2023.06.09 23:03 Stupid56 I may be old but I'm not stupid

So I'm definitely a boomer and could have retired several years ago and collected SSI had I chosen to do so. I continue to work, and do all the other stuff any functioning member of society does like paying my bills and grocery shopping.
On the subject of shopping: today I went to my local Walmart to buy groceries, which today included a 12 pack of beer and a bottle of wine. I went through the self checkout and when the alcohol went through, a youngish (millenial or possibly a little younger) female employee came to the register and asked to see my driver's license. This is standard practice and is in fact required by state law.
That was fine. THIS is what pissed me off sufficiently to cause me to walk away without paying, after telling the aforementioned employee I changed my mind and she could put the groceries back where they belonged. After inspecting my license, she looked me in the eye and said "now, don't forget you need to renew your license this year".
Bitch, I know. I need to renew it in my birth month, which is November. I did not say exactly that to her. What I did do is ask her if she worked for the DMV and why she thought she needed to say what she said. I told her I have a full time job, pay my bills, and am well aware of when things are due including my license renewal. Then I said "I changed my mind and I don't want any of this. Now you can put it away". Overreaction? I don't think so. I also talked to a manager about the incident. Why is it that so many young people seem to think that it's ok to treat people age 60+ as if we are all simple minded and/or suffering from dementia? I don't automatically assume every millenial or younger person I meet is clueless. Why do so many of them treat us as if we are imbeciles? I'm sick of it.

2023.06.09 22:53 No_Cow4456 Bad address

I live near this motel that has been changed to DSS housing for families. I had like 3 pickups there that were all grocery store or back and each time I make the stop they take more than 5 minutes. So I usually leave them but the pay and time sucks. I’m not gonna ask if anyone would keep taking rides from there because I know the answer. I just want some similar stores form addresses people won’t pick up from and the reason…. Besides medical rides 😂

Would you accept this?
Just curious if y’all would consider this an order worth doing or not? It doesn’t equal $2 per mile which is usually my requirement but it was still a good chunk of money for my goal for the day. It was a Walmart grocery order with two bags, some totes, and one medium sized item (which doesn’t matter bc you don’t know that until after you accept and pickup the order, it said 5-10 bags).

2023.06.09 22:21 Green-Papaya-9908 Only child and can't help financially, guilt.

Not sure what to do at this point. I'm an only child and my Mother(75)has diabetes she also lives on Social Security in a HUD low income senior apartment. She's always running out of money weeks before her next SS payment and then she cries and I feel guilty, but I can't give her anymore money without it affecting my family now and we have children to care for. I'm at a loss. The government took away food stamps and shes signed up for everything else I can think of, she cancelled meals on wheels because she hates the food 🙄 Rent went up $100 due to inflation. Dr bills, prescription bills are nuts even with insurance in the US..I dk what else I can do. I've tried helping her budget and setting her up for grocery delivery. I'm really stressed and have a lot going on in my personal life also. I'm learning what not to do as I age because this really is ridiculous. It seems unless you're rich and planned well or have a spouse or family that's rich you're fked.

2023.06.09 22:01 _TCTK_ Better Combo??? Platinum + Gold versus CSP + CFU + Platinum + Everyday Preferred

TL;DR: Is the AmEx Platinum + Gold combo ($945 AF) or CSP + CFU + Platinum + Everyday Preferred ($885 AF) a better combo? If I swapped the Marriot Bonvoy Bold ($0 AF, but 2x on everything else) with the CFU, is it just simply a question of whether wanting to limit yourself to one hotel vs using the cashback for UR? Is there anything I'm not considering or even just overthinking this whole thing? I usually save up points to use on NYC hotels or international travel with my fiancé...we live in NYC! Am looking for a "grocery" and "everything else" card/s and think either adding the Gold or adding the CFU / Everyday Preferred is the better choices.
Current Cards:
Monthly Spend Categories:
If I am doing the math right...the Platinum + Gold combo would get me 8000~ points a month, but limits me to just using the AmEx ecosystem. The 4 card combo would give me 5535~ points (2235 Chase / 3300 AmEx), $12~ back, and cost $5 less a month in AF's, while also giving me the Chase + AmEx ecosystems (9 of the airlines overlap and the Marriot Hotel overlap).
Question 1: Is $60 savings in AF's + $144 cashback a year worth a 29,580~ points a year difference, even if limited to one ecosystem?
If I swapped the CFU with the Marriot Bonvoy Bold ($0 AF...and the Chase / AmEx ecosystems overlap with Marriot) this would give me 2x points on the "everything else" category, effectively giving me 1600 points a month to use on Marriot hotels.
Question 2: Is 19200~ Marriot points + 66420 UR / MR points worth a difference of 29580 MR points?
I can get a 90k SUB with the AmEx Gold and a 50k sub with the Marriot Bonvoy Bold, if that may change anything as well. Am I overthinking this whole thing or actually on to something? Anything I haven't considered or need to ask myself before going one way or another?

2023.06.09 21:53 Citrusface A Gaslands Refueled getting started budget guide.

This is a budget guide to getting started with Gaslands Refueled. I wanted to compile a comprehensive list of how to get started playing Gasland for as little money as possible. This guide assumes you have no experience with miniature gaming and model / terrain building.
Step 1: Buy the Book. Get some dice. Get some templates.
This is arguably the most expensive part, but, buying the book is non-negotiable. You need it. Buy it physical or digital - but buy it. I would also highly suggest buying Gasland dice and acrylic templates. It makes things go a lot smoother.
Step 2: Take a walk.
Grab a plastic container and a grocery bag and go outside and take a walk. On your walk you are going to look for a few things that will aid you in building Gasland's terrain and cars.
We will get in to how to build terrain later, for now, just collect some stuff.
Step 3: Take a trip to the Dollar Tree (Or Poundland, or Dollarama, or whatever)
The dollar store is the best way to get most everything you need to play. Gaslands is one of the most accessible miniature games out there since it is so approachable from a monetary standpoint. The items below are pretty much everything you need to build a board and cars.
Keep in mind, your store may not carry some of this stuff, or some of this stuff may just be out of production by the time you find and read this. But no worries, you'll find something similar to stand in its place. Get as much or as little as you can afford - If its your first time doing something like this, don't overwhelm yourself, just get a few cars and a weapon pack and some super glue. I would also pick up the cubes and buildings if they have it, just for some ready-made terrain. I would avoid paint from the dollar store unless you know it's a good brand.
4: Go to Walmart / Lowes / Home Depot / Micheals / Amazon / FLGS Walmart is probably the best bet to have all this in one shot, plus you can get some of the things here that you can get at the dollar store. These things are going to be a bit more expensive than a dollar, but they are going to make your gaming experience that much better.
This the stuff you will absolutely need to modify all the other stuff you purchased at the dollar tree.
5: Watch Youtube
There are so, so, so, many people out there making things for cheap. I don't really know how to write a tutorial on how to build and make everything you need for miniature games, but YouTube is you best play to find guide for quick and easy miniature stuff. Here are some channels I would recommend:
So, there is a good start point for things to buy and watch, here are some quick start tricks and tips for you to consider.
Okay! That is all I have - but I would ask for the community to weigh in on this as well - let me know what suggestions, tips, things you can buy cheap, YouTube channels, whatever you think is helpful - I will add them to the post and credit you. I wanted to make this before Reddit implodes so new players have an easy way to get started when they search on the Google.

2023.06.09 21:03 ConsequencesFree Tear holes in my EV car rental service business plan

I have been paying $490 per week for a standard but really nice SUV with enterprise for the last 6 weeks and will have to do so for another 6 weeks. I noticed enterprise is usually all booked so it got me wondering, why not fill the gap? DMV area, mostly (near or around DC area though so Baltimore County to Northern VA near Dulles).
So here’s the plan
Start off with 1 EV, Tesla model 3 Long Range with no full self driving ($50,380, $7500 tax incentive + $3000 state incentive). Then slowly scale up to Rivan R1S SUV ($80-90k) and the Cybertruk.
$80 daily rate (Monday - Thursday)
$150 daily rate (Friday - Sunday)
Loyalty program
-$100 p/m or rent for 10 weeks or longer per year to qualify
-$60 p/d rate
Optional add-ons
Customer acquisition
$630 weekly rate ($90 p/day) if booked 24 hours in advance, $700 for instant booking
Rideshare option - renter can use for Uber or Lyft
Food delivery option - renter can use for Dominos or Doordash or Uber Eats, etc
US business mileage tax deduction- $0.65.
Assuming mostly rideshare drivers use me and the car is driven at least 100 miles per day, 36,500 miles * $0.65 = $23,725 back in taxes
Assuming I rent daily at my lowest price of $80, that’s $29,200 gross per vehicle.
$29,200 * 0.60 (40% tax) = $17,520 gross
$50,380 - $10,000 down payment = $40,380
$40,380 @ 10% interest, 48 months = $1,024.14 monthly
I want to pay the car off in 24 months
After 12 months, my balance will be $31,739.40
$31,739.40 - $7500 federal EV credit - $3,000 state EV credit = $21,739.40
I’m not sure how to calculate the mileage deduction so I’ll leave that out as extra income. I used to do Uber and Lyft and $200-300 after Uber fees working a day are realistic. I have also done Dominos which pays out $13 p/hr and has unlimited overtime if you are willing to close, you can seriously do 70 hours OT (10am to 2am) but your only driving half or 1/3 of the time, plus $350 tips, so your looking at $1000+ per week working 10-12 hrs daily, $1700 if your willing to slave away. The difference in electric vs gas is pretty significant. That cost savings could result in 50% savings. For example I was spending $50 daily to fill up with Uber (250-400 miles) and about $25 with dominos (120 miles).
I’m also calling up local repair shops and dealerships and businesses to offer my cars as loaners. Repair shops and dealers seem resistant though, they hate EVs. Dealerships in my area charge $50 per day for rentals while cars are being serviced. Not sure about how to contact insurance companies though.
So what do you guys think? Target market are gig workers who are all in for the most part, with some sprinkling of one off customers whether from partnering businesses or google ads, etc.

2023.06.09 20:17 Its-ah-me DAE hate the grocery store?

The grocery store gives me so much anxiety. I hate the crowds, decisions, the possibility that my usual brand/product is out of stock, the parking lot, etc. It's like all of my least favorite things in one place, and I have to keep going regularly or I don't get to eat.
I often take a long time to decide on an item if it's new or if they're out of my usual. I consider the ingredients and the price of everything. It feels like people come up and stand behind me impatiently every time, even though I try to be overly conscious of leaving room to pass and pulling my cart out of the way. Half the time I just panic and walk away without choosing anything.
I know many grocery stores now have delivery and/or pickup options, but I hate using those bc they're horrible at picking out produce, and they will substitute for items that are out of stock which usually just doesn't work for someone as particular as me, so I end up having to go in anyway.
DAE feel this strongly about the grocery store, or is it just me?

Welcome back, folks, to another fun-filled episode of: Reddit Comment or Short Scary Story?

Let’s dive in, shall we?
Tonight, we have some words shared by u/alison_bee. *So sit back, enjoy the ride, forget the world is burning around you, and have some fun for once!
Oh and don’t forget to submit your vote for Fact or Fiction after reading!
From u/alison_bee -
Prices on everything are just going up, up, up, up, up, up, up.
Meanwhile, my income? Stagnant as fuck.
Prices going up while serving sizes go down.
New bullshit fees pop up, existing fees going up, frequency of coupons and “deals” go down.
Subscription costs go up, but ability to watch is whittled down.
We work 2-3 jobs, while companies have record-profit quarters… EVERY QUARTER.
CEOs give themselves bonuses annually. We haven’t had an increase in MINIMUM WAGE in… 14 years?????
We clock 60-80 hours a week. Boss owns 6-8 cars.
They fight to end student loan forgiveness, and have the audacity to add additional fees AND back pay?? They also took billions in PPP loans, and didn’t pay a fucking cent back.
Eventually we will all run out of everything we have left to give.
What will they take then?
——————————————————
You come home at 7pm after a 12 hour shift. Too tired to cook, not that you had any decent groceries on hand, anyway. Your stomach growls. Fine, you’ll order out. Ugh. Can’t believe you are about to pay $12 for a burger combo that should be $7, max.
But you’re not done.
$5.99 delivery fee. $6.99 “associated fees”. $1.00 covid recovery surcharge.
”And don’t you fucking DARE try to tip less than 25% you penniless, destitute fuck. You shouldn’t have fucking ordered delivery IF YOU CANT AFFORD IT. Oh and you’ll be happy to hear that 100% of your tip goes to the driver - after all, SOMEONE has to pay them!
Total after tax, fee, and tip: $45? $50? $55?
For what will inevitably be a cold burger that wasn’t made to how you ordered, cold stale fries, and the wrong soda.
AND they forgot your ranch. That you, of course, paid extra for.
You want to be mad, but you’re not. You can’t blame the order fuck up, because the restaurant is probably way understaffed, and being run by literal 13 year olds. You can’t blame the food temp on the driver, the delivery took 75 minutes because he had to make 8 deliveries before yours (after all, you decided against the $2.99 “Straight to me!” up charge). Besides, the driver was some tired looking dude in his… what, mid 60s? Poor dude.
How can you be mad at that? All of those people physically involved in making/getting you that food feel the same fucking way you do, and probably make less money, too.
Fuck.
Your stomach growls again. You ignore it and go to bed.
After all, you’ve got work in the morning!

2023.06.09 19:30 Panic-Panic-Panic (US) Spending more than what we are making – what's the best route to stop drowning?

Between poor decisions, hours cut due to the pandemic, and just being down on our luck, my family and I have found ourselves absolutely drowning in debt and bills. On paper, we make a lot of money, but we are spending way more than we are bringing in. After taxes, health insurance, FSA, etc. we bring home a little over $7,100 monthly. Last month, we spent over $9,100. Holy shit.
Here is a breakdown of our May finances:
Daycare $2,235
Rent $2,056
Debt $1,800
Car $1,500
Groceries $560
Utilities $341
Food $290
Entertainment $160
Daycare – We just put a deposit down at a daycare that is $1,450/mo and will switch in August. The current tuition is about $450/wk, and it's over 35 minutes away one way (near my husband's old job). When we were planning for our kid, MIL committed to two days a week, my husband was off one day during the week, so we initially only needed care 2 days a week. This was discussed many times throughout the pregnancy. Since I've given birth, she's only visited maybe once a month, never to really help out – just to see the baby. We started off with a part-time nanny that didn't work out. I tried working remotely while caring for our baby, but I felt I was neglecting both him and my job equally. Daycares in our area have a 2+ year waitlist and usually require a deposit of at least $3,000. Also, daycare was on my credit card which as of now has been maxed out and over the limit.
Car – We used to be a one-car family ($560/mo in car payments), but right before I gave birth my husband was absolutely panicking about me not having a car for emergencies with the baby while he was at work. He worked in sales and was consistently in the top 2 salesmen, so at the time it was feasible to get a second car, albeit not the one he chose. He ended up leasing one (trust me, this was a very sore subject in our relationship for a while) and now trading it in would land us in so much negative equity. I got in an accident a couple weeks ago (not at fault), so now the value on the other financed vehicle dropped. This bucket also includes replenishment for tolls which I've now removed from autopay.
Debt – Yep. It's a big one. We lived in a state with a slightly lower cost of living, and my husband's employment was severely affected by the pandemic. We accumulated a lot of debt. Some of this is furniture that has no interest, but a large chunk is credit card / personal loan debt meant to keep us afloat. The personal loan initially was to consolidate student loans and a much smaller credit card debt.
Groceries – This includes baby and pet supplies. We only shop at cheaper grocery stores like Aldi.
Food – We absolutely need to get better at just cooking. We just feel like we're hardly surviving with the sleepless nights and long workdays.
Entertainment – Normally this is only $24 for streaming services, but we did celebrate my first Mother's Day.
Like I said, I do acknowledge that a lot of this is consequences of poor decision making. In January, we had a pretty solid snowball debt payoff plan, we deleted our food delivery apps, and we really tried to cut down on spending. We don't go out and try our best to keep our spending to a minimum. Unfortunately, the economy hit car sales pretty hard and while my husband was consistently a top performer across multiple dealerships it was still not enough. He finally got a job with much better hours and consistent pay. But in the last two weeks alone, we've had to pay for bed bug treatments, emergency vet bills, and the insurance deductible from the accident (not at fault and the other party has insurance, but they went through mine first then are pursuing his? Idk it's all been a headache). And yeah, as you can guess, the credit card became the emergency fund.
So – what's the next step here? Another personal loan? Credit card balance transfer (no idea how that works)? We're trying to sell as much as we can but that's just a temporary fix.

2023.06.09 19:29 FourSpeedPizzaCuck The Milk Man

Hey folks, I made a new Reddit username after discovering this subreddit because I think I'll be posting here a lot. And I don't want to use my main account because if ANY of my coworkers or friends see this particular story, they will immediately know it's me. This is because I told everybody.
This is the story of The Milk Man.
I deliver food for a small Italian market. In addition to pizza, we generally get delivery requests for subs, wings, drinks, etc. However, it is an actual market in the front, so some people will order what you might consider "groceries". Produce, baked goods, and (important to our story) milk.
A few weeks ago, an order came in for a medium sausage and pepperoni pizza. Along with this, the customer wanted a half gallon of whole milk. (I later found out he told the person taking his order "PLEASE do not forget my milk.") Weird, right? Who drinks milk with pizza? But I have a 3 year old kid, and I reasoned that if I were ordering pizza I might throw in the milk just to save a trip if I were running low. Wrong.
I took the delivery, and the man answered the door. Late twenties or early thirties, looked like he might have just woken up. It was a hot day, so he was only wearing basketball shorts. Pretty normal so far, "Hey, how we doing? Just need you to sign right here for me if you could" blah blah blah. It is only while he is signing the receipt that I see it.
On his left pec.
Right above his heart.
In fancy script.
About 1.5" tall.
Is a tattoo of the word "Milk"
Again, this man is only wearing basketball shorts, and this is his only visible tattoo.
I was so bewildered that I took the signed receipt and my pen, thanked him, wished him a good day, and went back to my car. And then, as I backed out and pulled onto the road, I started to laugh so hard I stopped making noise.
When I got back to the store, tears were running down my face as I approached and told everybody who would listen.
I do not mean to pick on the man, and I hope it doesn't come across that I think poorly of him. He is my hero. He either just LOVES milk, or he thought of the funniest thing a person could possibly do: get one single prominently placed tattoo of the word "Milk" and use any opportunity to express your love of milk to strangers.
Wherever you are, Milk Man, I hope you are doing well.
Thanks for reading.

2023.06.09 19:05 Kirbypopstarpoyo Discrepancy in preferred points statement

Discrepancy in preferred points statement
Anyone else’s sapphire preferred say 1 point per dollar spent for restaurants on the statement??
I discovered today an odd discrepancy I was hoping anyone could shed light on. As we know, the sapphire preferred (and reserve) gets 3x points on dining purchases. For some reason when I checked my statement, my preferred card says 1 point per dollar on restaurants, not 3… Then my travel says 2x points. I would think it would say 3x points or 3 points per dollar for restaurant but it says neither. It isn’t because I haven’t earned points in the restaurant category for that statement as far as I can tell because my husband doesn’t have this problem on his reserve.
On a separate note, I am also curious for those with the reserve: My husband’s reserve card sticks with the language of # points per dollar earned rather than 3x points if that makes sense, but it is consistent (regardless if he actually makes purchases in that area for that statement). Whereas mine says 2x travel points (not 2 points per dollar) and then 1 point per dollar for all other purchases and 1 point per dollar for dining…

I feel so bad I just ordered groceries for the first time on the Walmart app. And because I use EBT it doesn’t let me add a tip. Anyway to bypass this? It’s ridiculous I work gig jobs as well I’m dying inside knowing there is no tip on my order… any suggestions?

2023.06.09 18:17 kegweII Curbside Pickup - Tipping?

What’s the general consensus on tipping for curbside pickup. For example, curbside grocery pickup. Is there an expectation to tip the person who loads the groceries into your car? I know some business don’t allow tipping. Tipping culture is getting way out of hand, but feels like somebody who took the time to safely load groceries and deal with the weather should be tipped? I used to tip $5, but always got a weird look or maybe surprise. Either way the reactions started to seem awkward so I stopped. Thoughts?
