Monetization sum-up

2023.06.10 13:03 Pylton Monetization sum-up

I want to preface this, to say that this is sourced for the Blue Protocol dev stream itself and the translation that is available today (from youtuber, communities etc). I understand that some people will refuse to acknowledge it, but it's based on fact and not made up by me.
  1. Battle pass
    • Free one giving you Battle imagine Alpha (lvl 40 with less stats)
    • Paid one giving you access to some boost items + Battle imagine Beta (lvl 50 with higher stats than the free one)
    • Royal one: extra items + rank boost
  2. Gacha system
    • Banner system for mounts and for skins
    • Pulls rate unknown
    • Unique gift (emote/wings etc) each 10 pulls
    • Duplicate cannot be sold, but send to another account, send to a friend or exchange it for BPP point
    • 1 Pull is 50 orbs, 11 for 500 (~30 USD the 520 orb pack, to compare 10 pulls in Genshin is around 20 USD)
  3. BPP store
    • List of items can be exchanged for BPP points
    • BPP point can be earned by participating to the gacha, progressing battle pass, but it's unknown if those could be obtainable by playing the game and for free
    • You can purchase Battle imagine too
  4. Orb systems
    • Free ones that could be obtainable by playing but the use would be limited as any other gacha game
    • Paid ones that you could purchase, for a rate of 520 orbs for 4000 yens, equivalent of 30 USD.
    • Expiring: more likely only in JP due to law about taxing digital currencies.
  5. Consumable shop
    • Skins (ugly ones for 30$)
    • Potion, stamina, and other bonuses potions
    • Extra Reward tickets (limited to 3 for a day/week? unknown...)
    • Plugs increase chance tickets (to get better affix)
    • Plugs removal tickets (to transfer your plugs with the affix to the new weapon)
    • Immediate deliverable quest ticket?!
I feel like people are focusing too much on the gacha, but there are many aspects it's P2W. The battle pass is P2W because of the different battle imagine you can obtain with different state.
Also I am not sure if F2P will be able to get free Plugs tickets through the battle pass, I feel like it will not be possible for them, making this even more P2W. But we will have the answer at the release with the full battle pass plan to compare.

2023.06.10 12:28 TinyFlan4013 "Sustainable clothing brand Patagonia manufactures in the same factories as fast-fashion; textile workers are being exploited"

The Dutch independent investigative journalism platform 'Follow the Money' wrote a article about Patagonia.
"Sustainable clothing brand Patagonia manufactures in the same factories as fast-fashion; textile workers are being exploited"
Clothing brand Patagonia seems to be doing everything right: for its employees, for the people who make the clothes and for the environment. The company’s image – they say they’re in business to save our home planet – is very different from fast-fashion brands like asos, Primark and Nike. But Patagonia’s clothes are manufactured in exactly the same factories and under the same deplorable conditions.
When Yvon Chouinard started creating climbing equipment in his parents’ backyard in Burbank, California, he used steel. Soon he earned a reputation for making the ‘best’ climbing equipment in America. But every time a climber slammed one of those steel pegs into a rock, the gap got a little bigger and eventually unusable. Chouinard realised he was making money by destroying the rocks and therefore also the sport. And so he switched to aluminium blocks, which did not damagethe rocks.
The change was expensive and risky for the young company, but the moral dilemma was reason enough for Chouinard to implement the change. And to be very outspoken about it. It was a success: within a year, 40 per cent of the US climbing community stopped using steel.
Chouinard applied this experience when he started the outdoor brand Patagonia in 1973. He wanted to make only high-quality clothing that would last. And limit the impact on the environment as much as possible. In 1996, the brand switched to 100 per cent organic cotton, only to increasingly replace it with recycled materials. But the responsibility that Chouinard attributed to the company extended further.
In 2002 he decided to give one per cent of sales to environmental organisations every year. In 2011, Patagonia placed a full-page ad in the New York Times calling on consumers to ‘not buy this jacket’ in order to draw attention to the problematic nature of overconsumption in the clothing industry.
In addition, the clothing had to be manufactured fairly: in 2012, the top of the company made paying living wages to everyone who makes Patagonia products a ‘priority’. In 2020, Patagonia launched a campaign encouraging consumers to demand more from clothing brands: ‘Demand recycled. Demand organic. Demand Fair Trade,’ Patagonia urged its viewers.
In 2022, the then 84-year-old Chouinard caused worldwide astonishment, when he gave away 98 per cent of his shares to a newly formed NGO, the Holdfast Collective, which is ‘committed in its fight against the environmental crisis and protecting nature.’ Henceforth, the company’s profits would no longer flow to himself or his children but to the climate. ‘Earth is now our only shareholder,’ Chouinard said. Billionaire gives company away to climate, newspapers like The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian reported*.*
This construction saved the NGO an estimated 700 million dollars that Chouinard would have had to pay in tax if he had sold the company and donated the proceeds to the same NGO. But according to Chouinard, this option allowed him to do something else: protect Patagonia’s values. Because he did not give the voting shares to Holdfast Collective but to a family trust. This allows his family to continue determining the company’s direction.
The company’s turnover – its European headquarters are in Amsterdam − grew by more than 50 per cent that year to about 1.5 billion dollars.
The actions earned Patagonia an image as being the ultimate sustainable frontrunner. In April, Time Magazine named Chouinard one of the world’s 100 most influential people. ‘Patagonia is a company people look up to in awe,’ the magazine wrote.
The complete opposite of Patagonia is a company like Primark. The Irish retail chain is known for selling on-trend low-quality clothes at low prices. Its revenue model is based on mass: high volumes with low margins.
Primark continuously creates new garment collections designed to be worn only a few times, after which they fall apart. The company uses advertising, clearance sales and influencers to urge consumers to keep buying as much as possible.
Media regularly report on the subsequent consequences. One, in particular, is that the people who make the clothes suffer from high production pressure at low cost. ‘Primark supplier accused of locking up factory workers in Myanmar protests,’ The Guardian headline read in 2021. That same year, The Clean Clothes Campaign NGO wrote: ‘Primark uses pandemic to put further pressure on factory workers in manufacturing countries.’
Patagonia and Primark seem like two extremes on the slow versus fast-fashion spectrum. Yet the brands have something in common. Some of their clothing is manufactured in the exact same factory.
PATAGONIA IN AMSTERDAM In 2014, Patagonia moved its European headquarters from Annecy town in the French Alps to Amsterdam. Reflecting on this, current CEO Ryan Gellert told the city marketing website I Amsterdam: ‘We established headquarters here in 2014 because we wanted a place where we could attract and retain pan-European and global talent, [...] and where there was an active community working on sustainability issues. As we searched potential locations across Europe, Amsterdam remained high on our list.’
According to Tax Law Professor Jan van de Streek, tax benefits may also have played a role in the choice of the Netherlands. This is because Patagonia did not register in the Netherlands as a BV but as a cooperative with two US members: Patagonia International Inc and Patagonia Global LLC. ‘Why choose something as strange as a cooperative structure?’ Van de Streek remarks to Follow the Money. ‘Because it is exempt from dividend tax. I think it’s naive to think there’s any other reason for that.’
Responding to questions about this, Patagonia said: ‘Since its inception, Patagonia Europe Coöperatief has paid regular corporate income taxes in all European countries where we do business, including the Netherlands, and has never used the tax efficiencies of a cooperative.’
‘At the suggestion of our advisors', Patagonia chose a cooperative structure ‘because it's the most flexible type of entity that suited our business purpose. However, Patagonia has chosen not to pursue any of the tax advantages available under the cooperative entity type. Patagonia Europe has not paid dividends to its parent company.'

‘No difference’

That factory is called Regal Image and is located in Sri Lanka. To be precise, in the Free Trade Zone of Katunayake, less than two kilometres from the international airport. The industrial estate is guarded 24/7 by Sri Lankan police. Access is only possible with a special pass.
In the factory hall, there are long tables with pieces of white fabric on them. An employee walks past with sea-green paint and a stencil forming the letters ‘asics’. Further along, a machine prints a grey logo on a purple tank top for Decathlon.
‘So far, we don’t really notice any difference between working with Patagonia and working with Primark or Decathlon,’ says Kevin Fernando. Fernando is the manager at the factory, which dyes, prints or embroiders logos and prints on fabrics. Regal Image was recently approved as a supplier to Patagonia, a process that took nine months. Fernando shows the designs for the 2024 summer collection. Light blue fabric features ‘Patagonia’ in pink letters, and a rainbow is printed on orange fabric.
‘Like most clothing companies, we do not make our products, nor do we own any of the factories that do,’ Patagonia writes on its website about the decision to outsource the manufacturing process. ‘We design, test, market and sell Patagonia gear. These are our areas of strength. We pay other companies [...] to produce fabrics and do the actual cutting and sewing.’

‘No control over working conditions’

Patagonia promises to only partner with factories that are ‘like-minded’ and who share their ‘philosophy.’ Patagonia has found sixty-one suitable factories: two in the US, one in Portugal and the remainder in 12 different low-wage countries. The bulk of the products are made in Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
At least two-thirds of the factories that manufacture Patagonia clothing also work for clothing brands that, according to the consumer website Good on You, have little or no sustainability policies in place (Patagonia itself is touted by Good on You as sustainable). This is evident from an analysis by Follow the Money based on data from Open Supply Hub, which aims to make supply chains in the clothing industry more transparent.
One day people make clothing for Patagonia, and the next day, they make items for brands such as GAP, Levi Strauss, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Amer Sports, Asics, US department store chain Target, e-commerce platform Amazon, supermarket Aldi and fast-fashion icons ASOS, Boohoo, H&M and Zara.
‘How is this possible?’ visual culture professor Anneke Smelik responds. Smelik researches sustainable fashion at Radboud University. ‘I know Patagonia as the most sustainable brand out there. I expected them to manufacture in small factories close to home. This means they have absolutely no control over working conditions.’
PATAGONIA IN SRI LANKA Patagonia works with 14 factories in Sri Lanka that are part of (or partner with) two companies: MAS Holdings and the Hirdaramani Group.
MAS Holdings was founded in 1987 by three brothers: Mahesh, Ajay and Sharad Amalean. The company began manufacturing lingerie and later expanded to sportswear, swimwear and T-shirts. With factories in 17 countries and roughly 2.4 billion dollars in turnover by 2022, MAS is Sri Lanka’s largest clothing manufacturer. The Amalean brothers are among the wealthiest men in the country.
The company emphatically presents itself as a sustainable clothing manufacturer. For instance, the company promises to emit 25 per cent less CO2 by 2025 than in 2019, and CEO Suren Fernando expects the group to earn half its revenue from sustainable products by then.
In May 2023, MAS received a Presidential Environment Award from President Ranil Wickremesinghe for the company’s commitment to the environment. The company describes the welfare of its employees as ‘its top priority’. On the subject of paying a living wage, the company makes no promises.
In the early 1900s, Parmanand Hirdaramani, then 16 years old, started a clothing shop in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo. Today, his great-grandson Aroon Hirdaramani runs the Hirdaramani Group, which has grown into an international clothing conglomerate with factories in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Vietnam and a turnover of around 900 million US dollars.
Hirdaramani also presents itself as a sustainable producer. The company’s website states: ‘At Hirdaramani, we do the right thing. We have always done that. It’s about making good decisions today that benefit everyone in the long run.’
Since 2019, all Hirdaramani factories in Sri Lanka have been producing climate neutrally. For 2025, the company has set several targets on material use, water use, waste and leadership. Paying a living or higher wage is not a target.
In 2016, Aroon Hirdaramani and his wife Mona surfaced in the Pandora Papers. It emerged that Hirdaramani owned two investment companies in the British Virgin Islands. The reason for this is unclear. The fact is that companies based there do not have to pay tax on income, profits, dividends and interest, among other things.

Sixteen-hour workdays

Eligibility to manufacture Patagonia products requires a supplier to meet a list of sustainability criteria. Those criteria are set out in a code of conduct for suppliers. For example, child labour, forced labour, or physical, sexual or verbal harassment are not allowed. All national laws must be respected. Suppliers must respect workers’ right to freedom of association, may not force workers to work overtime and must ensure healthy working conditions. Working weeks of more than 60 hours or more than six days in a row is not acceptable to Patagonia.
Patagonia checks whether a factory complies with these standards through independent auditor visits at least once a year, says the brand after being questioned by Follow the Money. Checks are also carried out by the Fair Labor Association (FLA) and FairTrade: two NGOs that provide Patagonia’s manufacturing process and clothing with a sustainability label.
A part of those audits is public. Since 2016, the FLA has publishedassessments of seven Patagonia factories, including three in Vietnam, three in Sri Lanka and one in China. During those inspections, auditors found dozens of violations, varying greatly in severity.
For instance, almost 2000 employees at a factory in Vietnam were paid less for their overtime than what they should have received and employees’ ages were not recorded (thus child labour cannot be ruled out). Another check found out that applicants had to provide their menstrual date. Employees told the interviewers they were not allowed to become pregnant in the first six months of their employment. Less serious violations dealt with issues such as working without protective equipment, blocked emergency exits, or a lack of policies on harassment or discrimination.
One problem crops up in every report. Textile workers in factories manufacturing clothes for Patagonia work far longer hours than legally permitted: up to 17 hours a day and more than 80 hours a week, well beyond what is permissible according to Patagonia’s code of conduct.
‘Long working hours with insufficient breaks often lead to health problems,’ the Clean Clothes Campaign recently wrote about this issue. ‘Managers pressure employees to work 10- to 12-hour and sometimes even 16- to 18-hour days. The number of hours increases as the deadline approaches. Those who protest are simply fired. Moreover, workers depend on overtime to supplement their low wages.’
At the Regal Image factory in Sri Lanka, manager Fernando assures that his employees work a maximum of five days a week and 10 hours a day. But during the tour, a line manager starts talking about the duration of his shift: from eight in the morning to a quarter to 10 in the evening – almost 14 hours. ‘It’s busy,’ says Fernando, casually.
‘This is what the fast-fashion model does,’ says Smelik. ‘Brands want their products to be in store within a few weeks. So when a factory receives an order from such a brand, the production targets and overtime skyrocket.’

‘They talk to us like we are animals’

The office of Stand Up Lanka, a union led by Ashila Niroshine Dandeniya, is located just outside the Free-Trade Zone. She started working in a MAS factory, part of MAS Holdings that is a supplier to Patagonia, in 2003. Her colleagues elected her to represent them as a member of the factory’s employees council. But when she addressed the matter of wages, she was fired. She challenged her dismissal, got compensation, and discovered that there were laws in place to protect people like her.
Now, almost 20 years later, she knows Sri Lankan labour law like the back of her hand. Her office is a hexagon with five windows, all open. Textile workers from nearby factories approach her via these windows to greet her or ask for help.
When a transman walks past, she says, ‘He applied to MAS Shadowline [one of Patagonia’s suppliers, ed] a month ago. They said they didn’t want him because he is transgender. He can’t get work anywhere. And he cannot go back to his village because he is Muslim. His family will shoot him.’
When about six women wearing yellow MAS polos come and ask for a food parcel, Dandeniya shakes her head. ‘We don’t have enough. Since the country’s economic crisis, some families barely eat two meals a day. How am I supposed to choose who can eat and who can’t?’
That evening, she introduces Priya (31). Priya has been working for MAS Shadowline for almost two years, sewing the side seams on leggings or T-shirts. She makes many clothes for yoga brand Lululemon and for Lacoste (famous through the crocodile logo), but sometimes also for Patagonia.
‘The worst part is the scolding,’ she says in her home a few streets away: a room of about 12 square metres. It contains a double bed, a small kitchenette and a wardrobe. Despite the fan on the wall, it is sweltering hot inside. She shares a toilet and a shower with others.
‘My supervisor’s manager is a terrible man. He touches everyone in a bad way, and if you say you don’t want that, you have a problem. He yells at me if I have to go to the bank or the doctor. “Then who will do the work? Who will meet the target?” And he’s not the only one. They talk to us like we are animals.’
When asked about her production targets, she breathes a deep sigh. ‘The other day, Lululemon placed a huge order, and now everyone is stressed. On the first day, we had to make seventy items per hour, but on the second day, it was suddenly a hundred. Otherwise, we won’t make the delivery date.’ During the working day, she does not drink water so that she does not waste time going to the toilet. Despite this, she seldom meets the target. And that means: no bonus.
Without that bonus, Priya earns 32,000 rupees a month (97 euros). Her room costs 7,000 rupees (21 euros), and a meal 300 rupees (1 euro). She has no money left for other things.
‘Since the crisis, we are increasingly hearing stories from our members of textile workers using drugs,’ says Dandeniya. ‘Also in MAS factories that Patagonia works with. They use it to work faster. Sometimes also against the hunger.’
Chamila Thushari, union leader of Dabindu Collective, confirms the story. ‘They use Ice (Crystal Meth) or Babul.’ She points to her collar and to the sole of her shoe. ‘This is how they smuggle it in. The management knows this happens but allows it. All they care about is production targets are being met.’
An employee of a third union, GTZ-GSEU, confirms that drug use among textile workers in the Free Trade Zone is a problem.
Patagonia says these claims are ‘new’ to them and ‘serious’, but says, without evidence, it cannot comment.

A living wage

That Patagonia, known for being sustainable, has its clothes manufactured in the same factories as other much less sustainable brands is seen as an advantage by the company. ‘Patagonia has a powerful brand voice, but we are a quite small player in the apparel sector. Therefore, we are always looking for ways to scale our impact and to elevate the industry standards across the board, bringing other apparel retailers along on the journey with us. So, continuing to engage in shared production facilities is crucial to this work.’
Patagonia wants all people who make clothes to earn a decent wage. In 2015, the company promised that within 10 years, all employees in its supply chain would be earning a living wage that would be enough to live on. That is, enough for food, water, housing, education, healthcare, transport and other essential needs.
With 18 months to go, only 40 per cent of its factories pay a living wage, according to Patagonia. They would not reveal the factories concerned. Suppliers reportedly ‘have the right to maintain their factories’ wage data confidential’.

With 18 months to go, only 40 per cent of its factories pay a living wage, according to Patagonia. They would not reveal the factories concerned. Suppliers reportedly ‘have the right to maintain their factories’ wage data confidential’.
To determine a living wage, Patagonia uses the Anker Research Institute’s calculation method. According to that method, you can live decently in urban Sri Lanka if you earn a minimum of 83,231 Sri Lankan rupees (263 euro) a month. Priya’s salary does not even cover half that. And at the recently approved Regal Image print factory, the basic wage is even lower: 21,000 rupees (66 euro), says Fernando.
Thulsi Narayanasamy is frustrated by Patagonia’s approach to sustainability. She is director of advocacy at the Worker Rights Consortium, an independent non-profit organization that monitors and investigates labor conditions in the global apparel and textile industry. ‘Patagonia spends millions on green initiatives. Why can’t they pay the people who make their clothes properly?’
Patagonia says it ‘has no authority over how much textile workers get paid, as they are in no way, shape or form the employer of these workers.’ Narayanasamy, however, is convinced Patagonia can pay a living wage, if the brand would want to. ‘They could bring production in-house or pay more to suppliers that’s ringfenced for wages high enough to achieve a living income. It’s so well established that brand’s pricing practices directly impact wage levels, it’s a fallacy to deny this.’
‘I think we should ask ourselves: why don't clothing brands have their own factories?’ She asks the question, then answers it. 'Brands don't want to be responsible for the people who produce their clothes. All brands benefit from that, including Patagonia.
RESPONSE FROM PATAGONIA When asked why it does not pay its suppliers more for decent wages for workers, Patagonia replied: ‘Relying on one brand to simply cover the gap is a band-aid solution and does not serve the factory in the long run. If the one brand that pays the gap were to leave the factory, then those wages for workers would go away, leaving the factory with a shortfall they would not be able to cover. Additionally, if the brand just writes a check to the factory, then there is no guarantee that the money would go towards workers’ wages. The brand has no authority over how much workers get paid as they are in no way, shape or form the employer of those workers.’
About the long working hours, Patagonia says: ‘Excessive overtime is pervasive globally, which is why it is audited regularly. If we find a problem that can be resolved, we work with our factory partners to implement sustainable solutions. This can take many years, but we find this is the best outcome for the workers and the factory.’
In response to the allegations about drug use among textile workers, Patagonia says: ‘These are serious and new allegations, however without evidence, we are not able to comment on them. We are continuing to conduct our ongoing monitoring program and we remain committed to addressing systemic issues to ensure workers’ wellbeing across our supply chain.’

2023.06.10 11:27 Noghbuddy Secret Chord - Part 6

I realize this is a bit late. I suppose this is my public declaration that u/wolven91 can post my stories wherever. I just wanted to get this part out before the sub froze. I hope to write more, however I'm not a big fan of Tumblr, so I won't be making an account. If the Discord seems viable then I'll probably haunt that, but otherwise I'll have to figure out where to post. However this shakes out, y'all have fun and have a good one.

----------
David loved the rain. Growing up in a desert, he loved the smell that’d come off the dirt and how the overcast skies shielded the sun-bleached streets and buildings from the blinding star. He’d spend hours sitting at a coffee shop listening to music and watching the cars drive through the puddles. The rain was nothing short of miraculous. If it made it over the wall of mountains blocking David from the ocean, the rain would knock all the dust and smog out of the air revealing a crystal-clear view of all the mountains down the valley. The parched dirt greedily drank it up and sat still, free from the gusting winds. Then the next day, the brown hills and mountainsides would turn a bright vibrant green. It brought him a measure of peace.
The shuttle shuddered slightly as it passed through the atmosphere, windows becoming blocked by dark grey clouds. This planet was permanently overcast. Tons of water circled the globe, floating on the currents of air, speeding from one horizon to the other frequently dousing the surface with heavy showers. David couldn’t help a small grin sticking to his face. It’d been years since he’d seen rain.
“It’s about an hour till touchdown.” Reported the pilot over the intercom.
David turned his attention away from the windows. The shuttle reminded him of an airport bus someone threw into space, complete with cheap upholstery. It was thankfully empty save for himself and his two companions. He glanced left at Ruk’sa who was fast asleep in her chair. She stayed up all night with David, but it seems she’s not quite as used to sleep deprivation as he is. She stirred slightly, tucking her legs up under her and wrapping her tail around herself. Sarif was livid when David asked the fik to come with him, but calmed down somewhat when he explained he wanted someone to keep an eye on his apartment while he was gone.
He looked to his right at Hilda who had been studying him, pad forgotten in her lap. “Enjoying the view?” she asked gesturing to the windows.
“I love the rain.” He answered with his small smirk still in place.
“Really?
“Yeah…It always put me in a good mood back home. It sort of…refreshed me, I guess.” Hilda pondered her next question before David interrupted, “You like the rain?”
“Uh, um…I suppose so. It depends.”
“On what?”
“On how strong the storm was. If it was light rain, I didn’t mind. It was good for the crops and gave us all a reason to take it easy. No one wanted to work in the rain. But if it was a major storm…Well, then we were all worried about the damage it could cause. If there was lightning it could start a fire…”
“Crops? You’re a farm girl?”
He could see her mentally kick herself as she drew a slow breath, “Yes…I’m a farm girl…”
“I guess that explains why you look corn fed.” He mumbled.
“Corn fed?”
“Don’t worry about it. You look great. Like a brick shithouse.”
Her brows knit in confused thought. “That sounds worse.”
He chuckled then, “You look good. I promise.” They settled into silence for a while, broken by Hilda.
“What was home like?”, she asked softly.
David leaned back and took a breath, “What was it like?...Home, I guess…” He looked at his companion’s inquisitive look and sighed. “It was mostly a desert…Hot…But a paradise…The sun always shone, and the temperature was always bearable. We had beaches, snowy mountains, vast fertile plains, giant magnificent forests, and huge stretches of desert. That’s not even counting all the different cities and people. Whatever you could want, it was there…It wasn’t perfect. I hated it plenty of times…Seems a bit silly now…But, now I realize just how amazing it was…” He stared out the window, eyes unfocused.
“Was that the whole planet?”
“What? No. That was just my state. The rest of the planet had a lot more going on… You gotta remember it took a little more effort to travel before…Yeah…Especially where I lived…”
Hilda had hundreds more questions but could tell he was growing uncomfortable. She tried to shift gears, “If you really like the starshine, why do you love the rain?”
He collected his words, “It was always sunny…A bit too hot for my taste…So, the rain was a nice change of pace. It was rare…A lot of other humans hate the rain, but I think that’s just because they grew up in places where it always rained…Most people I knew who grew up without rain loved it.”
“Five till touchdown.”, reported the pilot.
Ruk’sa was roused from her nap as the shuttle shuddered slightly and swung down from the clouds. It gracefully flew through the valley to the designated landing point where it slowly landed beside half a dozen other shuttles of various makes and sizes. The trio stood and made their way out led by David.
He descended the short ramp and strode through the parked shuttles. Emerging into the open he looked toward the Guardian waiting area. There were a couple of those big bastards, a couple canids, an avian and-
He screwed his eyes shut and shook his head. His companions looked where he had. Ruk’sa put her hand on his shoulder and asked, “You want Ruk’sa to-“
“No. No, just go wait with the others…And make sure that thing doesn’t slither up the hill.”
Ruk’sa squeezed his shoulder as Hilda gave a disapproving sigh, before the duo strode off toward the other Guardians. Keeping his sight on anywhere but the gathered aliens, David started hiking up the hill.
The hill sat in the middle of a long valley covered in a bright green, almost luminescent grass, with gnarled trees dotting the hillsides. The ground beneath David gave a little with each step threatening to devolve into a muddy slurry, but the rain died down, seemingly aware of the ceremony. Breathing heavily, he finally crested the hill to find a handful of other humans.
It was shocking. He hadn’t seen another human since…Since…He couldn’t remember…Was it really since he was still a slave? The half dozen or so humans milled about the gravesite. A metal casket adorned the mockup above the grave. It wasn’t right. Sure, it was a box meant to hold a corpse, but it just seemed…off…Too bulky.
David focused on the other humans. A small group of two noticed his arrival, so he made his way over to them, straightening the subtle wrinkles in his shirt and slacks. A man and a woman greeted him as he walked up.
“Hello there!” called the man, “I thought we were supposed to have one more. How are you? Have a smooth trip?”
David could tell the man wasn’t speaking English. “Fair enough. I got the invite a bit late. Had to make a bunch of last-minute plans.”
“Sorry to hear that.” said the woman, “At least you made it. Did you know the deceased?”
“No…I thought it was strange to get the invitation, but well…If he wanted me here, I guess I could spare the time.” He noticed the other two were eyeing him strangely. He cleared his throat, “So, did either of you know him?”
“No…I don’t think anyone did. I guess he…or whoever carried out his will, just looked up the closest humans in the system and invited them. At least they were discreet.”
David didn’t understand the need for discretion, but agreed anyway, “Right…Wouldn’t want just anyone showing up.” The other two seemed confused, but quickly recovered.
“Say…” the woman began, “Do I know you?”
David shook his head, “No, I don’t think so. I don’t get out much.”
“No, I know you.” She began typing on her com, “…Hah! Is this you?” She held it up for David to see.
A vid began playing of an all too familiar back room of an all too familiar café. It showed David from the rear singing into a mic. Eyes closed in emotional concentration, “Fly me to the Moon, let me play among the stars. Let me see what spring is like, on Jupiter and Mars.” He swayed and danced slightly, enough to get a good look at his face. David stared at the video slack jawed until the end where a pair of felinoid fingers surreptitiously retrieved the recording com.
“So, it is you! I thought I recognized you.” She seemed pleased. David was a bit heartbroken. “What’s the matter? You sound wonderful.”
“I…I…”
“Say! Can you sing for the service? We don’t have anyone, and it just seems right…Could you?”
David was conflicted. Still reeling. He wasn’t betrayed exactly…He never asked to not be recorded, but this…How many people saw?...He shook himself from his reverie. “What?”
“Could you sing a hymn or two? Mr. Albrecht wanted a traditional funeral. So, that would mean a song or two, right?”
He thought for a moment. All he wanted to do was show face. Maybe see a couple humans and reconnect, but…Well… “I guess I could…I’ve done a couple funerals before…” He looked between the two and answered, “Alright…Just let me know when to go up…”
They shook his hand and patted him on the shoulder before going and finding the preacher. He could see them talking and pointing in his direction before he found a seat beside the casket facing the front. Everyone else found a seat as the older man at the front addressed the gathering.
“Welcome. Thank you all for coming. I am chaplain Richard Martinez, and I will be leading and delivering the eulogy today. Unfortunately, Mr. Albrecht’s family could not attend, however I would like to thank all of you in attendance. I know coming together as one people is a challenge, but Mr. Albrecht and I thank you for your sacrifice. We are gathered here today to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Mortimer Albrecht. During our tumultuous journey to the stars, and diaspora among its people, we lost a small sense of our joint humanity. We split and spread out to the four winds in a bid for self-preservation. But now we come together. We join one another to recognize a fellow brother and son of Earth. We come together to give final rights and recognition to the deceased that they are truly human, and we will not forget or abandon them to the cold uncaring void of space. Mr. Albrecht was born on Earth and believed in the unstoppable spirit and drive of humanity. We share this belief with all of you. Those who answered the call. Those who believed in the brotherhood of humanity. That our spirit is strong and unbreaking. That humanity will one day walk in the sun, unafraid and proud of who we are. That we will one day stand before the other races of the galaxy as an equal. Please join me in prayer as we put the spirit of Mortimer Albrech to rest. For those who practice, please bow your head and join me in prayer, and for those who don’t, please observe a respectful silence.
Dear Lord, we come before you to humbly ask that you guide Mr. Albrecht swiftly and surly to your eternal peace. That you guard and guide his spirit as surely as you guide our own. In your name we pray, amen. Now we will turn our time over to a special guest who has volunteered to sing a hymn or two.” He gestured to David in his seat.
David stood and made his way to the front of the casket and faced the small crowd. He cleared his throat and began, “Good morning. I’m David King, and I’ll sing a couple of traditional songs. You are welcome to sing along if you know the words.”
He cleared his throat, took a breath and began, “Amazing grace. How sweet the sound…”
He sang clearly and steadily, as his voice rang out through the narrow valley, keeping his hand folded in front of him. A couple of the attendees sang quietly with him, but David remained steady. Focused on the task at hand. He may not have known the man, but that was no excuse to disrespect him. He noticed the woman from before sitting in the back of the crowd, recording his performance. He considered protesting, but today wasn’t about him. Besides, what harm could it do?
When ‘Amazing Grace’ was done he went straight into ‘Danny boy.’ About that time the attendees grew misty-eyed. “You’ll bend down and tell me that you love me. And I shall rest in peace until you come to me.”
Even the preacher-man seemed reluctant to say anything, so David continued. “This next song…Means a lot to me…It got me…and others through a particularly hard time. If Samuel is somewhere out there. This is for us.” He planted himself, breathed, and began. “When peace, like a river, atendeth my way. When sorrows like sea billows roll. Whatever my lot, thou has taught me to say, it is well, it is well, with my soul…”
David hadn’t thought of that hymn in years. The memories weren’t pleasant, but it seemed appropriate at the time. Chaplin Martinez made his way up beside David and put his hand on his shoulder. “Thank you. We all appreciated that. This concludes the service for Mr. Albrecht. Go in peace.”
The tiny congregation stood a milled about before making their way back down the hill. David stayed behind to wait out the snake’s charge, looking over the casket and simple gravestone. He had hoped to maybe make some kind of connection, but the humans dispersed without so much as a word. He was alone again. And he didn’t know why.
After a time, there were only a couple shuttles left. The casket had been let down with a couple chains, and the Guardians had dispersed with their humans. David shambled down the hill and met his companions.
“Ready to go?”
“I guess.”
“You sounded beautiful.”
“You could hear that?”
Hilda nodded.
“Thanks…I try…” They boarded the shuttle and took off. David wondered if it was even worth it.

Sammuel was making his rounds through the station. The children loved him, and the parents loved the break. He stood in the middle of the park entertaining and answering questions. The dark-skinned man loved any opportunity to give back to the community that took him in. The dark-skinned man was keeping watch over some ursdain children when he heard something that caught his attention.
“When sorrows like sea billows roll.”
He sought out the youngster with the vid loaded on his com, “Hey. Could you do me a favor and show me that?”
The ssypno child seemed confused, but complied, “You know this song?”
“Whatever my lot, you have taught me to say, it is well, it is well, with my soul.”
He watched the screen intently, his jovial attitude sobering somewhat. “I know that song…I know that man…” He watched intently the man who helped him through the hardest part of his life. “You have any idea where that is?” The child of course didn’t know. “Well…I’m gonna have to find him on my own…”

The morning had come before long, the smell of delectable bug legs wafting through the air as Monty made breakfast during the last watch. Ferodias stirred from his place in the tree he had decided to sleep in, claws flexing and digging into the tree bark as he stretched his flexible feline body and yawned audibly. While he did have his own tent, Ferodias and Brasyl had given up their tents to the noble ladies so they could sleep in relative comfort. Brasyl, for one, didn't mind sleeping in the open air. As for Ferodias, he had long since grown accustomed to rougher living and was not unfamiliar with napping in trees during his youth.
"Mornin Rodi." Monty called up to Ferodias, looking up from his space beside the grill as he worked hard to ensure the meal would taste even better than yesterday's since he had a little more experience with this particular protein. "What's the plan today?" He asked, adding another leg to a growing pile of cooked legs on a wooden plate.
Ferodias let out a deep sigh of delight as he managed to pop his back, finding the relief he was looking for before slumping back against the tree trunk he had been sleeping against. "I... " He started to say before yawning again as his left ear flicked. "Don't know." He said simply, looking down at Monty before scratching the back of his head. "I'm thinking we head back to that farming village that made the commission, sure we'll have to backtrack a little, but between the fact that there are potential bandits in the area and the state those noble ladies are in; we're better off getting a farmer to give us a ride in their cart." He explained as he decided to make his way down to the tree, soon settling down across from Monty around the fire.
Monty nodded intently, grabbing a plate and setting two cooked bug legs on it before passing it over to Ferodias. "Sounds good to me. Maybe I can get a good deal on some crops and other goods before they hit the market stalls in the city." He mentioned with a bit of a smile as he went back to his work. "Besides, I'm sure the people will want to help, even if not out of the kindness of their hearts." Monty said simply, though that earned a curious head tilt from Ferodias as Monty smiled kindly before continuing. "They'll help either because we just saved them a lot of trouble by dealing with those bugs, thus earning their favor, or they'll help us in the hopes that their 'gracious' deeds will earn goodwill with their local lord and maybe get some breaks on taxes or things like that." He explained before shrugging a bit.
"I see..." Ferodias said thoughtfully, having taken the plate and gone about cracking the bug chitin. "Well, either way, it'll be easier on the ladies, and we can rest our own feet while we're at it." He considered before biting off a chunk of bug meat.
Regan was the next to wake up, fully dressed this time as he stretched and grunted before rubbing his eyes. "Morning..." He murmured before taking a seat around the fire with his pack in his lap as he rummaged through it. He then took up a small vial with green liquid after a minute or so of looking. He took a moment to eye the contents before uncorking it and downing the vial, though he immediately shuddered and made a face. "Blech... Last time I cheap out with an herbalist." He muttered miserably.
"What was that?" Ferodias asked between bites while gesturing at the bottle with his tail.
"Some kind of energy drink, the ingredients that they told me were in it sounded right according to my research, but it may be a knock-off, the taste wasn't nearly as good as I heard it was supposed to be." He explained as he smacked his lips, chasing down the energy drink with water from his skin before corking it and putting it away.
"Did you not sleep well or something? Bug nightmares?" Ferodias asked, licking at his teeth as he attempted to free a chunk of meat that was stuck between them. Though he looked genuinely concerned for his friend as he watched Regan.
Regan scoffed at the notion of nightmares, glancing over at Ferodias before flashing a smile. "Nah, nothing like that, I just used more mana than usual. I would prefer a longer rest in order to recuperate better, but we would be better off resting in a town rather than attempting to get a couple of extra hours of shut-eye in the woods." He explained, yawning as he took up a plate of bug legs. "Though I will say, the only good thing about bugs is that they sure do taste good." He mused, digging in with no complaint as he cracked the chitin.
Before long, everyone else started to wake; Brasyl not saying much as he immediately started digging into breakfast. Danica was next, ruffling Monty's hair as she passed him to go into Ferodias and Brasyl's tents, checking in with the ladies. Danica was quick to leave the tent Historietta was staying in. However, she lingered in the tent with the other two ladies. Ferodias could hear quiet sniffling and sobbing coming from the two women, his ears twitching while Danica did her very best to comfort them. His heart did go out to those ladies. They likely haven't really experienced the world, and this was their first bitter taste of it. He hoped that it wouldn't drive them from society altogether, but it wasn't anything he could really control. Well... He could do his best to show them that the world altogether isn't cruel like their kidnappers, but it will be up to them to take the message to heart.
Historietta emerged from the tent she was staying in, looking fairly rested and leagues better than she had last night. Her throat and face still looked discolored from the lingering bruising that had been left over last night. Otherwise, she appeared to be in fair spirits. Ferodias couldn't help but steal a few glances at her. She was wearing his clothes after all, and she certainly wore them better than he ever would. She managed to catch him staring and smiled in response as she walked over to the fire and settled down beside him before looking at Monty as he passed her a plate. "Thank you, sir, I'm grateful for the meal." She said politely, her voice sounding even nicer than the night before if that was possible. She ate well too, casually breaking the chitin and eating without reservation, even the other ladies attempted to be modest and polite with how they ate last night, but it seemed Historietta didn't seem to mind her manners. She caught Ferodias watching her again, flashing a mischievous smile as she wiped her lips with the sleeve of her shirt. "Don't you know it's rude to stare at a lady while she's eating?" She teased almost coyly.
Ferodias could feel his cheeks heat up under his fur, pointedly averting his gaze as the other guy snickered at his expense. "S-sorry, I don't exactly have a lot of experience with noble ladies..." He lied, glancing over at her as his ears waggled. "But I was under the impression that most ladies were rather picky and haughty for the most part, I just... Well... I..." He started stammering a bit, not sure what else to say without accidentally offending her as he anxiously scratched his cheek.
Historietta snickered softly as she sipped at a cup of water before looking over at Ferodias more pointedly. "I've gone through this before, and I have a little experience with survival camping and roughing it. Honestly, I'm doing a lot better right now than I originally planned thanks to you and your merry band." She mentioned, sounding genuinely grateful at that point as she looked at the other guys before looking back to Ferodias. "Try everything once. It is a motto I live by." She said as she worked on cracking the other bug leg on her plate. "It helped me to keep an open mind about many things and allowed me to experience things I would have otherwise missed out on." She explained as she took a bite of bug meat, taking a moment to chew and swallow before continuing. "Of course, moderation is to be exercised with a motto like mine, but it's gone okay so far." She said with a smile.
Ferodias was unsure how to move forward, not used to being on the backfoot around other nobles, let alone noble girls around his age. Yet she displayed a rather unique sense of maturity that threw him off. It was refreshing, and he found himself wanting to get to know her more while he still could at least. He was gonna speak up again when Danica emerged with the other noble ladies; those two looked pretty bad. If he was being honest, they looked exhausted and emotionally drained, among other things. They didn't say much besides their thanks after receiving some food and water. After a while longer, Ferodias spoke up again as he looked among his party and the ladies. "Alright, everyone, we're gonna be backtracking today and heading towards one of the farming villages in the area. From there, we're gonna see about hiring or buying a cart and taking the road back to the city. This way, we can save on energy and avoid more danger than we need to." He explained as he looked among his party. He got nods of approval all around, though it looked like Historietta had something on her mind.
"You're doing this because of us, aren't you?" She asked, sounding almost regretful, if not a little disappointed as she looked at the other ladies. The other ladies averted their gazes but didn't say anything in response as they had no footing to argue with a Count's daughter. Before Ferodias could respond, she looked back at him, gazing intently into his eyes. "I shall reimburse you once we get to the city. It's the least I can do." She said, no room for argument in her voice.
Though Ferodias attempted to argue anyway as he looked over to her. "What? No, there's no need for that. You're in our care. It's only right to make sure you're looked after and supported, especially when you are so far from home." He retorted, his ear flicking as he watched her. "This isn't a job or a request. This is just people helping people." He said more gently as he finished up his breakfast.
Historietta quirked a brow, staring Ferodias down before flashing a smirk as she finished up the last of her food and stood, looking him over when she met his gaze and spoke up. "Noblesse Oblige, it is the duty of those who are well off and in positions of power to behave morally upright and act for the benefit of those in their care, to watch out for those who we are responsible for. You have done me a great service, and you did so freely and at an inconvenience to yourself and those who follow you. It would be a disgrace if I did not compensate you for your services." She stated with a grin before starting to step away. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some flowers to pick." She said simply as she moved away from the group.
The others ate in silence for a little while longer before getting to their feet to start packing up camp now that breakfast was done. However, Ferodias was lost in thought, occasionally glancing in the direction he had last seen Historietta before going back to his packing. He was in awe of her. She had brains, ferocity, compassion, worldliness, and a strong sense of duty. He never heard of the concept of Noblesse Oblige, but it was something he knew he was going to live by if he ever ascended to the throne... No... When he ascended to the throne. By the time she had returned, the camp was packed, and they were ready to go. The walk, in itself, was uneventful. Feeling more along the lines of a simple hike through the woods if it wasn't for the quiet whimpering of sore noble feet. Ferodias felt that the ladies were at least lucky in the sense that they had been kidnapped while they were wearing flats, he couldn't even imagine having to run or even hike in heels like they would have likely worn at the banquet they were coming from. Though he was more impressed by Historietta once again, the noble lady having kept pace with him as he walked at the head of the group.
As a group, they had to stop multiple times for the other two ladies, the whole walk taking much longer than Ferodias would have liked, though they eventually ended up at the village as the sun began its descent into the horizon, smoke stacks rising into the sky as families no doubt got ready for dinner. As they neared the village gate, a militia guard came out to meet the party, the man flashing a smile as he recognized Ferodias and his group. "Ah, good evening adventurers. I take it you're back from the hunt?" He asked pleasantly, though he only just then noticed the ladies, looking curious but waiting for Ferodias to speak.
Ferodias offered a kind smile as his tail curled behind him. "Good evening. Yes, we finished the hunt. Thirty-seven bark bugs have fallen by our hands." He enthused before clearing his throat. "In all actuality, we are here on more serious matters, we found three noble ladies who had been kidnapped and are now escorting them. We are looking to hire anyone with a cart or a wagon willing to go to the city." He said, his ear flicking as he considered something else. "In fact, we are willing to escort a group of wagons with produce and goods for free if you'll allow the ladies to ride along as passengers." He offered, though before the guard could respond, Ferodias reached into his coin pouch in his pack and procured eight silver pieces, and placed them in the guard's hand. "Bring this to your village head. Tell him that we are also looking for room and board for the night if anyone is willing to take us in."
The guard stammered a bit at the overload of information, taking a moment to consider everything Ferodias said as he glanced over at his fellow guard who had been standing at the village gate. He then looked back to Ferodias and his party before lowering his head with a nod. "Very well, ser adventurer, come in and wait, I'll go fetch the village head." He said, taking one curious look at the ladies before allowing them through the gate and hurrying off to find the village head.
"Well, it looks like we'll get to rest with a roof over our heads, at least." Regan said with a bit of a smile, rolling his shoulders before leaning on his staff, looking admittedly worn out.
"Maybe we'll get some fresh vegetables and soft bread too." Monty mentioned as he flashed a grin. "These village mother types always cook the best foods for the soul." He mused cheerfully.
"Oh gods, soft bread." Danica parroted almost dreamily. "Probably freshly baked too." She considered with a smile.
"Alright, alright, enough talking about food. You're making me hungry." Ferodias mused as he looked among the party. Two of the ladies had taken to sitting against some random crates along someone's fence line, looking especially exhausted. But Historietta seemed to be fine overall. If not as tired as Ferodias' group, she caught him watching her again and only offered a smile but didn't say anything while they waited.
Before long, the guard returned with an older rabbitkin man. He appeared to be in his late fifties but stood strong and tall as he smiled at the group. "Welcome back, adventurers. I'm glad to see your safe return and hear of your success. It seems we have business to talk about, but for now, let's get you all inside and fed, I'll have someone draw water for baths, no doubt you all are rather weary and could use some creature comforts." He said as he looked at everyone.
Ferodias smiled before lowering his head out of polite respect and looked up at the village head. "Thank you for your hospitality." He said politely, his left ear flicking contently.
The rabbitkin flashed a charming grin. "Thank you for your work. It's thanks to you that we won't have to worry about our fall crops later this year." He expressed before turning to lead the group.
Historietta came up beside Ferodias and smiled as she nudged him with her elbow. "You handled all that pretty well, good work, mister adventurer." She mused almost playfully before looking after the rabbitkin man and speaking more softly into Ferodias' ears, causing them to waggle at the sensation of her breath. "He's a good man. You can trust his sincerity." She whispered before stepping away and rejoining the other ladies.
Ferodias could feel his face warm up, his heart thumping at the sudden interaction he had with Historietta. He wasn't sure how she knew what she knew or how she even knew that he had some doubts about the village head, but he'll admit it was something that he was vaguely worried about. But if someone of her character said he could trust the village head, then he would let his worries rest. It's strange though, how is it that he could so readily trust the opinion of a girl he barely met a day ago? Maybe Regan was right. Maybe he really is hopelessly in love with that girl already.

2023.06.10 10:55 lady-of-hell Midnight Train: Origins [Part 4] - Gifts

My name is Billie and I was a passenger of the Midnight Train. Last time we had a little adventure outside and returned with a new friend. In this part, we'll see a familiar face again.
A day after the ordeal in the corridors, I was on my way to purchase a chocolate bar from one of the vending machines. It wouldn't be nearly enough to repay John for saving my life, but I figured I'd just start with something I knew he liked and then take it from there. That little plan was the only reason why I was in one of the common wagons in the early morning, Kira next to me as always.
I was looking at the display of the vending machine, trying to decide what John would like the most, when I felt someone tug on the sleeve of my jacket. Turning my head I already expected the worst, but I found myself relieved when I saw the Distributor looking up at me. "Hey buddy", I greeted the black-eyed kid with a smile. "Here to save my life again?"
His face betrayed no sign of emotion. All he did was reach into his bag, like he always did, and pulled out yet another object he apparently wanted me to have.
"What the hell?" I took the gun he offered hesitantly. It wasn't the first weapon he had handed me – I had used the knife he had given me to kill, after all – and it wasn't the first time I held a gun in my hands, but it still scared me a bit. Last year, when my father had shown me how to use a gun, the targets had been bottles and tin cans. I was convinced that this gift wasn't meant for an equally inanimate target.
The Distributor didn't answer – not that he could, considering the thread that held his mouth shut. He simply turned around and walked away, his purpose fulfilled.
Thoroughly confused, I checked the gun to find that there was only one bullet in it. Not sure if that fact made the situation better or worse, I decided to hurry up and turned back to the vending machine, picking a random piece of chocolate. I longed for the safety of my compartment, where no inhuman could enter.
When I turned away, I was met with the terrified face of a fellow passenger and a wagon that was covered in ash.
I remember the face of the man in great detail. Dark hair, greenish blue eyes, beard stubble, a rather large nose, thin lips, a silver piercing through his left eyebrow. He might have been talking, but if he was, I couldn't hear him over the blood rushing in my ears.
I was terrified. There was no way I could make it out alive of the ash world twice. I was panicking as I could already see the ash monsters – the Cinder Queen's guards – walk down the hallway, towards the other man and me. She had already spared me once, I didn't expect her to do it again.
I remembered seeing Derek turn into an ash monster.
Then gun was heavy in my hand and I silently cursed the Distributor for handing me a weapon with a single bullet against several ash monsters. My aim wasn't good enough to even take out one, and that was assuming that bullets could hurt these creatures.
There was another option, of course. Another way this gun could save me from the cruel fate of turning into one of the Cinder Queen's servants. A single bullet... but I couldn't bring myself to lift the cold metal to my head. Not when there was one other way. One that could result in me making it out alive.
Derek had told me not to run from the ash monsters. He'd called them predators and had said that running away would set off their instincts and make them chase me. But the thing about predators was that they went for the weakest animals in the herd. The old or wounded ones. And that fact was my way out.
I didn't get the chance to overthink my plan, as the ash monsters were approaching quickly. In the fracture of a second I made my decision, raised the gun and pulled the trigger.
The dark-haired man looked at me with wide eyes as blood seeped through the light fabric of his shirt. He slowly raised his hands to press them against the wound in his stomach as the ash monsters roared behind him. I let the gun slip from my hands, but the sound of it hitting the floor drowned in the monsters' screams.
Not wasting any more time, I turned and ran towards the next door, away from the Cinder Queen and her monsters. "Kira!", I screamed for my dog, but didn't turn around to see wether she was following me. I had to get out quickly.
I ran as fast as I could, threw the door to the next wagon open, stumbled over the threshold and breathed a sigh of relief when I found my surroundings free of ash. With shaking hands and a racing heart I leaned against the nearest wall and tried to catch my breath as I realized that there was no time for me to rest. Pallid white smoke was rising from the ground.
The Fog.
Fuck!
"Kira!", I screamed again as I sprinted forward. I had to reach the compartment now, or I was dead. Things were going from bad to worse and I cursed the Midnight Train as I hurried down the hallway. Cool fog gathered around my feet. Kira barked somewhere behind me. Again, I didn't turn around. The Fog felt like needles digging into my skin.
I saw the door to John's compartment.
Without knocking I barged through the door, spun back around without saying a word to John, and screamed for my dog again. She was hurrying down the hallway, still so far from the open door, as the Fog rose higher and higher.
Then, suddenly, the door was slammed shut in front of me and I turned around to see John stand right next to me. "What are you doing?", I screamed at him.
"We can't let the Fog get in!"
"Kira is outside!"
"The Fog is outside!", he repeated urgently. "It's going to kill us, Billie!"
"It's going to kill my fucking dog!" Tears were streaming down my face at this point.
"It's too late. I'm sorry." He sighed. "Why were you outside anyways?"
"The Cinder Queen... she... oh my god, John, I saw a man die!", I sobbed. It was such a blatant lie. I had shot a man, I had killed him, but I hadn't watched him die. But I couldn't tell John that, I couldn't handle whatever reaction he might show to that reveal. I couldn't let him know I was a murderer.
As I slowly began to understand what had just happened and the gravity of the situation settled in, I fell to my knees, sobbing hysterically. When John pulled me into a hug, I dug my fingers into the fabric of his suit and leaned my head against his shoulder. I cried for what felt like hours, for a man whose name I'd never know. And for my Kira, who I had left to die.
I left the compartment as soon as the Fog had faded, hoping beyond hope that I'd find Kira alive. I held onto John's hand, gripping it so tightly that my knuckles turned white.
She wasn't far from the compartment door. Lying in the middle of the hallway. A choked sound escaped my throat as I recognized the mess of black fur. I knelt down next to her and hesitantly touched the corpse. Empty, Derek had described the victims of the Fog. Hollowed. He'd been right, there was nothing left of my dog but skin and bone, I could feel it as I cradled her head in my lap.
"I'm so sorry, baby", I sobbed and the tears started to fall once more. "I'm so sorry."
I barely noticed John sitting beside me, combing his fingers through Kira's fur.
We stayed like this until the Conductor showed up eventually and took the body away. The events after that were blurry. I was detached, numb, wether because of the unknown man or Kira or both I had no idea. Days passed and I forgot to count them, they all blurred together to a jumbled mess of meals in the dining wagon, monosyllibic conversations, nights on the floor of John's compartment, and nightmares that had me waking up screaming. The train was quiet without my loyal dog by my side. I almost expected the silence to drive me insane.
I didn't know how long it took me to recover at least enough to function again. I wasn't sure what made me feel better eventually, maybe I'd just had enough time to grief. It didn't matter though. I felt almost okay when I sat next to John in one of the common wagons, still leaning against him for comfort like I had done every day since Kira had died. That was the day he finally asked the question I had been expecting since the beginning. "Why did you enter the Midnight Train, Billie?"
I sighed. Even though I had expected this, it wasn't a particularly pleasant memory to revisit and to be honest, I was kind of scared to tell my only friend about it. There was a good chance that he would hate me, be disgusted by me, never talk to me again. "Guess I owe you this", I admitted with a tight-lipped smile. "Promise you won't leave me?"
He raised an eyebrow. "What did you do?"
"Okay..." I took a deep breath. "The day I came here... my parents caught me with someone. I was making out with someone from school and they freaked out. I overheard them talking about sending me away and I panicked, so I packed my stuff and ran away. Got into the train just to get some distance between me and them, so they wouldn't find me", I explained quickly. "I have an uncle in california. That's where I wanted to go."
He nodded, though there was confusion written all over his face. "If you don't mind me asking, why would your parents react so drastically to catching you with a boy?"
I could have simply kept my mouth shut, told him that I didn't want to answer this. But I took a moment to look at him, look at his bright blue eyes, and decided to take a leap of faith and trust the man who had been there for me from the beginning once more. "It wasn't a boy", I blurted out. "They caught me with a girl, okay? I'm a lesbian!"
I could watch the realization dawn on his face. "Oh. I see", he said, slowly nodding.
"So... you hate me now?"
"Why would I?", he replied. "It doesn't affect me, Billie, why should I care?"
I shrugged. "Don't know. Lots of people do."
"I'm sorry you had to go through this." He sounded so sincere, I actually ended up crying again and hugged my friend tightly.
"And why are you here?", I asked after a few moments, my arms still wrapped around his shoulders.
"Nothing particular." He chuckled, but there was little joy in it. "I was on my way home, you know? It was a normal day, I've worked some overtime at the office, got a drink in a nearby bar and then entered the wrong train. A mere accident."
"That sucks", I said.
He shrugged. "Yes. I guess it does."
It was later that very same day when we were on our way from the dining wagon back to our compartments. We wandered through the hallways in comfortable silence and I was looking forward to laying in my bed and listening to music for a little while, when suddenly the lights started to flicker.
I turned my head to look at John. "What's going on?", I asked urgently.
"I don't know. This doesn't fit any entity I know." While speaking, he had knelt down on the floor and opened his briefcase.
"The lights are going out!" I pointed at the lightbulbs as they flickered faster. Although I didn't know what was going to happen, I didn't want to wait for darkness to fall. This was the Midnight Train after all, and nothing good would wait for us once the lights were out.
"I know!", John replied. "I assume that's why the Distributor handed me this." He rose to his feet again and showed me a flashlight.
"Okay. Cool. Or maybe we could just..." Run, I wanted to say, but in that moment the lights went out, effectively cutting me off. A low growl echoed through the darkness and I grabbed John's arm, holding onto him for dear life. "Oh my god, we're dead!", I screeched.
John didn't say anything to that, just turned the flashlight on and made white light breach the shadows.
I wasn't sure what I expected to see, but never would I have imagined what stood right in front of us. The thing was made of sentient shadow, negative space in the all-consuming darkness. Its broad form was melting into the shadows around it, making it impossible to determine its outlines. There were legs, claws, but they seemed to be placed in random spots on the body, some stretching into a direction where it would never touch the ground. It had three mouths, each with a unique set of teeth, and these maws were placed just as randomly. However, other facial features were missing entirely, no ears or nose or eyes could be seen anywhere on the bizarre creature.
"What is this?", I whispered, not daring to move an inch.
"A new entity, I assume." John's answer was unreasonably calm, considering the situation we were in.
"How the actual fuck are you not panicking?"
"I have a theory", he informed me. "One I haven't been able to confirm until now. This might be the chance."
I wanted to ask him if he really thought that this was a good opportunity to test some random theory about... whatever, and if he could maybe wait with that until we weren't in an acutely life-threatening situation, but I didn't get the chance to speak. The beast in front of us growled, snapped two of its maws shut as a warning, and slowly advanced on us. I grabbed John's arm tighter, nauseous with fear as I realized that we were going to die.
John, who had me wondering wether he had lost his mind, took a step forward, towards the growling monster. "No!", he told the thing firmly.
The threatening noise stopped.
"No!", John repeated and took yet another step forward – and dragging me along with him because I refused to let go of his hand. "Bad dog! Sit!"
I seriously wondered wether I was dreaming when the creature actually closed its mouths and lowered itself onto the ground.
"No... no, it can't be...", I whispered as realization dawned on me. I let go of John and closed the distance between the creature and me, kneeling down next to it. "Kira?"
And indeed, the monster twitched at the mention of that name. One of its paws reached for me and I hesitantly lifted my hand to meet it halfway. The touch was unpleasant, like needles digging into my skin, but I forced myself to ignore the pain. "Hey, baby", I greeted her, my voice shaking. "What happened to you, hm? What did the train do to you?"
"Those who die here turn into new entities." John sat down next to me and Kira – or the monster that had once been Kira – reached for him too. He didn't hesitate, just let her giant paw touch his hand as if it was the most normal thing in the world. "It's not only the Cinder Queen with her ash creatures, it applies to everyone. When the Fog killed Kira, she became... this."
"That was your theory?"
"Yes", he answered.
"So if I die here..."
"You'd become an entity as well."
I nodded slowly. It was a huge revelation, sure, but it didn't change much for me. I still wanted to get out – hell, I didn't want to end up as a monster – and this fact didn't help me with my goal. "I'm just glad you're back, baby", I told the creature and reached with my other hand for her to cuddle with her.
An angry hiss came from one of her throats, she bared a row of needle-like teeth and I immediately pulled my hand back.
"Be careful with her", John warned me. "That's not Kira anymore. I'm not sure if she'll continue to remember us."
I had expected that. Of course my Kira was gone, I had seen her dead body. But it still hurt to hear these words, to know beyond the shadow of a doubt that I had lost my beloved friend for good. I blinked the tears away and looked at the monstrous thing in front of me. "Darkbeast", I decided.
"Excuse me?"
"She needs a new name, doesn't she? So, can we call her the Darkbeast? I want her to have a good name..." I trailed off. "It's stupid, right?"
"I think it's only fitting that you choose her name", he replied. "Darkbeast it is."
And so I sat on the floor of a dark wagon, in the small beacon of light the flashlight provided, holding the hand of a monster made of shadows, and all I said was: "I still love you, baby."
The Darkbeast didn't reply.
We eventually made it out of the wagon alive and unharmed, of course. Things were as peaceful as the train could be after that and the supposed earth-shattering revelation that all entities had once been human didn't change anything for us. What did it matter that the Cinder Queen or the Distributor had once been like us? They weren't anymore, that was all that was important.
Day after day went by and the more time passed, the less I believed I'd ever reach my goal and leave the train. I almost resigned myself to my fate, thinking that maybe it wouldn't be so bad as long as John was with me. Having a friend made this place bearable.
"What would you do if you got to leave?", John asked me one day, when I was sitting on the floor of his compartment.
"Move in with my uncle and his boyfriend. And then... I always wanted to become a vet, you know?", I told him, smiling about this dreamed I'd had since childhood. "What about you?"
He just shrugged. "Nothing different, I assume. Work at the office, visit the bar... maybe I'll get a goldfish."
"Hey, goldfish are cool", I joked as I noticed how indifferent he sounded, hoping to lighten his mood a little.
"I guess they are, Billie." He looked almost sad as he replied. "I guess they are."
But all of that was hypothetical, of course, because we didn't have tickets and we'd never be able to leave the train.
Or so I thought.
The beginning of the end was a day like every other. John and I sat in one of the common wagons, me with a small pack of chips and him with a chocolate bar, when the Conductor suddenly approached us. "Excuse me, sir?", he said, looking straight at John. "The Midnight Train will arrive at your destination shortly. Please make sure you have your ticket ready and leave none of your belongings behind."
"What the fuck?" I spun around, staring at my friend with wide eyes while the Conductor was walking away again. "What's that supposed to mean? Destination? Ticket? You don't have one!"
"I do", he replied, not meeting my eyes.
"What?"
"I do have a ticket." He shrugged. "I lied to you, Billie."
Now that hurt more than it should. I knew he owed me nothing, but I'd lie if I said I wasn't mad at him for deceiving me for so long, playing along while knowing that he'd get out of here eventually. I didn't say anthing, mostly because I wasn't sure wether I'd snap at him or just start crying.
"Think about it", John said when he noticed my lack of reaction. "Admitting to own a ticket is dangerous. Desperation drives people to do terrible things, I couldn't be sure you wouldn't kill me and take my ticket."
"I wouldn't have done that", I whispered, although I understood exactly what he meant.
"I couldn't be sure", he repeated.
Now that I'd had a few minutes to process the shock, I was able to smile at my friend. "I'm happy for you", I said and it wasn't even a lie. "Seriously, at least one of us gets to go home, that's awesome. I mean..." I paused, noticing the somber expression on his face. "Hey, why aren't you happy? You should be celebrating right now."
"I guess you're right", he agreed with a bitter smile. There was no idication that he actually wanted to celebrate his departure.
"I want to see you off, okay? Not gonna try to steal your ticket, promise! I just... I want to say goodbye."
"Of course."
I held his hand as we walked towards the nearest doors while the train slowed down. Neither of us looked happy. The doors were open when we arrived and John opened his briefcase, from where he retrieved an ordinary train ticket. "So that's why you never let go off that thing", I joked, pointing at the briefcase.
John chuckled. "I've grown quite attached to it."
And there we stood, in front of the open doors, looking at the small, deserted train station outside. John held his ticket in his hand, there wasn't even a hint of a smile on his face when he looked at what I supposed was his hometown's train station. For a few seconds, there was absolute silence. The Conductor, who stood next to the doors, looked patiently at John.
"So... that's it, hm?", I said after a while. "I'm gonna miss you, you know? If I ever make it out of here, I'm gonna visit you." I blinked a few times, trying to make the tears disappear. "Do I get to make a last wish? If you ever buy that goldfish, name him after me, yeah?"
Only then he looked at me, serious as ever. "You want to become a vet", he said, more statement then question.
"Uhm... yeah?" I was confused then, unsure where he was going with this.
"This uncle of yours... will you be okay when you stay with him?"
"Well, I haven't seen him in a few years because mom and him don't talk anymore, but I always liked him. He's a good guy, owns a car repair shop... John, why are you asking this?"
He looked at the ticket in his hand, over at the Conductor and at the open doors. The freedom waiting right behind this threshold.
And he shook his head. "Take it, Billie!", he said, offering me the ticket.
That will be all for this part. The next one will be the great finale, where our fates are finally decided.
Until then, hold on to your dreams.
They might just come true one day.

2023.06.10 09:03 ApatheticAussieApe Tinfoil Thinking Caps On

Disclaimer: Buckle the Fuckle up. This is going to get REALLY FUD-y. I promise you, it all comes together by the end. It will jack your fuckin tits.
TL;DR: GameStop has been defending Apes from Quarterly FUD. Stonk mods are uber-shills. Next Quarter big PP swelling.
There are a few possibilities on why DRS is slowing down, in my opinion. This will relate to a DD on called "GameStop's 10-Q Numbers: Bullish".
The obvious one, the boot of inflation is firmly planted on the face of the people, forcing people into poverty prevents more share purchases. While definitely occurring, it can't possibly slow our DRS rate that much (just remember the 1.2mil whale guy, he floats the past 2 quarters alone).
Our poorest Apes are being forced into selling by inflation. I don't believe this for a second. Sell at a loss, break your diamond hands and your chance at financial freedom? There's nothing the world could force onto me to do that. I'd go proper homeless first. But maybe that's my anger talking, I don't have kids or elderly to care for, after all.
BUT! Ledger Observer Apes have changed the game. No wonder the Stonk mods hate it so much, to the point some weird weekend FUD about revealing the names of Holders appeared. Remember: GameStop Legal checked Miller's notes when he left! SHF fear the knowledge we gained from the ledger, and engineered this as damage control. Also, remember this! No other number matters but Cede's holdings on the record. Let me explain:
We now know Cede and Co. Know exactly how many shares they hold, because GameStop and ComputerShare know at all times (also the Bobby bankruptcy filings). Therefore, Cede and SHF can track our DRS progress via watching the decline of Cede holdings.
What does that actually mean for us, though? Good question. It means every quarter, previously-DRS shares can be removed from DRS (the DRS rug pull, remember?) exactly as the SHF and Cede want/need.
Remember when we got the "it's over" FUD for the 37th time and they claimed retail sold and we got our first dramatic under-performance on DRS? One dude registered like 100k shares and it prevented us going negative. SHF and Cede had us by the balls, and one mother fuckin big dick swinging silverback smashed through hedgie dreams.
Why has GameStop been delaying the record date for DRS count until seemingly-random, obscure days that changes every quarter? They have direct access to the ledger, at any time, because Apes have seen the ledger... that means they can see the DRS count rise and fall with DRS and un-DRS. And so can ComputerShare.
Thinking Caps on, Apes. Are you ready?
GameStop has been delaying reporting DRS counts in earnings until we'd re-registered enough shares taken out by Cede and SHF unregistering, such that the DRS count was still growing.
What about heat lamp theory? I don't know. Based on the ledger, it looks to be bullshit. GameStop acknowledges the fractional share and also plan holdings. I think heat lamp is correct in that plan shares are held at the DTCC which makes my peepee extra-small-inverted. Fuck the DTCC, it's book for me. But this does have an important implication I'll get to later.
How are Cede and SHFs manipulating DRS counts, then?
The less nefarious method would be through the 5-8 million shares held before DRS even started (which would be through companies Miller and such would have seen at least the remnants of). If there are no companies left on the DRS list, that means we've finally exhausted the "DRS rug pull". Next quarter, we'll see a recovery to several million shares DRS growth again.
The alternative method is far more insidious, a brutal psyop, and thus much more likely. Per the DD in stonk, "The S-Curve" never started. We are still at the beginning of the S, and the S hasn't actually picked up steam (because DRS isn't mainstream AT ALL YET). Think about it. We're seeing news popping up about DRS and book vs plan right now. That's the beginning of mainstream acknowledgement, acceptance and, eventually, adoption.
So what does this actually mean?
It means a huge chunk of the initial DRS wave was SHFs DRSing shares as "individual shareholders" (who have camouflage, being individuals instead of companies who have to make filings and such). What if there are actually only 100k Apes, and half the initial DRS wave was SHF, and we only really held about 30 million shares DRS? Every quarter since, we've added millions and the SHF have been un-DRSing to counteract it? GameStop withholds filings until they catch a day where a bunch of buys hit and we go positive growth, and then records it.
So why Book King? Because Plan shares are locates! SHF will hold ALL their shares in Plan, Every. Single. One. A locate despite being "DRS".
Book King was a signal to us not only to shut down locates, but also to give GameStop an indicator of how many SHF shares are still "Plan-DRS". And now we know, thanks to Miller and such, it's probably about 20% left, as there was 20% of Holders with Plan shares still.
But it's probably less. A fucking lot less. Because Heat Lamp.
Heat Lamp required selling fractionals, which we now know GameStop and Cede both acknowledge. Locates, yes, but the shares are still recorded on GameStop's ledger as being directly held by an investor.
At the time, I thought about this and said "eh, .49 shares per account, times 200k, about 98k shares, that's fuck all! We're registering millions per quarter!"
But we, apparently, aren't, are we? Only 600k. And if you go look at Stonk, what do you see? Shills saying "it'll take 84 years to lock the float!" Derpy derp. PsyOp. 100k fractionals sold off is 16% of the current DRS growth for the quarter. That's actually a big fuckin' deal right now. That 100k shares may well be what would've pushed us negative growth if GameStop didn't pick its day to record holders.
So, I said it'd come together at the end. Here you go. The reward for your efforts reading my tinfoil.
If this is accurate and correct, next quarter, we're going to see several million shares registered once again. And here's why.
Heat Lamp made us sell fractionals. Just 100k. Fuckin chump change for Apes, right? It's the Loki meme.
"You must be truly desparate to come to me for help"
They used a fuckin PsyOp to make a chunk of Apes give up, AT MOST 100k shares. Probably more like 50k or less, just to try and damage DRS growth for ONE quarter!
The DRS Rug Pull never ended. It's been going for every quarter since it started. RC told us to go Book King so GameStop can see clearly just how many SHF accounts might be left.
But the SHF DRS accounts are emptying, if not empty. Thus, heat lamp fractional sales (which don't affect GameStop's ledger but DO provide locates for DTC and SHF) to help SHF drop numbers.
This is also why GameStop stopped reporting the number of Holders. Because the actual number of DRS holders has been decreasing as SHF delete positions.
GameStop, and RC, have been protecting Apes just as much as we have been protecting GameStop via Old Faithful (Buy, Hold, DRS Book, Vote, Shop). They've been cherrypicking DRS record dates to prevent "they're leaving!!" FUD, obscuring holder count to hide the fact SHFs accounts are disappearing, blocking more "They're leaving!!" FUD, while simultaneously letting us know both they and the DTC know the real counts.
But we've made it to the other side. We've finally broken the back of SHFs Rug Pull, because they're playing for JUST our fractionals. You even have Stonk mods making completely unverifiable claims of DRS holders DMing them saying "I'm un-DRSing because of this!!" Aka, "retail have left!!"
Those same Stonk Mods who have been shitting on Bobby for months after bankruptcy, while anyone keeping an eye on Bobby knows RC has been involved the entire way.
They fought so hard for MONTHS to make it one more quarter of PsyOp.
Take a sharpie out of your pooper and draw a line from when DRS started, to now. EVERYTHING above that line was probably SHF fake DRS for rug pulls. But we've won, Apes. Let's. Fuckin. Go.
Next Quarter, Apes, next fucking quarter. We're gonna see some mother fucking fireworks.
Remember Apes, this is tinfoil. Think critically and try to disprove it. That's what we do :)

Edit PS: I have this posted on my account. Feel free to share it on Stonk or anywhere else you like. I don't have the karma to post there anyways :)

That’s why the art and craft of wedding highlight video lies in the editing. Without masterful video editing, it’s hard to imagine the footage, music, audio, emotions and storytelling coming together to create a video that will be cherished for a lifetime.
As a wedding videographer, you know it’s a great video when it succeeds in making your clients cry, laugh, and relive every moment over and over again. That’s exactly what a professionally-edited wedding highlight video achieves.
Let’s dive into some of the basics and techniques of successful wedding highlight video editing.

Understanding Wedding Highlight Videos

Wedding highlight videos are short cinematic films that capture the best moments of a couple’s wedding day in 4–6 minutes.
However, a highlight video is more than a summary of the special day. It is a beautiful keepsake for the years to come. It involves storytelling, emotions, and visuals to create a compelling and unforgettable experience for the viewers.
The editing for these videos is done skilfully to combine elements such as storytelling, emotions, and visuals to create a captivating and unforgettable experience for the couple and their friends and family.

Techniques for Wedding Highlight Video Editing

Wedding highlight video editing is an art that requires careful consideration of various elements to create a captivating and emotionally charged video. Here are some of the elements that come together to create it.

Storytelling: Weaving a Compelling Narrative

The couple’s vows, officiant’s speech and toasts from the wedding day are used to weave a compelling narrative. The video editor carefully selects and arranges these moments in a way that tells a beautiful love story, capturing the essence of the couple’s special day.

Visuals: Capturing the Essence of the Wedding Day

Candid moments, such as stolen glances, laughter, and tears, are carefully chosen to create an authentic and emotional experience for the viewers. Details, such as the rings, flowers, and decor, are also highlighted to add depth and richness to the video. The reactions of family and friends, from heartfelt speeches to tearful hugs, are carefully included to convey the emotional impact of the day.

Color Grading: Creating a Visually Appealing and Cohesive Look

Color grading, on the other hand, involves adjusting the colors and tones of the footage to create a visually appealing and cohesive look. All the cameras are matched as closely as possible and the footage is graded to achieve a look that complements the visuals.

Sound Design: Enhancing the Audio Experience

Sound design involves enhancing the audio by removing noise, equalizing, and levelling all audio tracks to create a seamless and immersive experience for the viewers. Ambient and acoustic sounds, such as the rustling of leaves or the sound of waves crashing, can be added to enhance the overall audio experience.

Music Selection: Setting the Tone and Mood

The right music can evoke deep emotions and add a layer of sentimentality to the visuals, amplifying the overall impact of the video. The video editor carefully selects music that complements the couple’s love story and the emotions captured in the footage.

Video Editing Techniques: Polishing the Footage

Various techniques, such as trimming, cutting, and rearranging footage — polish the video for a visually appealing result. Transitions, effects, and creative elements are added to enhance the video’s aesthetics and flow. A cohesive storyline are crucial to engaging viewers.

Audio Enhancements: Elevating the Emotional Impact

Audio enhancements play a crucial role in elevating the emotional impact of a video. This involves adding carefully selected music that complements the video’s mood, tone, and emotions.
