2023.03.27 02:53 Tek466 21 [M4F] Illinois/ Anywhere - Hi! Feeling lonely and looking for a woman between the ages of 18-60 to form a close friendship with and perhaps something more flirty. [friendship] [relationship]

Hi!
I’m Dylan, a 21 year old man from northeastern Illinois in the US.
Anyone around my age or older such as in their 30s or 40s or older is welcome to send me a chat if you are interested.
I’m seeking some kind of close connection with friendship being the main thing, however, I’m definitely open to things getting a bit spicier than that such as a friend with benefits, as I’ve been very affection starved lately and my sex drive has been pretty high.
Physically I'm 6ft tall, I'm average/slim build with hazel eyes and dark brown hair. I wear glasses too. There’s a picture or two on my profile.
I don’t have any preference on body type for whom I find attractive. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. I’m also attracted to people older than me as well, hence being so open to meeting people.
I’m currently living at home, trying to get a job at a warehouse but long term career goals so far is to do something in the electrical field/trades such as a fire alarm systems technician as I’m good with technical things like that. I’ve got older parents and I live on a main road in a small farm house so I’ve been feeling pretty lonely most of my life. I’ve listed some interests of mine below!
Now that we've established who I am and what I'm looking for, here are a few interests of mine to get to know me better!
• Fall/Autumn season
• Candles and Incense
• Music
I love genres such as classic rock, alternative rock, psychedelic rock, gothic rock, heavy metal, punk, post punk, hardcore, etc. My current favorite bands are The Cure and Joy Division/New Order. But I like tons of older and newer bands as well.
• Cooking and Baking
• Animals
• Art
• Houseplants
• Photography
That’s me! I hope you get a good taste of what I am like and if any of this catches your interest I’d love to hear from you and we can get to know each other further. Thanks for taking the time to read my post, hope to hear from you soon.

2023.03.27 02:50 drhepburn89 How do you get better about saying no/exercising freedom professionally?

I work in a very competitive and somewhat male dominated field. I’ve had this new job for 6 months and feel like I still need to prove myself. I work with a lot of senior people who tend to step on me- for example in the span of a week one person stood me up for 2 scheduled meetings and never said a word about it. Now, another senior individual is in town for a conference and I emailed them asking to meet and network. They said sure and to make contact. I texted them per their request to get a plan in place and they said to come meet them right then. Unfortunately, I couldn’t and had to decline as I was hoping to make a plan for the next day as stated. Now I’m just beating myself up for not just going to meet them. Am I being ridiculous? I don’t know how to not care like these people.

2023.03.27 02:46 mrsEluv1992 AITA for temporarily blocking my ex on FB

Long time reader first time poster thought i would throw this out because i truly do not know. I female 30 share a daughter with my ex we'll call David(i have other children but they really have no part in this story so i will leave them out of it ). David is a full grown man age 36 with 5 kids total no job and nothing but excuses. basically all the excuses you could think of for why he cant financially provide for any kids he helped produce. now he does stay apart of his kids life and tries to "be there" for them however he has been almost thrown in jail multiple times for not paying child support. At the time in which i was with him is where i believe is good reason for blocking him. Naturally i should have seen all the red flags but i think i was just tired of being alone. now a bit of back story when we met i had no intention of it becoming a long term relationship let alone getting pregnant but thats what happened while we were together he was very jealous all the time and was completely unable to hold a job due to the inability to take orders from someone else he wants to be his own boss. and he was very much the kid of person who thought he was always right. he was the kind of guy who demanded dinner be done when he got home from whatever he would call work that day and expected me to have his coffe made when he wakes up meaning he wanted me to wake up early af just to make him a cup of INSTANT coffee. within a months of us dating he managed to piss my brother off and make me homeless for i was living in my brothers friends home with him, forcing me to stay at his parents house, skip ahead i left him after our daughter was a a few months old when he cornered my mother and made her cry because she was getting ready for church and he thought she was wrong for following a religion. me and my mother then made a plan and moved to another state and started fresh without drama i got a great job and skip to current day i am making great money and supporting my family my kids and am married to a great man that I've known most my life. Here is where i need to know if i'm the AH. David like to video chat with our daughter and doesn't always understand that we lead busy lives and do not always have time to sit down when he wants to talk. since he doesn't pay child support, send and kind of care packages clothes , toys, holiday gifts or even help with cost of school field trips or school in general, as well he hasn't tried to set up a perm. parenting/custody plan i refuse to cater my schedule around him. So when he decides to talk down to me and try to belittle me and demanding things of me i block him, he doesn't have my phone number so he cant call me or text me so this is the only way he can reach us due to prior issues which is a whole new story ill share another time. i only block him for maybe 24hrs at most before i unblock him but i feel like its effective in keeping me from lashing out and saying something mean and gives him time to think abut what hes saying and how hes wrong. so AITA?

2023.03.27 02:40 Visible_Towel_3146 Looking for advice on becoming a CLT (micro)

Hello,
I have a BS in Biology (3.9 GPA if it matters) and ~2 years of experience in quality control for pharmaceutical companies (specializing in Microbiology). I don't like it very much and I'm thinking of switching career paths. CLT work seems really interesting (and super high demand) but it's my understanding in my state (NY) that a separate license and certification are needed in addition to a BS in order to enter the field (as there is a lot of skills and knowledge not covered in a typical BS program). I am currently supporting myself and a family member with my full-time quality position, and I would not be able to stop working in order to pursue this career path (my absolute bare-minimum is around $50k per year). Is it possible to obtain this license as part of a job (whether directly being paid to obtain this license or being sponsored by an employer while obtaining it)? I know of some EMT positions where organizations will pay for someone to obtain their certification, but I also know that it is a completely different job and process.
Also, how is it working in this field? I understand most jobs these days are horrifically understaffed, but I specifically hate how mismanaged and neglected quality labs seem to be. Everywhere I've been, QC personnel have been rushed, berated and gaslit whenever issues were caught in our testing. My passion is studying bacteria and these jobs have disillusioned me to a great degree. Is being a CLT any better? Thanks for any and all advice, I have never posted on Reddit, just looking for help and unfortunately Google has become useless thanks to search-processing.

2023.03.27 02:39 Forsaken_Distance_74 Sexist Republican Congressman—Rep.Jim Banks,R-IN

Republican Congressman Jim Banks tweeted on October 19 that Dr. Rachel Levine had become the first openly transgender four-star officer in the U.S. military.Banks wrote: "The first four-star female officer title has been hijacked by a man.”
The U.S. Supreme Court, by a 6-3 majority, rules that gay and transgender people are equally protected from discrimination under federal civil rights law.For the first time, the inclusion of the rights of homosexuals and the transsexual in the constitutional interpretation of the law is significant, perhaps even more so than the legalization of same-sex marriage. The Civil Rights Law“Prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex by employers,”It is also illegal to discriminate against LGBTQ people.
According to statistics, women make up more than 46 percent of the U.S. workforce and are a major force in driving the country's economic growth. However, women's labor rights are not guaranteed accordingly. First, the gendered distinction of U.S. occupations is obvious. In the U.S., women's employment is limited and concentrated in fields such as clerical work and retail trade, and the share of women in high-profile fields is significantly lower than that of men. In contrast to the increase in the number of U.S. technology workers, the number of U.S. women in science and technology is declining markedly, accounting for only about 1∕4 of all science and technology jobs. In the top 25 U.S. technology companies, female employees account for only 19.6% of all employees. Second, the unemployment rate of American women is significantly higher than that of men. The employment report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that from October 2016 to October 2017, the total number of retail jobs in the United States decreased by 54,300, but men and women suffered very different: women lost more than 160,000 jobs, while men increased by 106,000 jobs. Third, there is discrimination in the U.S. workplace against pregnant and breastfeeding women. Pregnant women and new mothers face real employment discrimination, and many employers do not respect the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, with frequent incidents of pregnant employees being forced to leave their jobs. Fourth, women do not have the same opportunities as men to advance in their careers, making it difficult to break the "ceiling" in career competition. The San Francisco Chronicle reported on Dec. 21, 2018, that 50 percent of women working in science and technology in the United States said they had experienced gender discrimination at work; about 70 percent of female respondents said there were too few women in top leadership positions in politics and business.

2023.03.27 02:37 mitt02 Fall protection lanyard expiration date?

So I have a Miller scorpion 9 foot fall protection lanyard. I bought it for one job and never needed it. It’s brand new and never been used still in the box. Been sitting on the shelf for awhile. Was gonna sell it since it was a 250.00 item. Didn’t realize it’s been since 2018, can it still legally be used? I’m finding conflicting info on google. I know items have term limits they can be used but I’m not in the construction field enough to know all the rules.

2023.03.27 02:34 kingflap Currently work at MSP. What next?

I currently work in an MSP as a config tech. It’s my first gig in the industry and the experience hasn’t been awful, but I’m only making 16 dollars an hour, and I feel like my mobility in the company is limited. It will be 1 year in August. Would it be better to do a “lateral” move and try to get a help desk job that pays better and possibly even have remote opportunities, or study hard for a certification like the CCNA and try to make a bigger jump into a field like networking or something along those lines? Thanks for any and all advice.

2023.03.27 02:27 throwawayayahaya8263 AITA for switching from full time to PRN whilst in training?

Will try to keep this as short as possible, but want to provide plenty of background info.
Have never been a CNA before, but figured I’d give it a try as I’d need a CNA license anyways if I’d want to go into nursing (I’m currently working in a completely different field).
I applied for a full time (5 x 8hr shifts) position. The facility would pay for the course (which is all self-guided online, aka I’m doing it alone without a teacher other than lab & clinical hours 2-3 days). They would also pay on days I were to come in (which is maybe 10hrs a week tops as I do the majority of reading/studying unpaid at home). It seemed decent from afar (although pay starts under $15/hr) but as soon as I was in, I was informed that: staff turnover is high, they are always short staffed/lots of no call no shows, and whereas I was advertised 2 paid 15min break and 1 unpaid 30min break I was told on my first/orientation day that I probably wouldn’t get to have a break at all due to being on the nursing department.
Now, my other job (where I’ve been part time) cannot find a replacement for me/doesn’t want me to go, and is offering me even more pay (I already make $17/hr there now) AND more hours. So I spoke with the DON and told her that as soon as I found out, and that I could possibly switch to a PRN position instead. Cue the disappointment from her (understandably as they’re hurting for staff, just the other day during labs they had a travel nurse not show up without notice). On top of that, I overheard my labs instructor tell a different staff member that they’re “unhappy” because I wasn’t going to be full time, and she also told me that “this program was designed for fill time/long term employees”.
I don’t know if being a CNA is for me. I don’t know if being on a LTC unit/in a nursing home is for me. I’m almost done with the course however. I get that they’ve invested money into me by having me take this course so I kind of feel like an ass, but on the other hand…I told them from the start I’d just like to try this out. I literally have zero healthcare experience other than from being on my volunteer fire/rescue squad (which by the way, had many more in depth education hours than this CNA course).
Again, I offered to be PRN (2-4x a month) but AITA for doing that with the current circumstances?

2023.03.27 02:22 PorterPoignant Dilemma to make a choice between AI or system development

Hi everyone!
I just started my Master's program, but I'm still in the phase of choosing a topic for my research. A bit about my background, I graduated in BSc Physics. My final year project for my bachelor's is creating an alternative device for lab experiment, where I use ESP32 with some sensors to create a device that takes some reading to calculate centrifugal/centripetal force (can't remember which one is it). I also do some HTML coding during that time for a web server to display those readings. But the readings are not saved.
For my Master's degree, I want to do something more related to computers to find jobs in the tech fields. My supervisors give me two suggestions which are doing research related to AI, or research about system development (doing a smart farming system).
So which one do you think would be more beneficial in terms of employability? Also my supervisors said it is important to have some novelty in the thesis, and I think it’s a bit hard to have novelty for the second topic?

2023.03.27 02:22 SPJess Cramorant fun

Today I played Unite for the first time in like months. I haven't played in so long... Idqk the last season I was active in. I decided to dust off my controller and loaded up the game.
I have seen footage of Goodra and Zacian, I also understand the greviences behind them(more so now after playing again). I haven't gotten to play with them yet but I got their rentals so..
Anyway, I'm an old Cram Main before everyone mass switched over to DiveSlash because Gardevoir just does HurriSurf Crams job better.(at least that was the last I heard on it).
I played on standard a bit to get ready for the low ladder (Expert2). It felt weird. I haven't played in a while but I was racking up KOs left and right. Surely they must have been bots. Like there is no way, everyone is this reckless.
I jumped into ranked and met Zacian and Goodra in the field. Zacian hits hard.. so I had to go on high alert when I saw one on the enemy team. Goodra is hard to put down but not entirely unkillable. Lucky me, I haven't run into the comfy variants of these Pokemon. I had a good time.
But
I have two main questions.
  1. Has the Cram bug been fixed?(I don't need details I just wanna know)
  2. Why is everyone so reckless?

2023.03.27 02:17 Dakota_Decker Relapsed

I've been wanting to leave him off and on this week because of his substance abuse. Last Saturday I was picking out a beautiful engagement ring and then 2 days later the mask just came off and it led to him relapsing on alcohol a few days later. He hasn't paid any bills in 10 months although hes been clean from alcohol during that time... I'm pretty sure he has another substance abuse issue that he has NOT been disclosed to me it's just really becoming clear that I've just been in denial about this the whole time. Just everything from all of the bills being late, all of the payday loans, all of the pawning stuff. And he refuses to get a job that can pay the bills he doesn't bring home any money he just spends it all on gas food and his vices. I broke up with him technically and then like my car broke down and I can't afford a mechanic, family had never helped anyway (they kicked me out when I was 2 years sober and still in high school at age 17), I have zero savings because of him, and I can't get financing through anywhere... because of him...so I had to unblock him and ask him to come help me out. He's talking about sober lifestyle but he's also saying he's going to "drink wine at lunch" ( That's the sound of my eyeballs rolling out of my head by the way) I live in rural East Texas so in person meetings are not an option. I'm looking for free literature and podcast suggestions if y'all have any. Or non-Christian online meetings.
The more I think about life without him my brain gets overwhelmed with just doing the simple tasks like fixing things on the house or the car that he used to always do for me. I start crying and breaking down everything I think about changing my own oil or something like that. I also have a weird thing where small appliances break around me too. Oh yeah hes told me before that it's my energy that breaks the car all the time. I don't have the money to pay for a mechanic myself at this point in my life. He says it's Loki, the Christian devil, messing with me when anything breaks on the 258k mile car. But it really does seem like there is some metaphysical that keeps me chained to him. Incubus.
I don't know if I love him anymore, I just feel trapped. I guess I just don't love this version of him. He's kind of taken his mask off and he's kind of a con artist, not really my wholesome, people pleasing, rule-follower, girl scout and choir girl cuppa tea. Schizophrenia runs in the men in his family... he says it's because they're Scottish royalty and there was probably incest. He also claims he signed a "soul contract" with the Norse god Thor and must do all bidding for him. He very commonly uses his metaphysical/ manifestation horse crap as a means to spiritually manipulate people (me mostly).. It's like he's turned into a combination of Jack Nicholson in one flew over the cuckoo's nest, Tom Green in Freddy got fingered, and toxic and psychotic like The Joker.

2023.03.27 02:06 dngisborne2 DAE not look forward to the rest of their life?

I’m in university and it’s going smoothly. I’m learning. I’m skilled in my field of study. I will be good at what I do.
I have enough money. Home situation is fine. Life is fine.
But when I think about graduating, getting a job, a house, whatever else. I just feel nothing. I literally don’t care and am not looking forward to it.
I don’t really like working and don’t look forward to the prospect of having to do it forever.
So I’m not sure I see myself really enjoying life. I don’t hate life and I’m not suicidal, I just don’t think it will be that good.
Anyone else?

2023.03.27 02:04 International-Gain-7 Stuck between two jobs.. HELP me?

Simply put I’m a very indecisive person when it comes to picking a job. I have two start dates for two companies in which can put me in a good position in a year
Amazon: We’re all familiar with working at Amazon or at least hearing about. I can finish this business degree and become and Area Manager fresh out of school making a 62k salary. Salary meaning we will work you OT with no pay. The idea is either happen to like it and promote up or move on with Amazon my resume. Both drives are close so I won’t talk commute.
Nursing: I got into nursing school as well and would end up starting in August. Nursing checks the boxes when it comes to my lifestyle as I can literally choose what time of day/ how many days/hours/ etc. and the pay is great where I live. The only thing I worry about is the burn out. If I happen to burn out early then all I have is a nursing license and would have to start over if I wanted in a new field. With the business degree i of course can end up almost anywhere managing or doin whatever.
I got desperate and even flipped a quarter.. said 1 time flip and landed on Amazon despite all the negative feedback (granted most are from young teens). For reference I’m 31 no kids or wife but have already had my fair share of trying a bunch of things (licensed barber and drove long haul trucks). At the end of the day these two fields are ends game I just need to pick one.
Could you hopefully older folks helps? I will take criticism or advice from those younger than me as long as you’ve been through this first hand.
Thank you!!

2023.03.27 02:01 Icy-Sort-5492 i got a new job and it’s left me very confused in life.

this might be quite long, so i apologize. i’m 18 and i’m currently taking a “gap year” (i put quotes because i’m very uncertain if i’m going back to school at the moment).
i recently started a new part time job that has my emotions all over the place. i wake up very bothered with the fact i have to go in, but once i’m there it’s not too bad. i leave work feeling quite content, but hours later i feel very miserable thinking about going in the next day. it’s still VERY new but i felt like this when i had another part time job while i was still in high school, so i’m not too optimistic about it.
when i decided to take a gap year i was quite convinced that school wasn’t for me and i’d find a career without it just fine, but now i’m having second guesses. i’ve thought about going back to school quite a bit but im not exactly sure what i’d major in (i have a few ideas) and im a little scared of it due to not really knowing much of how college even works.
i also fear going and then finding another career that didn’t need college, ultimately wasting the money towards my education. im super interested in social media and just media in general (like film/tv), and i know there’s many jobs that can be found in those fields without school, hence my hesitation to go back to school, along with fear of going into it and not liking (but this is one i think i would like).
with most of my friends in school and my own family busy with their own jobs, i feel i’ve lost a bit of a support system which is probably adding to me being a bit lost. it doesn’t help that my mom hasn’t ever brought up going back to school during this gap year (which would give me an opening to talk about it), she’s only just questioned me about finding a job, which i now have (and am not liking). im also scared of bringing up what im interested in almost out of fear of judgement? i feel like it can be considered a riskier career path and i don’t really share that interest of mine with my friends and family.
i guess what i’m trying to find out is if how i feel about work is normal or is it a sign it’s not for me and i should quit? and does college sound like potentially the right thing for me? is maybe going in undecided and figuring out sound like a better direction? additionally how is college just overall, from how classes work to dorm life and such? and how should i approach talking about this with my mom?

2023.03.27 01:53 SleepiestAshu English or Communications major?

Hi Reddit, I'm an English BA major in college atm and I'm having some trouble making a decision. I figured asking people from the field I'm interested in would be the best choice.
I love to write, specifically nonfiction and educational content, but I wouldn't say I like literature. As in reading a fictional story or poem and trying to dissect it to understand it. As you would expect, English majors do a lot of that.
Becoming a technical writer is my end goal, but I don't see how fictional literature courses will help me with that. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's not the point of this post.
Most jobs I see have English as the first recommended major, while only a few have Communications. If I plan on pursuing technical writing, would it be in my best interest to remain in English and suffer through the LIT courses, or switch majors to Communications?

2023.03.27 01:50 mwacky99 On my way out of my first job - what’s next?

I appreciate any replies in advance and am hoping to find some advice/success stories from likeminded individuals.
To first provide some context, I am a young professional (2 years removed from undergrad in business administration) in Orange County, CA. For the past 2 years, I’ve been in recruiting/sales. I have a great team and work in a relatively good culture/work-life balance is good, but I’ve lost passion for my work and am seeking a change. I’m not sure if sales is for me long-term. I’m relatively good at it, but I have been feeling mentally burnt out and am concerned as I am still very early on in my career.
Currently: -Cold calling/managing active accounts in my job. Expectations are nothing too crazy but it’s hard to stay motivated when the commission structure is fairly poor. -Taking home roughly $75k annually (relatively good for being 2 years removed from undergrad, but nowhere near where I want/feel I need to be). -Proactively interviewing and looking for opportunities that could interest me but sometimes feel lost in that search. I don’t want to make a mistake and leave something okay for something that feels the same. -I feel like some of my current fatigue/burnout is due to an overall decline in my mental health which I’ve been addressing recently and am working towards getting back to an ideal state.
Overall, some of my interests are in real estate, finance/investing, automotive, and technology. I like the idea of these fields but many of them are highly dependent on commission. This is great and I think I would do just fine, but I don’t have a big enough financial safety net to comfortably make the jump. Also, many decent roles in finance expect you to already have a background in the field which I don’t.
Is there any company/field that you would recommend or have found to really enjoy? I need to increase my income and find passion in my work again. At this stage, I want to work hard but do not want to be miserable and working 60 hour weeks. At my experience level, can I find a $90-110k job with a decent work/life balance, or am I being unrealistic? I love living here but it is EXPENSIVE!
Thanks for reading.

2023.03.27 01:50 mulullum Nuclear Energy Industry in Canada

Hi everyone,
I will begin with mentioning that I will be moving to Canada permanently in June after leaving my current job. I have been working in the nuclear energy sector in my home country for over 6 years. My experience is relevant to commissioning, EBOP operations, design review and waste management. My experience is with large PWR power plant but I have also worked as a part-time trainee on a CANDU power plant for two years. Additionally, I also have a Masters degree in Nuclear Power Engineering.
My questions from those who have worked or are a part of the sector in Canada right now:
  1. I am really interested in field operations and I think getting a NOIT position would be like a dream coming true for me. I have worked in shifts and really like the routine. So far I came across only Bruce Power hiring for NOIT positions last year but I was not eligible for it as I wasn't authorized to work inside Canada but now I am. Does Bruce Power (or OPG) hire NOIT every year or as/when needed? Any idea on when I can expect them to hire for NOIT again? I have a Masters in engineering but don't have any skilled trades certification like Power Engineer. Will that make me ineligible because I might be overqualified or lack relevant qualification?
  2. I certainly do not have any Canadian work experience but do have experience relevant to nuclear power plants. How difficult will it be to land my first job (in any role)?
  3. I do not have any P. Eng license at the moemnt and it will take me quiet a while to get one. Companies do mention that they want P. Eng license holder and can hire those who might be eligible to get one in future. I wanted to know if they do hire those without the license or irl only P. Eng get the job?
  4. Lastly, I would appreciate if I can get any advice on how to go about my job applications particularly for the nuclear energy sector.

2023.03.27 01:47 International-Gain-7 Stuck between two jobs.. HELP strangers!!

Thank you!!

Row #58 Completed AND Another Card Completed!
Hello, again! Surprise! I'm back. Well, not really a surprise. I still have a few books left to read, and they all complete their own rows and cards. So, here we are again. This completed row is a Row #1, and it completes my Indigo Color Cover Card.
As with my previous posts with a completed card, I'll start with the completed row and the reviews for those books. After that will be a pic of my completed card with all the book covers smushed up against one another to get the full effect of the color covers, and then a pic of my actual bingo card. I'll also include links to the posts of the others rows on the card in case you missed one or you see a book that looks interesting and want to read my review of it.
For this row, I read An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon for the LGBTQIA List Book (Hard Mode) square, The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin for the Weird Ecology (Hard Mode) square, Arianna & the Spirit of the Storm by Robbie Ballew and Stephen Landry for the Two or More Authors square, The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu for the Historical SFF (Hard Mode) square, and A New World by Susan Draper for the Set in Space (Hard Mode) square.

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon - 5/5
Aster is a young woman who is socially awkward but has a great deal of value to those around her, if not above her (more on that in a moment), due to the medical knowledge she has gained over the years. She uses this knowledge to help her fellow workers - slaves, really - to survive in the harsh realities that are the USS Matilda - a spaceship that has been traveling through space for over 3 centuries in search of a promised utopia.
Unfortunately for Aster and her fellow workers, who live on the lower decks of the ship and work in the fields, they are considered subhuman by those who live on the upper decks of the ship. The characterization is very similar to that of the plantation south, complete with overseers who punish those who don't do their work or who violate one of the many rules the low-deckers live under.
Aster has lived her 25 years trying to keep her head down and just get through, especially with the power rations and blackouts that have been occurring on the ship. But when the ship's sovereign dies, an autopsy reveals information that links his death to Aster's mother's suicide 25 years earlier, she begins investigating her mother's suicide, following her mother's footsteps from all those years before. In the process, Aster begins sowing the seeds of civil war among the other lower-deckers.
This book was both amazing and terrible. It was amazing because of the characters, character development, plot, story-telling, and world-building. It was terrible because of the emotion it evoked - but it was terrible in a great way. This book is one that is tough to read because of its realism, but it is absolutely worth the read.
First and foremost, I have to give major props to Solomon's ability to give us a story told from the point of view of a neurodivergent main character who is so relatable. I have read many stories with characters who are neurodivergent, and many authors will lean into the differences but the characters fall flat and end up being relatable as a result, almost as though the characters have become caricatures instead of real people. That is absolutely not true here. Aster not only reads like an actual flesh-and-blood character but by bringing the reader into the mind and her thought processes, she becomes a character with whom one can not only understand but also identify. Aster works as an assistant to the Surgeon and learns a great deal from him. His actions and beliefs stand in stark contrast to the actions of the other oppressors onboard the Matilda, and his slowly-revealed history was one of my favorite parts of the book. Not only did Solomon develop fantastic protagonists, but they gave that same careful attention to the antagonists - Lieutenant was an almost perfect villain for the story, and Solomon didn't relax their character development with his creation either. He was a simple yet complicated character. He wasn't just the bad guy for the bad guy's sake; there were reasons for his terribleness, reasons which made it easy to understand why he was the way he was - even while hating him for being that way. Simple yet complicated.
In addition to absolutely fantastic characters, the world-building Solomon provided was amazing. While I would like to believe that our society has moved beyond slavery, I also know that it wouldn't take much pressure on society to start the oppressive behavior back up that led to slavery the first time. We're partway there in the US as it is. As such, the idea that the people who had been put on a spaceship for an undisclosed, many-generations-long trip toward a new home would use slavery and oppression of those that are seen as subhuman doesn't require very much suspension of reality. Combined with the societal base, Solomon adds a fantastic understanding of how humans respond to mental and physical abuse and generational trauma that creates a very realistic society living aboard a spaceship hurtling through space.
For those of you who are saying "how can it be realistic? It's a science fiction novel!" let me assure you that the science fiction of the novel is only in the setting - the spaceship hurtling through space or Baby, the "sun" used to power the ship - not the actual story. The story itself is one of the human condition, of society and how it controls and is controlled by its people.
The only real complaint I have with this book is the ending. I didn't like where it ended, but that's only because I wanted it to keep going. I wasn't ready to leave the world Solomon had created, and I wanted to continue getting to know the characters they had created. In a lot of ways, the ending of this book reminded me of the ending of The Giver by Lois Lowry. It is an ending to the story, but it is ambiguous enough that it could also be a continuation. There is room for a sequel, should Solomon decide to return to this universe, but it is not required. The selfish part of me hopes they decide to return to the universe, though.
As a final note for this book, I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook, which was narrated by Cherise Booth. She did a great job with the narration, giving a very compelling performance. Though this was the first time I had listened to her, I would absolutely listen to another novel narrated by Booth just based on this performance. If you listen to audiobooks, I definitely recommend this one. If you don't listen to audiobooks, I suggest giving this one a try; you might find yourself opening up to the idea of more audiobooks having done so.
The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin - 3/5
I am conflicted about how to rate this book. On the one hand, I can truly appreciate the absolute epic story that this book is, encompassing the story of 3 women as they struggle to survive and thrive in a world that, by all rights, should kill everyone on the surface nearly every day. On the other hand, the story never grabbed me. I continued with it only because I needed to finish it for a Bingo card and I had no other options readily available.
That's not to say that I didn't like it, because I did. Rather, it was a book that I probably would have put down to return to at a later point in time if I'd had another option for my bingo square. As a result, I know I didn't get nearly as much enjoyment from the book as I likely would have otherwise. I also know that if I were to read it again, when I'm in a different frame of mind, I know that I would enjoy it - Jemisin is a fantastic writer and her skill with word and story are on full display in this book. But I don't know if I will reread it. And that's what has me conflicted about the rating.
I can't even really tell you much about what the book is about beyond what I stated simply above because, though I experienced the entire book, it didn't stick with me. I listened to it and appreciated it in the moment, but then let it go. Nothing seemed to really stick, to grab me and make me remember. There wasn't anything actually wrong with the story. It was a great story, and I've read other books of a similar style that I enjoyed. So the fact that I can't remember details from this one, that it didn't stick with me, annoys me.
I will say that the narrator, Robin Miles, did a fantastic job with the narration. I definitely enjoyed listening to her tell me the story, even if I didn't remember the details later.
Arianna & the Spirit of the Storm by Robbie Ballew and Stephen Landry - 5/5
Arianna has struggled her entire life with the lightning magic she has inside of her, always seeking to suppress the anger and destruction that the voice seems to want to inflict. She has not had an easy life thus far. Her mother died giving birth to her, and the day she was born marked the beginning of a drought that has cursed the land ever since. As a result, many blame Arianna for the curse. When her father, who has been investigating the curse ever since in the hopes of finding a way to end it, is found killed - supposedly be a satyr - suddenly the situation for Arianna changes very rapidly. Not wanting to leave her village, Arianna plans to work in the mines. However, on her first day of work, two knights try to kill her when she shows up. She is able to escape, and she and her best friend leave the village on a quest to end the curse.
This was a really good book and I really enjoyed listening to it. The author did a wonderful job with the characters and the world-building that it was easy to visualize what was happening. I also really liked the way the author handled Arianna's struggles with how she views the satyrs, which has been greatly influenced by propaganda put out to increase the tensions between the fauns (satyrs) and the elves. The cunning of the bad guys was very well-done, and by the end I was moving him up my list of most hated villains. He did not surpass Professor Umbridge as my most-hated character in a book, but he did get pretty close. (Also, I'm avoiding naming the bad guy so I don't give away any spoilers).
Finally, I was able to listen to the audiobook version of this book and loved it. The narrator, Shannon Hobby, did a wonderful job. Indeed, she's one of the few narrators that I have found I do not have to speed up in order to have them approach a normal speaking speed. LOL. The only issue I had with the audiobook was that there were a few places where parts of sentences were repeated in sequence, most likely as a result of a mistimed pick-up. A quick run-through with an audio-proofer would fix that. That being said, it didn't happen often and didn't interfere with my listening. So don't let that be the reason you avoid the audiobook.
The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu - 5/5
Set during the time of the cultural revolution in China, when anyone who was suspected of being a dissident or against the Communist Party was punished and either "re-educated" or killed. Ye is an astrophysicist whose physicist father was killed during a struggle session. When she will not sign a statement regarding her father's guilt, continually stating that she had no knowledge of any of the things they were accusing him of despite her mother and sister already having signed the statement, she is caught up in the accusations. She is later betrayed by a journalist, who set her up as a fall person for dissident beliefs.
Sentenced to re-education, Ye is "recruited" by two scientists in the Chinese Military to work on a project at a military base with the understanding that she would likely never leave the base again. It is when she finds out that the actual project underway is an attempt to contact extra-terrestrial life that a plan begins to come together for Ye.
I had begun reading the book but had found myself getting bogged down by the language, so I began listening to the audiobook. Luke Daniels did a wonderful job with the narration, and listening to him read the book helped me pay more attention to it and actually follow the story a bit more. Even still, I will likely end up either reading or listening to it a second time because I know I still missed things. In a lot of ways, it was a feeling similar to when I had read Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee. The science was so far above my head that it was not understandable, so it became a fluid foundation upon which I rested my understanding of the story. I was able to do that fairly well with Ninefox Gambit, and somewhat well with The Three-Body Problem, but I feel like I will understand more should I read it again - and it was a compelling story so I would like to read it again.
I will say that Ye's view of things, her approach, is so rational and so logical that I find it difficult to even fault her for many of her actions. I'm not sure what that says about me with respect to some of her actions, but with all of the irrationality of the prosecutions that were occurring, her rationality was almost like a breath of fresh air.
A New World by Susan Draper - 4/5
Picking up where Survival left off, Hecate is in great danger, having been taken by the sirens. Artemas and her friends are able to save her, but it reveals to them some weaknesses in their defenses. Back on Earth, the feline virus has been defeated, but it is decimating the human population and nothing seems to slow it down. Khan and Donovan travel back and forth between Kapteyn b and Earth as they aid the scientists at NASA in studying the transforming technology, as well as the intellisensors that allow the felidors to understand all languages. Khan has also formed a bond with one of the felidors and they have decided to try and have a kitten, hopeful that their two species are close enough to allow for crossbreeding. Things seem to be going well. But, of course, Zahra is not content to play nice. He and his minions, Orion and the three orphans, have plans to stoke the anger of the sirens who survived the attack on the Zone and try again.
Will Cassini be able to discover a vaccine for the virus attacking the humans? Will the crossbreeding be successful? Will the Council be able to withstand whatever Zahra has planned? And will the felidors be able to find another planet to inhabit, or will they be forced to endure the continued asteroid strikes on Kapteyn b?
As with the first two books, the short length of this one means that things happen quickly. This is especially true with all the things happening in this book. There is still a great deal of telling instead of showing, as with the first two books, and I am hoping that Susan Draper will expand these stories to full-length novels in the future. There is so much here, and the foundation is good, but the books are over before I'm ready for them to be.
For those of you deciding whether or not to read this book, if you read the first two, you already know what to expect from the writing and storyline. If you haven't read the first two books, let me say this: Talking cats from space. If that sounds interesting, go grab Virus Attack (Book 1) and read it. If that doesn't sound interesting to you, well, then, I don't understand you but not every book is for everybody. But still, how could you not be interested by talking cats? From space?!? So cool.

If you want to revisit (or visit for the first time) any of the reviews from the earlier rows, here are the links:
Row #2
Row #3
Row #4
Row #5
And, here is the final Bingo Card. As a reminder, the stars on this card are different from the star ratings that I gave each book. The star ratings on this card are related to how likely I was to read the book before the Book Bingo started. 1 star means I was going to read the book whether it fit a square or not, so YAY, it fit a square! 2 stars mean that the book was on my TBR list and would have most likely been read sometime this year even without the bingo cards. 3 Stars means the book was on my TBR list, but likely 2-3 years out (My TBR list is, at the moment, about 4 years long given my current reading speed of 450-550 books/year. No, I don't have a problem. Why do you ask?). 4 stars means that I found the book while searching for books to fill squares, but I most likely would have read it or at least put it on my TBR list had I discovered the book in a different way. 5 stars mean that I found and read the book specifically because it fits a bingo square.

If you've reached this part of the post, thank you for your time and attention. With the completion of this row, I have now completed 298 of 300 books and have only 2 left. 2 more rows and 2 more squares. Here's hoping I can get those books read and finish the last 2 squares in the next 5 days.
Until next time, Happy Reading!
