2023.05.07 18:58 I-am-the-Peel (Spoilers Extended) Leyton Hightower is the Lord of Light, Mad Maid is Quaithe, a tinfoil theory
And beyond, where the Honeywine widened into Whispering Sound, rose the Hightower, its beacon fires bright against the dawn. From where it stood atop the bluffs of Battle Island, its shadow cut the city like a sword. Those born and raised in Oldtown could tell the time of day by where that shadow fell. Some claimed a man could see all the way to the Wall from the top. Perhaps that was why Lord Leyton had not made the descent in more than a decade, preferring to rule his city from the clouds. - AFFC - PROLOGUE(George suggests seeing all the way to the Wall as an explanation for why Leyton has stayed atop the Hightower building for so long, and plants the idea of a connection between Leyton and the Wall quickly, remember this dear readers as we'll get back to this connection later)
"To celebrate his victory, Robert ordained that a tourney should be held outside Lannisport. It was there I saw Lynesse, a maid half my age. She had come up from Oldtown with her father to see her brothers joust. I could not take my eyes off her. In a fit of madness, I begged her favor to wear in the tourney, never dreaming she would grant my request, yet she did." "I fight as well as any man, Khaleesi, but I have never been a tourney knight. Yet with Lynesse's favor knotted round my arm, I was a different man. I won joust after joust. Lord Jason Mallister fell before me, and Bronze Yohn Royce. Ser Ryman Frey, his brother Ser Hosteen, Lord Whent, Strongboar, even Ser Boros Blount of the Kingsguard, I unhorsed them all. In the last match, I broke nine lances against Jaime Lannister to no result, and King Robert gave me the champion's laurel. I crowned Lynesse queen of love and beauty, and that very night went to her father and asked for her hand. I was drunk, as much on glory as on wine. By rights I should have gotten a contemptuous refusal, but Lord Leyton accepted my offer. We were married there in Lannisport, and for a fortnight I was the happiest man in the wide world."This happened in 289 AC. The series of ASOIAF begins in 298 AC in AGOT, when George establishes that the long summer is starting to end after over ten years;
The old men called this weather spirit summer, and said it meant the season was giving up its ghosts at last. After this the cold would come, they warned, and a long summer always meant a long winter. This summer had lasted ten years. Jon had been a babe in arms when it began. - AGOT - JON VIIThis means that the previous winter must have ended around 288 AC, or in the late 280s AC at the least. This is around the time that Leyton Hightower decided to head up to the top of the Hightower building and seclude himself there, for the entirety of the long summer.
Why, sister, he never claims Jaime paid you. Tyrion made a show of glancing over the writing again. There had been some niggling phrase . . . "Done in the Light of the Lord," he read. "A queer choice of words, that." Pycelle cleared his throat. "These words often appear in letters and documents from the Free Cities. They mean no more than, let us say, written in the sight of god. The god of the red priests. It is their usage, I do believe." "Varys told us some years past that Lady Selyse had taken up with a red priest," Littlefinger reminded them. - ACOK - TYRION IIIAnd during all of this time, Leyton has been locked away at the top of the Hightower with his daughter Malara, reading different books of spells;
"The Hightower must be doing something." "To be sure. Lord Leyton's locked atop his tower with the Mad Maid, consulting books of spells. Might be he'll raise an army from the deeps. Or not. Baelor's building galleys, Gunthor has charge of the harbor, Garth is training new recruits, and Humfrey's gone to Lys to hire sellsails. If he can winkle a proper fleet out of his whore of a sister, we can start paying back the ironmen with some of their own coin. Till then, the best we can do is guard the sound and wait for the bitch queen in King's Landing to let Lord Paxter off his leash." - AFFC - SAMWELL VGeorge firmly establishes the Hightowers to hold a deep interest and knowledge of magical arts, right at the very beginning of AFFC before the story even begins;
The Hightowers were instrumental in the founding of the Citadel and continue to protect it to this day. Subtle and sophisticated, they have always been great patrons of learning and the Faith, and it is said that certain of them have also dabbled in alchemy, necromancy, and other sorcerous arts. -AFFC, APPENDIXSo we have a family with a history of "dabbling" in forms of magical powers, among them alchemy, and their current lord Leyton holds a personal strong interest in learning magical powers, and has been researching this for several years, around the same time that Melisandre came to Westeros after seeing visions of the Others marching south and Stannis being the chosen one to stop them.
"What feeds the flame?" asked Sam. "What feeds a dragon's fire?" Marwyn seated himself upon a stool. "All Valyrian sorcery was rooted in blood or fire. The sorcerers of the Freehold could see across mountains, seas, and deserts with one of these glass candles. They could enter a man's dreams and give him visions, and speak to one another half a world apart, seated before their candles. Do you think that might be useful, Slayer?" "We would have no more need of ravens." - AFFC - SAMWELL VThe glass candles have the power to invoke dreams and visions into the minds of individuals, and these dreams and visions can be whatever the candle's holder wishes them to be. I believe this is how the Lord of Light presents visions in the flames to followers like Melisandre - with a glass candle, its power also originating from Old Valyria.
A hush fell over the torchlit terrace. Armen sighed and shook his head. Mollander began to laugh. The Sphinx studied Leo with his big black eyes. Roone looked lost. Pate knew about the glass candles, though he had never seen one burn. They were the worst-kept secret of the Citadel. It was said that they had been brought to Oldtown from Valyria a thousand years before the Doom. He had heard there were four; one was green and three were black, and all were tall and twisted. - AFFC - PROLOGUEIts reasonable to believe that Leyton would have knowledge of these magical artifacts being brought to his city, especially given his interest in forms of magic and his long family having deep connections and relationships across the city.
Dany had laughed when he told her. "Was it not you who told me warlocks were no more than old soldiers, vainly boasting of forgotten deeds and lost prowess?" Xaro looked troubled. "And so it was, then. But now? I am less certain. It is said that the glass candles are burning in the house of Urrathon Night-Walker, that have not burned in a hundred years. Ghost grass grows in the Garden of Gehane, phantom tortoises have been seen carrying messages between the windowless houses on Warlock's Way, and all the rats in the city are chewing off their tails. - ACOK - DAENERYS VI believe Leyton Hightower is in possession of one of these many glass candles, and has been using it in recent years to give visions to Red Priests and Priestesses like Melisandre to encourage them to come North and help defeat the Others.
When first glimpsed in the pages of history, the Hightowers are already kings, ruling Oldtown from Battle Isle. The first "high tower," the chroniclers tell us, was made of wood and rose some fifty feet above the ancient fortress that was its foundation. Neither it, nor the taller timber towers that followed in the centuries to come, were meant to be a dwelling; they were purely beacon towers, built to light a path for trading ships up the fog-shrouded waters of Whispering Sound. The early Hightowers lived amidst the gloomy halls, vaults, and chambers of the strange stone below. It was only with the building of the fifth tower, the first to be made entirely of stone, that the Hightower became a seat worthy of a great house. That tower, we are told, rose two hundred feet above the harbor. Some say it was designed by Brandon the Builder, whilst others name his son, another Brandon; the king who demanded it, and paid for it, is remembered as Uthor of the High Tower. TWOIAF - THE REACH: OLDTOWNI believe Bran the Builder deliberately built the fifth tower entirely out of stone and to be the highest building in Westeros so it could be used as a beacon to warn when the Army of the Dead were marching south onto the Wall.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” - PSALM JOHN 14:6This passage is about Jesus' disciples wanting to know the way to get into Heaven, and Jesus answers that he is the way to his Father and Heaven, and if his disciples wish to go there, they must trust him and follow him.
She remembered Ser Willem dimly, a great grey bear of a man, half-blind, roaring and bellowing orders from his sickbed. The servants had lived in terror of him, but he had always been kind to Dany. He called her "Little Princess" and sometimes "My Lady," and his hands were soft as old leather. He never left his bed, though, and the smell of sickness clung to him day and night, a hot, moist, sickly sweet odor. That was when they lived in Braavos, in the big house with the red door. Dany had her own room there, with a lemon tree outside her window. After Ser Willem had died, the servants had stolen what little money they had left, and soon after they had been put out of the big house. Dany had cried when the red door closed behind them forever. - AGOT - DAENERYS IThe inconsistencies and unreliability of Daenerys' memories have been well discussed and written about in these subs. Most prominently, Ser Willem is described as as man with very soft hands despite being a master at arms for Aerys II for most of his life, and being able to roar and bellow orders from his sickbed despite his severe illness.
She fled from him, but only as far as the next open door. I know this room, she thought. She remembered those great wooden beams and the carved animal faces that adorned them. And there outside the window, a lemon tree! The sight of it made her heart ache with longing. It is the house with the red door, the house in Braavos. No sooner had she thought it than old Ser Willem came into the room, leaning heavily on his stick. "Little princess, there you are," he said in his gruff kind voice. "Come," he said, "come to me, my lady, you're home now, you're safe now." His big wrinkled hand reached for her, soft as old leather, and Dany wanted to take it and hold it and kiss it, she wanted that as much as she had ever wanted anything. Her foot edged forward, and then she thought, He's dead, he's dead, the sweet old bear, he died a long time ago. She backed away and ran. - ACOK - DAENERYS IVSome fans have theorised that this may not have been the real Willem Darry but someone else raising Daenerys, but this raises more inconsistencies as the Martells contest to Willem being present in signing the secret pact in Braavos with them and in the presence of the Sealord to wed Viserys to Arianne Martell once they were both of age.
Roro Uhoris, the Cobblecat’s cranky old master, used to claim that he could tell one port from another just by the way they smelled. Cities were like women, he insisted; each one had its own unique scent. Oldtown was as flowery as a perfumed dowager. Lannisport was a milkmaid, fresh and earthy, with woodsmoke in her hair. King’s Landing reeked like some unwashed whore. But White Harbor’s scent was sharp and salty, and a little fishy too. “She smells the way a mermaid ought to smell,” Roro said. “She smells of the sea.” - ADWD - DAVOS IIAnd Daenerys remembers the House with the Red Door best by the smells of perfume;
They wandered for half the morning. She saw a beautiful feathered cloak from the Summer Isles, and took it for a gift. In return, she gave the merchant a silver medallion from her belt. That was how it was done among the Dothraki. A birdseller taught a green-and-red parrot to say her name, and Dany laughed again, yet still refused to take him. What would she do with a green-and-red parrot in a khalasar? She did take a dozen flasks of scented oils, the perfumes of her childhood; she had only to close her eyes and sniff them and she could see the big house with the red door once more. When Doreah looked longingly at a fertility charm at a magician's booth, Dany took that too and gave it to the handmaid, thinking that now she should find something for Irri and Jhiqui as well. - AGOT - VIThe very first time we see Oldtown in AFFC, George notes that all of the buildings were built in stone;
Oldtown was built in stone, and all its streets were cobbled, down to the meanest alley. The city was never more beautiful than at break of day. West of the Honeywine, the Guildhalls lined the bank like a row of palaces. - AFFC - PROLOGUEAnd the House with the Red Door Daenerys remembers was also built in stone, considering it a 'great stone house';
The door loomed before her, the red door, so close, so close, the hall was a blur around her, the cold receding behind. And now the stone was gone and she flew across the Dothraki sea, high and higher, the green rippling beneath, and all that lived and breathed fled in terror from the shadow of her wings. She could smell home, she could see it, there, just beyond that door, green fields and great stone houses and arms to keep her warm, there. She threw open the door. - DAENERYS IXOldtown is also based in the Reach, a very fertile kingdom that could have plenty of lemon trees and warmer climate being south of King's Landing.
But this is not to say that Robert's reign has been completely untroubled. Six years after he was crowned, Balon Greyjoy unlawfully rose against his king—not for any harm done to him or to his people but merely out of wanton ambition. Lord Stannis Baratheon, Robert's middle brother, led the royal fleet against Lord Greyjoy, while King Robert himself rode at the head of a mighty host. Great feats of arms were performed by King Robert when Pyke was eventually taken and subdued. The king then made Balon Greyjoy—the pretender to the crown of the Iron Isles—bend the knee to the Iron Throne. And as assurance of his fealty, his only surviving son was taken hostage. Now the realm is at peace, and all that Robert's ascension to the throne once promised has come to pass. - TWOIAF - THE GLORIOUS REIGNAny hopes of a Targaryen restoration with the other kingdoms in Westeros rising up against Robert died in the Greyjoy Rebellion, which glorified Robert Baratheon as King even more and led to another ten years of peace in Westeros.
The woman in the lacquered wooden mask said in the Common Tongue of the Seven Kingdoms, "I am Quaithe of the Shadow. We come seeking dragons." "Seek no more," Daenerys Targaryen told them. "You have found them." - ACOK - DAENERYS INow of course, you may wonder how Malora can both be Quaithe and in Daenerys' presence in Essos while also being with her father at the top of the Hightower - but all the information about the two confirms that only Leyton has been locked at the top of his tower for ten years - not Malora, who is only said to be consulting spells with Leyton and has not been confirmed to have been up there with him for ten years, meaning that she could have traveled to Essos and back after meeting Daenerys and, upon realising that Daenerys was not following her warnings, sought to seek her out in a more personal and direct way without other individuals speaking over them - dreams.
"Remember. To go north, you must journey south. To reach the west, you must go east. To go forward you must go back, and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow." "Quaithe?" Dany sprung from the bed and threw open the door. Pale yellow lantern light flooded the cabin, and Irri and Jhiqui sat up sleepily. "Khaleesi?" murmured Jhiqui, rubbing her eyes. Viserion woke and opened his jaws, and a puff of flame brightened even the darkest corners. There was no sign of a woman in a red lacquer mask. "Khaleesi, are you unwell?" asked Jhiqui. "A dream." Dany shook her head. "I dreamed a dream, no more. Go back to sleep. All of us, go back to sleep." Yet try as she might, sleep would not come again. - ASOS - DAENERYS IIILike her father with Melisandre, Malora is using the powers of the glass candle to invoke visions into Daenerys' dreams and speak directly to her, guiding her and trying to protect her because Malora's father Leyton still cares for the Targaryen Princess.
"No. Hear me, Daenerys Targaryen. The glass candles are burning. Soon comes the pale mare, and after her the others. Kraken and dark flame, lion and griffin, the sun's son and the mummer's dragon. Trust none of them. Remember the Undying. Beware the perfumed seneschal." "Reznak? Why should I fear him?" Dany rose from the pool. Water trickled down her legs, and gooseflesh covered her arms in the cool night air. "If you have some warning for me, speak plainly. What do you want of me, Quaithe?" Moonlight shone in the woman's eyes. "To show you the way." - ADWD - DAENERYS IIAll of the people alluded to in this excerpt are individuals that Lord Leyton has learned about and grown to despise, both before and during the events of ASOIAF, and has Daenerys warned about them through Malora/Quaithe because he knows they are not loyal to the Targaryens;

2023.04.05 22:23 IStarScream Heavy Speculation: What caused "A Sovereign Alliance to Rot from Within"?
![]() | Hello! So, I've been very interested in two lines of dialogue that don't get much attention it seems, but that I've never felt have been given a satisfying answer. The first is the sword monument near Altus Highway Junction that reads: submitted by IStarScream to EldenRingLoreTalk [link] [comments] "The First Defense of Leyndell A sovereign alliance rots from within Traces yet remain of bloody conspiracy" The second is the message Blaidd leaves after you've killed Radahn: "There's a traitor taken care of. Onwards to Nokron, then. Go on, I'll catch up." The sword monument seems to imply that there was a short lived alliance during the early days of the Shattering which eventually fell apart. However, to my view, it couldn't have been simple difference of opinion due to the statement "Traces yet remain of a bloody conspiracy". Something happened behind the scenes that lead to the alliance failing. This post seeks to uncover that conspiracy. The message from Blaidd is interesting for a few reasons. At first, I thought it referred to Seluvis, but Seluvis remains alive at this point and only dies after you give Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade. The other confounding factor is that Blaidd is in the Forlorn Hound Evergaol at this point, but it's not unreasonable to assume he left this message before informing Iji what happened and then Iji imprisoned him. I've seen some speculation that Iji left this message and the (suspected) traitor in question is Blaidd, but I think it would be odd for Iji to leave this message to convince us Blaidd left it while nudge nudge wink winking that Blaidd is a traitor. The obvious option is then Radahn, due to his having held back the stars which govern Ranni's fate. However, Radahn's reason for holding back the stars is found in another sword monument: "The Starscourge Conflict Radahn alone holds Sellia secure And stands tall, to shatter the stars" This seems to imply that Radahn used his powers to prevent Sellia's destruction by a meteor shower, or some other event. Sellia has a deep connection to meteorites, so this wouldn't be surprising. "One of the glintstone sorceries that manipulates gravitational forces.We also find Lusat's Glintstone Staff in Sellia, and Lusat himself is not that far from the town itself. "The lineageof the Olivinus Conspectus began with the sorcerer Lusat, and its adherents continue his study of meteors." - Olivinus Glintstone CrownAdditionally, we have direct evidence of meteorites destroying a different city: "A manifestation of the power with which Astel leveled the Eternal City." - Meteorite of AstelWe even find another reference to this event in a night sorcery (which tend to connect to Sellia, and this one itself is found in a tower above Sellia: "Forbidden sorcery of Sellia, Town of Sorcery,I'm of the opinion that the Eternal City was destroyed as a result of their messing with sorcery, but regardless, I think it's clear that something like that probably happened in Sellia and Radahn stopped it by halting the movement of the stars. All that to say, I don't think having halted the stars could be seen as him being a traitor to Ranni as he did it for something completely disconnected from her. He could maybe unintentionally be a traitor, but I don't think that's what Blaidd's message means. So who is the traitor? Well the answer is... Radahn. "Didn't you just spend like 5 minutes explaining why it's not Radahn?" Well, you're half right. I don't think Radahn is a traitor because of his holding the stars. I do, however, think Radahn is a traitor, and it's connected to the sword monument from earlier. We're going to go down the rabbit hole, and analyze a great amount of possible connections. I don't even necessarily claim the conclusion of this post is true, but I think it can be put forth as an option. (Before beginning, I would like to give credit to this post for a big portion of the evidence in this post. The post was actually what first keyed me into this possibility, so uber props to them. I will be re-covering most of that evidence, so apologies for any redundancy if you do read the original post.) Part 1: Radagon and Rennala's ChildrenSo, Radagon and Rennala have 3 children: Rykard, Radahn, and Ranni. We know that at some point, Rykard and Ranni had some plan connected to fighting Maliketh, seemingly after the Night of Black Knives:"A slab of rock engraved with traces of the Rune of DeathAdditionally, there is a portrait of Radahn in Rykard's manor: https://preview.redd.it/tevsd69ub3sa1.png?width=701&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=04caa52725d4e79490debff0cbc253b182738fe9 We also have another connection between these two: Abductor Virgins, which are linked to Rykard by their serpents, their great presence at the Volcano Manor, and there being one in Raya Lucaria (the academy originally run by Rykard's mother) which transports the player to the Volcano Manor. We also find one in Redmane Castle, implying Radahn may have been given or borrowed at least one Abductor Virgin from Rykard. (This is confounded by the Abductor Virgins in the fortified Manor, and I still need to try and think about their presence there. Perhaps, given their connection to the bridge we can access from the Weeping Peninsula teleporter trap, they are there to route anyone trying to enter Leyndell and bring them to Rykard.) So, even beyond their familial relationships, Ranni had direct plans with Rykard, and Rykard seemed to be helping Radahn in Caelid. There is actually more to link Rykard and Radahn, but first we'll look at other people connected to at least one of the Radagon and Rennalla kids. Part 2: Torrent's Former MasterWith the announcement of the DLC, we seemingly finally got an answer to the question of Torrent's former master's identity.https://preview.redd.it/489k5uotd3sa1.png?width=221&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=74d668411add5a28c9c2c6f581ae62a03a237f0b Miquella appears to be the person on Torrent, and this would give credence to him being Torrent's former master. Given who we learn about Torrent's former master from, this is rather interesting: "Ah. As I had hoped. I was entrusted this, for thee. By Torrent's former master." - Ranni the WitchSo, Ranni and Miquella knew each other enough for her to be entrusted with giving Torrent's new master a spirit summoning bell. We have a bit more evidence of their connection, given that there is a Miquella Lily in the large courtyard with all the hands, and in the small courtyard leading up to Loretta's boss room. Oh, let us not also forget that this spirit we fight is of Loretta, a knight who has pledged herself now to Miquella, as she believes the Haligtree is the best hope of salvation for the Albinaurics. Albinaurics which we can find throughout Liurnia, many of which are in and behind the Caria Manor. So it does not seem outside the realm of possibility that Ranni and Miquella were connected beyond their Empyreanhood and having the same father. So Ranni is in some way connected to Miquella. For the sake of this post, we'll make a simple assumption that perhaps she supported his efforts to help the Albinaurics, but there are several possibilities. At most, we just need to know they had some collaboration. We'll now go back to that last connection between Rykard and Radahn. Part 3: Rykard's Involvement in the Caelid CampaignSo, recall back that our connector between Rykard and Radahn was the Abductor Virgin in Redmane Castle. However, there is another one roaming near the southern cliff of the Dragonbarrow, and guards the entrance to the Abandoned Cave. In here we find several startling things. First we find a defunct Abductor Virgin.https://preview.redd.it/d9dfs4njm3sa1.png?width=1069&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=137db3c4a7966a3dc5951670b6453bbc9a26e0a3 As we continue through rot infested cave, we find piles and piles of destroyed Abductor Virgins, and are forced to fight Rot Miranda flowers and the Mushroom clad Rot worshippers. It's likely that the ones responsible for the state of these Abductor Virgins are the Cleanrot Knights who act as the boss of this cave. So, the simple assumption is that the Cleanrot Knights fought these Abductor Virgins, who were more of the ones given to Radahn by Rykard. But there are even more specific connections to Rykard in this cave. "Arrow carved to resemble a flying snake. Used in tandem with the Serpent Bow.All three of these items are connected with snakes, which seems to be an interesting fact given Rykard's connection to snakes. We might want to say that perhaps these are unrelated snake assassins, but besides the fact that Rykard is practically the only character connected to snakes, we also know of a depiction of a flying snake somewhere else on the map. https://preview.redd.it/la9c5acio3sa1.png?width=659&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=e85056686dc90720dde14b01d137453c57fee4be Throughout the Volcano Manor, a snake with wings is depicted in statues. Now it is true that the Serpent Arrow doesn't show wings on these flying snakes: https://preview.redd.it/l8cvmphpo3sa1.png?width=401&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=2f4d1515a45f36c212e902e92e5a3093618153c3 But I still think we don't have enough counter reason to not relate all of these items and images to each other through Rykard. So, if this cave has links to Rykard, it seems that he had a slightly more direct connection to the conflict between Malenia and Radahn. But why does that matter? We'll now return to the original sword monument. Part 4: A Bloody ConspiracyThe sovereign alliance described is likely one which was made up of the thrones in Morgott's chamber, along with Morgott himself: Rykard, Godrick, Radahn, Malenia, Miquella, and Ranni. However, at some point, this alliance fell apart. We know that Godrick (and Godefroy) were involved in the First Defense of Leyndell, where Godefroy was imprisoned by Dragon Knight Kristoff. But obviously whatever happened affected all the members of the alliance. So what was the conspiracy referred to in the second half of the sword monument? Here's where the big, crazy speculation begins: Look back at the descriptions of the Serpent Arrow and Serpent Bow and what the assassins who employ them are called: Formless Serpents. We have another character given this same word in their title."Raise the sacred spear and pierce the body of the Formless Mother." - Mohgwyn's Sacred SpearNow, before you dismiss this theory outright, I agree with you. This seems rather out there. I do think there are more things to link the two beyond the simple word "Formless", however, so let's look at that first. First, let's look at something else that appears in Volcano Manor. We find an Omenkiller working for Rykard who has aided him in his inquisition, standing before the burning bodies of numerous victims whose crime was the heretical opposition of Rykard's blasphemy. https://preview.redd.it/t8nifdh6t3sa1.png?width=639&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=84d80171acdabfd42e2b1d5dbe68c76e2fa34460 We also find Albinaurics wearing the Black Dumpling in a few places in Volcano Manor. "Mask forced on a victim's head to lend torture an extra degree of cruelty. It magnifies one's fears and makes them acutely aware of all forms of pain.https://preview.redd.it/ej0u1o0eu3sa1.png?width=708&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=f28806fe2d7f3acb158d4977a92028fc1c74ef34 So the Black Dumpling is used by torturers, a role Rykard likely filled himself given his role as a member of the inquisition for the Golden Order. "Praetor Rykard is the Lord of the Volcano Manor on Mt. Gelmir. He is a ruthless justiciar who commands a company of inquisitors, reviled for his serpentine demeanour." - Gideon OfnirAnd there's another area where we can find an Omenkiller near Albinaurics who have been forced to wear Black Dumplings. Just the three of us. You, me, and the brick wall that fell between us. In Leyndell, near the entrance to the sewers leading to the Shunning Grounds, there is an Omenkiller, right on the other side of a collapsed wall where we can find several Albinaurics wearing the Black Dumpling. It's possible that, if Omenkillers aid the inquisition, this one's presence here is connected to the Albinaurics wearing the Dumpling. Additionally, if Rykard himself was here at some point, it would give him a point where he could have come into contact with Mohg: the well in the area with the Albinaurics leads to the Shunning Grounds. Regardless, we have more reason to believe that the Omenkillers aid in the torture. https://preview.redd.it/5xkrk6a4x3sa1.png?width=1744&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=084c17f51b40d7f66c0c4e54fc86c60c8d3eee53 In the room where we find the Albinauric Mask and Staff (on the corpse in the image), we find an Omenkiller, implying he was the torturer for our poor frog friend. This building itself has several Albinaurics in torture devices and in Black Dumplings, so it seems we know at least one culprit for that. But why is Rykard torturing these Albinaurics? Well, the Black Dumpling is only used when "the torturer no longer seeks answers." Did Rykard get the answer he wanted, or simply decide that when no answer could be coaxed to simply condemn the victim to endless suffering? Well regardless, there's a reason we already see someone attacking Albinaurics for the information they hold. "Foul tarnished, what do you want? I told the all-hearing brute. That I possess no such medallion. Or have you come to take more from me? Was my other half not enough?" - Latenna, the AlbinauricGideon sent an Omenkiller (hmm) and a Depraved Perfumer to attack the Albinauric village to find the location of their medallions to gain access to the Haligtree. Interestingly enough, the Depraved Perfumers themselves are linked to the Volcano Manor. As I said in this post, the Depraved Perfumers use a symbol of snakes coiling themselves around the Erdtree, a symbol connected to Rykard's blasphemy. An even more direct connection is the fact that we find the ashes of the Depraved Perfumer Carmaan in a locked room in the Volcano Manor's front area. "Depraved perfumers practice their art for themselves alone. Carmaan was a notably formidable perfumer whose strength rivaled that of heroes, and it is said that he was in search of a secret physick of revivification." - Depraved Perfumer CarmaanSo the two people sent by Gideon are from groups who occasionally have ties to Rykard. But we know Gideon is interested in the Volcano Manor as well. We find the Eye Surcoat in Rykard's chamber after defeating him. "The insignia emblazoned on the front marks out the wearer as the eyes and ears of Sir Gideon the All-Knowing." - Eye SurcoatBased on who wears this item, we can surmise what it's doing here. In Limgrave, we can be invaded by Recusant Henricus, a member of the Volcano Manor who has the Eye Surcoat. It is likely that he joined the Recusants to spy on the Volcano Manor, and whether he was tricked into meeting Rykard as we are or he was simply found out, we find his armor only after he has been killed and eaten. But what specifically was Gideon trying to learn from the Volcano Manor? It could simply be that he wanted to keep tabs on Rykard's actions, as he was a shardbearer and a threat to the Roundtable Hold. But if Rykard was torturing the Albinaurics for some reason, and Gideon was looking for information about the Albinaurics to find the Haligtree, perhaps Gideon was trying to piggyback off Rykard's efforts. If this is the case, then it would imply that Rykard's goal in torturing the Albinaurics was the same as Gideon ordering the attack on the Albinauric village: to find out information on the Haligtree. So what would Rykard's goal be in trying to get this information? Well, Miquella would be a threat to his power, and would also be creating a new tree when Rykard still hadn't even gotten rid of the old one. So there's the simple explanation of just trying to prevent Miquella from succeeding for his own reasons. But if we entertain the possibility of Rykard having some connection to Mohg, what might it imply? Well for starters, if Rykard knew Mohg's intentions for Miquella, it would solve the "Miquella's Haligtree is the Erdtree 2" problem, at least temporarily. Additionally, it would possibly explain something interesting about the Albinauric Mask. The mask is of a second generation Albinauric. The reference to godskin is interesting, given their presence in the Volcano Manor This might not seem too out of the ordinary, except that in the Volcano Manor, there are only first generation Albinaurics. But we do know of a place with a lot of second generation Albinaurics but no first generation ones. Credit to Zullie the Witch for the image So perhaps Rykard found no use for the second generation Albinaurics and Mohg requested them. There are a few things that could actually point to how this could have come about. Cut dialogue for Thops says that the second generation Albinaurics can't speak. "The curse withered the legs of the old, and silenced the tongues of the Frogs." - Sorcerer ThopsI want to say there's an in game item with this fact as well, but I can't find it. As such, take this bit of speculation with a grain of salt, though given the amount of salt you should already be taking for the rest of this theory you might be at a health risk. If it is the case the second generation Albinaurics can't speak, they're not much use to an inquisitor. So Rykard would have had no need to keep them around. But if he was working with Mohg, Mohg would have had good reason to ask him not to dispose of the mute Albinaurics. The answer is found in the item we find with the Albinauric Mask. "Short staff with a blue glintstone embedded. Wiedled by the Albinaurics of old.The Albinauric staff scales with Arcane, and tells us that Albinaurics have an innate arcaneness. As all of Mohg's blood incantations scale on Arcane (as do weapons related to his dynasty), there's no better group to follow him than the Albinaurics. The picture would be one where Rykard has no need for some of them and Mohg says "hey bro, I mean, I could use 'em." But now we move onto another result of if Rykard worked with Mohg. The thing that makes Radahn a traitor, and what rotted the alliance. Rykard and Radahn helped kidnap Miquella. Now, there is a possibility that they had kidnapped Miquella and Mohg stole him from them opportunistically, but regardless, it's a possibility that they were in someway responsible for what happened. Is there any proof for any of this? Well, first, we can look at the map. https://preview.redd.it/jc7xgz55c4sa1.png?width=1264&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=e8942092c7139b87aafcf24a132ce94e483e49b9 Sellia and Radahn's arena are right over Mohg's territory. https://preview.redd.it/d36s97m0e4sa1.png?width=589&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=a8e2680f14f8a9120ca94fa086a8ae968d8e9ff1 The Abandoned Cave from earlier is in the same spot as the well which leads down to Siofra. Additionally, we know of a relation between soldiers who fought in Caelid and those connected to the Haligtree (beyond just the Cleanrot knights). Commanders O'Neil and Niall may in some way be connected to this. O'Neil remains in Caelid, but Niall is in Castle Sol guarding the other half of the Haligtree Medallion. Perhaps, rather than kidnapping Mohg, Radahn's soldiers had stolen the Medallion and baited Malenia away. (It's unclear to me whether Niall/O'neill work for Radahn or Malenia, but both work as they can bring up the possibility of the Medallion having been stolen, whether it having been stolen by them or from them.) So perhaps the conspiracy that undid the alliance was Rykard and Radahn either kidnapping Miquella or doing something that resulted in his having been kidnapped. And if that's the case, and we accept Ranni was working with Miquella, it would explain why Radahn was a traitor beyond unrelatedly holding the stars. Regardless, even if we don't accept all of these pieces of information, I think some of these can be believed individually. I definitely think Gideon was spying on Rykard to learn about the Haligtree, which wasn't something I had even thought of until I had already written half this post. I'm leaning toward thinking Rykard helped Mohg due to the Albinauric Mask and Albinauric Staff, but I understand that it is a reach. The main thing that relatively doubtful on is Ranni working with Miquella, but it does have implications I think make sense which will be for another post. Regardless, I'm interested to see pushback or modifications, or just to see everyone's opinions on all this. Thanks for reading! * BONUS *I have a few bits to link Mohg to Rykard that I wasn't entirely sure how to put in or that I thought were tenuous, so if you want to see them, I'll put them here.First is that the Japanese in the sword monument refers to the "bloody conspiracy" as "血の陰謀". I believe, and could definitely be wrong, that this phrase has some ambiguity and could also be read as "conspiracy of blood" and that ambiguity might be deliberate. If it is, then it could have been meant to be something that points to Mohg being behind what happened. Second is another follower of Mohg. "Of the surgeons abducted by the Lord of Blood none were able to tame the accursed blood.Varré and other war surgeons were abducted by Mohg, and died after coming into contact with the cursed blood at the center of Mohg's religion (besides Varré.) This connection would be that perhaps they were abducted by Abductor Virgins. There's further proof of this, in the location of the Dagger Talisman being in the Volcano Manor. https://preview.redd.it/ozjdmf1li4sa1.png?width=288&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=f488690e226dd484ebe1410d6e8185841bcfeb2d Given the frequent references to the war surgeons being mercy killers, it's even possible that the ones who were kidnapped were taken during the assault on Mt. Gelmir, given how horrible the battle was. Plus it could explain why Varré is so hateful of the Two Fingers, as he could be blaming them and Morgott for the things he had to go through in the conflict. Third is that the red fire in the Volcano Manor is vaguely reminiscent of Bloodflame, but that's not really much. Possibly a fourth is that the Abductor Virgins in the Fortified Manor are at the foot of the Divine Bridge that leads to the Isolated Divine Tower, which holds Malenia's and likely would hold Miquella's Great Rune so perhaps they're there to catch Miquella if he goes there or any of his servants for information. The last piece is that Patches sells Margit's Shackle, and it seems like from his dialogue regarding Rya that he's been working for the Recusants even when we first meet him. If that's the case, perhaps the Recusants were keeping Margit's Shackle around similarly to the Blasphemous Claw, and got it from Mohg who would have had access to it. Patches probably just stole it. This one isn't necessarily proof, but it could still point to the connection. Also I like the idea of Patches just stealing something that would be really important to their attempts to overthrow the Erdtree and just selling it to a random Tarnished for only 5000 souls. Well, that's all for now. Edit: Well I edited a typo and it screwed up all the images so RIP. |
