I recently adopted two Yorkie mixes, Bonnie & Clyde. I was told they are a bonded pair of litter mates about 2 years old. Bonnie has been showing some aggression lately, mostly resource guarding. I’m wondering if you have any tips for how to correct her when she starts to growl at Clyde or how to redirect her attention. Because Bonnie gets possessive over food, I try to sit or stand between them when they eat, but Clyde gets nervous and won’t eat unless I hand feed him. I don’t want this to be a habit so I’m trying to get away from that. I tried shutting Bonnie in a different room while eating (I live in a studio so not so easy to do) but they were both upset to be separated and neither would eat.
Background: they were with their first family for most of their life (I think) and then they had to move and couldn’t find a pet friendly rental in the school district they needed. So they were surrendered to a small, home-based shelter. There were a lot of dogs there and I think that overwhelmed them both. At one point, there was a dog who had a litter of pups and Bonnie helped take care of them at times (I believe she has also had her own puppies. They are now both spayed/neutered). After the pups were adopted, the mom bit Bonnie and so I think she has a lot of residual fear from that or at least I’m assuming so.
Any tips for helping to ease her aggression and or to help Clyde’s confidence would be greatly appreciated!
