Clothing brand Patagonia seems to be doing everything right: for its employees, for the people who make the clothes and for the environment. The company’s image – they say they’re in business to save our home planet – is very different from fast-fashion brands like asos, Primark and Nike. But Patagonia’s clothes are manufactured in exactly the same factories and under the same deplorable conditions.
When Yvon Chouinard started creating climbing equipment in his parents’ backyard in Burbank, California, he used steel. Soon he earned a reputation for making the ‘best’ climbing equipment in America. But every time a climber slammed one of those steel pegs into a rock, the gap got a little bigger and eventually unusable. Chouinard realised he was making money by destroying the rocks and therefore also the sport. And so he switched to aluminium blocks, which did not damagethe rocks.
The change was expensive and risky for the young company, but the moral dilemma was reason enough for Chouinard to implement the change. And to be very outspoken about it. It was a success: within a year, 40 per cent of the US climbing community stopped using steel.
Chouinard applied this experience when he started the outdoor brand Patagonia in 1973. He wanted to make only high-quality clothing that would last. And limit the impact on the environment as much as possible. In 1996, the brand switched to 100 per cent organic cotton, only to increasingly replace it with recycled materials. But the responsibility that Chouinard attributed to the company extended further.
In 2002 he decided to give one per cent of sales to environmental organisations every year. In 2011, Patagonia placed a full-page ad in the New York Times calling on consumers to ‘not buy this jacket’ in order to draw attention to the problematic nature of overconsumption in the clothing industry.
In addition, the clothing had to be manufactured fairly: in 2012, the top of the company made paying living wages to everyone who makes Patagonia products a ‘priority’. In 2020, Patagonia launched a campaign encouraging consumers to demand more from clothing brands: ‘Demand recycled. Demand organic. Demand Fair Trade,’ Patagonia urged its viewers.
In 2022, the then 84-year-old Chouinard caused worldwide astonishment, when he gave away 98 per cent of his shares to a newly formed NGO, the Holdfast Collective, which is ‘committed in its fight against the environmental crisis and protecting nature.’ Henceforth, the company’s profits would no longer flow to himself or his children but to the climate. ‘Earth is now our only shareholder,’ Chouinard said. Billionaire gives company away to climate, newspapers like The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian reported*.*
This construction saved the NGO an estimated 700 million dollars that Chouinard would have had to pay in tax if he had sold the company and donated the proceeds to the same NGO. But according to Chouinard, this option allowed him to do something else: protect Patagonia’s values. Because he did not give the voting shares to Holdfast Collective but to a family trust. This allows his family to continue determining the company’s direction.
The company’s turnover – its European headquarters are in Amsterdam − grew by more than 50 per cent that year to about 1.5 billion dollars.
The actions earned Patagonia an image as being the ultimate sustainable frontrunner. In April, Time Magazine named Chouinard one of the world’s 100 most influential people. ‘Patagonia is a company people look up to in awe,’ the magazine wrote.
The complete opposite of Patagonia is a company like Primark. The Irish retail chain is known for selling on-trend low-quality clothes at low prices. Its revenue model is based on mass: high volumes with low margins.
Primark continuously creates new garment collections designed to be worn only a few times, after which they fall apart. The company uses advertising, clearance sales and influencers to urge consumers to keep buying as much as possible.
Media regularly report on the subsequent consequences. One, in particular, is that the people who make the clothes suffer from high production pressure at low cost. ‘Primark supplier accused of locking up factory workers in Myanmar protests,’ The Guardian headline read in 2021. That same year, The Clean Clothes Campaign NGO wrote: ‘Primark uses pandemic to put further pressure on factory workers in manufacturing countries.’
Patagonia and Primark seem like two extremes on the slow versus fast-fashion spectrum. Yet the brands have something in common. Some of their clothing is manufactured in the exact same factory.
PATAGONIA IN AMSTERDAM In 2014, Patagonia moved its European headquarters from Annecy town in the French Alps to Amsterdam. Reflecting on this, current CEO Ryan Gellert told the city marketing website I Amsterdam: ‘We established headquarters here in 2014 because we wanted a place where we could attract and retain pan-European and global talent, [...] and where there was an active community working on sustainability issues. As we searched potential locations across Europe, Amsterdam remained high on our list.’
According to Tax Law Professor Jan van de Streek, tax benefits may also have played a role in the choice of the Netherlands. This is because Patagonia did not register in the Netherlands as a BV but as a cooperative with two US members: Patagonia International Inc and Patagonia Global LLC. ‘Why choose something as strange as a cooperative structure?’ Van de Streek remarks to Follow the Money. ‘Because it is exempt from dividend tax. I think it’s naive to think there’s any other reason for that.’
Responding to questions about this, Patagonia said: ‘Since its inception, Patagonia Europe Coöperatief has paid regular corporate income taxes in all European countries where we do business, including the Netherlands, and has never used the tax efficiencies of a cooperative.’
‘At the suggestion of our advisors', Patagonia chose a cooperative structure ‘because it's the most flexible type of entity that suited our business purpose. However, Patagonia has chosen not to pursue any of the tax advantages available under the cooperative entity type. Patagonia Europe has not paid dividends to its parent company.'

‘No difference’

That factory is called Regal Image and is located in Sri Lanka. To be precise, in the Free Trade Zone of Katunayake, less than two kilometres from the international airport. The industrial estate is guarded 24/7 by Sri Lankan police. Access is only possible with a special pass.
In the factory hall, there are long tables with pieces of white fabric on them. An employee walks past with sea-green paint and a stencil forming the letters ‘asics’. Further along, a machine prints a grey logo on a purple tank top for Decathlon.
‘So far, we don’t really notice any difference between working with Patagonia and working with Primark or Decathlon,’ says Kevin Fernando. Fernando is the manager at the factory, which dyes, prints or embroiders logos and prints on fabrics. Regal Image was recently approved as a supplier to Patagonia, a process that took nine months. Fernando shows the designs for the 2024 summer collection. Light blue fabric features ‘Patagonia’ in pink letters, and a rainbow is printed on orange fabric.
‘Like most clothing companies, we do not make our products, nor do we own any of the factories that do,’ Patagonia writes on its website about the decision to outsource the manufacturing process. ‘We design, test, market and sell Patagonia gear. These are our areas of strength. We pay other companies [...] to produce fabrics and do the actual cutting and sewing.’

‘No control over working conditions’

Patagonia promises to only partner with factories that are ‘like-minded’ and who share their ‘philosophy.’ Patagonia has found sixty-one suitable factories: two in the US, one in Portugal and the remainder in 12 different low-wage countries. The bulk of the products are made in Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
At least two-thirds of the factories that manufacture Patagonia clothing also work for clothing brands that, according to the consumer website Good on You, have little or no sustainability policies in place (Patagonia itself is touted by Good on You as sustainable). This is evident from an analysis by Follow the Money based on data from Open Supply Hub, which aims to make supply chains in the clothing industry more transparent.
One day people make clothing for Patagonia, and the next day, they make items for brands such as GAP, Levi Strauss, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Amer Sports, Asics, US department store chain Target, e-commerce platform Amazon, supermarket Aldi and fast-fashion icons ASOS, Boohoo, H&M and Zara.
‘How is this possible?’ visual culture professor Anneke Smelik responds. Smelik researches sustainable fashion at Radboud University. ‘I know Patagonia as the most sustainable brand out there. I expected them to manufacture in small factories close to home. This means they have absolutely no control over working conditions.’
PATAGONIA IN SRI LANKA Patagonia works with 14 factories in Sri Lanka that are part of (or partner with) two companies: MAS Holdings and the Hirdaramani Group.
MAS Holdings was founded in 1987 by three brothers: Mahesh, Ajay and Sharad Amalean. The company began manufacturing lingerie and later expanded to sportswear, swimwear and T-shirts. With factories in 17 countries and roughly 2.4 billion dollars in turnover by 2022, MAS is Sri Lanka’s largest clothing manufacturer. The Amalean brothers are among the wealthiest men in the country.
The company emphatically presents itself as a sustainable clothing manufacturer. For instance, the company promises to emit 25 per cent less CO2 by 2025 than in 2019, and CEO Suren Fernando expects the group to earn half its revenue from sustainable products by then.
In May 2023, MAS received a Presidential Environment Award from President Ranil Wickremesinghe for the company’s commitment to the environment. The company describes the welfare of its employees as ‘its top priority’. On the subject of paying a living wage, the company makes no promises.
In the early 1900s, Parmanand Hirdaramani, then 16 years old, started a clothing shop in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo. Today, his great-grandson Aroon Hirdaramani runs the Hirdaramani Group, which has grown into an international clothing conglomerate with factories in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Vietnam and a turnover of around 900 million US dollars.
Hirdaramani also presents itself as a sustainable producer. The company’s website states: ‘At Hirdaramani, we do the right thing. We have always done that. It’s about making good decisions today that benefit everyone in the long run.’
Since 2019, all Hirdaramani factories in Sri Lanka have been producing climate neutrally. For 2025, the company has set several targets on material use, water use, waste and leadership. Paying a living or higher wage is not a target.
In 2016, Aroon Hirdaramani and his wife Mona surfaced in the Pandora Papers. It emerged that Hirdaramani owned two investment companies in the British Virgin Islands. The reason for this is unclear. The fact is that companies based there do not have to pay tax on income, profits, dividends and interest, among other things.

Sixteen-hour workdays

Eligibility to manufacture Patagonia products requires a supplier to meet a list of sustainability criteria. Those criteria are set out in a code of conduct for suppliers. For example, child labour, forced labour, or physical, sexual or verbal harassment are not allowed. All national laws must be respected. Suppliers must respect workers’ right to freedom of association, may not force workers to work overtime and must ensure healthy working conditions. Working weeks of more than 60 hours or more than six days in a row is not acceptable to Patagonia.
Patagonia checks whether a factory complies with these standards through independent auditor visits at least once a year, says the brand after being questioned by Follow the Money. Checks are also carried out by the Fair Labor Association (FLA) and FairTrade: two NGOs that provide Patagonia’s manufacturing process and clothing with a sustainability label.
A part of those audits is public. Since 2016, the FLA has publishedassessments of seven Patagonia factories, including three in Vietnam, three in Sri Lanka and one in China. During those inspections, auditors found dozens of violations, varying greatly in severity.
For instance, almost 2000 employees at a factory in Vietnam were paid less for their overtime than what they should have received and employees’ ages were not recorded (thus child labour cannot be ruled out). Another check found out that applicants had to provide their menstrual date. Employees told the interviewers they were not allowed to become pregnant in the first six months of their employment. Less serious violations dealt with issues such as working without protective equipment, blocked emergency exits, or a lack of policies on harassment or discrimination.
One problem crops up in every report. Textile workers in factories manufacturing clothes for Patagonia work far longer hours than legally permitted: up to 17 hours a day and more than 80 hours a week, well beyond what is permissible according to Patagonia’s code of conduct.
‘Long working hours with insufficient breaks often lead to health problems,’ the Clean Clothes Campaign recently wrote about this issue. ‘Managers pressure employees to work 10- to 12-hour and sometimes even 16- to 18-hour days. The number of hours increases as the deadline approaches. Those who protest are simply fired. Moreover, workers depend on overtime to supplement their low wages.’
At the Regal Image factory in Sri Lanka, manager Fernando assures that his employees work a maximum of five days a week and 10 hours a day. But during the tour, a line manager starts talking about the duration of his shift: from eight in the morning to a quarter to 10 in the evening – almost 14 hours. ‘It’s busy,’ says Fernando, casually.
‘This is what the fast-fashion model does,’ says Smelik. ‘Brands want their products to be in store within a few weeks. So when a factory receives an order from such a brand, the production targets and overtime skyrocket.’

‘They talk to us like we are animals’

The office of Stand Up Lanka, a union led by Ashila Niroshine Dandeniya, is located just outside the Free-Trade Zone. She started working in a MAS factory, part of MAS Holdings that is a supplier to Patagonia, in 2003. Her colleagues elected her to represent them as a member of the factory’s employees council. But when she addressed the matter of wages, she was fired. She challenged her dismissal, got compensation, and discovered that there were laws in place to protect people like her.
Now, almost 20 years later, she knows Sri Lankan labour law like the back of her hand. Her office is a hexagon with five windows, all open. Textile workers from nearby factories approach her via these windows to greet her or ask for help.
When a transman walks past, she says, ‘He applied to MAS Shadowline [one of Patagonia’s suppliers, ed] a month ago. They said they didn’t want him because he is transgender. He can’t get work anywhere. And he cannot go back to his village because he is Muslim. His family will shoot him.’
When about six women wearing yellow MAS polos come and ask for a food parcel, Dandeniya shakes her head. ‘We don’t have enough. Since the country’s economic crisis, some families barely eat two meals a day. How am I supposed to choose who can eat and who can’t?’
That evening, she introduces Priya (31). Priya has been working for MAS Shadowline for almost two years, sewing the side seams on leggings or T-shirts. She makes many clothes for yoga brand Lululemon and for Lacoste (famous through the crocodile logo), but sometimes also for Patagonia.
‘The worst part is the scolding,’ she says in her home a few streets away: a room of about 12 square metres. It contains a double bed, a small kitchenette and a wardrobe. Despite the fan on the wall, it is sweltering hot inside. She shares a toilet and a shower with others.
‘My supervisor’s manager is a terrible man. He touches everyone in a bad way, and if you say you don’t want that, you have a problem. He yells at me if I have to go to the bank or the doctor. “Then who will do the work? Who will meet the target?” And he’s not the only one. They talk to us like we are animals.’
When asked about her production targets, she breathes a deep sigh. ‘The other day, Lululemon placed a huge order, and now everyone is stressed. On the first day, we had to make seventy items per hour, but on the second day, it was suddenly a hundred. Otherwise, we won’t make the delivery date.’ During the working day, she does not drink water so that she does not waste time going to the toilet. Despite this, she seldom meets the target. And that means: no bonus.
Without that bonus, Priya earns 32,000 rupees a month (97 euros). Her room costs 7,000 rupees (21 euros), and a meal 300 rupees (1 euro). She has no money left for other things.
‘Since the crisis, we are increasingly hearing stories from our members of textile workers using drugs,’ says Dandeniya. ‘Also in MAS factories that Patagonia works with. They use it to work faster. Sometimes also against the hunger.’
Chamila Thushari, union leader of Dabindu Collective, confirms the story. ‘They use Ice (Crystal Meth) or Babul.’ She points to her collar and to the sole of her shoe. ‘This is how they smuggle it in. The management knows this happens but allows it. All they care about is production targets are being met.’
An employee of a third union, GTZ-GSEU, confirms that drug use among textile workers in the Free Trade Zone is a problem.
Patagonia says these claims are ‘new’ to them and ‘serious’, but says, without evidence, it cannot comment.

A living wage

That Patagonia, known for being sustainable, has its clothes manufactured in the same factories as other much less sustainable brands is seen as an advantage by the company. ‘Patagonia has a powerful brand voice, but we are a quite small player in the apparel sector. Therefore, we are always looking for ways to scale our impact and to elevate the industry standards across the board, bringing other apparel retailers along on the journey with us. So, continuing to engage in shared production facilities is crucial to this work.’

In 2015, the company promised that within 10 years, all employees in its supply chain would be earning a living wage that would be enough to live on. That is, enough for food, water, housing, education, healthcare, transport and other essential needs.
With 18 months to go, only 40 per cent of its factories pay a living wage, according to Patagonia. They would not reveal the factories concerned. Suppliers reportedly ‘have the right to maintain their factories’ wage data confidential’.

To determine a living wage, Patagonia uses the Anker Research Institute’s calculation method. According to that method, you can live decently in urban Sri Lanka if you earn a minimum of 83,231 Sri Lankan rupees (263 euro) a month. Priya’s salary does not even cover half that. And at the recently approved Regal Image print factory, the basic wage is even lower: 21,000 rupees (66 euro), says Fernando.
Thulsi Narayanasamy is frustrated by Patagonia’s approach to sustainability. She is director of advocacy at the Worker Rights Consortium, an independent non-profit organization that monitors and investigates labor conditions in the global apparel and textile industry. ‘Patagonia spends millions on green initiatives. Why can’t they pay the people who make their clothes properly?’
Patagonia says it ‘has no authority over how much textile workers get paid, as they are in no way, shape or form the employer of these workers.’ Narayanasamy, however, is convinced Patagonia can pay a living wage, if the brand would want to. ‘They could bring production in-house or pay more to suppliers that’s ringfenced for wages high enough to achieve a living income. It’s so well established that brand’s pricing practices directly impact wage levels, it’s a fallacy to deny this.’
‘I think we should ask ourselves: why don't clothing brands have their own factories?’ She asks the question, then answers it. 'Brands don't want to be responsible for the people who produce their clothes. All brands benefit from that, including Patagonia.
RESPONSE FROM PATAGONIA When asked why it does not pay its suppliers more for decent wages for workers, Patagonia replied: ‘Relying on one brand to simply cover the gap is a band-aid solution and does not serve the factory in the long run. If the one brand that pays the gap were to leave the factory, then those wages for workers would go away, leaving the factory with a shortfall they would not be able to cover. Additionally, if the brand just writes a check to the factory, then there is no guarantee that the money would go towards workers’ wages. The brand has no authority over how much workers get paid as they are in no way, shape or form the employer of those workers.’
About the long working hours, Patagonia says: ‘Excessive overtime is pervasive globally, which is why it is audited regularly. If we find a problem that can be resolved, we work with our factory partners to implement sustainable solutions. This can take many years, but we find this is the best outcome for the workers and the factory.’
In response to the allegations about drug use among textile workers, Patagonia says: ‘These are serious and new allegations, however without evidence, we are not able to comment on them. We are continuing to conduct our ongoing monitoring program and we remain committed to addressing systemic issues to ensure workers’ wellbeing across our supply chain.’

The Background

—I (26M) started talking to Jane (23F) at the start of May. I’ve had some romantic feelings for her since we met, but knowing that in February, Jane had just gotten out of a 3 year abusive relationship involving physical and emotional abuse and manipulation, I decided to keep my feelings to myself and focus on building a platonic relationship with her, as her healing takes priority.

—On top of the abusive relationship, she’s kind-heated and a big people pleaser, so it’s not hard for someone to manipulate her. For example, her roommates owe heher parents around $10K for money they kept borrowing to buy a capay rent/buy a puppy/etc. She’s aware of this, and she’s suspicious of people attempting to manipulate her, rightfully so. Thankfully, she’s moving out and getting her own space which should give her the peace she needs right now.

—I love giving meaningful and useful gifts, so for her birthday I gave her a lapis lazuli pendant. She’s very into healing crystals, and after researching, I got her lapis lazuli as they say it helps with wisdom, healing and enhanced communication, hoping it help her focus on recovering from her abusive toxic relationship. I explained the meaning behind it when I gave her on her birthday and she’s cherished it, adding it to the necklace she wears daily, and it made me so happy to see it on her everyday.

-I also love helping/problem solving for people. I’m the type of person who would drop whatever I’m doing if you ask me for help, even for complete strangers and especially for those I care about. People have used this to their advantage before and have taken me for granted, to the point where I’ve spent an entire weekend helping someone with a project, only to blocked right after the project was done. So I’ve become more wary/suspicious/protective of my time, because obviously going out of my way to help someone and them not even appreciating it hurts me emotionally.
—We’re both on the spectrum and have trouble conveying/interpreting emotions/tone/intent especially over text

The Situation

My friend told me she was moving out of her unhealthy living situation and had a lot of stuff to get done, so I of course offered to help her pack/move on Wed May 31st, and we made a plan the night before (Tues May 30th) that she would pack what she could during the day and I’d come over after work with additional boxes/tape/etc and we’d finish up all the packing, and after, I’d help her with some documents (lease takeoveroommate’s loan payment plan). On Wed, we only messaged twice during the workday, usually we’d message much more frequently, which I took as a good sign that she way busy packing. Around 7, I left to go Walmart to pick up boxes and tape, and at 7:25 I called her, via snapchat audio, to let her know I was on my way. She didn’t pick up, so I tried her phone and also FaceTime Audio. Both went to voicemail, so I sent a text instead, also asking if she needed anything else (food/coffee/etc) and asking her to give me a call back in case I don’t see her message while driving. I depart Walmart, and begin the 30 minute drive to her place, driving a bit faster than normal because Walmart took longer than expect and I felt bad for being late to help her. Here’s what happened:

07:42PM I’m like halfway to you

She responds 10 mins into the drive, saying she already has enough boxes and that she’s getting ready to leave. I’m amazed she’s done, and given she said she was leaving when she knew I was coming, wasn’t sure what the implication was. Were we meeting to do the documents at her parents or getting food and doing them there or were we meeting at my place? Should I keep driving to her or turn around and go somewhere else? I’d been hearing about the roommate drama all week so I would’ve preferred not arriving and getting mixed up if that was possible. But I wasn’t sure, so I figured I’d just keep going just in case. I couldn’t type all that so I asked again for her to call me, reiterating that i’m on my way, thinking that would communicate the call was time sensitive.

07:44PM Shit yea I’m sorry I totally didn’t open your snap until now

Me:
07:45PM Can you call me…

Jane:
07:45PM We are watching a movie but yea I could go upstairs
07:46PM I appreciate you having those boxes for me but I’m pretty much packed

She responds a couple minutes later, telling me she didn’t open my snap until now, and doesn’t answer either of the questions nor do I get a call. I’m almost in her neighborhood at this point, so I try calling again, but goes to voicemail after a ring or two. I really don’t want to show up there if she’s already left. So I send a text, asking again for her to call me. She responds immediately saying they’re watching a movie but she could go upstairs. I’m a bit confused, but wait, giving her time to go upstairs and call me.

07:50PM I’m just gonna turn around then

Jane:
07:51PM My phones on silent 😂 and I didn’t know why you were calling?

Me:
07:52PM Because i’m driving 80 on the highway and shouldn’t be texting lol

Another few minutes have passed, and by this time I’ve arrived and parked around the corner from her house. Confused as to why its taking so long for her to go upstairs, I call again and no answer. So I send her a text, asking if she doesn’t see any of the 6 missed snapchat, FaceTime audio and phone calls. I call again, and no answer. I’m a planner, I like making detailed plans and following through on them. I’m okay with plans changing, as long as those changes are made clear and not left ambiguous. So, given that I don’t know what’s going on, I don’t know what the new plan is and I’ve asked multiple times for her to call me so I can find out what’s going on and what the new plan is, I’m now frustrated and realized I just drove 30 minutes all the way here for nothing so I text saying I’m just going to go turn around.

She responds immediately saying her phone was on silent but also simultaneously knowing I was calling, but didn’t know WHY I was calling. This frustrates me even more given that I had repeatedly said I was currently driving over to her house and repeatedly asked if I should be turning around and repeatedly asked her to call back. Not to mention, the easiest way to find out WHY someone is calling is to answer the call or call them back. But I hold my frustration and explain that I was calling because I driving and couldn’t have a text conversation.

A few minutes go by, and I text again, asking what the new plan is. She immediately replies, saying she forgot the part of the plan after the packing. And at that point, I deduce that she’s hinting I shouldn’t come to her place and I just leave.

Obviously I’m frustrated, and the whole ride home I’m trying to clear my head and wondering if I should express my frustration. The whole week, she’s had new drama with her toxic roommates and patronizing mother, so just I keep telling myself “she’s going through a rough time, just brush it off”. But also, if someone were going out of their way to come help me pack etc, and I finished packing early, I would’ve told them as soon as I’m done that they don’t need to make the 30 minute drive over. That’s just considerate.

08:50PM Last night we talked and the plan was that after work i’d bring over boxes and help you finish packing and do the documents if we had time. So if the plan changes, like you finish before I get off or that you no longer need boxes, can you please communicate that to me beforehand?

Because I feel really stupid rn since I spent 45 minutes going to Walmart to get boxes/tape/etc and driving all the way to you, just to find out you didn’t need any more boxes and that you already finished packing. It’s kinda inconsiderate and makes me feel unappreciated.

I know she’s had a rough week, but I also rescheduled plans I had that evening so I could go help her, only to be ignored when I’m literally on my way and finding out all my effort was meaningless. Yes she has a lot on her plate, but I wouldn’t do that to someone and I expect that not to be done to me. So after getting home, before I even get out the car, I text saying i’m frustrated. And I take 10 minutes crafting a text (we’re both on the spectrum and aren’t the most tactful at expressing/interpreting through text) why i’m frustrated, how what she did was inconsiderate, how it made me feel unappreciated and what we can do in the future to avoid that happening again (assuming she cares that she was inconsiderate and unintentionally made me feel unappreciated). After writing, rewriting and rewording trying to make sure it’s clear i’m not blaming her and just respectfully discussing a boundary that was crossed, I send the message 10 minutes before 9pm.

It really wasn’t a big deal, and I didn’t expect a 10 page apology letter. Just something like “Apologies for not being considerate of your time and thanks for understanding that I’m just stressed right now. I’ll be sure to update you if our plans change like that again.” And we’d move on. No big deal.

Rather, I wanted to express how what you did made me feel. I know that it wasn’t intentional, and it just slipped your mind, which is why I’m not at all mad about it. We’re human and it happens, especially given that you have a lot on your plate rn. But at the same time, I needed to address it so it doesn’t happen again in the future

But after a few hours, I didn’t hear back from her. And got worried I messed up the wording of my text and accidentally gave off a patronizing tone or the idea that I was talking down to her. And just after midnight, I I send a message hoping to clarify the intent of the message. Expecting that to clear up any misunderstandings, I go to sleep expecting her to reply like she usually does before work in the morning.

However, in the morning there’s still no response. We were supposed to go to the gym, go to a sushi restaurant for dinner and go see a standup show that night. So I send her a snapchat, asking if our plans were still on tonight.

After a week past the situation I wasn’t sure what was going on. I thought she would’ve at least sent a quick message last Friday saying she had received the bouquet, but nothing. So worried that she was just gonna ghost me, I reached out the next Wednesday June 7, hoping we could just talk in person and clear up whatever the issue was.

And as of today, Sat June 10, when I’m writing this, no response. She’s viewed the stories I’ve posted all week, and she’s been actively posting as well all week, but nothing to me. So I’ve been slowly coming to terms that our friendship might be over. That or she just really needs more time to process whatever she’s processing. But last night she posted a picture with her necklace in frame. The lapis lazuli pendant she had worn everyday since I gave it to her was no longer there. She’s not waiting to talk to me, but rather she’s probably not going to talk to me ever again. It seems our friendship has ended. And it seems like I’m the bad guy she removed from her life.


The Questions

Am I the asshole/dumbass for being frustrated/expressing it?

I feel like she would be understanding about expressing my feelings, and wouldn’t want me to feel unappreciated unintentionally. And I thought I was communicating my feelings in a healthy way, but I can see that something I said or the way I said it really upset her or possibly triggered some trauma from her abusive ex, and that definitely wasn’t my intention and is the absolute last thing I’d want to do because I care about her so so much and just want to see her happy, but somehow made her so upset that she refuses to talk with me and has gotten rid of something she treasures because I was the one who gave it to her. It feels like I’m in the wrong here, like I’m the asshole but I don’t see how?

AITA for expressing my feelings in a healthy way and setting boundaries for myself so my willingness to go out of my way to help is not taken advantage of?
AITA for not bottling my emotions when my friend was having a rough time and needed someone to stay supportive?
If expressing my feelings was right, AITA for the way I expressed it? Did I come off as demanding/manipulative/abusive/patronizing?

Hi all. I live in England.
I am currently having a dispute with Evans Cycles and I'm in need of help of what my rights are in regards to the above and what action I can take.
I bought a bike from them back in August last year (2022) for work, and in December (03/12/22) the pedal fell off whilst I was on it. I contacted the store to ask for a repair on the same day, and brought it in shortly after that.
Several weeks passed with no contact from the store and I rang and visited the store to enquire about the repair, being advised that they were waiting on a part. I gave the employee at the store my telephone number, asking to be kept updated on what was going on, even if it was just waiting for the part still.
I rang again on 25/04 to enquire about getting a refund as I was not happy with the service provided and that I had to buy another bike as the wait was too long and needed one to commute to work. Was advised to call back later on the week as the manager was not on duty. I called back on 29/04, spoke to the manager who advised that I would need to call head office as they deal with the complaints and refunds.
I spoke to an employee at head office, who advised they would speak to the warranty team to organise a refund as I had specifically stated that I did not want the bike back as I had purchased a new one. I never received an email following this up.
I then received a call on 03/05 to say the bike had been fixed and was ready for collection, which was against my wishes made clear in the call to head office.
On 04/05/23 11:40 I called head office to make a complaint, and spoke to a customer service person who was very helpful, and verbally confirmed my email with her, who stated an email would be sent to me straight away. At 13:07 I still hadn't received the email, so called again, to find out that my email address had been repeatedly taken down incorrectly, so had not had any emails including my original order confirmation from Aug 22.
Following on from this I've gone through a over month long email chain with multiple different people at their head office, which eventually resulted in them refusing the refund because the work had been done (after I'd requested I didn't want the bike anymore) and that I have bought a different bike (not from them). They then had the cheek to offer me a £25 in store voucher as an apology for any inconvenience caused.
The impact this had is I've had to spend quite a lot of money on taxi fees and getting help from my parents to get lifts to work as I'm not capable of walking that far due to a long term knee injury.
I currently have the call recordings of my calls to head office and have asked for an address for who to send a notice of claim to 2 times since 30/05/23 and once again today, with no answer.
TL:DR - currently in a dispute with a bike company because they won't give me a refund for a bike I no longer wanted due to the time taken to repair it.

A little background about myself. I’m 31 years old. I grew up in India, moved to USA 10 years ago. From childhood, I’m always dreaming in class (Except in mathematics), never read more than 2 pages in a book, never paid attention in class. Always waited until the last minute to do any assignment or work and struggled a lot by doing that but somehow I managed to score good marks.
I cannot multi task, cannot wake up in the morning, forget items in grocery list if it has more than 3, forget things to do within minutes, cannot pay attention to anything more than 2 minutes.
I think it got even worse in last 2 years. I had a bad breakup in 2021 and after that i lost interest in most the things. Even at work, i lost complete interest to learn new things and improve myself. I’m in a complete survival mode.
When I mentioned all this to my friends, they told me about ADHD and that is the 1st time i ever heard about it. When I googled the symptoms, i felt really scared.
Back in India (atleast in the region I grew up), there was no concept of ADHD. If anyone is not doing well in academics, they will be subjected to severe punishments and I received a ton of it. It was fear of punishment that pushed me in school. If a kid is still not doing good, he is just labeled as dumb. But no one ever talked about ADHD.
I want to get treatment for it. Where do i start ? I’m really scared, Is there any hope for me ? Do people actually get diagnosed after 30 and get better ?

Hello all!
I'm pretty new to Unity, even if I'm using C# everyday at work. So I'm in desesperate need of help concerning UI Toolkit, and specifically dynamic list of focusable element.
Issue:
I'm working on a turn based RPG battle gameplay; I set up a menu when battle start, sending events to a BattleController (MonoBehaviour) to separate Ui from Logic. That root menu have 5 buttons: Move, Attack, Skills, Items and Defend.
Move, Attack & Defend's selection & logic are ok, as there's no dynamic data to display.
Yet, I can't seem to make the skill list work, as it depends on the current character's list of skills.
What I have:
A Ui Document with different panel for each submenu, controlled by a MenuController: I switch panel on submit on the selected button. Here are a few methods & class I think are relevant:
A BattleMenuController that controls the UI and gets the inputs. (Some methods as that class is huge).
InitialiseButtons() is called when I switch current selected panel to get the buttons in each list.
SwitchControlledMenu is called when I submit on one of those buttons.

What I've tried to debug:
For now, it seems that in InitialiseButtons() method, no children are found when I'm in the Skill panel, yet they are displayed with the correct names. Ugly screen shot incoming :

In the console its seems that InitialiseButtons is called before pushing them in the panel. But I (think I) invoke the event InitialiseButtons after they are set up in the code. (See code above at the end of BattleSkillMenuController). I tried to move the invoke at different locations, no success.
EDIT: Doesn't seem like initialisation order issue; even forcing to InitialiseButtons() on each navigation input get 0 elements. List isn't visually empty, but has no children in code...
Is my approach wrong? I'm not against rebuilding the whole logic if I'm in the wrong. But UI Toolkit is quitte a pain to debug.
No luck on google either, so, please help me with your magic reddit!

tl;dr: /loadingartist will be joining in on the June 12th-14th protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps.
I know we're just a relatively small subreddit here, but hey the more the merrier right? These greedy/sudden API changes by reddit are forcing all 3rd party apps to shut down (like Apollo, which I personally use and love), and I just find the way reddit are going about it (while also blatantly lying) really quite scummy.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

I want to to emphasize that this will personally affect me quite a lot. I do the majority of my moderation - and by extension the majority of moderation on this subreddit - via Sync for Reddit. Sync for Reddit has already announced it will be shutting down on June 30 2023. I will have to find alternative ways to moderate this subreddit, or the quality may decrease.

  • Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

When training ChatGPT on local data, I'm told to set the data up under one directory. Will the process of going through the data recurse through the subdirectories? And if so, how can I place more emphasis on certain data (my program .py files) over other data (the downloaded Python docs)?
I know this is addressed in various documentations, but I am having problems with interpretation and need some more specific guidance. I am experimenting with setting up a system that will help me develop new code that makes use of my current code as a template for building new files. I would like to be able to do something like "using ... as a template, give me a class that will ....".

Background

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced new pricing for API usage in third-party apps.
Starting July 1, third-party app developers will have to pay an exorbitant amount of money once they exceed the usage limits of the free tier. One figure cited was $12,000 per 50 million API requests, which is significantly higher than the $166 per 50 million API calls Imgur is charging (Christian Selig, lead developer of Apollo). This is a quick turnaround that caught developers off-guard.
Adding insult to injury, Reddit leadership has responded in a way that is tone deaf and dishonest at best, and slanderous at worst, to fellow app developers (see "Bizarre allegations"). This includes the recent AMA that took place.
As a result, popular third-party apps, such as Reddit Is Fun and Apollo, are planning to shut down on June 30.
Multiple contest mode polls on /mashups have shown that a sizable number of users are on mobile, with Reddit Is Fun and Apollo being the most popular third-party apps. Both are targeted by the policy.
Based on /SaveThirdPartyApps's pinned post, killing third-party apps will have several negative consequences:
/Modcoord also listed the three areas that need to be addressed for the blackouts to conclude: API technical issues, accessibility for blind people, and parity in access to NSFW content.
With all this in mind, several subreddits will be going dark on June 12 to protest the API policy.

/mashups community decision

The /mashups community ran a contest mode vote over a 48 hour period from June 6-8 to determine how we will respond on June 12. The results* were:
Based on the results, the /mashups community overwhelmingly chose to go dark indefinitely starting on June 12. In the event an admin or mod wants to cast doubt, we have receipts.
If you've read other subreddits shamelessly copying the /SaveThirdPartyApps post verbatim in their statement to go dark, you would have already known most of this.
I write separately to discuss the cultural impact of mashups and how this protest is woven into that fabric.

Cultural impact in the past

I think a discussion of cultural impact starts with a simple question: When you think of mashups, what crosses your mind?
One might see it at a basic level as simply a vocal over a different instrumental. Another might see it as two well-known songs mixed together. Many of our users might think of it as a fusion of several different sources together with transitions in between (Girl Talk). Others might have experienced it during the early 2000s in the form of bastard pop. There are also others who may have heard complex sampling that's so well-made that they don't know they're hearing mashups (Pretty Lights, Fatboy Slim, Coldcut, The Avalanches, etc.). Some even look at it as a commentary on culture (Negativland, Evolution Control Committee). Regardless of how you first experienced it, mashups evoke a certain excitement when sources you know fit like a glove to the point that it sounds like quality art.
In the early 2000s, there was no YouTube and no social media the same way there is today. There were peer to peer file sharing services (Morpheus, Kazaa, LimeWire, etc.) and forums (Gybo). Computers were getting to the point where they were powerful enough for remixing to be affordable to the average consumer.
This meant that mashups were more underground, and gradually came to the surface through word-of-mouth circulation and bootleg releases. Some were mainstream, to include Can't Get Blue Monday Outta My Head (Kurtis Rush).
Back in August 2002, Salon.com published an article that termed this phenomenon as "bootleg culture". This article can also be accessed as of this writing. At that time, 2ManyDJs tried to get their work cleared by labels and failed. Eventually, their work circulated over the Internet and became mashup classics. The article points out Smells Like Booty by 2ManyDJs, Stroke Of Genie-us by Freelance Hellraiser, and George Gets His Freak On by Kurtis Rush, which are all all-timers. This playlist on RateYourMusic lists more mashups from that time and earlier.
Later in the article, Salon calls out mashups as a form of cultural commentary back in the late 80s/early 90s:
Mash-ups were typically created as statements about pop culture and the media juggernaut that surrounds us, not as fodder for the dance floor.
It also calls out mashups in the early 2000s as a "subcultural movement that has threatened the status quo". To put it another way, bootlegs and mashups took on a form of cultural resistance in getting to a point where more and more producers could make mixes that could circulate like popular art outside the labels.
Bootie Mashup was founded in San Francisco in 2003 to become the first and biggest mashup party worldwide. It's about to turn 20 years old. I don't remember if "we ruin your favorite song" was a slogan directly tied to Bootie, but I know it was worn as a badge of honor.
The Grey Album would soon follow in continuing this cultural movement in 2004, and then Girl Talk in 2006. At the same time, the popularity of mashups led to a mainstream mashup album in 2004 in the form of Collision Course.

Cultural impact today

At this point, you're probably asking why I mention all of this.
Today's mashups are more mainstream with social media, as well as both audio and video sharing services. There is an expectation of high quality with recognizable sources.
However, there is still a subtle element of cultural resistance in poking fun of pop music and how much the music industry (and others) lean on nostalgia to create hits. Flowers is a modern clone of I Will Survive. Blinding Lights leans on 80s production and rhythms (some comparing it to Take On Me). Good 4 U is similar to Misery Business. Sweetest Pie lifts the progression from Between The Sheets. Break My Soul is inspired by 90s dance. And so on.
As for mashups, the Four Chord Song and Pachelbel Rant both immediately come to mind as classics in poking fun of similar chord progressions in pop.
Influences are everywhere, and Reddit too, in their song and dance, seems to be channeling Twitter's progression with their latest move to charge an exorbitant amount for their API. Even the AMA responses have a similar tone. Capitalist tendencies won't die as long as there are investors to feed them. And when one company makes a move to see how much they can get away with, others emulate. Just look at when the headphone jack was removed from smartphones, starting with Apple. For these companies, YOLO would not stand for You Only Live Once, but You Obviously Lack Originality.
This protest of Reddit channels the same kind of energy that mashup creators had in poking fun of pop culture and threatening the status quo by creating something different than what the music industry was creating. The genre clashes we create are a part of this movement. Mashups are a part of cultural resistance. And we, as a community, are ready to take this on.
So go ahead, sing the lyrics of your favorite mashups from the rooftops. Let's sign the Four Chord Song. Pachebel's Rant. Boulevard of Broken Songs. Even the chorus lyrics from Call Me A Hole would work nicely as a message towards Reddit leadership. The control they want to impose is too much.
And once we're done partying, and June 12 approaches, the lights fade to black and we continue to sing as we walk out. /mashups will go dark. Reddit had their chance to keep many of us as users, and now they failed us.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
