Where do I start. If you have a child who has access to a cellphone or the internet you need to read this. For starters, I am shocked at the levels of violence I am seeing in these past five years occurring towards parents. This almost never happened ten years ago when I started my career. 9/10 times, it is because the parents took the child's cellphone away, and that is just terrifying. More passive methods of removing access such as shutting off the child's service and changing the Wifi password howeverDOESN'T WORK. Want to know why? Cause kids are smart as shit. Since COVID, The phone companies have been placing free "hotspots" EVERYWHERE so that kids who can't afford internet access can do their homework and go to online school. The kids just link up to these networks. Get a jammer.
Second, If your child plays the game Roblox, Know that this game is not what it seems. It has MANY games within it and a lot of them are HIGHLY violent. We have had a surge of children coming in recently reporting auditory hallucinations to kill people and their family pets with no prior mental health history, I happen to know that Roblox has a game called "voices" that talks to you as though you are having auditory hallucinations and says quite violent things to you. Without fail these children all admitted to playing the game and admitted to making the whole thing up. Imagine how badly that could have ended for them and their families. . These were children as young as six.
Third if you are still reading, I have had a huge insurgence of very young children getting caught with marijuana vapes, and the parents had absolutely no idea how they got them, children as young as ten years old. these kids had no way of getting to a dispensary, You can buy a visa gift card at CVs with cash. I Listen for frequent coughing coming from your child's room as the vape pens cause this and ALWAYS screen your child's packages.
My final "rant" is not about technology but about something that everybody has in their medicine cabinets. Benedryl, or "Beneys" as they are called in circles of young people. I have had NUMEROUS overdoses that we thought were suicide attempts but it turns out that the teenager was trying to get high. It has become SO popular that there is even a reddit thread for it. Watch for the signs- Active hallucinations, coma like sleeping, shallow or rapid pulse, bluish skin, odd behavior, excessive sleeping, missing benedryl even just one time. Stealing.
Parenting is so much harder these days than it was before technology, I am not blessed with children but I have dedicated my life to the care of their mental health and have worked in this field for twelve years and written numerous articles. I am not intending to scare you or be alarmist but believe knowledge is power and we need all the power we can get in this fight against technology replacing genuine human interaction. I am also not saying that technology is a bad thing, it is one of the greatest wonders of the world and allows children to learn and grow in ways that we never had- i am just stating that there needs to be a balance and as parents it is your job to be aware of the dangers that your children face while interacting with this great wonder of the world.

The Chancellor needed some revelry, and a hot drink. He was back on Kalabria after a whirlwind Concordat, and personally exhausted. Dealing with non clones, especially after they had made their disgust clear, was unpleasant. Using them for money was one thing, but listening to them moan and complain about rights and duties and stations was too much. That old system was dead, killed in the war, and the clones had long short circuited it before. He didn’t care, though. The past was past. Time for the present.
The present had a present from the Vaa. As part of their bond buy, they had provided access to superconductors, and the facilities to make them. Previously, the clones had attempted to develop physical superconductors on their own. These experiments had not gotten off the ground. Their knowledge of physics was limited; despite devoting over a thousand personnel and extensively building out lab spaces, they had made very little progress. Building new laboratory equipment, overhauling their compendium of known information, and literally re-writing the textbooks hadn’t been enough. They had experienced massive leaps in knowledge…which were apparently what the wider cluster could achieve in about four month’s time. Research was not their forte. Learning on the job, using existing resources, and practical engineering were all that they could handle.
And that was what they were doing. After the factories had been set up, the Vaa had found themselves…sidelined. Automation aside, the clones had begun to take over the factories, steadily working their way up and in. Not that the Vaa had minded. The clones had embarked on their first big project: replacing the entire grid with superconducting wires. This had massively increased the amount of power that could be moved around, eliminating the loss of power to conventional friction. So happy were the Vaa that they hadn’t expect the clones’ next trick to come so quickly: developing superconducting motors. These were capable of driving vehicles much more efficiently, reducing the size of battery packs and improving the amount of cargo carried.
‘...and they loved it! Loved! It! Hahahaha! Those fools!’
‘I don’t think that the Vaa really…care.’
‘They’re giving us POWER! INCREDIBLE! POWER!’
‘Yes, Chancellor…’
The Vaa could have done enough to just give the clones superconductor production facilities. They certainly could have packed up and called it good. But they had promised propulsion, and, well…the clones had no chance to develop nuclear fusion on their own. Even as the clones continued to roll out superconductor production and diversify its applications into such things as electromagnetic mass drivers, the Vaa quickly established a set of factories to build fusion reactors. The most immediate benefit of this was to provide Kalabria with access to the clusters’ most useful power source. This took a bit longer than normal; fuel supplies had to be set up, and clones trained to operate these powerful devices. Many were made for the end user to set and forget, simple, helpful–and harder to parse.

Kalabria was doing well-extremely well. No longer capped on power, it was capable of building just about anything it needed to. The clones had their reactors and fabrication facilities, they were steadily ending bottlenecks, and they didn’t even need to worry about pollution anymore. The Vaa had tried to teach the clones how these phenomena worked. Unfortunately, giving the clones more information had just made them more perplexed. Their science was based on empirical observations, reverse engineering, and refinements of the body of knowledge that clones were allowed to have. It had precious little experimental work, advanced mathematics, or actual philosophy of science; and sprang from necessity, not joy.
This was illustrated when the clones attempted to develop superconductor-based electronics. After the usual confusion over quantum mechanics that everyone suffers, the Vaa trying and failing to explain why production failures were happening, they began to realize just how deep the vacuum went. A turning point came when one Vaa mentioned that there was a good way to miniaturize fNMRI machines mid-lesson. The clones asked what NMRI was.
‘The look on their face when they heard that-’
‘The Vaa don’t usually have faces. Not like that.’
‘Then what did they show me, comedian?’
‘A UI. That was a UI. To make it easier to relate to them.’
The clones did not have computing requirements, outside of their legacy personal internet, that needed powerful electronics. Generally, factories used large mainframes, while mini and microcomputers handled most clerical tasks. Networking facilities in bigger organizational levels, replacing government bureaucracy with computer systems, and even simplified self-driving vehicles and continuing industrial automation did not require massive advancements in hardware. Application requirements had all been met by existing chipsets, and the barriers now were in code design, computing theory, and programmer skills. Word of mouth and on the job training made up for the rest.
None of the Vaa wanted to be around self-driving vehicles after that. Nor did they want to ‘burden the spaceplanes too much’. Many were left with a bitter taste profile in their human brains, and a desire to work remotely. Everything had worked out as intended. Clone power problems were solved, economic indicators were way up, and Kalabria’s lights never went out. And yet-well, they had uncovered the secondary rot of the Shining Empire. Information was never to be open, knowledge not to be known. They had helped. It had revealed just how much more help was needed.
‘Ahaha!’
‘Chancellor, I don’t think you should be laughing.’
‘...what?’
‘This isn’t a good thing. Leaving the Vaa disappointed is a bad thing. They genuinely want to help.’

Hi! I've been working on a PbtA/Ironsworn inspired game currently titled "Wyrdlands", and am looking for a little feedback and maybe some inspiration regarding my magic system. In this game, magical power comes from the Wyrd, an invisible matrix of energy that creates and is created by living things. Magic users can draw on three different (though interconnected) sources to cast spells; out of game, spells a character can learn are organized into three schools determined by those sources. From a mechanical point of view, the schools are just an organizational tool; each spell is an individual Asset that the player can choose to buff on a level up instead of taking a new Asset, and there's currently no real benefit or disadvantage for focusing on one school over generalizing. The schools are-
Spiritcalling: Magic focused on the souls of spirits and living creatures. Spells in this school include Psychometry (reading the past of an item by the traces of soul energy/memory left behind on it), Enchanting (infusing soul energy into a nonliving item for magical effect), Adjuring (binding a creature to speak truthfully), Summoning (does what it says on the tin), Evoking (directing your own soul energy outward into magical flame), Siphoning (draining other's soul energy to use yourself), and Name-Speaking (divining a creature's true name for great power over them).
Boneshaping: Magic that manipulates organic materials like plant matter, flesh, or bone. Spells here include Healing and Harm (obvious effect), Lifesense (a supernatural sense for what's living or dead in a local radius), Construct (building tools, structures, traps, shields, etc.), Bodywork (temporary alteration/enhancement of a creature's physique), Golem (simple programmable organic robot), and Shapeshifter (heavy cost of use and dangerous, but Polymorph)
Greywalking: Magic drawing on the liminal spaces of the Wyrd itself. Spells include Greywalk (a low cost-of-use teleport where something will go awry), Blink (higher cost of use, localized, more reliable teleport), Scrying, Visions (could get mystic knowledge from the Wyrd, might get debilitating nightmares), Banish (yeet someone through the Wyrd), Whisper (send a message through the Wyrd), Close to Hand (summon a bound object), and Wyrdweave (isolate or change a fragment of the wyrd itself).
There aren't any spells that manipulate inorganic matter by design, but I'm on the fence about including some kind of telekinesis/Stranger-Things-Eleven style force manipulation. I'm not sure which school that would fit under, which leads to my next question, do I even need the schools? Right now they're really just an organizational system, both in and out of game. An earlier version of the game had both magical and mundane Assets sorted into families called Knacks; on a level up, you could advance your rank with a Knack, granting a stamina cost-of-use discount to all Assets in that Knack. The thinking here was that each Asset in a given Knack relied on the same base skill, so by advancing the Knack, everything using that skill got a little easier. I've cut the Knack system in my current draft in favor of each Asset having specific advancement perks, mostly because a lot of the mundane Knacks had a lot of Assets that weren't super stamina dependent, and seemed like they could be improved in more unique ways. So do I keep the schools? If they're just for indexing, do I add more, specific schools (conjuring, combat magic, warding, mysticism, alteration, etc)? Do I drop the schools entirely, heading the section "Spells" with a little flavor text about where magic comes from? I've been trying to brainstorm more spells, and some of the ones I've come up with I've had difficulty sorting in the system as it is.
I feel pretty good about the base mechanics of my system, resolving dice rolls, tracking harm, stats, etc, and so haven't included much detail on those fronts, but I'd love feedback on the magic system's vibe, how relevant the schools should be, whether the spells as listed feel like they even belong together, other ideas for spells you think would fit, and anything else you guys want to hit me with!

I’m sure many of you have seen the articles and posts on the new housing legislation proposed for this legislative session SB23-213. I won’t get into full specifics, as I think there is great coverage of how transformative it could be in CPR, Colorado Sun, etc. and they get into more detail and review it better than I could, but I want to take a moment to call out the efforts of elected officials who are trying to prevent ANYONE (democrat or republican) from working towards a solution.
While the bill doesn’t necessarily force housing to be built, it removes restrictions on housing type (aka duplexes, triplexes, and thus starter homes can be a thing again) and it removes the power that communities (aka NIMBY’s) exercise to block all these types of more affordable development because they don’t want to allow “riff-raff and ‘poor’ people” into their towns and neighborhoods because they think it will lower their property value.
They hate this bill because it strips them of the ways that they block affordable housing development, and they want to stay in control so they can keep the system rigged against anyone that isn’t rich. In a nutshell, these are the people that embody NIMBYism, and enforce those ideals with their power to impose government roadblocks and restrictions.
In a way, this is the most anti-NIMBY bill for housing because the dirty tricks and absurdly stringent regulations can be totally bypassed. All of the collusion between wealthy NIMBY homeowners and city councils/elected officials, which is very real, can be squashed in the name of equal opportunity. And for the first time, development is incentivized to build more housing types (including more affordable models like duplexes/triplexes/ADU’s) which over time will lower housing costs by creating a surplus of housing supply.
As I mentioned, there are people in positions of power that think it is their right to make housing development and access nearly impossible in their “precious” communities, but then complain that businesses are struggling because “people just don’t want to work,” and won’t look at the fact employees have terrible commutes and absurd rent prices that disincentive them to even bother (I’m looking at you, mountain towns like Steamboat).
But there is one NIMBY who is coming out ahead of the pack with his vindictive attacks, destructive tendencies, and outright dishonest practices. And this jerk is Kevin Bommer, who will henceforth be referred to as Kevin Bummer.
This guy blasts people and legislation on Twitter (his handle is @k_bomb) and is the most perfect NIMBY that I think has ever existed. I’d like to take a moment to list some of his actions and opinions because frankly, these people need to be called out, and I think it’s only fair that citizens know how their elected officials operate, especially when they are as anti-progress as this. If your representative worked against your best interests, and actively tried to make CO a difficult place for you to live, wouldn’t you want to know?
Here is a brief overview of Kevin Bummer, and what a complete bummer he is…
-Kevin is a CML (Colorado Municipal League) leader, and is claiming this will do nothing for affordability. He has been saying this since before the bill was even WRITTEN. -The bill actually has built in affordability and displacement mitigation in the bill, which he won’t acknowledge or discuss. -his argument claiming outcry this does nothing for affordability or for housing —- he clearly hasn’t even read the legislation, and has been arguing these things since before it was written, let alone introduced. -Historically, he has opposed ANY conversations about housing affordability and legislation to combat it because he WANTS NO MORE DEVELOPMENT, PERIOD. -He does not care if you are struggling, and he outwardly fights any attempt to create more affordability, and/or supply. -he has on more than occasion actually yelled “GET OFF MY LAWN” when other legislators have asked to discuss possible changes to the bill to try and get support. (This is not an exaggeration—he is the epitome of angry NIMBY) -Only discusses the bill in bad faith and attempts to put out misleading information to confuse other legislators and voters
The housing crisis—which Coloradans said is the #1 issue we are facing—is so bad that Polis has stepped in to say cities can’t do it alone. He asserts that it needs to be state and local partners working together to negotiate the typical roadblocks that put us in the situation in the first place. Kevin, and CML, are basically “woke” washing affordability concern in order to form opposition to the bill. This is dishonest at best and outright harmful at worst.
Sure, there are cities that have taken the right steps to promote more housing development. And I applaud them. But there are also more projects that have come to a complete halt at the local level due to harsh zoning practices and/or local level politics. Steamboat city council members, for example, won’t even acknowledge that there is a housing shortage, despite the fact that a majority of people working in that town can’t afford to live there, and commute 50+ miles a day. Kevin and CML are not only refusing to acknowledge housing is an issue that must be addressed, they are actively working AGAINST any person (regardless of party) that attempts to work on a solution.
We simply must do better and this bill is a step in the right direction. Don’t let jerks get in the way of good progress. I encourage all of you to research the bill and even read it, and use the power of your voice to call out this anti-housing behavior, and to reach out to your elected officials to tell them to vote YES on 213 to start fixing our state’s housing issue NOW.

The next day, Elzio and Syrene convened with Fathina, who had sent word for them in the early hours of the morning. They met with her in a dimly lit study, one smelling sharply of incense and herbs that made Elzio’s eyes water.
“I have been graced with a dream last night.” Fathina sat across from Elzio and Syrene, almost reclining on a sofa. Her eyelids were puffy and hung heavy over her eyes, and she pressed a bony hand to her forehead. “It was not… pleasant, but it was very telling. It was very real.”
Elzio leaned forward, his own wooden chair not providing quite the same comfort as Fathina’s seat, but then again, he hadn’t just had what appeared to be a very painful vision.
“What did you see?” he asked, keeping his voice low with her apparent headache in mind. “Did you get any read on the enemy heroes? Who they might bring to the battlefield? Did they see you?”
“Is there anything we can do to help with your affliction?” Syrene asked, her voice gentle. “Perhaps one of your healers?”
Fathina waved this off, though she smiled at the offer. “I will presently seek an alchemist to make me something to let me sleep undisturbed. However, I do have some content of interest to share with you. First, I’ve seen several glimpses of their map, and they appear to have dramatically changed the landscape from forest to a more dangerous setting. I saw flame, magma, desecrated land with violent steam fissures and even fire raining from the sky.”
Syrene’s silver eyes shifted to Elzio before returning to Fathina. “I imagine there wasn’t much brush in which to hide?”
“No, I don’t think there was a terrible amount.” Fathina’s eyebrows pinched. “I presume that would complicate your plans?”
It did. “Brush provides a good way to switch doppels with heroes,” he said. “Which is… I won’t say essential but it helps facilitate quick switches.”
“Isla has a Blinding Gale spell,” Syrene said, pulling out a scroll of spells. “And I can use an Illusionary blur to help as well. Martin has Smoke Bombs he can throw as well. So half of your heroes can create their own temporary low-vision environments.”
She was right, and he could work with that. “Good. In fact, we can even abuse this. Have you or the doppels routinely throw down those spells even when you’re not about to receive a swap. Keep them anxious.”
As they spoke, Elzio’s eyes occasionally darted back to Fathina, whose face slowly relaxed into a smile. “You’re not terribly concerned about the actual risk of the environmental dangers.”
“Conscious of,” Elzio said. “Obviously it presents risk, but there isn’t ultimately much we can do short of warn the team. Were the changes arena-wide or just on Deluuth’s side?”
Fathina’s eyebrows furrowed in pain and concentration as she dipped back into her memories. “Just on Deluuth’s side.” She blinked a few times, eyes clearing. “It would be expensive to change the entire map, right?”
“Inordinately.” Elzio let out a breath. “Okay, map down. What else?”
“As far as I’ve seen, most towers shoot one attack every few seconds.” Fathina pressed her hand back over her eyes. “At least, ours always have. Deluuth’s towers sent rapid fire attacks. I couldn’t tell if they were doing full damage with each, or if they were diminished because of their attack speed.”
Elzio looked to Syrene, but she was already scribbling this down. “Noted,” she said.
Again, Fathina looked relieved. Elzio and Syrene’s general stoicism in face of her visions seemed to be reassuring her, which was probably a good thing. The better the morale, the better their odds. Elzio had seen first hand how destructive bad energy could be to a team. Discouragement could tear a team apart.
“Finally, I have these.” Fathina pulled out a sheaf of papers. “I drew these from memory. I apologize if they aren’t terribly helpful. I couldn’t get words, so no stat blocks or classes, but I caught glimpses of the spells they cast and spent much of the morning attempting to draft them with the hopes that you might be able to recognize the spells and deduce something about their classes.”
It was a rather logical step, which Elzio appreciated. He took the papers, fanning them out across the oaken table. The first one his eyes landed on was of a dark skinned woman with wild black hair fanning around her while a huge fireball was summoned at her fingertips.
“Pyromancer?” Elzio said. “Simple enough—”
“She’s also a Hydromancer,” Syrene said. “Blue eyes.” She tapped the parchment, gesturing at the piercing sky blue eyes.
“Good catch.” One Elzio should have caught, but this wasn’t the time for that. “Anything else then? Is she holding any enchanted weapons or… or any weapons in general? Mages basic attack with bolts, but that looks like metal on her belt.”
It took them eight hours to analyze the dozen drawings Fathina had provided them with. After the first ten minutes, Syrene urged the woman to take her leave of them and recuperate on her own. Fathina didn’t want to leave at first, but soon it became apparent that she was simply delaying her own recovery.
Once Fathina was gone, the two fell into a rhythm, one that arrested both their attentions, shutting off the outside world as the hours ticked by. It was a medley of intense conversation, their voices jumbling over each other as they extracted as many minute details from each image, followed by even louder silences as both racked their brains, trying to summon memorized abilities from Syrene’s mind while Elzio matched up visual hints to every class, subclass, stat, modification, or buff he could think of.
They took one break, two hours and twenty seven minutes in, to move to the massive library. From there, the pair prowled the floor, summoning books to their hands whenever a question arose.
Was there a nega-version of Deadly Fate? What was the cooldown on Veridian Slash? How many Opal Statues could be summoned at each rank? Which classes could cast Quick Dash?
With each question, a request was sent to the library staff, who would appear minutes later with a tome or two in hand—and the search continued.
It was headache inducing, and by the end Elzio wouldn’t have been surprised if steam was rising off his or Syrene’s head.
“So, we have a few things we know without a doubt.” Elzio looked over the sheet they’d populated. “They have a mage who’s at least level 18 who’s both a Pyromancer and a Hydromancer.” The size of the spell she was casting in Fathina’s vision was enough to indicate at least level 10, while in another image, she was engulfing an opponent in a Steam Shroud—a variant of Fog Cloud that was only available at level 8 Hydromancy.
“Then they have a Night Specter.” Syrene sounded almost reverent as she spoke of the rare class. Night Specters were a crossclass of Black Magicians and Blood Mages. They required an intense amount of training and discipline, as even taking certain skills could close off the class from a hero. In return, however, once they took on the crossclass, they became deadly. “The Twilight Drain is only accessible to them.”
Elzio’s quill hovered near the Night Specter on his sheet. “He has to be at least level 20. That’s when the crossclass opens. So that’s not good. But at least there won’t be any other tricks up his sleeve. Night Specter’s too restricted for anything else. We’ll know exactly what he’s bringing.”
Syrene nodded. “Then there’s the brawler. Axes, swords, and a spear. I’m not sure why he would take three different classes, all in melee combat. It’s just a way to spread yourself thin. Similar to what I’ve done, I suppose, but I don’t think this man is a teacher of much.”
Her comment was likely derived from the sheer lunacy that emitted from the massive man’s face in every glimpse Fathinia had given them. Then again, most of the Deluuth heroes looked unhinged. In every drawing, every sketch, on every face, it was clear to anyone looking that the Deluuth heroes were enjoying the battle. Not the challenge of a good fight, not the puzzle of outthinking their opponent, not the thrill of winning an engagement. It was pure bloodlust etched in their eyes. Even their support, a Blood Mage-Healer cross seemed to be relishing the deaths of her opponents.
“Someone taught them to be like this,” Elzio said. “So we have the Support, the Night Spector, the Mage, the Fighter, and then there’s the Crossbowman.” The last of the heroes had been the hardest to pin down intel on. They knew he held a crossbow, but none of Fathina’s images had him using any abilities. He just stood in the back of a half dozen images, standing almost still
Syrene rubbed her eyes. “You’re likely right, but the rot in their minds goes back far longer than any individual teacher.” She yawned. “I think it’s time to bring what we’ve discovered to the Genyl heroes. I think they’ll be rather pleased with our work.”

Syrene hadn’t been wrong. The Genyl heroes were almost in awe of how much the two had deduced from just a handful of drawings. Athin and Lin Chian especially seemed impressed.
“Ahhh, these little ones, they’ve given us an invaluable gift.” Lin Chian grinned, her voice booming across the hall. “We might live another day yet!”
Athin nodded, stroking his beard. “We’ll study these classes and the abilities you’ve identified. It’s not every day a hero gets a chance to analyze their opponent. From what you’ve told us of Deluuth’s machinations, however, I would guess it almost a certainty that they have spies among our walls.”
At this, Ilshe motioned to Athin, making a complex series of signs with his hands.
“Mmm, Ilshe says none among our immediate number.” Athin let out a breath of relief as he said this. “So while they probably know our classes and ranks, they won’t know everything we know.”
Elzio’s eyes fell on the waiflike man, who had motioned to Martin, communicating again in whatever sign language their team used.
“And you’re certain he can be trusted?” Elzio asked. It was a throwaway comment, barely even a half-baked thought. Pyrthet and Ythrel had seen enemies right up into their councils, so there was a scrap of possibility that Genyl had a similarly high-ranking traitor. Why not a hero?
But at the mere suggestion that the team’s Support might be a turncoat, the entire room filled with silence—the kind of menacing silence that echoes through a room.
“My brother?” Isla’s voice was cold as ice, and her acid-green eyes burned. “Is that what you’re implying?”
Ilshe was a Psionic. It was this Psionics magic that let him link his team’s minds together, that let him know with full certainty that one was a traitor. So of course the same logic would apply in reverse—the team knew with full certainty that Ilshe was not a traitor.
Realizing his mistake immediately, Elzio held up his hands. “Idle musing, one that makes no sense, of course. Please, forgive me.”
“We don’t—” Lin Chian started, her voice grimmer than Elzio had heard thus far, but Athin held up a hand.
“The boy’s experienced a lot of treachery these past few months,” he said, his voice even. “In most cases, it would be a valid question.”
From Isla’s face, it was clear the woman was biting back words more toxic than her abilities. After another second, Ilshe motioned sharply for the door, and the twins stalked out. The rest of the team followed immediate suit, save Athin.
“They’re a protective group,” the lead said after the room had been cleared. “Isla is the worst of the bunch. The twins were born in Deluuth to parents who had once been citizens of Opyan, a nation conquered long before you were born. Deluuth takes great pride in damaging their conquered citizens, and it was for that reason that the twins were taken from their parents and put to work at a mill hundreds of miles away.” He grimaced as he swept up the sheets, tapping them to straighten the stack’s edges. “After it became evident that Ilshe couldn’t speak, he was considered defective and would have been… culled.” Athin’s voice dropped as he spoke, and Elzio could only imagine the words were even harder to say than hear. “That’s when Ilsa broke them both out in the middle of the night and fled. They just ran. They ran for days, not stopping to eat, not stopping to sleep. Whenever one would falter, the other would carry or drag them until they caught their breath enough to continue. Finally, they managed to cross Deluuth’s borders and found themselves in a small Genyl village.”
“How old were they?” Syrene asked, her voice equal parts gentle and hushed.
“Nine. Looked maybe half that.” Athin slipped the notes into the folder that held Fathina’s other drawings. “Because I have to respond to a lot of the councilors and masters of the city, it’s important I not let my emotions drive me to loyalty over reason. I am very close with the team, but I have to hold them slightly more at arm’s length, to protect the objectivity that comes with planning a battle. But they’re fiercely, viciously defensive, especially of Ilshe. Even twenty-five years later. Implying that one of the twins is working for Deluuth, well…”
Syrene nodded, her eyes soft with concern. “Our comments won’t trouble them too greatly, I hope. Nor will it turn their hearts against us?”
Athin shook his head. “Not at all. It’s just something to keep in mind when dealing with them. And don’t worry about your planning putting them at risk, either. They know the dangers of nexus battle. When it comes to strategy, they are your tools, and they know that.” With this, he gave a curt nod and left the room, jogging slightly to catch up with his team.
Elzio watched him go, a cold pit in his stomach. He knew Deluuth’s reputation but barely had even heard tales, rather less work so closely with people who’d faced that. In fact, Elzio had never really met anyone who’d dealt with Deluuth beyond the traitors they’d executed. Tylin’s butchering had been a bit of an awakening, but even facing a man strung up in his bed chambers didn’t disquiet him the way hearing the twins’ story had.
Separated from their parents just as a show of power. Forced to work hard labor as children, just to keep them helpless. Escaping death at such a young age, death for such a pittance of a reason. No reason at all, really.
It was this last one that stuck with him. Not just what the twins had escaped, but what so many hadn’t. The culling of anyone deemed ‘defective.’
“I can’t think about this.” This time when Elzio spoke, he barely registered that the thoughts were half-formed. They just fell from his lips as his overactive mind took grip of the tale and whirled through his brain. “I need to focus.”
Syrene put a hand on his shoulder. “I know,” she said. “I often have to remind myself just how young you are, just how little you’ve really faced. And these things, they take time to really permeate your brain. Right now, you’re tired. Your mind is beyond fatigued, and it grows late. Get some food and get some rest. Try to avoid rumination, though I suppose if you must…” A thoughtful look crossed her eyes. “Maybe speak to Echo. I think she may have a different enough perspective, it might help you process.”
Elzio nodded but didn’t say another word as he headed from the room. It was good to remember exactly what they were up against and why. Deluuth’s cruelty would make this battle so much easier than the last two in one important way.
He would have no mercy for the enemy heroes.
The twins' story is a little shudder-inducing. Especially for someone like Elzio, who, though he has fought a lot, has been sheltered a bit from some of the true evil that Deluuth is capable of.
Let's see how things pan out come the fight.

Elzio and Echo met back up with Syrene and Carlin at the tavern. Nothing but pleasantries were exchanged as the small team put in orders for food and gathered drinks from the innkeeper. Their conversation was light and shallow, discussing the various neat and interesting things they had found on their first day of vacation, or whatever this trip was supposed to be for them. They had to keep a low profile. Genyl could be crawling with enemies, even knowing Ashlight’s extended alliance.
Both Syrene and Carlin wore similar expressions, expressions that were bursting with stifled information. Elzio was sure his face, however controlled, must have a similar energy radiating off it. Even Echo glimmered with anticipation, and most people couldn’t even see her.
It wasn’t until they were safely in their room that the dams finally broke forth.
Elzio held up a hand the minute they walked in, indicating that he would absolutely be going first. Certainly what the others had to say would be informative, but as far as grand strategy went, the newfound alliance between Ashlight and Echo would be the most groundbreaking.
What was almost disappointing was how little surprise Carlin and Syrene reacted with. Both certainly seemed pleased with the development, a wide smile on Carlin’s broad face and a thoughtful twinkle in Syrene’s eye. But neither seemed surprised.
“Yeah, I was hoping they’d find you,” Carlin said, leaning back on the bed and popping some remaining pork rinds in his mouth. “Turns out a lot of people here have been holding out hopes that we would stop by, make Genyl a similar offer to you made Ythrel. They seemed really receptive to the idea of working together. Lotta folks angry at Deluuth for…” He swallowed, smile slipping. “Various war crimes.”
“Ashlight’s progressive nature is well known among her people.” Syrene smiled approvingly as she leafed through one of the books she’d borrowed from the library. “It wasn’t the primary thing I looked at while there, but I wanted to check out a few history books while perusing the shelves. At first they kept this a secret, afraid that other nations would try to attack them, steal their resources. After a while, however, it became obvious that even the kingdoms with the most complex spy networks never paid any mind to their advanced technology, quality of life, so on. If what you’re saying is right, then it would be because no other nation has cared enough to try.”
“Even more than not caring, they actively don’t want to.” Carlin’s voice grew louder. “All the stuff Tylin and I worked for, a better world for the people, he always said bureaucracy got in the way. Process upon process, hearings and endless arguing, and it turns out in the end, they just didn’t want the country to improve. War and conquest were all that mattered.”
Elzio held up a hand. “Don’t raise your voice too much. We may be tentatively aligned, but there remains more to be discussed before we want any casual listener to overhear our discussions. And none of this precludes spies or enemy agents.”
Carlin exhaled, and as his lungs deflated, so too did his body. “I’m sorry. You’re right. I just… I don’t know. It feels like we’re fighting against something too big. What if the people just turn and worship another nexus? What if they reject any kind of civil rule? What if it was all for nothing?”
Syrene stood up from the desk, settling next to him on the bed. She placed a hand on his arm, her thin, scholar’s hands pale against his broad shoulder.
“You’re exactly where you should be,” she said. “What you’re doing here, it might not have been what you thought progress looked like, but it is where you need to be.”
“Yeah. Yeah I’m in the exact right place to change the world.” Carlin sounded the opposite of cheered by this. “But at what cost? What did I have to lose to get here? If we die here, none of it was worth it.”
Revolutions do not spread without casualties. Echo’s light flickered back to her as she grew back to her normal size. Your brother did not want what happened to him, of this I am certain. But what you have made out of it, what you are doing now? That is of merit. You have spent the early parts of your life learning what you find interesting, practicing skills you enjoy, with the faint idea that one day you may be able to use them. You did what you wanted. Her voice wasn’t scolding, but Carlin winced under her words regardless. All that time, your brother toiled to make a change in the world, one that would last. He laid out the road for you to walk. Walk it.
Carlin blinked furiously, before wiping a hand against his eyes and sighing. “You’re right. I know you are.”
“Change takes time,” Elzio said. He hadn’t known quite how to hop into the conversation before, not without being tactless. Echo hadn’t either, but that hadn’t stopped her. “Maybe you’re right, maybe this generation of people will reject their freedom because they lost their nexi. But unless another nexus does come around, that discontent will fade.”
“And what are the odds that happens?” Carlin’s face, now hopeful, turned to Echo.
I do not know. I would have to meditate on it.
This was, perhaps, the most fascinating thing about Echo. Her knowledge of nexi was innate and required her pondering to unlock. Neither Echo nor Elzio knew if this unlocking came with levels or if it simply was a matter of meditation.
“Let’s keep this moving,” Elzio said. “I think we have to take up Ashlight on her offer. We can’t solo Deluuth.”
“Right.” Carlin took a steadying breath. “Then if we do defeat Deluuth, that would leave Genyl in charge of the continent?”
This wasn’t something Elzio had considered before, but the idea wasn’t unpleasant by any means. “I suppose it would.”
Do you think this is all a ploy from Ashlight to gain control? Echo’s question was directed solely to Elzio.
That would be a century long con, he responded. Unless you’re claiming her attempts at creating peace and progress in Genyl was just to coax other nations into joining her, but given how unsuccessful that was until we arrived, I feel as though it isn’t.
Unless she did see us coming and simply lied about us being blindspots. Echo wasn’t letting this go.
By that argument, Elzio said, everything we’re doing is playing into her hand! There’s no way to win if you assume they’re lying about everything and this is all some power play.
That is how we must think if dealing with nexi. You will learn that in time.
Elzio didn’t respond except to sigh, a little too loud.
“I don’t!” Carlin put up his hands. “Look, the people here have been happy since Ashlight first took on the role of advisor. That’s been almost two centuries.”
Damn. While Elzio was talking with Echo, the conversation with Carlin and Syrene had continued, and now he was lost.
“Sorry, no, I wasn’t annoyed with you,” Elzio said, massaging his temples. “I think leaving the continent in Ashlight’s hands is wise.”
Syrene smiled, tipping her head. “Of course. We were just speculating whether Fathina had a child, or if the gift had been passed down otherwise.”
Ah, so that’s where they’d taken the conversation. It was a good question. “I’ll ask when we return. But even if they don’t, that doesn’t mean Ashlight wouldn’t be a good steward over the people.”
“Would you all mind if I actually went and asked some more direct questions tomorrow?” Carlin asked, yawning. “Now that we know they actually want to work with us, I don’t need to be nearly as subtle. We want to know who we’ll be fighting with.”
“I think that’s wise,” Syrene said. “Elzio, I assume you’ll want to meet with their head of tactics. Perhaps spend the morning learning more about their political situation. I’ll be up at dawn to research more about multi nexi alliances, and then we can convene in the later afternoon to do some preliminary planning.”
“Perfect.” Elzio smiled, beyond pleased with how the day had gone. “If that’s the case…” He trailed off, less pleased now as Syrene rose from Carlin’s bed and moved to her own. “I suppose we’ll need to get an early sleep.” Syrene had barely even scratched the surface of her research, and Elzio desperately wanted to learn what she had discovered.
“In the morning,” she said, reading his disappointment. “I’m not going anywhere.”
But that clock was still ticking in his mind. If they fought Deluuth and things went south, he might very well die before learning everything the world had to offer, and that just wouldn’t do.

Ashlight and Fathina wasted no time in jumping into the details of their planning meeting the moment all parties convened. Their rush confused Elzio at first; with nations unwilling and unprepared to ever actually enter war with each other, there didn’t seem much to lose from taking their time.
Then he noticed the amount of guards around the room. Around Fathina specifically. He noticed how anxious she seemed, the way her hands fidgeted, her eyes darting about, how she jumped at small noises. Was there someone she expected? Was she setting them up?
But she didn’t really look guilty. She looked just afraid, even as the other party members entered, even as she smiled and nodded through all of their introductions. Finally, once Syrene arrived, Fathina rose and smiled.
“I’m going to fetch our heroes’ team lead, who is typically in charge of managing our arenas.” As she turned, a large squadron of guards followed her.
Carlin shifted, a sad look in his eyes as she left. “She must be constantly on edge.”
“I don’t understand why,” Elzio said. “Deluuth isn’t going to attack their capital city.”
“The city? No. Their councilors?” Carlin tucked a knee up on the chair, propping his chin on it. “After what they did in Ythrel, everyone knows Deluuth isn’t playing by the rules. Killing a councilor like that? Genyl’s worried they’ll come for Fathina.”
“Ah.” That made sense. “And she’d be the perfect target. She’s their most valuable asset, and the niece of the nexus. The strategic and emotional blow from her death would be even worse than that of your brother’s.”
An exasperated sigh escaped Syrene’s mouth, something Elzio noticed before he even registered the crestfallen look on Carlin’s face. Elzio wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do here. Assure Carlin that his brother’s death had also been a strategic and emotional blow? Was he not even able to compare the fallouts of various deaths without being expected to strategically watch his every word?
He was spared responding as Fathina returned, this time with a man about a decade Elzio’s senior.
The man nodded briskly at Echo, and then at Elzio and the others. “It’s good to finally meet you,” he said. “My name is Athin. I’ve been a hero in Genyl for over fifteen years and have overseen most of the arena crafting in that time.”
Elzio’s eyes flicked across the man as he pulled up his stats.

Certainly an impressive stats list, though Elzio had to again thank his blessed stars that he had recruited Syrene. Her 27 levels scattered across so many fields more than made up for her lack of battle experience.
Athin joined Fathina and Elzio’s party around a table, on which a holographic image of a nexus arena shone. It put Pyrthet’s similar setup to shame regarding sheer amount of detail, and the arena itself put anything he and Echo had spun up to further shame.
Not that Elzio was complaining. It was fantastic to have a real, full sized holograph to work with.
“To start,” Fathina said, “we must determine the rules regarding multiple nexi fighting alongside each other. Whether points may be pooled or if we will have to work with our own individual points.”
Syrene cleared her throat. “I’ve done some research on that over the past few days. I’m sure you have as well, and I’m sure the nexi in the room have their own takes on the situation, but I do believe that while an arena may host multiple nexi, pooling resources may be impossible.”
Fathina’s lips pressed together grimly. “You’ve read that specifically?”
“Not quite.” Syrene slipped a book out of her bag and flipped it open to a marked page. “What I have noted is that, in the case of Alayex versus the Brithinne brothers, the Brithinnes were unable to help each other.” Her eyes darted over the page as she read aloud. “But alas, upon the knowledge that one brother had specialized to fight and the other defend, Alayex was able to target the weakest of the towers and force down the victory.” She looked up, green eyes somber. “That battle is one of the only cases where multiple nexi coordinated in a single attack, and it is, as far as I’ve seen, the best recorded.”
I had not thought to consider the Brithinne brothers.
Syrene’s eyes widened at the rumbling voice of Ashlight, and Elzio had to remember that even though the woman was learned and leveled, she’d never interacted with a high powered nexus like this.
Their attempt to achieve universal domination was short-lived. That battle ended disastrously for them, both dying at level 10. Barely worth note. But Ashlight sounded far from dismissive. Rather, she sounded intrigued. They exist deep in the recesses of my memory. I will do what I can to bring that knowledge to my awareness.
Next to him, Elzio could feel Echo’s own light pulse with a tremor he couldn’t quite place.
Something on your mind? he asked directly.
I am very curious as to her tactic for unlocking her memory. Echo sounded pensive. But I will ask another time, if at all. We must focus.
It was one of the only times Elzio had heard Echo speak about the future. About improving and learning, not just unlocking her innate nexus intelligence but also finding new tactics. He smiled to himself as he turned back to the battle planning.
They were both going to survive this.
Hey all. Been a bit since I posted this story. A little bird asked why I hadn't finished.
The honest answer is, I finished this a few months ago but wasn't very happy with it. I've given it to my editors for work, but that's taking time. I'd kind of sorta planned on quietly abandoning the serialization and just post when the book was finished.
But in hindsight, that's clearly a bad practice. So I'm going to be posting the rest of this over the next few days. There will be a cleaner and better version coming after it goes through its edits. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of the adventure!

The Final 4 is next week but most of the top prospects have finished their seasons. Overall this season we’ve seen this class somewhat drop off in terms of hype and production. But as per usual, we’ve seen some new faces rise up the boards.
Once again, these are just my thoughts and opinions. Gonna add a grade as well.

1. Victor Wembanyama, F Metro92

Not much else to say. Likely the French league MVP and DPOY, 21/9/2 and 3blk on 47/30/83 splits. I have very high expectations for his rookie season.

1. Scoot Henderson, PG G-League Ignite

Seems that the media and talking heads are starting to turn on Scoot. He’s missed about half the season with a bunch of head injuries. But nonetheless, he is the goods. Nothing changed the fact that he’s elite and projects to be amazing going forward. But the gap between him and Vic has widened by quite a bit.

1. Brandon Miller, F Alabama

Miller has cemented himself in my top 3. His march performance hasn’t really deterred me much, considering he’s been playing through a groin injury. But over the season he’s improved on all his weaknesses, and during the SEC tournament shown a whole new dimension to his game with his passing. He has a legit nba skill with his shooting, and as he gets stronger should be more of a presence around the rim.

1. Amen Thompson, G OTE

I’ve talked myself back into the Thompson twin hype. I think there’s enough translatable skill that he can stick in the league whether the jumper really develops or not. But I trust the work ethic and character as well.

1. Ausar Thompson, G OTE

Him and Amen are essentially the same player to me. The differences are almost negligible. Amen has more hype around his name tho so he’ll get drafted earlier.

1. Jarace Walker, F Houston

Walker stock is charting high right now. His versatility has been great all throughout the season. You can play him in a minimal role and he will excel, you can put the ball in his hands and he’ll be very effective as well. A lot to like. I could see him being a legit star caliber player in the right situation.

1. Nick Smith Jr, G Arkansas

Season went pretty poorly in almost every way. Got injured during training camp. Late debut and only got about 3 games to get in rhythm before going out with injury again. By the time he finally came back, it was the middle of SEC play and he was still battling a lingering knee problem. Regardless, he's shown enough for me to believe he still has all-star upside. His activity off the ball is really good, he moves into space well. His early games he controlled pace really well and always got to his spots with and without the ball. He's also active defensively which is great. I think the lack of production can really be put on his knee injury and his stock will rise during workouts.

1. Cam Whitmore, W/F Villanova

I think Cam has a pretty wide range of outcomes as a player. If a team believes he can be a star, they can put the ball in his hands and he might look similar to Jaylen Brown. If he plays with a really good PG, he can be a great cutter and spot up guy. He has good defensive potential on ball as well as a weakside shot-blocker.

1. Cason Wallace, G Kentucky

About as solid as it gets from a guard prospect. Elite defender with amazing instints. Plays within himself and always seems to be in the right place at the right time. He's shown that he's a good shooter, which was a big swing skill for him. If he can add more creativity to his handle and shot creation, we could see him as high as 4 in a redraft.

1. Anthony Black, G Arkansas

Black has been great for a really poorly constructed Arkansas team. He kept the team going when Brazile and Nick went down. Shown he's capable as a driver and finisher, and I still don't think I've seen him miss a read all season. Excellent passer and a good defender. Will slot nicely as the future PG of a team.

1. Taylor Hendricks, F UCF

The ideal mold for the modern PF. 6'9 with long arms, pretty athletic and a good lob threat and shooter. Also a great shot blocker at the college level. Could be a great starter for a long time.

1. Keyonte George, G Baylor

About as inconsistent of a player as I've seen this year, Keyonte still has a great chance to a starting level scoring guard. But him being 6'3 and just a decent level athlete with his playstyle isn't ideal. He's a tough shot taker without the full shooting ability to be a tough shot maker. He still does other things pretty well. I think he'll find minutes early as a rookie.

1. Gradey Dick, W Kansas

It'll very interesting to see Gradey in Summer League. At Kansas he's been more than a pure shooter, but that was his main role. He finishes with creativity, great of ball mover, and a decent athlete. Looks like he's shaken off the " White Boy Shooter" label.

1. Jordan Hawkins, G UCONN

His team is still making a fun for the National Title as we speak. Jordan Hawkins might be the best off-ball guard prospect I've ever seen. He's got the prettiest shooting stroke, it's very quick and he also gets a lot of lift for a one-motion shot. It's borderline unguardable. He sprints off of screens like there's no tomorrow. He's also very good at attacking closeouts to get to the midrange area. Right now his finishing is average at best, but he's a surprisingly good athlete. I think we might legitimately be looking at another Klay Thompson level shooter. 14 might be way too low for him in hindsight.

1. Brice Sensabaugh, W Ohio State

Brice has one of the best scoring bags in this draft, if not the best. Elite production and efficiency as a freshman. His game resembles a guy like DeRozen, but with a really good 3pt shot. I think his defense isn't as awful as people think. He probably guards 3's in the nba. He's very sturdy and if he puts in more effort he can be at least passable on that end. But his ability to get buckets is really impressive.
Grade: 85

1. Dereck Lively II, C Duke

Box score doesn't look very good, but his end of season for a Duke team that had won I believe 10 games in a row was awesome. He anchored the defense so well as a rim protector and shot blocker. He also does a good job keeping up when he has to guard on the perimeter and recovering at the rim. His offensive game never got put on display this season, as he had a pretty lackluster PG group. But he's a great vertical lob threat, and his jumper looks pretty comfortable and he might be able to stretch it out consistently in the nba. The success of Walker Kessler bodes well for guys like Lively.

1. GG Jackson, F South Carolina

Youngest player in college basketball, he was operating this season off pure talent alone. Because of how bad the team around him was, he ended up having the freedom to do whatever he wanted. He showed a lot of really good shot creating skills, but poor shot selection. I wonder how much he'll get the ball in his hands as a rookie. He can be good without the ball as well, but we just didn't see a whole lot of that.
Grade: 85

1. Max Lewis, W Pepperdine

Max is another guy who slots in as a pretty versatile scoring wing. He started the season off blazing hot, but cooled off as the season went on as expected. His defense was pretty bad, but he has the tools to be very good, so it's more an effort thing than ability. I think he can still be picked in the lottery, preferably to a team with a real identity.

1. Jalen Hood-Schafino, G Indiana

I have mixed feelings about JHS. In HS I thought he looked like a top 3 PG in the country. He has great passing vision and had good delivery as well. In college he's taken on more of a scoring role. He's an average finisher and an okay 3pt shooter, and makes a lot of his money in the midrange. But that's not the most ideal skillset for a lead guard. He's 6'6 so he's got great positional size and it would be fine to play him as a 2 guard.

1. Kobe Buffkin, G Michigan

Former McDonald's All American, he's had a pretty good sophomore campaign. Very productive player. He scores really well on and off ball. Looks pretty solid as a combo guard. One thing I like is that he rebounds pretty well. We could see him as high as 12 on draft night.

I'm curious how he's gonna measure out at the combine. He doesn't look like the 6'8 he's listed as. His shot creating skill looks really nice and so does his jumper. He looks like what I imagined Cam Reddish was going to look like a duke. But he doesn't really guard or rebound. He does to a good job playmaking sometimes.

Pretty much looks like Ousmane Dieng with longer arms. Project wing who can guard and ocasionally make plays. Probably spends most of his time in the G-League.

The French goin crazy this draft cycle lol. Seems pretty similar to Anthony Black IMO. Probably not as skilled as a passer but more athletic. Could end up going a lot higher or lower.

I actually think there's a real chance Dariq stays another year. He's among the youngest players in college, and had a very injury riddled season, so he didn't really get to show us much of anything. If he puts his name in the draft, I think he'll go back to school unless he gets a top 15 promise. I think he's much much better than what we saw at Duke, but I do wonder if at best he's a jack of all trades, master of none.

Strawther has been great for the Zags in his 3 years. He provides great floor spacing and a good off ball scorer. A contender who needs a floor spacer would like him a lot.

Bigger Brandon Clarke? TJD is also a pretty good passer. If he had a legit jumper dude probably flies all the way into the top 10. Also maybe similar to Robert Williams?

Dude is a flamethrower. Definition of a microwave scorer. He's super similar to Bones Hyland in terms of build, skillset, and playstyle. Maybe more athletic tho. Would be higher if he didn't shoot 37% from the field.

Tall dude with real ball skills. Need I say more? He's been GLI's most consistent player. Might be worth a pick higher than a late first.

I'm not sure what to make of Clowney. There's a lot that looks good at the college level, but I'm not sure how he translates to the nba. The way he plays, he should add a good 20lbs to be effective. If he can be a better ball handler and finisher that totally changes his outlook.

The Question: What can be done about Jaune Arc?
Bedeviled by bad luck and unfortunate circumstance, Jaune has been worn down throughout the story of RWBY and driven to a point of utter despair. He has spent years in solitude in the Ever After, outgrowing and distancing himself from his friends and loved ones, and barely has any hope left to "keep moving forward". With RWBY trapped in the Ever After with him, and with their options limited to the harsh rules of this magical world, Jaune may be the only reliable option in escaping this purgatory, saving RWBY from being "ascended", rewritten, or altered from the source of idealism and hope that we know them for.
"Well, Jaune shouldn't be so hard on himself - he is a hero through the eyes of his friends. Not all heroes need to fight, or..."
It's a very reasonable sentiment to express, certainly. But we're talking about the fate of the world, not missing a free-throw. Not being competent, or repeatedly failing, like JNR letting Neo escape with the relic of knowledge - has real consequences in Salem's plot to end the world.
More importantly, his friend's lives are at stake: even though we can argue Jaune isn't to blame, and shouldn't be so ahrd on himself, it will always be an undeniable fact that Jaune is an ineffective fighter, and fights he participated in mattered - and had irrevocable consequences. It may not be fair, but technically the self-criticism is valid:
Had Jaune been replaced by a somewhat competent fighter, things may have been different. And even if it was the slightest, most microscopic 1% change in the odds, I don't think anyone would disagree that Jaune would have taken that deal, just for the slightest chance that it could've saved a friend's life.
"Don't worry, the Ever After is full of magic, there are so many things that could..."
Undo decades of living? Would we really want to "solve" such a drastic problem with such a brute-force measure? Doesn't that reduce the significance of what Jaune has gone through, if it is resolved through a single act without any consequence?
I believe this is contradictory to the entire thematic core of RWBY. In fact, Ruby herself is facing that exact choice - using magic to address her crisis of faith, or staying true to herself and finding her own way.
For Ruby to make the thematically correct decision and succeed, whereas Jaune succumbs to magical temptations - we cannot ignore that thematic contradiction. It would be much too hypocritical.
Beyond contradictions, the unsettling outcome of having Jaune remove years of his life from memory gives us a severe case of "Ship of Theseus". Haven't we just brainwashed Jaune, taken all autonomy from his own self-identification, just because his depression was too difficult for us to deal with? It's a terrible precedent and eerily similar to lobotomizing practices of the early 20th century.
"But Jaune has unsettled business with Cinder!"
Cinder is much more focused on Ruby more than anyone else. Just because Jaune should have a swing at Cinder doesn't mean he will. He's had many chances to prove that he can settle business with Cinder, but in both cases he failed to present Cinder with any sort of meaningful challenge.
Jaune is still an ineffective fighter - in Volume 7 JNR combined weren't able to match Neo - even after a training montage and the moral boost of Volume 6. It's hard to believe that Jaune is entitled to a climactic fight against Cinder when he's never been shown convincingly fighting a human opponent to the extent other characters have.
"But it's such a bad ending, to have Jaune sacrifice his life seems to walk back on everything that happened in Volume 5 and 6..."
It's sad, certainly, but RWBY has done this before with Penny.
In Volume 8, Penny was ready to sacrifice herself, and though she was convinced by Ruby to value her life - even after becoming a human, Penny walked back on her desires and chose the selfless, heroic sacrifice. A similar parallel could be drawn by Pyrrha or Summer.
This isn't Jaune acting with reckless abandon in V5, but a noble choice in the face of a terrible quagmire that has RWBY trapped in the Ever After. We can complain about it being a regression of character, but sometimes characters regress, sometimes sad things happen.
"But wouldn't that make Pyrrha's death a waste?"
Not really, as a writer, I find it more compelling to have Jaune's story end in such a bittersweet and tragic way, even if that also makes Pyrrha's death even more depressing.
Besides, you could argue Pyrrha's death was already wasted on Jaune. For Volumes Jaune has struggled and failed to live up to Pyrrha's shadow, and JNR is often the team that drops the ball - giving Neo the relic of creation, letting Oscar get kidnapped, etc...
This outcome actually does make Pyrrha's death work - because finally the world hinges on a decision Jaune makes for himself, based on all of the struggles that have made him who he is, stemming the death of Pyrrha, to save RWBY? Saving the protagonists of the show, who will go on to stop Salem?
I would call that a meaningful act.
Consider the alternative: if Jaune survives the events of Volume 9, how could he redeem or make Pyrrha's death meaningful? Considering how disillusioned and negative his character is, how can we expect him to succeed in the story? He is practically Ironwood or Qrow at this point, and we have no time to waste on trying to fix his mental headspace.
So with these limitations in mind: what outcome do we expect? How do we expect it to be happy? How believable would it be?
RT's options are limited by putting Jaune through so much and taking away so much of his spirit.
In Conclusion:

• Noble Sacrifices are recognized in RWBY.
  • Pyrrha, Penny and Summer are all tragic deaths, but their decisions have always been affirmed: treated as good endings to their characters, as they held true to their beliefs and allowing them to achieve their goals in life.
• Jaune has been taught the value of sacrifice and self-determination
  • He respected Penny's will. In Volume 6, speaking to the RHW, he came to terms as to why Pyrrha made such a fateful choice. He knows the importance of a life, but also the beliefs that drive people to willingly give up their lives for a greater cause.
• Jaune sees the greater cause in RWBY
  • Us as fans know RWBY to be the main characters, but Jaune himself sees RWBY to be the people with the spirit and potential to defeat Salem. He knows that the best chance for Remnant is to have team RWBY back, and that through this sacrifice, he will be able to emulate Penny and Pyrrha and, for once, be the hero. Not through fighting, but through sacrifice.
• Thus, Jaune sacrificing himself is probably the best outcome for his character
  • There simply isn't enough time to walk him back to Argus and give him another pep talk. Jaune's depression and misery are virtually unfixable, given how little screentime we have to try and address his problems. On top of that, there is the physical reality that Jaune has spent about half of his life in an alternate reality, struggling with this guilt and becoming distant from his friends. Having a mid-40s Jaune stuck with Ren and Nora is always going to demonstrate the years they have lost.
  • Because of this, it's hard to see a good end for Jaune's character moving forward. How can the writers effectively solve these problems? I'm concerned that no convincing solution exists.
  • Save one.
  • The ultimate expression of hope, and most thematically powerful act in RWBY - achieving victory through death. Committing one's entire life based on their beliefs, dreams and goals is a heroic endeavour and considered a victory in RWBY - it is antithetical to Salem's hatred and ignorance about the value of death. It is probably the most effective - and believable - way Jaune can achieve his dream of being a hero - helping his friends, and making peace with all of the struggle and failure he has endured throughout the show.

Epilogue...
Yeah, ok, I don't like it either, ok? If Jaune ends up heroically dying in the Ever After, no matter how heroic or cool or fulfilling it is, it's going to break Ren and Nora's hearts. I really don't want it to happen.
But to me, it's the only believable way I can see Jaune finding peace and triumphing over his despair. With what has happened and how it is presented - RT has pushed Jaune past the point of no return.
This post is a challenge against the wishful thinking that I've seen in the fandom in reaction to Jaune's current state. The excuses people use to try and argue why Jaune shouldn't sacrifice himself aren't substantial. They don't provide any convincing alternative to Jaune's anguish - they just express how unhappy this outcome appears. But as I said above, just because Jaune's depression is so advanced and total, doesn't allow us to try and spirit it away with wishful thinking.

Hi everyone,

Gf has a 2012 Honda Fit. I forget the trim level but she has AM/FM/CD with aux port, power windows and door locks, but only one arm rest.

The dome light has been out for a bit, despite buying new bulbs. So today we decided to team up and fix it and boy howdy has it gone wrong. Here's the order of operations and the resulting problems. Any advice is appreciated.

Before we began, everything in the car works fine except for the dome light.

1. Tested a different bulb. Light doesn't work regardless of switch/door position.
2. Check the fuses. Fuses look fine. After removing the #14 Key/locks 7.5a fuse and putting it back, the stereo won't turn on.
3. Take stereo fuse out. Looks good. Put back in. Stereo works.
4. Dome light still doesn't work so I get a multimeter.
5. We spend 40 min looking up how to set the multimeter (it was a gift to me and I never use it) and finally test the contacts for the dome light: no volts at all. Seems odd.
6. Test multimeter on the car batter terminals. It reads zero. Seems like the leads or reader are bad (fun!) so we just wasted 45 min.
7. Turn car on and stereo doesn't turn on, electronic door locks don't work. Gf aims that patient-but-confused-hiding-worry-but-also-understanding look at me. We changed nothing in regards to the stereo fuses between when it worked and didn't.
8. Take stereo fuse out again and it looks a bit charred now. Swap in new 7.5. Stereo doesn't work.
9. Fuses 61 (30) and 14 (7.5) are fine

I saw one forum post that said to check fuse #1 (a large relay type fuse) that is 7.5a and also controls the map light, stereo, and gauge cluster, but our gauges are fine.
And that's where we're at. I've ordered new multimeter leads but does anyone know why tf the stereo would stop working despite all fuses for it looking fine? Is the next step a new relay?

There are a lot of these stories in this subreddit, but I thought I'd go ahead and submit mine in case it resonates with someone.

First of all, let me say that I have many friends and family who are still members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Many of them are smarter, more knowledgeable, and more Christlike than I’ll ever be. I deeply respect these people. The fact that I’ve made a different choice than them means that I disagree with them on some fundamental issues. Any explanation as to why I made my choice may come across as antagonistic to those who have made a different choice. But I continue to love and respect my friends and family who remain faithful to Mormon doctrine.
I believe there are two main hooks that can keep someone in a church. First, you believe its truth claims, and second, you believe in the effect it has on your life and the world (e.g. it is an expression of your values, you believe it is a force for good, it makes you a better person, it gives you peace, etc.) One of these hooks had to hold for me to remain in the Mormon church. If I believed in the truth claims, that the Mormon church is truly God’s kingdom on earth, that it is the only “true” church, that it is the only path to happiness and eternal salvation, then it wouldn’t matter if it conflicted with my personal values or opinions — I would need to get with the program. And if I loved the effect it had on my life and my family, and I believed the Mormon church was the best place for us to develop into healthy, happy people while also doing good in the world, then I could live with having a shared mythology about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon that wasn’t based in fact. When neither of those hooks held, the only rational choice was for me to leave the church.
I won’t go into detail about the problems with specific Mormon truth claims as there are many other sites that do that thoroughly (see LDS Discussions and Letter for My Wife). When I was a member, I didn’t allow myself to read sites like those. I was taught to only study “faith-promoting” sources (i.e. church propaganda). I was taught that if I read “anti-Mormon” literature, I would lose “the Spirit” and be subject to the influence of Satan, which would lead me away from the church. And I liked my life in the church. I didn’t really know what life outside the church was like, but I loved what I had and didn’t want to mess with it. So I would brush aside all sorts of highly problematic issues (e.g. anachronisms in the Book of Mormon, the weirdness of the temple endowment and garments, Joseph Smith coercing teenagers and married women to have sex with him, etc.)
But as more of these issues started to bubble up, and as I started to notice areas where the church’s teachings didn’t align with my values (as discussed below), I reached a point where I decided that I was not going to be afraid of information. I would seek out facts and truth without a predetermined conclusion in mind. That meant that if I learned the church was wrong, I would leave. That’s important, because I don’t believe anyone can look at the church objectively unless they’re willing to walk away from it.
I read the CES letter. I read rebuttals of the CES letter. I listened to Mormon Stories. I read church apologetics on FAIR Latter-Day Saints. I read history books like Early Mormonism and the Magic World View and The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power. I read Under the Banner of Heaven. Once I allowed myself to objectively weigh the evidence (including my own experiences), the pieces fit into place very quickly. All my questions, concerns and uncertainties about the church became astonishingly clear. There were mountains of evidence that the Mormon church’s truth claims were simply not true. I could no longer say that I believed “the church is true” and consider myself an honest person.
But again, I could stay in the church as a non-believer (or at least as someone that didn’t believe everything literally) if the church was consistent with my values. In many ways it is, but there are some important ways in which it is not. Below are some things I value, some things I don’t care about, and some things I want for my daughters. This is not an exhaustive list, but I’m hoping it’s enough to illustrate why I can no longer remain in the church.
Some things I value:

• I value honesty. I don’t believe in “lying for the Lord”. I don’t believe in hiding, misconstruing or glossing over important facts for the sake of faith promotion. I believe in seeking out and disclosing truth, and then letting adults decide what to do with that truth. Despite its emphasis on the importance of truth, the Mormon church is the most secretive and dishonest organization I’ve ever been a part of.
• I value freedom of thought. When people feel like they have to believe what their leaders tell them, and dissent is not tolerated, bad things happen.
• I value repentance, both on an individual level and an organizational level. I believe people and organizations should examine mistakes they’ve made and then seek to correct them. For all its preaching about repentance, the church has never apologized for its own mistakes.
• I value progression. The world has a lot of evil in it, but I believe society has made some important progressive steps in the last century. Racism and sexism aren’t eradicated but they are acknowledged and addressed. Minorities have a better chance of being treated like human beings. Mental health issues are losing their stigma and people suffering from them are getting help. In many ways, the world is a kinder, more just place than it was a century ago. Despite its claims to prophetic vision, the Mormon church has not been at the forefront of any of these progressions and in fact has actively impeded them. The church appears to be frozen in 19th century values, and only extreme external pressure will cause the church to reluctantly change.
• I value women’s rights. I don’t believe that women are inferior to men. I don’t believe that men are entitled to have authority over women. Mormon leaders pay lip service to the importance of women, often in very patronizing ways, but the fact remains that not a single woman in the church has authority over a single man. Until that changes, women will never be equal to men in the Mormon church. I won’t even get into the horrors of polygamy.

Some things I don’t care about:

• I don’t care about doing quasi-Masonic rituals. I don’t care about secret handshakes or ceremonial underwear. Holy buildings and rituals can have a valid place in religion, but it’s befuddling how much Mormons obsess over them. In my last year in the church, 4 of the 5 goals for our ward were related to doing these rituals. I just don’t care about them. I find them weird, cultish, manipulative and sexist, and I don’t need them in order to be Christian.
• I don’t care about priesthood keys. The church places a lot of emphasis on who has authority from God and who doesn’t. But the priesthood was an evolving concept in the early years of the church. The story of John the Baptist and Peter, James and John appearing to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery is a retrofitted tale intended to bolster their power over church members. It was never mentioned until years after it supposedly happened. When a revelation received in 1830 was transferred from the Book of Commandments to the Doctrine and Covenants, a reference to the priesthood restoration was added without any acknowledgment that it wasn’t included in the original revelation. Evidence suggests that the story was made up. But in any event, I don’t care what authority men claim to have from God. I care about people following their own consciences while being open to good ideas wherever they come from.
• I don’t care about tests of loyalty to something that conflicts with my values. • I want my daughters to be curious and intellectually honest. I want them to hold to their values but challenge their beliefs. I don’t want them to be afraid of information. If they discover new evidence, I want them to be willing to change their positions. I want them to value truth over convenience, habit, or hubris.
• I want my daughters to question and challenge authority. I want them to seek out ways to make the world better and not cling to traditions of the past.
• I want my daughters to feel comfortable talking to me about anything without fear that I will disapprove of their opinions or positions. If we disagree, I want us to be able to have a constructive conversation. I want to be able to learn from my daughters. I want my daughters to be wiser than me.
• I don’t want my daughters to feel like they are responsible for the sexual thoughts or behaviors of men.
• I want my daughters to feel a powerful sense of self worth. I don’t want their options limited because they are female. I want them to reach their potential in whatever field they choose. I want them to find happiness and satisfaction, whatever that means for them.

Some say that none of this matters if you have a witness of the church’s divinity through the Holy Ghost. Essentially that means that personal feelings should trump all arguments, evidence, rational thought and moral principles. But spiritual feelings aren’t unique to the Mormon church. Nor are Mormons the only ones who tell members to ignore all outside information and instead ask God for direction — that is a common tactic used by high demand religions. I believe it is important to seek out a connection with God, and I believe that God has guided me at pivotal moments in my life, but I don’t believe that spiritual feelings are the ultimate source of truth. And I hope this isn’t insulting, but I don’t personally know anyone who believes in the Mormon church after fully investigating it without a predetermined conclusion in mind. People in the church want to believe in it, so they find a way to get there even in the face of contradictory evidence. In my experience, people who join the church as converts don’t know the whole story. If there is anyone out there that knew about the complete history of the Mormon church, warts and all, and then decided to be baptized, I would love to talk to that person.
I’m grateful for some of the positive things the church has instilled in me. I believe it has made me a hopeful person that wants to do the right thing. But I’ve reached a point in my life where the church is no longer right for me. If any of my friends or family reading this wants to discuss issues with the church, challenge me, or give me arguments or evidence I might have missed, I’d be more than happy to have an open two-way discussion. Until then, know that I love you and hope that our mutual respect for each other can continue.
