reddit has been changing for years now. I opened my account in 2014 and there were already people around saying that the good old days of Reddit were a thing of the past. I'm part of that opinion now, that's why I'm writing this.

Shutting down this subreddit

As we discussed some days ago, neovim is joining the protest and will shut down along with the rest of the subs. Your reception was overwhelmingly positive and you even suggested some alternatives to Reddit to host this community. This is what I would like to discuss with you guys. But first, please keep in mind that neovim is not an official Neovim community. I personally asked the Neovim team about this a few days ago and their stance is:

• The official discussion forum is their Matrix chat room, which is lined in the Neovim repo's README
• Their business is writing Neovim; not shepherding the community
• They deliberately don't link to unofficial communities
• "What's wrong with vi.stackexchange.com?"

I personally agree with their decisions with some reservations regarding StackExchange that turned out to be validated in less than 24 hours.

Should we stay or should we go?

When I wrote about the blackout, I suggested that you guys have a good one and start searching for open, federated alternatives to Reddit. I hope you took the first one seriously and had a good one. In the comments, some of you suggested alternatives to host this community such as (in alphabetical order): * Discord, which is already messing with their users' names * Discourse, a FOSS discussion forum * Kbin, a federated, self-hosted, Reddit-like site (see kbin.social) * Lemmy, another federated, self-hosted, Reddit-like site, which has a Neovim community in https://sopuli.xyz/c/neovim
In my opinion, if we're going to migrate the community to a different site, we should move it to a federated one. If we move to another centralised site, we will just move the trust to a different corporation that doesn't care for their users. Instead, I suggest that we migrate to a place where we as a community are in control of our own interests and not counting the days until we have to move again.
Now, one thing that I'd like to make clear is that I have no special interest in moderating this or any other community. I don't care if I stop being a mod here on Reddit or in any other site. My main interest here is that the text editor that I love has a healthy online community and thrives for the years to come. This is why I want to make this clear: If we migrate this community, let it be the mods who make all necessary arrangements.
If we want to make a successful migration, we have to be well organised and patient. If we start storming every single possible site, we're going to end up scattered and will probably piss a few admin in the process. Personally, if I have to coordinate with the mods in other sites to make the migration easy for all of you to then be ceased as a moderator in the new site, I will be more thlan happy if it served to keep the community healthy and active.

What are the alternatives?

The first and obvious alternative is that we do nothing. We just keep gathering in this subreddit indefinitely. If this ends up being the case, I will step down as a mod. This is not a threat by any means. I hope that you guys understand my opinion on moderating Reddit by now. I just don't want that, if we ended up deciding to stay, my stepping down was perceived as a tantrum. To be fair, I have been pretty inactive for the past few months, so you shouldn't notice any differences.
Now, if we want to migrate this community, we should migrate to a forum or forum-like site. What I mean is that Discord should be out of the question for this matter. The Neovim team already has their Matrix chat, which I strongly encourage you to participate in, which is another big reason to not create yet another chat-based community. Also, as I said before, Discord is a centralised site with ongoing problems with their users' names, so we are not going to be better there than here.
We can try discussing a migration to Discourse, for which us mods should talk to the admins and see if and how we can merge the communities. Kbin and Lemmy are also good alternatives. I haven't explored any of them much because I'm busy with lots of other things in my life, so I would like to know you opinion about them.
There are probably other sites and projects that can host this community. If you would like to propose any one different than the ones I've said, please do. The more options we consider, the better!

When are we migrating, if ever?

These kind of decisions are not taken lightly and nothing is going to be done unless most of us are on board. As I said at the top of this post, all of this has been my personal opinion. No other mods have been involved in writing this post. Their opinion matters too and I won't personally do anything unless the mod team reaches an agreement.
The discussion will stall during the blackout days, but we can retake it on the 15th. The plan is to have a civil discussion, reach and agreement and always strive to improve this community. This process can take days, weeks or months. What's important is that any changes that we make are for the better. If you guys think that there's no need to migrate, I will respect your decision.

I've been a fan of the game ever since I was introduced to it just a year and a half ago, and I'm itching for a new RP adventure after a long time. I want to RP with someone who can specifically play as Raiden Mei (in her Herrscher of Thunder form). Her character is just amazing and I love the depth to her character, however, not a lot of people can roleplay as her, I find. I am a lit roleplayer who can write 1 to 4 or more paragraphs if need be, depending on the level of inspiration that I have. We can discuss lore first and character developments before we get into the action, as I want both my partner and I to have as much fun as we can. Crit dmg / crit dmg earth skills / crit dmg storm skills/ overpower dmg (the crit without crit) is just one example of the devs pestering my QOL to keep me in game because "oops I want THAT crit affix, not THIS crit affix". AND THEN we get to look for percentage rolls on the right type of affix we need (percentage is fine on its own because that is the normal arpg grind)... . hate that method of keeping us in game. D2 and d3 were both superior in finding ways to keep playtime up and that was as simple as "gearing your follower is equally important". So you'd spend the extra time playing getting your follower gear or cube items (d3) which feels like new loot, instead of spending the extra time looking for the same item as you've found 10 times in a session but had the wrong type of crit dmg, etc.. oversaturating the affix pool, and dumbing down the actual loot pool made things more accessible to be Blizzards best selling game ever, but suffered in the department of most engaging mechanics. D2 and D3 would never have had builds so obvious right from the start. D3 made sets too powerful but changed them every season at least for meta change. The items in d4 unfortunately could be theorycrafted by a first time ARPG player and be almost as good as well rounded players who understand the stats of the genre. rant over; post will likely be gone soon when I regret engaging with the internet lmfao
EDIT: Had 2 mule accounts in D2, was a GR145+ player (never quite made it to 150), and solid hours in D2R but i played since I was 7 around 2003. The games clearly clicked with me, but the method of addiction (let's call min/maxing what it is for a second) seems less potent or rewarding in D4. I doubt I ever put it away forever but longevity feels less apparent. Total account bound legendaries even when found in party is also a final nail in the coffin for us that enjoyed D2 trade economy. Maybe it's because I don't have the time I did before. But it feels less well spent once I'm lvl 70 and don't see a purpose for more strength other than more strength. I admit everything I just said would be even less rewarding without the affix situation so I guess I just like their solution less than other solutions but at least it's something. I guess I just want this crack pipe to hit as hard as the last one and that's my issue, but the issue is there.

I couldnt stop blaming myself.. i knew i couldnt have known. I couldnt have changed the outcome… but i feel like i could have… maybe if i called instead of texted… maybe if i asked more about the lack of a response… I lost you to the one thing I almost fell victim too as well and its been eating me away since then… almost a month until that day comes by… for the third time… and It still feels like some lie someone made up… like Id drive down there and find you in the same place you always were… Ready to talk and play video games again… today was really hard… Everything reminded me of you… Everything hurts… I used to be mad that you left but I learned to understand you felt like you had no choice… I miss you.. Your voice, your dumb jokes, you poking fun at me, you singing that damn song… You said no one would miss you, but I’m still falling apart three years later… god you were so wrong… I started hating your family and the people who made you think that noone cared when there were so fucking many of us… your service was packed… i hope you saw it.. im not religious, but i feel like youd get a kick out of watching your own service cause thats just who you were… You broke my heart in 8th grade, but it doesnt compare to the hell this caused… i can go days without thinking about it. So, I feel absolutely devastated and humiliated. I need advice. I met this guy a little over 2 years ago, we had what you would call a situationship on and off. We split up a few time in the 2 years, but he always came back around, and I should point out, he was always the one to leave, and always the one to come back. He told me he didn’t see a future with me, but we acted as if we were in a relationship, went on trips, saw him every weekend, saw his family, friends, everything a real relationship entails, even went through an abortion with him. About a month ago now he left me for a girl he met at a bar he works at. The night after he met her, and hung out with her, he broke things off, and said we could still stay in contact and then that same day he changed his mind completely. It’s been a living hell, he’s been refusing to talk and anytime he does, it’s to make me feel even worse. He just reached out to tell me he’s now dating her as of 2 days ago. Do you guys think this is a rebound to finally get over me? Or do you think this is a lost cause and I just need to move on for good? If so, how? Please give me advice. I’m 22, this is my first serious relationship, and I’m devastated and lost. I want to hold on thinking this is a rebound and he will realize the grass isn’t greener on the other side, but I don’t know at this point. Edit: Not sure if this matters, but he is 27 and this new girl is 30 and to begin with he told me he didn’t see a future with her either (he always told me he was big on the initial spark to begin with) but he even stated reasons as to why she wouldn’t be someone he wanted to be with, a big one being she didn’t want kids and he does.. but tonight he told me he doesn’t think he’d want kids with her but is still committing to her.

I'm 18, AMAB, gay, and until very recently I was 100% sure I was cisgender, but a conversation with my friend has convinced me that there's a possibility I'm a demiboy or something.
Until recently I thought people specifying that they used he/they or she/they instead of he/him or she/her was redundant because everyone is fine using they/them, but apparently it turns out that's not the case. I also feel the same way as my enby friend regarding certain things I dislike about my body (I'd rather be smaller, dislike any hair besides head + eyebrows, have always disliked how deep my voice is) but those things are probably pretty common for cis people.
I don't like being called a man but I'm fine with being called a boy, which could be from not feeling ready to be an adult or something. I've also always disliked being called handsome but I've never understood why exactly, and I guess it could be a gender thing but I really have no idea, and I've never really liked my birth name but that could be for literally any reason
My nonbinary friend thinks that this is enough to indicate that I'm some form of nonbinary but I'm not sure I agree. I don't want to end up lying to myself and identifying the wrong way just because most of my close friends aren't cis, and I'm trying my best to like actually figure out how I feel. That's where I've run into a problem, though, because I don't exactly know what gender is or what exactly being a certain gender feels like.
I know gender is kinda identified by how you express yourself, but I also know that clothing/hair preferences and pronouns do not necessarily equal gender. So then, what DOES equal gender? I know it's not stereotypical gender roles or masculinity/femininity. I know people say to imagine what gender you'd be if you didn't have a body, and when I do that I come up with "male I guess" but also the gender binary has been hammered into my brain since I was born and so I don't know if that's just based on what I've been told my whole life. I have no idea what the difference between cis male and demiboy is, besides that a demiboy is someone who feels somewhat male and somewhat something else. But I can't compare how I feel to how anyone else feels so how am I supposed to know whether I feel less like a guy than someone else does? I have looked pretty hard but I can't find an explanation anywhere of what gender actually feels like and its starting to make me think that it isn't really based on anything concrete at all and now I'm just really confused. The best answer I could find for this question is "if calling yourself feels right then you are " - is it really that simple? How do I know if a label feels right because I am actually that thing or if it feels right because I want to be more like my trans/enby friends or something? At least I am confident in my romantic orientation because I can base it off of actual feelings I have, but how am I supposed to ever be fully confident in a label that has no basis other than trial and error to see what label I like?
I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how I am either supposed to definitively affirm that I am cis or convince myself that I am not, and whether the stuff listed at the beginning is normal. I know I'm probably way overthinking this but even if what I've been experiencing is completely normal for a cis person I would really like to know what exactly gender is in the first place (please feel welcome to give a very detailed comment of exactly how you know what gender you are)

Speaker: “Why? It is much better to be feared for your position and underestimated for your abilities than the other way around. Especially in this business. I prefer only the ones who work directly with me to know about my true nature. Everybody else can keep thinking of me as the naive, spoiled, oldest son of the city’s most influential family. It keeps them from crossing me without thinking, but makes them careless enough to make mistakes.”

The awkward ways you snuck seductive glances at me, played with your hair, and even tried to establish skin contact were all so obvious. You really only have a pretty face, but none of the skills to use it properly.”

Speaker: “That’s right, those are all pictures of your family’s operations. Not all of them, but definitely enough to earn every single of your members a nice long stay in the crowbar hotel. In the right hands, this folder could implode your entire organization within a single night. It doesn’t stop at just the pictures by the way, there’s everyone’s home addresses, all your hideouts and warehouses, and so much more evidence. And this here is the coup de grâce, la pièce de résistance!”
Listener: *surprised*
Speaker: *laughs* “So you DO recognize it! Yes, that is indeed your family’s ledger, the one that supposedly was burnt to ashes a few weeks ago! Only… that it wasn’t, but that much should be obvious by now, even to you.”

Speaker: “How? Well, I happened to come into contact with a certain someone within your family who had enough reason to be close enough to the ledger to be able to facilitate an accident… Scary, isn’t it? Really makes you wonder who else of your most trusted members is on my payroll!”

Speaker: “What’s going to happen now? I’ll tell you what. First, you are going to take this folder back to your mother. She will think about it for a night or two, just to give herself the illusion of having some control over the situation. Then she will follow the demands I have written down in this envelope anyway, because she does not actually have a choice and she will know that as well as I do.”

Speaker: “You look curious again. Fine, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to tell you, seeing how the demands… involve you. There are basically two demands. The first one is that she is to step down from her position as family head and yield the position to you. I don’t care which kind of explanation or excuse she gives others, as long as it is believable. The second demand is that she personally marries you to me.”

Listener: *stunned*
Speaker: “You might act frightened and shocked right now, but I can see in your eyes that you are beginning to warm up to the idea, little mouse. Now, I don’t know if that is because you simply gave up on resisting me, or if you genuinely find the idea of ruling by my side intriguing, and it honestly does not matter to me as long as the end result stays the same. So why don’t you take a bit of time for yourself and use that pretty little head of yours to figure that part out first? After you take this folder and my demands back to your mother, of course.”
(Part 5: Tone shifts back to the beginning)
Speaker: “If there is nothing else, please let me escort you to your car.”
Listener: *declines*
Speaker: “No please, I insist! It really is no trouble at all. I know that you can find your way back by yourself, but I would be a terrible host if I just sent you on your way from here… And I don’t want to reveal that side to my people just yet.

Heat shimmered off the pavement in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. The tiny town nestled between the desert hills of the Southwest felt like a kiln, and Rory Regan was baking. “Remind me again--” He huffed between words, “--why are we walking?”
“If Destruction wanted to be found, the Lords of Chaos would’ve done it already. If Destruction is here, he’d pick up on a teleport before we stepped through and I don’t want us burning our only lead.” Traci said, adjusting her black sunhat to wipe beads of sweat from her forehead.
“It could be worse.” Sherry said with an encouraging smile. “It’s a dry heat.”
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I miss Gotham.” Rory looked around at the rest of the Shadowpact for a similar discomfort. His sweat was making the rags cling to his skin. “Jim. How are you not sweating? You must be wearing fifty pounds of metal.”
Jim shrugged. “Magic.”
“Of course.” Rory groaned. “Ruin?”
Ruin quirked an eyebrow and planted their feet. They’d been walking around in their signature trench coat for miles and not lost the spring in their step. They curiously pulled a finger along their forearm. “I don’t think I sweat.”
“And I guess you have some magical charm that makes you resistant to heat, Traci?”
“Yeah. It’s called being raised in Nevada.” She snorted. “Hey, Ruin. We need to keep--” Her gaze drifted up to the quaint wooden building they’d chosen to stop. A woodburnt sign hanging above the door read ‘Tumbleweed Saloon & Inn.’ She smiled. “Rory, good news. We’re here.”
Sherry looked over the saloon. Where the others had picked up sand and sweat on the long trek over, she didn’t have a hair out of place. Sherry looked like she’d stepped out of an advertisement. Her only sign of wear was the suspicion sitting behind her eyes. “You really think Destruction is here?”
“I’m not getting my hopes up.” Traci said. “The Lords of Chaos only felt a twinge, but it’s all we’ve got.”
Rory shot through the swinging saloon doors with a speed he’d lost 10 miles earlier. Ruin was just behind him, their pure black eyes pulling in every detail. Half of the space was devoted to racks and shelves of Old West merchandise; cheap hats, plastic guns, and sheriff badges. The other side of the establishment was a small bar and a few tables. The bartender wiped the bored expression from his face as the Shadowpact entered.
“We’re in a real Wild West saloon!” Ruin hurried into the merchandise section.
“Welcome to the Tumbleweed Saloon. What brings you folks into town?” The bartender said.
“I’m looking for a guy, big-looking, probably. Have you seen anyone like that? He might’ve broken something.” Traci said. She wished she had more to go off.
“We get a lot of tourists.” The man raised an eyebrow. “Wait, are you from the Justice Legion? When are you going to send those people from other universes back home? Did you catch the guy responsible yet?”
Traci exhaled sharply. “We’re here about his brother, actually.”
The clatter of hoofbeats on asphalt clicked outside, followed by the heavy footfalls of someone dropping from a horse.
“Do you get many riders out here?” Jim asked. The bartender shook his head and Jim moved a hand to his sword’s pommel. The rider walked to the saloon door. The figure was in shining white leather boots and pants to match. The peak of a stetson of the same color poked out above the saloon doors.
“I know where to find the man you’re looking for.” The doors swung open to reveal the sheet-pale face of White Stag. The only spot of color was a turquoise bolo tie around his neck and the gold-inlay guard of the rapier at his side. His opaque glasses reflected the light. Jim leapt to his feet and pulled the Sword of Night from its sheath with a metallic shtang. White Stag just raised his hands apprehensively. “While you’ve correctly surmised I am interested a rematch, Jim, I think I’d better explain myself first.”
Jim glanced at Traci, who gave him a nod. Jim lowered his sword but kept it unsheathed. “Talk.” Jim spat.
White Stag reached into his buttoned vest and pulled a cigar, then a lighter. He flicked a few times, then held the flame to the cigar’s tip. Once lit, White Stag took a deep drag and blew a ring of smoke in front of his face. “I am here for a duel with the Destroyer of Myrrha.”
"Myrrha's not destroyed!" Jim gripped the handle of the Sword of Night. "I've been locked off from it. I will find a way back!"
"No.” White Stag walked over to the bar and took a seat. He didn’t bother turning around to address Jim. “No, it's not been destroyed yet. But it's Destruction you're after, and you'll find the Endless on the road you take to meet them. Miss Witch would know about that. How well do you sleep at night, Traci?"
The answer was an uncomfortable silence. “How do we know you’re telling the truth?” Rory said.
“I knew to come here, didn’t I?”
“So after I defeat you in this duel, you’ll tell us where to find Destruction?” Jim said.
White Stag gave a thin-lipped smile. “After the duel, I’ll tell you where he is.”
“You tricked us last time. What’s the trick this time?” Jim said.
“The trick? I’m faster than you, Jim. That’s all I need to win. Blades at dawn, at the old train tracks.”
“At dawn?” Jim shook his head. “We fight now. We don’t have time to waste.”
“Where’s your flair for the dramatic, Jim? Let’s let the tension build for a few hours more. It’s not like you’re in a position to dictate terms.” White Stag stood from the bar.
“I don’t know who you are.” Sherry said. “But this sounds like a big misunderstanding. We’re trying to help people.”
“Who I am? I’m the good guy, Sheridan. And you’re the latest person to sign onto the Shadowpact, which must mean you’re trying to help yourself.” White Stag looked at Jim. “Blades. Dawn. Don’t be late.” He walked through the saloon doors and saddled up his horse while the Shadowpact watched in silence.
He’d only been gone a few seconds when Rory said. “Why not fight him now? Force him to tell us what he knows.”
Jim shook his head. “We need to play his games. He knows more than he’s letting on. And he knows about Myrrha.” A hint of desperation crept into his voice. “He could be holding all of Myrrha hostage, for all we know.”
“Myrrha? I’m unfamiliar with this realm.” Sherry said.
Jim rolled his shoulders back, staring down at the ground. “When I was twelve, I went into the back room of a record store and ended up in a medieval world full of adventure and magic. Years later, I mastered the Sword of Night and started using it to move between realities. Last year, I went to sleep in Myrrha and woke up on Earth. I haven’t been able to return there since. I hate to think what could have happened to it without its protector.”
The display racks rattled and Rory raised his fists on instinct. The rags crawled along his body, ready to strike. It was Ruin rushing out of the merchandise section, covered in cowboy gear. A pair of embossed brown leather boots replaced their usual black strap-ups. They wore a ten-gallon hat and held a cheap revolver toy in each hand. “This town ain’t big enough for the six of us!” They said in their best kitsch Western accent.
A hard glance from Jim sent Ruin withdrawing back into the gift shop, holstering their ‘weapons’. Traci spoke quietly. “Why don’t I get us all rooms for tonight. We can rest and be refreshed in the morning.” She looked up at the bartender. He was still trembling from the standoff moments ago. “Six rooms, please.”
A few hours later, Traci was doomscrolling the front page of KordConnect for articles on the Reawakening. A knock at the door pulled her out of it. “Be right there, just-- uh-- meditating!” She hopped off her bed and walked to the door.
“It’s Rory!”
Traci opened the door. He was uncostumed. His sympathetic face was incongruous with the harsh features of the suit of rags. “Hey, Traci. Can I come in?”
“What’s up?” She stood aside and Rory sat on the bed. “It seemed like what White Stag said affected you.”
“That’s what you’re here for? You don’t have to worry about someone hurting my feelings.” She laughed.
Rory relaxed his posture. “Well, I’m glad, but it’s okay if you’re hurting. That… stuff with Dream. You did what you had to. I miss John too.”
Traci’s grin drooped and she let herself fall back onto the bed. She paused, then: “Dream made me an offer. Become his warlock, like Darhk was.”
“His-- his warlock? Like work for him? What are you going to say?”
“I turned him down. There’s always, always some all-powerful asshole fucking with me and my friends. HIVE, Neron, Darhk, Dream. Dream’s just as responsible for what John… became. And if becoming Dream’s warlock means I end up like Damien Darhk, then I just-- ugh!” She grunted, trailing off.
“But, knowing you, you’re wondering if you could beat the Heavenly Host if you said yes.”
“Not just them.” Traci sat up. “Bring Jim to Myrrha. Fix the Reawakening. Actually set up some magical safety nets that I haven’t jury-rigged from lamb’s spit and a spell I found on Quora. Y’know, all of it.”
Rory turned to her and put his hand on her shoulder. “Traci, you’re the best spellcaster I’ve ever met. You literally saved the universe and you’re still doing more. We’re going to win, and we’re going to do it with or without Dream, OK?”
A cool morning held out against the stinging New Mexico heat, the sun not yet peaked over the hills surrounding Truth or Consequences. Jim walked at the head of the Shadowpact. He saw White Stag and his horse for a mile on the approach. It was a huge thing, its coat the same brilliant white sheen as the rest of Stag’s possessions. It’d been hitched up to a railway spike.
Ruin remained in their store-bought cowboy ensemble. The group were all still a minute’s walk from White Stag when Ruin called out, “Why are you doing this?” They hurried forward, breaking into a jog past the group, despite Jim’s protests.
Traci readied a spell, just in case. “You said you’re the good guy. Jim’s not perfect, but he’s good too. You don’t have to fight.” Ruin looked different that morning in a way that was hard to place. Their silhouette was fuzzy. At a glance, they looked vague and undefined, as though it took a few seconds for them to render in view. It didn’t seem to slow them down any, though at times they seemed to wince to themself
White Stag shook his head. “There comes a time in every man’s life when he has to fight.” His voice took on a bit of twang at odds with his usual refined accent.
“But why Nightmaster?”
“Every day Jim wakes up in this world, he hates it a little more. He hates the toil, the uncertainty. Mostly, he hates that here, he’s not the best. He’s a middling swordsman and a below average hero on Earth.”
Jim said nothing, staring daggers.
“And that’s why I want my duel. You don’t belong in these parts, Jim.”
“You’re a madman.” Jim said. “Playing with the lives of innocents in these stupid games.” He approached, grinding his feet into the gravel to keep from lashing out in rage.
“Playing?” White Stag’s faux accent dropped. “‘Well, I suppose I am having a great deal of fun.” A sliver of sunrise poked over the horizon. In a flash that just caught the few drops of light to trickle onto the tracks, White Stag pulled his rapier. It sliced across Nightmaster’s armor like tissue paper, leaving a long red cut across his chest. Jim grunted and drew his sword.
Sherry took a step forward, but Jim held his hand out to stop her “No!” Jim said. “If you intervene, he won’t give us what we need.”
“Old dogs can learn new tricks, it seems.” White Stag lunged, but this time his blade was batted away by the Sword of Night.
Jim went for a riposte. White Stag sideswiped and the heavy broadsword cut through the air, thunking against the railway tracks. White Stag retaliated, raking another slash across Jim’s side. Jim fell to a knee.
“Yield.” White Stag said. He didn’t get an answer. “I think your man is finished.” He turned to the rest of the Shadowpact, giving Jim the opening to grab a handful of gravel and throw it in White Stag’s face. Stag recoiled and Jim forced himself up using his sword, using the momentum to swing it into White Stag’s flank. It only made the lightest of contact, but the pale red of blood spreading through White Stag’s vest was enough to bring Jim satisfaction.
Jim followed up with another attack, which White Stag evaded. This time, Jim sensed anger behind those opaque spectacles. White Stag parried Jim’s next attack. The second his opponent was off balance, White Stag whipped his rapier at Jim’s wrist. He winced in pain. Another well-placed kick from Stag and the sword went clattering to the side. Jim reached after it, in vain.
“Yield.” White Stag said, this time his voice firmer. Sherry had seen enough battles to see the tremor in Jim’s shoulders, to know what he was going to try next. She added to White Stag, “Yield, Jim. We’ll find another way.”
“I… yield.” Jim said with a bassy, hateful tone.
In an instant, White Stag withdrew his rapier and stepped back. “I wish I could say ‘well fought’, Jim.” White Stag brushed the gravel dust away and ignored his wound. “But I did say I’d tell you where to find Destruction.”
“But I lost.” Jim said, confused.
“Yes, you did. And you continue to lose every day you spend away from Myrrha, right?”
Jim stared at the ground, in a haze.
“You’ll find Destruction at Coast City.”
“Coast City? What would he be doing there?” Rory asked.
White Stag shrugged. “Paying his respects? In any case, I think this concludes our time together for now. I look forward to our next meeting, Jim.” He walked away from the Shadowpact, towards the vast empty desert.
“I don’t think so.” Sherry said. “Not until you answer whatever questions Jim has about Myrrha.”
“I don’t think that would benefit anyone, do you? A nice try at reconciliation, angel. Truly, living up to your occupation.” Sherry charged forward, prepared to take the brunt of any attack White Stag was capable of and tackle him to the ground. However, wInstead, when he swiped his sword it did not clash with Sherry; instead, a portal opened in the air.a quick swipe tore open a portal in the air, White Stag stepped through, and it vanished in an instant. Sherry ran straight past her target.
“His sword can open portals too?” Rory said.
Ruin ignored him and went to Jim’s side, helping him onto his feet. ”C’mon, partner.” Jim winced, taking their hand and slowly rising.
“We need to keep moving. I can bind that move, but there’s no telling how long Destruction will stay in one place. Next stop: Coast City.” Traci said.
