I was busted by the light police. They had a point, Dana Milbank of the Washington Post.
Dana Milbank purchased a home in, soon to be not, rural Virginia. At night he kept the formerly vacant property lit to the degree that spurned one commentator to call it “spaceship lighting.”
Milbank recaps being visited by the “light police,” a group of concerned citizens who help educate neighbors and instill a sense of pride in the brilliance of their starry night skies.
At first, he was taken aback, but later, not only did he appreciate their efforts, but he also converted his blinding always on, white light flood lights to warm 2700 Kelvin motion sensing lights.
Per Ruskin Hartley, executive director of the International Dark Sky Association, “for 4.5 billion years there was no artificial light at night. It’s really only in the last five human generations that we transformed that. It’s one of the most profound transformations of our environment.”
Many of you may recall an earlier story, way back in our Hormone of Darkness episode, showcasing concerns by local residents prior to a 760 house (now 761) plus town center development moving into the Culpepper County, VA area. Per the Rappahannock News, this development features “a resort style swimming pool, clubhouse, tot lot, and multiple sports fields and sports courts, all connected by a network of biking and walking trails.”
The forgotten medieval habit of ‘two sleeps’ by Zaria Gorvett of the BBC.
Gorvett opened my eyes to something I never knew about, the medieval custom of two sleeps. For those of you unaware, two sleeps are exactly what it sounds like.
Folks would partake in a communal nap, complete with rigid sleeping arrangement conventions, between 9 – 11pm, then awaken for a few hours to do everything from hang out to brew beer! In fact, the idea of multiple sleeps crossed cultures and was found in places as far from Europe as indigenous South America.
How can one’s circadian rhythm make sense of all of this?!
Well, for starters, until the invention of the alarm clock, which humorously was invented by a clocks salesman so he could wake up and sell more clocks, people had no firm way to wake up at a consistent time. The industrial revolution enforced a new circadian standard.
And there’s some science behind this! In the 1992 study, In Short Photoperiods, human sleep is biphasic, researcher Thomas Wehr found that after four weeks of 10 hour days, his subjects began to engage in this two sleep cycle, involving a one to three hour period for which they became awake and engaged in between.
Want to Learn About Light Pollution? There’s a mini-course for that!, Jennifer Sensiba of Clean Technica.
Quoting Sensiba, “As I got older, I traveled a lot more and saw the problem more for what it is. Not only did I see that in many places there is no refuge from it, but I also saw that it was slowly growing worse. Places that had been dark 30 years ago had more and more light creeping upon the horizon.”
If you’re interested in learning more, or more importantly, know someone who might benefit from learning more, Sensiba links up to an International Dark Sky Mini-Course on light pollution, call it Light Pollution 101!
There’s a Play Date at the National Museum of Natural History: Lights Out exhibit!
But unfortunately, by the time you listen to this, and hell, by the time we talk about this, it has passed.
Ann Arbor named best place for sunrises, sunsets in Michigan. Sarah Parlette for Click on Detroit.
Evidently gambling websites have decided to honor April’s International Dark Sky week in a strange new content marketing campaign, which was to rank the best places in each state to see sunrises and sunsets. My favorite one, “Ann Arbor named best place for sunrises, sunsets in Michigan,” comes from Click on Detroit, whereby a quote “study” examined Michigan’s most populated cities.”
According to Click on Detroit, “to celebrate International Astrology Day on Saturday, staff at Great Lake Stakes, a Michigan online gambling news site, looked at light pollution in the five most populated cities around the Mitten state to determine which offers the best views every morning and evening.”
Star bathing is the new outdoor travel trend we should all be trying for Summer 2023, according to Amy Beecham at Stylist.
Evidently, as an attempt to destress and promote mindfulness, romanticism about sleeping under the stars has birthed a 70% increase in searches for the term ‘star bathing’ on Hipcamp. And to be sure, “Hipcamp recommends checking a stargazing calendar which outlines major astrological events – like supermoons, pink moons, and star showers.”
Industry Must Face an Inconvenient Truth — Most LED Lights at Night are Unhealthy
Dr. Martin Moore-Ede, a circadian clock expert, recently published an article in LEDs Magazine chastising the lighting industry for not recognizing and reigning in the negative externalities of its products. Per the piece, such effects are, obesity, diabetes, depression, cancer, and more.
He cites three categories of industry responses, making the correlation that long term Denial or outright Ignorance of the Facts, may result in “asbestos-scale liabilities or draconian regulations.”
Per the piece, a recent survey by the Circadian Light Research Center of 2,697 peer reviewed scientific articles confirmed that human circadian clocks are highly sensitive to blue wavelengths, and that exposure to such wavelengths leads to major health disorders.
Moore-Ede calls for the industry to harvest the “commercial opportunity” to greatly limit future liability by creating and managing its own standards for circadian modulated lighting.
Unpacking the Wallpack, by Dan Weissman in LD+A Magazine.
Weissman, who recently purchased a telescope for his family in Cambridge, MA, discovered that the scope could only afford him views of some solar system objects and a few brightly burning stars.
The ire of Weissman’s pen takes the shape of a rectangular fixtures, be it box like or simply a panel these days, that typically hang off the side of an exterior wall or above an exterior door. “Devoid of aesthetic value” this light is often put up under the “pretense of security and safety” by “recommended practices and adopted municipal codes.”
Weissman recognizes labels that often accompany, what he calls, “Glare bombs,” including “contractor-select,” “energy efficient,” or “light pollution friendly.”
Further, per an earlier LD+A article, such lighting driven by its extreme contrasts is exceedingly common in minority communities where light is weaponized as a tool of power. It becomes a “device of alienation, creating a zone of control and separation.”
Weissman recognizes that the true reason such fixtures are selected often comes down to cost. He recognizes that it may take equally as much cost to persuade building and homeowners away from such lighting into the realm of more responsible, lower lumen, shielded lighting.
Weissman calls for producers of these glare bombs to be labeled as polluters, putting them in line with fossil fuel manufacturers and PFAS makers.
Songbirds, dusk and clear skies: Scientists explore migratory flights, by Erin Blakemore.
Bird migration season is ending here in the Mid-Atlantic. I was lucky enough to catch several Baltimore Orioles and Indigo Buntings last week. Researchers looked at 400 songbirds from 9 major species, “including the yellow-rump warbler, American redstart and Bicknell’s thrush.”
The question they hoped to answer was how are these birds so darn precise in identifying the best time to take off for their nightly migration? Scientists found that 90% of the migrating birds in the study took off within 69 minutes of dusk. A “much narrower takeoff window,” that even shocked the research team!
Per the study, taking off at night is all about maximum flight time. In addition to being able to precisely schedule their take offs, a feat that every airline I’ve flown with over the past few years has proven inept at, birds also are apparently good meteorologists! They often depart when the atmospheric pressure rises over a day’s span. Other factors also trigger migration, including sex, age, and celestial cues.
‘Lights Out’ initiative appears to be saving birds from crashing into Philly buildings by Sophia Schmidt.
Preliminary results indicate that bird death counts are down 70% at one Market Street tower, since it began its participation in Lights Out. As we spoke about on a previous show, birds utilize the stars to navigate, but city lights can disorient the birds. Combine the lights with reflective or transparent glass, and that spells fatal trouble for our migrating warblers!
Per Keith Russell, a program manager for urban conservation with Audubon Mid-Atlantic, “We’ve lost almost a third of our birds – and [collisions] contributing to that. If we’re going to want to preserve the bird populations here in North America, we have to look at these types of problems. And this is a preventable one.”
The Knoxville, TN Zoo is offering up what they call “Twilight Tours” per WVLT 8. Each event will feature a guide to showcase nocturnal critters.
I did something similar in Singapore years ago. The zoo had very dim lights in the exhibits – and they kept those lights dim as you walked so that you didn’t lose your night vision. It was a very different and, might I say, peaceful experience than the typically chaotic daytime zoo.
Flashlights posing major threat to nesting sea turtles. Fox35 Orlando
Apparently, a single flashlight can deter female sea turtles from coming onto a beach and nesting. Florida, as I did not know, is home to 90% of the sea turtle nests across the world, so losing sea turtles can affect the global ecosystem.
One visitor to Cocoa Beach stated, “Just leave them alone. Stand back and look. You don’t need a flashlight.”
Another, “It’s not super surprising because more buildings go up, more technology. As it increases, nature and stuff like that decreases,” said Zoe Jovaag, whose grandfather used to take her on walks to see sea turtles.
Capture the Dark 2023 officially is under way!
The International Dark Sky Association opens up its annual photo contest complete with prizes across eight categories and an additional People’s Choice category. Voting begins on July 3rd, entries must be received by June 30th.
City Tests Traffic Light That Only Turns Green for Drivers Who Obey the Speed Limit. Erin Marquis for Jalopnik.
And hey, you better not speed in Brossard, Quebec….otherwise you may be waiting around for a while. Brossard is testing out a new traffic light that will stay red until it senses oncoming traffic. However, it will only change to green if the car is going the speed limit. Per the Jalopnik article, “FRED [the French acronym for “educational traffic calming light] forces fast drivers to stop and gives them a chance to reconsider their life choices.” Such lights are already used in Europe, but this will be the first for the Great White North.
Why the Greatest Threat to Star-Gazing Isn’t Light Pollution, and this comes to us from Dorin Elin Urrutia at Inverse.
Elin Urrutia writes, in her compelling piece, that the greatest threat to star-gazing is actually the weather. Citing notable examples of the Mount Stromlo Observatory in Australia (which burnt down due to bushfires) and the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico (which sustained structural damage following the winds of Hurricane Maria).
While the threat of human-caused climate change has presented new challenges, Elin Urrutia references proactive burns that saved Los Angeles’ Mount Wilson Observatory from flames in 2020.
On a similar note, ABC News (the Australian Broadcasting Company, not to be confused with the American Broadcasting Company), brings us “A World Without Darkness Could Be a Reality within a Few Years.”
Per Carol Redford of Astrotourism Western Australia, “There are some people in the world now who don’t actually experience darkness anymore. They’re in a city like Beijing, Toyoko, or London. In all those big cities, it’s never dark, it’s always light. During the day of course with the sun, but then during the night with all of the artificial light. They’re not experiencing darkness, and definitely not seeing those beautiful stars…”
In the 66 years since the implementation of the UN Convention on the Peaceful Use of Outerspace, around 11,000 satellites orbit the Earth. But it’s about to get wayyy busier. Driven by innovations that have led to dramatic reductions in costs, over the next ten years, Per attorney Steven Freeland, it’s anticipated that somewhere between 100,000 to 500,000 objects will be sent up. Let me pause on that for a second.
On the travel front, we stay in the land down under, “Aussie region determined to keep its darkness is a stargazer’s dream” by Chantelle Francis of News.com.AU.
The town of Swam Reach, population 270, resides in a 3200sq km region of Southern Australia that received its International Dark Sky Reserve status over three years ago. On a scale of darkness between 0 – 22, the River Murray Dark Sky Reserve at Swam Reach, measures in at a whopping 21.9!
Tourism has become a growing business. The reserve hosts numerous telescope pads and offers tours of the night sky. There’s hope that an observatory and/or planetarium may also arrive in due course.
Best smart lights for outdoors in 2023, Brittney Vincent of CBS Essentials.
Oh there’s a lot not to love here, but it does fall in line with last month’s ‘Lumens are Coming’ article.
For those of you who feel the need to light your trees, because for some reason they need light at night I guess…I’ll try and pretend it’s not solely for ostentatious and narcissistic reasons. By the way, does anyone remember when those were negative characteristics?
The article features spotlights that can be programmed to over 16 MILLION colors including…lucky for us, ALL shades of white….which you can also do for a 500 lumen flood light set.
And hey, Ring now has solar path lighting. Don’t worry though, the fixtures themselves put out up to 80 lumens of sideways light.
You know, it’s astounding when you look at some of these pictures. The amount of redundant lighting. It honestly makes no sense to me. You have a porch light, which lights up the path. Path lighting, which lights up the path. And, in the one picture, god awful frontward facing flood lights, which also light up the path. How bright do you need these paths!? I digress. But the lumens are indeed coming.
LDS Church will get to light up its Heber Valley Temple after all, but the faith didn’t get everything it wanted, Blake Apgar of the Salt Lake Tribune.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fought hard to rid itself of any nighttime lighting responsibility by pressuring Wasatch County, Utah officials to approve new lighting rules that would enable the church to light a proposed new temple the same way it does for every other temple.
The Church received permission to uplight the temple, enabling an exception to be made in Wasatch’s rather stringent nighttime lighting rulebook. However, the temple will be restricted by the level of lumens it can use, and it must have exterior lighting turned off an hour after sunset or an hour after normal business hours.
Smart Street Lights Market is Expected to Hit USD 14,751.1 million at a 23.4% CAGR by 2030, Market Research Future Press Release
The pandemic is officially over, smart street lighting is about to boom. Combine the rush to LED fixtures with the Internet of Things, and expect to see street lights moonlighting as traffic and parking monitors, air quality meters, and more. Not to mention, “it is anticipated that camera-connected smart street lighting will increase road safety by lowering the likelihood of accidents and criminality.”
Texas now has 7 dark sky communities for spectacular star gazing, Sana Ameer, MRT.
Let’s cheer on the city of Bee Cave, everyone! Bee Cave joins a growing list of dark sky places already in the Lone Star State, including 2 Dark Sky Sanctuaries, 5 Dark Sky Parks, and 1 Dark Sky Reserve. Nighttime is alive and well in some parts of Texas!
Our Afraid of the Dark article is a bit scary! Hilton Head’s dark roads and pedestrians are deadly combo. What the town is doing about it, Blake Douglas at The Island Packet.
Per the article, 9 pedestrian and cyclist fatalities occurred since 2018, with five occurring after dark. Prior to that period, there were 28 recorded deaths from 2000 – 2016, with 20 of them taking place after dark.
In 2018, an 11 year old resident was struck and killed while walking her dog across an intersection one night. Lighting advocates began taking shape in what otherwise is a very conservation focused island. Hilton Head, SC has a limited number of street lights, priding itself on “avoiding light pollution and blending nature with construction.”
Lighting advocates appear to be, at the very least, asking for flashing crosswalk lights on the island to indicate when an individual is crossing.
It should be noted that the article shows a chart of 9 after-dark-deaths since 2014, only two of them occurred at crosswalks. In fact, during the same time frame, 6 additional deaths occurred at crosswalks during the daytime.
As a whole, the National Safety Council reports that 74.5% of pedestrian deaths occurred at night, whereby 39.1% took place in lit areas and 35.38% took place in unlit areas.
Bryan Bloch, an auto safety expert, surmises that car companies bear some of the blame – producing cheap or ineffectual headlight fixtures, and drivers themselves, who don’t realize that they need to regularly clean their headlight lenses.
Despite opposition from residents, it appears that Hilton Head will be receiving lights at two new intersections and possibly more depending on engineering studies currently in progress.
Is lighting the key variable here? Is more light going to solve pedestrian deaths?
Our featured research article of the month comes to us from Animal Conservation, “Manipulating spectra of artificial light affects movement patterns of bats along ecological corridors.”
Bats are already known to have a wide range of responses to artificial light at night (also known as ALAN). Fast flying species tend to be more opportunistic in the presence of ALAN while slower ones tend to be more light averse. We know that “long wavelengths and reduced intensity” can minimize their environmental effects on bats. It’s not unheard of for bats to travel upwards of “tens of km per night.” Furthermore, bats are very dependent on the landscape and the structures within those landscapes.
Despite the nuances between species, the consensus is that ALAN, especially high intensity ALAN, negatively affects bats. This study attempted to answer what exactly bats do when they encounter ALAN – how do they react depending on different types of ALAN.
The study used three different light fixtures – one green, one red, and one white. The control was devoid of light fixtures. The researchers attempted to ascertain the behavior of bats as they encountered lights adjacent to woody areas. The researchers looked at three different bat groupings based on their foraging-echo location behavior, that being one of open field foraging, forest edge foraging, and narrow space – or more aptly forest foragers.
Researchers found that open and edge foraging bats increased their activity close to white and green lights, and to a lesser extent red lights. However, narrow space bats were more likely to veer away from all colors of lighting. Edge foragers were also less likely to cross a white light.
The positive effects of white and green light on open and edge foraging bats appear to be attributed to the accumulation of insects around light sources containing more blue light.
The nighttime sky over Oahu will be lit up with green lasers in the coming days. Here’s why. Hawaii News Now
Before we close up today, do you live in Hawaii? I know I wish I did!
If so, do you recall seeing green lasers streak across the night sky? Well, the Army Corps of Engineers was using lidar at night to complete a coastal mapping survey.
Why did they survey at night? Specifically, why did they do this between midnight to 5am? Simply b/c the airspace is so busy, that time was the only chance they had to complete the survey. The remaining survey was completed during daytime hours.

Why I Push For It: Tails vs Coco Bandicoot
TN by me
Incase you're all curious, Tails vs Coco Bandicoot is my favorite match-up of all time and I'm about to tell you why. Now I don't really do posts of "Why I push it for" because I don't have time nor do I want to do these kinds of posts since they can be time wasting for me. But here I'd rather discuss this for my favorite match-up.
Reasons of wanting this
First and all, Tails is my favorite fictional character of all time. He's my most favorite ever and was one of my childhood heroes. Tails along with Sonic, Mario, Knuckles, Luigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong are my most favorite characters ever, and I'm a huge fan of all 8 of these guys (Mostly Tails as I've mentioned earlier). Coco Bandicoot is a great character as well and Crash Bandicoot games were my childhood too along with Spyro. Imo this match-up is perfect in almost every category, and here are some explanations.
Connections
Credit to Mr Huda Himself for the connections
super smart yellowish orange anthropomorphic animals who made their debut in the second game of their franchise, they have a little sibling type relationship with the lead character and often serves as a grounding force making sure they don’t get in over their heads but are always ready to jump into the Frey and help out if need be, they’re geniuses creating a wide verity of inventions/techniques that they themselves and the main character used to save the day or just serving as technical support hacking or tampering with enemy machines in fact The only person who can rival them in intelligence is their series evil mad scientist main villain, they have a close friendship with a red, hotheaded super strong anthropomorphic animal who originally served as a pawn of the villains before eventually turning over to the side of good and in turn creating an inseparable trio, their main way of physical offense is spinning into their enemies to deal damage (The spindash/tail swipe attack for tails and the spin attack for coco) they even have a stronger version of their technique with the word tornado in it’s name (the tornado spin and the death tornado), they have to collect a set number of mystical items to achieve a stronger invulnerable form (7 chaos emeralds and 3 aku aku masks).
Fight Potential and Interaction potential
Imo, the fight potential fits perfect. Both of their physical attacks like the punches, Tails swipe and kick, and their tornado move (Or we can use the spin-dash) meshes each-other really good. But that's not all, they also have their gadgets. Tails and Coco can shoot (Arm canon and Wumpa Bazooka), both can use bombs, invulnerability items, attack reflection, force fields, coco's time manipulation vs tails's speed, their mechs, planes, and it just goes on. I also think they would have a reason to fight, like where Coco can probably just take the Chaos emerald thinking it's one of the gems she's been looking for, and Tails would take the emerald back because it doesn't belong to Coco Bandicoot. And as I've mentioned earlier, their physical moves and gadgets is what makes the fight potential great and just works perfect for each other. Tails vs Coco however I think works better as a 3D fight. Coco Bandicoot has terrible sprites, and I just think the 3D environment just goes off better. The fight could also end off with the planes or mechs doing the final blow. Or have a surprise attack waiting at the end (Similar with Tails vs Luigi).
Debate
While it's not the closest, it's also not the biggest stomp. While yes Tails does indeed stat stomp Coco, Coco does have some good chances especially thanks to the elemental masks she can use from Crash Bandicoot 4, and with the new Crash Team Rumble game coming soon where it might show off with her new abilities. Coco does have great abilities that can give Tails some trouble so I wouldn't dare underestimate Coco if I were you. Tho Tails should still take this win and he might arguably be more smarter.
Music Potential
Since Tails is from the Sonic series, I think the music would be great. A combination with the Sonic adventure and og Crash Bandicoot trilogy music would be really great. And also maybe we can use a female singer (I mean Tails theme is singed from a female) to do some good vocals for this match-up. Anyways I don't have much to say about this section since I don't follow the whole music potential, but I think the music should be pretty cool.
Alternatives
I'm going to discuss Tails's alternatives

TN by Death battle
Luigi: Honestly I find this one boring. And this is coming from a guy who's a fan of Luigi as well. However the rematch of this is just a huge no for me. I really didn't think Luigi vs Tails was a good Death battle episode, and the rematch just feels to cliche to me with a different outcome and nothing else. They're also my some of my 2 favorite characters so it kinda pains me to see these 2 fight each other to the death.

TN by StrangeFate
Diddy Kong: Honestly I can't stand this idea. First off I find the fight potential to be the same as Tails vs Coco, but worse and nothing interesting. While yes Diddy can fly, and they can do acrobatics, but I don't see how else the fight will turn out to be. Secondly some of the connections are just wrong to me. "Tails and Diddy both debuted in the sequel game" the problem is Tails debuted in Sonic 2 while Diddy debuted in the first Donkey Kong Country game. "The main hero of the series is like an older brother to both of them, and their purpose in the game is to help the person in combat via two player, either as a separate person, or by jumping on their back to help them fly" while most of it is right, Diddy is more like a cousin to DK, while Tails is like a brother to Sonic, 2 different things in relatives. And Tails doesn't jump on Sonic's back, he grabs Sonic with his hands while Sonic grabs on to Tails as well. Also Diddy Kong didn't really grab onto DK's back until DK country returns which came out in 2010. "Both have a close friend/girlfriend who share the same basic powers as them (Cream and Dixie Kong), and they have teamed up with them in numerous games before." ok seriously? Yes Diddy Kong as a Girlfriend named Dixie Kong, but Tails? No Cream is not Tails's girlfriend, it was never confirmed canon. And unlike Diddy and Dixie Kong, Tails and Cream didn't team up in numerous games and they only teamed up in Sonic advance 3, and that's not saying much since it's an excuse for Tails and cream teaming up with Sonic, Knuckles, and Amy. So yeah I find some of the connections wrong and feels a little misrepresented. Third like I've said with Luigi, they're some of my 2 favorite characters so seeing them fight to the Death pains me.

TN by EpicMonkeyTheMonkey
Yoshi: This idea sucks too. While yes it has connections, I really don't like the interaction potential. If you remembered Strife's version of Yoshi vs Tails, it explains why I hate the match-up so much because imo they would have terrible reasons of trying to fight and kill each other. And while they kinda mesh pretty well, the dialogue potential is just plain awful. And I said this with Luigi and Diddy Kong, they're some of my 2 favorite characters so I really don't want them fighting each other to the Death as well as having horrible reasons to battle each other.
Ok I think I've already said enough with Tails vs the Mario characters, time for his other alternatives and I won't explain too much.

TN by Omnicidalclown1992
Donatello: Imo it's a great match-up. Both of them are geniuses and meshes off the potential pretty good. Debate Club's version of Tails vs Donatello rocks as well.

TN by Kiss and Kancer
Fox Mccloud: You might not enjoy this one but I love this idea. Their flying machines (Tornado and Arwing) can go off pretty good and would be a pretty cool ground fight as well.

TN by me
Sailor Mercury (As Archie Tails): Honestly this is my favorite alternative. If I want to see Archie Tails, Sailor Mercury does the trick. It can be an awesome multiverse fight especially when factoring Turbo Tails and Eternity Sailor Mercury in the animation.

TN by Jamessonic
Tita Russell: Despite my lack of knowledge of the Legend of heroes Trials series, I really love this idea. From what I've heard the fight potential could be great, and I've heard Jamessonic and JackOfAllTrades really vibes with this idea. And I bet PitTheSwordMaster probably likes this one too and it might be his preferred Tails match-up. Anyways I don't know what to say but I really love this match-up.

TN by goodstar64
Numbuh 2: This one is pretty good too. It has some pretty hilarious fight potential and can go off well with their gadgets.

TN by Elsancho369
Kenya: I guess this one can work.

TN by Elsancho369
Merucho: Same reasons as Kenya.

TN by DatOneKid364
Nepgear: Honestly, not bad imo, nothing else to say tbh.

TN by Gridnack
Ran Yakumo (As Archie Tails): This one is actually pretty good, tho Touhou debates can be really weird imo, so I don't know if I should fully love this one.

TN by Zelrom
Twilight Sparkle: Honestly if it wasn't for my hatred for Tails vs Luigi rematch, Diddy Kong, and Yoshi, then I think Tails vs Twilight would've been my most hated match-up for Tails. According to the show itself, I've seen Twilight use magic. Twilight isn't really a physical fighter, she's a magic fighter. I really want Tails against characters that can fight off physically and Coco is a really good match for Tails, plus has their gadgets which is what Tails vs Coco does so much better. I don't think Tails's gadgets against Twilight's magic and spells would mesh well against Tails at all, and that's the problem I have with this fight potential. While it has connections, the rest of this match-up is just terrible all around. Don't get me wrong, I like Twilight Sparkle and I think she's a fine character, but I really don't like how the fight potential would work against for these 2. It does make sense to why I see people hate Tails vs Twilight Sparkle.

I won't go over much with Coco but I'll talk about one alternative for her.

TN by SonicPal
Diddy Kong: This one is actually very good. It Coco's case, Diddy Kong is a very good alternative. In can have similar vibes I have with Donkey Kong vs Crash Bandicoot for fight potential, except Diddy is smaller and can pull out weapons different than what Donkey Kong has against Crash Bandicoot. Diddy Kong isn't a good matchup in Tails's case imo, but in Coco Bandicoot's case, yeah I really like this one.

TN by Me
Conclusion
So yeah this is my favorite match-up of all time. I really love it for it's connections, fight potential, themes, interactions, and it's such a great match-up in so many ways and why I really want this fight to happen. I sure hope it does happen since I really didn't think Tails vs Luigi was a good episode honestly, and Coco Bandicoot just fits Tails really perfectly imo.

At least it could be worse. I could have been adopted by am amisH family and told my parents were druggies that left me in a garbage can.
When do we start a class action lawsuit for having our first amendment rights violated as well as our right to a decent education.
I hope religions dies sooner than later.

2023.05.31 02:08 toomuchkaeti One of *those* walks

Oops this got long. I think I just needed to type it all out and share with people who get it.
Back story: Our older dog (2M, a wacky mix of Aussie, ACD, BC, APBT, russell terrier and a hint of Yorkie) is reactive to unknown people and dogs. It started as frustration-based leash and barrier reactivity with dogs only, then morphed into something more intense and fear based. In adolescence we started to see worsening territorial aggression.
We’ve done all the things, and made a lot of mistakes along the way (CC and LAT where our early trainers coached us to do it “as long as he was taking treats.” Turns out he can be taking treats long past the point where learning is possible, and all that got him was a conflicted relationship with food because we were shoving it in his face during high stress moments…).
As people in this know, the learning curve is high with your first reactive dog. But we dug in, took the Amy Cook classes, read all the books, practiced pattern games, found a great VB and better trainers, prioritized fulfilling his needs and tried to reduce rehearsal (almost impossible where we live in a large city, but we do a lot of sniffspots to minimize neighborhood walks). Even with all the things, he seemed to be getting worse.
But we’ve finally been seeing glimmers of progress after a few incredibly difficult months of escalating behavior and unsuccessful meds trials. We’ve had walks where there are no reactions to surprise triggers (!), and may have found a good combo of meds for him. I’m trying to hold on to those wins, but then walks like today’s happen.
It felt like everything that could go wrong, did. We stick to alleys to avoid people, and choose quiet times of day, head always on a swivel. But while he was focused on hunting some alley vermin, a guy in a hat surprised us coming around a corner (a combo of all his worst triggers). We started to u-turn and run the other way and a person walking their tiny puppy was coming the other direction down the alley, so we were effectively boxed in and all I could do was hold him back and try to mitigate the reaction. The guy walked past us sneering and muttered something about controlling my dog. (My dog that was wearing a big “reactive — needs space” flag on his leash…)
He was completely shut down after our walk in a way I haven’t seen in a long time. It made me so sad, and even though I try to shake it off, I also feel the shame of the neighbors’ glares (or their fear, which feels even worse). You can’t exactly stop and have a measured conversation about how your dog is just having a hard time and feels big feelings, but is actually the bestest good boy, while you’re holding him back as he lunges and snarls at a person.
I hate feeling this way. I just want him to have some ease in his daily life, and want the same for us. Now I’m trying to decompress with my favorite coping mechanism: browsing Zillow for unaffordable houses with yards.
If you made it this far, thanks for listening/reading. Give your Big Feelings pups some scritches from me. xx

2023.05.27 20:26 SillyAd9410 A Semi-Collaborative Pop Culture TL #10

YOU decide what events should change in the world of pop culture, be it real or ASB (future movie gets shown in the past, an actor does/doesn't die, alternate casting choices, unmade media possibly getting made, media is rewritten, a change in the box office or something new entirely)!
I document what happens in a current timeline of Earth!
We all have fun!
CURRENT TIMELINE:
1818: Mary Shelley's The Modern Prometheus, a novel in which scientist Henry Frankenstein creates a sapient creature named Prometheus is made. Prometheus becomes a stalwart of the monster genre.
1907-1908: A young comedian named Charlie Chaplin refuses to accept the offer of Fred Karno to come to the U.S. He becomes a famous comedian, often incorporating a character he named The Tramp in his stand-up routines.
1912: The Olympic ship crashes upon hitting an iceberg, becoming a memorable event. James Cameron's Olympic (1997) would be the first film to gross $1B, even entering the National Film Registry.
1931: Frankenstein and his Prometheus, an adaptation of The Modern Prometheus starring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff as Henry and Prometheus is a box-office smash. It would enter the National Film Registry in 1991.
1941: Fleischer Studios' Mr. Bug Goes to Town is a box office success, saving the studio. Today it is one of Disney's biggest competitors, along with Warner Bros.
1951: Fawcett Comics wins a lawsuit over National Comics for the rights to the characters of Captain Marvel and Superman. While National Comics would die in obscurity, Fawcett Comics would be Marvel's biggest competitor.
1962: Marilyn Monroe doesn't die. She goes into hiding in Las Vegas doing revue shows. Discovered by higher ups at NBC, she signs on to The Marilyn Monroe Show, a sketch comedy show that runs until her death in 1999.
1966: Warner Bros.' Twister comes out, becoming the highest grossing film of the year. It would spawn "Tornado-mania", a series of tornado movies made to copy its success. It would enter the National Film Registry in 1996.
1969: Nixon resigns his presidency the become a talk show host. The Dick Nixon show airs until 1983.
Make America Great Again - written and directed by Mel Brooks - is released. The film stars Ronald Reagan as himself as he decides to run for President after becoming a washed up movie star - promising to “Make America Great Again”. Wacky shenanigans ensue, including President Reagan trying to build a massive wall on the Southern border to stop Soviet influence, claiming that “both sides have very fine people” in regards to the Civil Rights Movement, and him accidentally starting a cult about how hippies are secretly stooges of a global satanic cult run by the elites.
The film is a critical and commercial success and becomes one of the greatest and funniest comedies of all time. It enters the National Film Registry in 1999.
The Dick Cavett Show airs on ABC, becoming the main competitor to NBC's Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. It would end in 1996 to make way for its new replacement The Jon Stewart Show.
Creedence Clearwater Revival release a song about the Civil Rights Movement called Fortunate Son. It becomes their signature song. It enters the National Recording Registry in 2013.
1974: Star Trek: The Continuing Mission, a revival of the original 60s series, airs in syndication until 1981.
1974-1979: Michael John Kricfalusi becomes an anti-Rhodesian mercenary during the Rhodesian Bush War. He becomes a POW by forces from Apartheid South Africa. As a result, he is physically and mentally scarred.
1979: Ozzy Osbourne goes into rehab and continues to play for Black Sabbath, leading to them getting a Beatles-like Renaissance in the 80s, making Heavy Metal one of the 80s most notable music genres.
1980-1981: From February 1980 to August 1981, John Kricfalusi would heal his mental wounds at a mental institution.
1982: John Kricfalusi founds Spümcø, an animation studio that was founded due to John's perceived views on how Hanna-Barbera and Rankin/Bass, two studios he worked at, failed to make good cartoons.
1983: E.T. for the Atari proves to be a very good game, making millions for Atari. This would inspire them to improve their games on their future consoles such as the 5200 and 7800, leading them to become a fierce competitior in the gaming market. The last Atari console came out in the early 2000s.
You Nutzy Rascals!, a short made by John K., is the first to feature prototype designs of Ren and Stimpy.
1985: The War of the Worlds, a film made in collaboration with Disney and Jeff Wayne, based on his musical album adapting the H.G. Wells story, hits theaters. It is a critical and commercial success, cited for starting the Disney Renaissance. Disney and Jeff Wayne would collaborate two more times, making animated adaptations of The Modern Prometheus (1988) and The Time Machine (1992). It would enter the National Film Registry in 2022.
Warner Communications buys Warner Amex-Satellite Entertainment to make Warner MTV Networks.
1986: Ravel's Bolero becomes the theme to The Legend of Zelda. It would later serve to be the theme for the Zelda games in Japan, with a different theme for NTSC releases.
Cliff Burton survives a car crash and continues to play bass for Metallica, helping put thrash metal on the mainstream map.
1987: Morrissey and Johnny Marr become frenemies. The Smiths continue into the 1990s.
1988: During production of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Harrison Ford is shot and killed by a loaded prop gun. This would lead to it being hastily recut in time for 1989. It would lead to a heavy burden on Lucasfilm. The documentary Ford - Spielberg's Right Hand Man would be released in 2008 to great success.
1989: Doctor Who is saved from cancellation by BBC. It remains one of the longest running TV shows.
Sergio Leone dies of old age. He is remembered for his westerns as well as Don Quixote, The Phantom, and Leningrad: The 900 Days.
1990: John K. creates Big House Blues, the pilot for The Ren & Stimpy Show, which is picked up by Nickelodeon.
1991: Eddie Vedder dies in a car crash before the first Pearl Jam album is released. They find a new lead in Chris Cornell, who also sings for Soundgarden until their demise in 1997.
Ren & Stimpy airs on Nickelodeon, along with Doug, Rugrats, Tiny Toon Adventures, Taz-Mania (both this show and TTA would later air in syndication) and Big Beast Quintet (cancelled in 1993). It is currently the longest running American animated series, beating out Matt Groening's The Simpsons, who cancelled the show in 1998 in favor of working on the long-running Futurama which still airs today.
Tim Burton is attached to direct an adaptation of The Addams Family TV show as a movie. It would later spawn three sequels, with Tim leaving after the second movie. The latter two would be critically panned.
1992: Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace comes out, becoming the highest grossing film of the year. Episodes II and III would later come out in 1995 and 1998 respectively.
J.R.R. Tolkien dies at 100, finishing The New Shadow and The Silmarillion. He was also known for being war minister of the UK from 1940 to 1945.
Stephen Hillenburg is invited to work on Ren & Stimpy after showing his short film Wormholes at the TIFF.
Cartoon Network begins after Ted Turner merges with Viacom in 1986 and buys the Hanna-Barbera library in 1991.
1993: Spielberg quits directing after doing Schindler's List. This not only cancels plans for a Jurassic Park sequel, but also an adaptation of Supertoys Last All Summer Long.
1994: During filming of The Crow, Brandon Lee survives a shot from a prop gun. He would propel into superstardom. He is now known for playing Neo in The Matrix franchise and Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat (1995).
Kurt Cobain announces the breakup of Nirvana as he goes into rehab. In 2002, the band reunited for You Know You're Right, an album that became a top seller. They still perform to this day.
1995: YouTube, a video sharing site, is released. It would not gain much popularity until 2001, where an influx of YouTubers would bring it to stardom.
Toy Story, a stop motion film, gains critical acclaim due to its incredible scale, becoming the 2nd highest grossing film of the year.
Sarah Michelle Gellar dies in a kayaking incident days before the release of her only film Clueless. This would cause Clueless to become the highest grossing film of the year and become known as one of the best teen films. It enters the National Film Registry in 2005. Bad Boys, a film released the same day as Clueless, would become the 6th highest grossing film of the year despite mixed reviews.
Spotify, a humble music downloading site, releases. In 1997, it would change into a music streaming site, and would often show ads for the latest in music.
Selena Quintalla survives being shot. Jennifer Lopez wanes in popularity.
1996: The Nintendo 64DD comes out in a partnership with Phillips, revolutionising the console industry by introducing CD memory, rising it above the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. One of the top best selling games would be Super Mario 64 2, the sequel to Super Mario 64. The 64DD would serve as motivation for Sega to complete Sonic X-Treme by 1997, which becomes a huge hit. This would give Sega the boost it needed to continue making consoles. Other Mario games made for the 64DD include Mario Takes America and Super Mario's Wacky Worlds.
The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), which had been under a state similar to the Atari 2600, releases its last two games: Super Mario Legends, a game similar in style to the Mario Land games released by Nintendo R&D1, which becomes a minor hit and Animaniacs, a port of Konami's Game Boy game which got mixed reviews.
Tupac survives being shot while having a drive in Las Vegas. He still has a rap career.
Ren & Stimpy Go To Hollywood, a film released by Warner Bros., becomes the highest grossing animated film of the year, making over $600M. It has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This film would also have one of Ronald Reagan's last acting roles.
NDR Filmes' Cassiopeia gets fame for being the first completely computer-animated film. It gets an English dub for a worldwide release. It enters the National Film Registry in 2006.
After his work on Ren & Stimpy, Stephen Hillenburg pitches his own show to Nickelodeon about a sea sponge.
Rapper and music producer Andre "Dr. Dre" Young is shot and killed by a vengefully spiteful Suge Knight in a drive-by shooting, since Young left Death Row Records after accusing Knight of corruption the month prior. His death leads to tributes from fans and colleagues alike, and his first album The Chronic is praised for being influential. Tupac Shakur, in addition to being a rapper, assumes Dr. Dre's role as a music producer out of respect for his newly deceased friend. After Suge Knight is arrested and imprisoned for life due to murdering Young, Shakur takes over Death Row Records. The Chronic enters the National Recording Registry in 2019.
1996-2000: A teen-oriented sitcom, Still Clueless: The Story of Tai and Dionne, runs on ABC from September 20, 1996 to May 19, 2000 for a total of four seasons. A spinoff and continuation to the 1995 film "Clueless", starring the late Sarah Michelle Gellar as Cher Horowitz, and breakouts Regina Hall as Dionne Davenport and Brittany Murphy as Tai Frasier, the series follows protagonists and best friends Tai Frasier and Dionne Davenport as they navigate through life in college without their late friend Cher Horowitz who tragically overdosed to death at a party but hilarious scenarios ensue for the two friends as they mature together in college. Created by Amy Heckerling, Brittany Murphy and Regina Hall reprise their respective roles as Tai Frasier and Dionne Davenport from the 1995 film, and also stars Alan Rickman as the main antagonist, the corrupt and unfairly strict college dean William Davidson. The series becomes very beloved, successful, and memorable, just like its 1995 predecessor. The first season has 23 episodes, the second and third seasons have 22 episodes each, while the fourth and final season has 25 episodes, totalling up to 92 episodes. New episodes always would premiere at 8:30PM on Friday nights, with either a TV-PG or TV-14 rating. The show had a direct competitor in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, another teen-oriented series, which would on Fox for only one season consisting of only eighteen episodes from September 20, 1996 to May 9, 1997. Created by Joss Whedon and based loosely on the 1992 film of the same name, the series stars teen sensation Alicia Silverstone as Buffy Anne Summers, a teenage girl who fights evil vampirical creatures. The show would have a more darker and serious tone unlike it's more lighthearted and comedic competitor "Still Clueless: The Story of Tai and Dionne" on ABC, and new episodes would premiere at 8:30PM on Friday nights, all having a TV-14 rating. Of the two shows, "Buffy" would be less successful as the show would have a lukewarm reception and audiences would more than likely watch the more successful "Still Clueless", which would have an otherwise more welcoming reception (like it's 1995 predecessor). The show's lead actress Alicia Silverstone would still have a briefly successful career in Hollywood; unfortunately, her career would be cut short as she would die from a serious chest infection on February 11, 2002, at the age of only 25.
1997: Reddit, a news and discussion board, is released. It becomes very, very popular.
The Notorious B.I.G. survives a shooting like his friend and collaborator Tupac, and he continues to make music.
Aspiring rapper Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs is killed in a gang shootout in Los Angeles, California; however, right-wing news network Fox News reports the shootout as having happened in New York City, New York (which is untrue). This leads to rapper Christopher "Biggie Smalls" Wallace recording a single dedicated to Combs called "I'll Be Missing You" (which heavily samples "Every Breath You Take" by The Police) which was included as a bonus track on No Way Out, Combs' first and only debut album released posthumously on July 22, 1997. The album became influential in the years since Combs' death, proving that, even in death, one can still have a rap career and be influential. No Way Out would enter the National Recording Registry in 2007.
1998: Neon Genesis Evangelion is unknowingly localized by 4Kids, leading to a HEAVILY censored English dub that makes the show popular during the late 90s-early 00s.
Chris Farley wakes from a coma due to a drug overdose. After deciding to give the role of Shrek to Mike Myers his friend, he gets the role of Doug Heffernan on The King of Queens.
Phil Hartman‘s wife goes cold turkey, leading to Phil getting the roles of Zapp Brannigan in Futurama, minor roles in South Park, Avery Bullock in American Dad!, minor roles in Adam Ruins Everything, Alex from Madagascar, and the Magic Mirror in Shrek.
1999: Stephen Hillenburg's SpongeBob SquarePants airs on Nickelodeon. Although it is a hit at first, work complications, problems outsourcing animation to the studio Gainax, and the banned episode Wrasslin' Maniacs where SpongeBob and Patrick beat up Squidward, Hillenburg is fired from the show in 2002.
Tommy Boy's Return, the sequel to Tommy Boy, releases in theaters. It is considered a cult classic today.
2000: Battlefield Earth is released in theaters to be a huge success, ending up the 8th highest grossing film of the year. This would cause an interest in works by L. Ron Hubbard, making the Church of Scientology a rising religion. Battlefield Earth 2 would later release in 2003 to similar acclaim.
4Kids is bought by Warner Communications. As a result, more anime airs on Kids WB.
The Atari Cougar, Atari's final console before being bought by Jakks Pacific in 2002, is released. It is a cult classic console.
Tim Burton's Wizard of Oz gains mixed to positive reviews, and makes the top 10 list of highest grossing films of the year.
2001: Grand Theft Auto III, the third entry in the GTA series is cancelled following 9/11. The game would later redevelop into Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which was released in 2004.
Spy Kids, Quentin Tarantino's first kids' film is released in theaters to mixed reviews, but becomes a cult classic. Two more sequels were released in the two years after it, all would get the same fate.
During 9/11, Kevin James dies after being squished by falling debris from the North Tower.
2002: Netflix, the world's first ever online streaming service for film and TV, launches. They release their first Netflix Original - an epic drama gangster film called American Gangster starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe and directed by Ridley Scott - five years later on November 2, 2007, after buying the distribution rights from Universal Pictures (who were set to be the original proprietors). All of their films and series are also given DVD and/or Blu-ray releases, courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, who owns the home media rights to Netflix Original films/series etc.
2003: Call of Duty, a war shooter game, sells 200,000 copies, making for poor sales. No sequels are planned. The Battlefield series gains from this.
Star Trek: The Original Generation, a Star Trek prequel series, airs for two seasons on Fox before cancellation.
Sony launches the American feed of 24-hour anime channel Animax, which overtakes Adult Swim's Toonami in popularity.
Sylvester Stallone becomes Governor of California until 2011.
TIME names Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein as Person of the Year due to being "One of the great dictators of the modern age".
2004: Fallout 3 releases on Windows to high ratings, saving Interplay from bankruptcy. They would later release 2 console games, Fallout 4 and Fallout 5. Many spinoff games would be made.
Hillenburg's company United Plankton Pictures makes the Newgrounds webseries The Motherfucking Patchy the Pirate Show, focusing on the misadventures of Patchy the Pirate.
2005: Minecraft, a web browser game is released by Mojang with the help of a team that planned a game known as Terraria, where it would be very successful until 2009, when a 3D version for Java was released. It is currently owned by Microsoft, who still makes updates for it.
SpongeBob SquarePants is quietly cancelled due to declining ratings.
FOX airs The Office, an American adaptation of the British mockumentary series of the same name, airing until 2013 for nine seasons. It becomes one of the most memorable sitcoms of all time, winning several Emmys. Mr. Blue Sky becomes the theme song.
2006: Warner Communications contacts Hillenburg for an adult-only SpongeBob reboot.
Night at the Museum is released to mixed reviews as it becomes a box-office bomb. With plans for a sequel dead in the water, Fox sells the rights to Sony in 2007 who plans to reboot the series, but also keep the distribution rights for the original film.
Blockbuster buys Netflix, moving the website to Blockbuster.com, and naming it Blockbuster Online. After all of its stores were closed, it becomes Blockbuster+.
2007: Kanye West dies in a car crash before his album Graduation releases, causing him to be mourned. This would lead to many people buying the album, creating a short-lived rap revival that would temporarily mark the end of gangsta rap until 2010.
Owen Wilson commits suicide. In discussions about the "Frat Pack", he is replaced by Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. Drillbit Taylor and Tropic Thunder are both dedicated to his memory. Plans for a sequel to Cars are cancelled by Pixar and Disney.
NBC’s Heroes is cancelled after one season due to both low ratings and behind the scenes controversy. It remains a cult classic show much like Firefly or Buffy.
2007-2011: Identically similar to events in our world, screenwriter Simon Monjack and actress and "Clueless" sensation Brittany Murphy (who still starred in this alternate reality's version of the 1995 film "Clueless", but here she instead co-stars with rising co-stars Sarah Michelle Gellar playing Cher, and Regina Hall playing Dionne) are about to marry back in May 2007, but Murphy calls the marriage to Monjack off at the exact same wedding. This causes a scandal that briefly kills her good reputation, and gets her blacklisted in Hollywood (for a while). In this alternate history, Simon Monjack is put in prison for attempting murder on Brittany Murphy, but here, is killed by a crazed cellmate whilst serving time (said crazed cellmate also happens to be a fan of Brittany Murphy). Going back to Portman, she would become an indie darling in independent cinema, however her career would be cut short when she would die in a car crash on July 19, 2009, just one month and ten days after her 28th birthday. In December 2009, Brittany Murphy is then offered the lead role in Darren Aronofsky's upcoming psychological horror film "Black Swan", about a troubled ballerina. The film would co-star Melanie Lynskey as the troubled ballerina's rival, and like in our world, Winona Ryder, Barbara Hershey, and Vincent Cassel. The film released in December 2010 (like in our world), to rave reviews, with critics calling it Brittany Murphy's finest appearance yet. Murphy would then take home the Best Actress Oscar as well as the Best Dramatic Performance in a Movie Golden Globe for her performance in the film in 2011. Murphy would then continue her acting career following a big career boost, as well as her singing/musical career at the same time. In fact, she releases a fairly successful debut album in March 2011 simply called "Brittany", to positive reviews. It would then become the best selling musical album of the year, even winning her a Grammy in 2012.
2008: Bulletman, the highest grossing film of the year, marks the beginning of the successful Fawcett Cinematic Universe (FCU). It would enter the National Film Registry in 2020.
During the premiere of Tropic Thunder, Tom Cruise announces his retirement from entertainment and Scientology. He spends the rest of his life quietly as a Buddhist in England. As Dwayne Johnson takes Tom's place, Paramount announces plans to reboot the Mission: Impossible franchise (though nothing comes from it).

2023.05.26 15:12 SillyAd9410 A Semi-Collaborative Pop Culture TL #9

YOU decide what events should change in the world of pop culture, be it real or ASB (future movie gets shown in the past, an actor does/doesn't die, alternate casting choices, unmade media possibly getting made, media is rewritten, a change in the box office or something new entirely)!
I document what happens in a current timeline of Earth!
We all have fun!
CURRENT TIMELINE:

Wacky shenanigans ensue, including President Reagan trying to build a massive wall on the Southern border to stop Soviet influence, claiming that “both sides have very fine people” in regards to the Civil Rights Movement, and him accidentally starting a cult about how hippies are secretly stooges of a global satanic cult run by the elites.
