For the first yellow highlight, I went to Mexican Consulate office in Phoenix and was told I needed to go to a website to fill out form and make an appt except it was all in Spanish. Banjercito.com.mx

Hey! The AC unit at our apartment is rather old and our landlords have yet to replace it. It broke 3 different times last summer and is already struggling this summer and we haven’t even hit the temps above 90. I found some information on hud.gov in the tenants handbook, but all it said is that landlords need to make sure the heat is reliable above 65 degrees from October to May.
Is there any legal recourse we can take regarding the AC in our state? It gets flipping hot here. Over half the summer is over 95 degrees, if not over 100. I find it difficult to believe there are no laws regarding the maintenance of the AC as well. Please and thank you in advance.

Some headline figures:
4000 more entrants, but a decrease in newly qualified entrants. During the "covid years" entrants were lower than in any other year in their records, so this represents a return to 2017-2019 levels of entrants.
7800 more leavers- 44,000 in total, which represents about 10% of the workforce. The vast majority of those aren't retiring, and there's a big increase in people leaving for reasons other than retirement- about 9000.
They give data for "out of service" leavers back to 2010. This is the highest year for "out of service" leavers although other years have been higher for overall number of leavers.
Attrition rates for new teachers are pretty high- over 10% leave in their first year, nearly 25% by the second year, over 30% by the 5th year, and over 40% within 10 years.
Teacher vacancies in November doubled from 2020 to 2022, and are over 5x higher than 2010. I'm not sure if November is the most useful time to sample this?
The majority of hours taught are by a teacher with a relevant qualification, but the rate varies between subjects. For example, in maths it's 87%, physics 72%, Spanish 61%, Geography 88%, Chemistry 83%, Computing 54%. In some subjects there's definitely a decreasing trend, but it others it's broadly stable.
Finally, sickness/absence- 67% of teachers had at least one day of absence due to sickness, the highest out of the data provided. Average number of days taken was 9.3, which was also the highest.
Overall, it's an interesting picture- and perhaps more positive in some places than I thought, but I wonder how much worse things are already this academic year, and how much worse things will be next accademic year?

Last night, at the Downtown Library, PUSH Buffalo and The League of Women Voters held a candidate forum for all competitive races for the upcoming common council election. Each candidate running in a competitive Democratic primary was invited. The city has no Republican primary in any district.
Under NYS only registered party members can vote in party primaries. The deadline to change your party affiliation has passed according to the NYSBOE. The deadline to register is June 17th, any applications sent by mail MUST BE RECEIVED BY JUNE 17th.You can check your voter registration status and your polling location here. Recap
I will try my best in the following section to recap the event to the best of my abilities. I do not pretend to be unbiased, however, I will attempt to be fair to each of the candidates in my highlights section.
Matt Dearing (Note, he will also be on the November Ballot on the WFP Line)
Matt Dearing gave several answers of policy substance. He highlighted his experience as a community relations director for the NYS assembly. Some substantive policy positions he stated included:

• A full removal of the NYS-33 as opposed to the proposed cap
• Buffalo becoming a "Sanctuary City", which would prevent city law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration officials
• A pilot program for municipal sidewalk snow removal
• Buffalo taking steps required under the Emergency Tenant Protection Act to enact rent control
• Cracking down on code violations for landlords and expediting the inspections process
• Expanding the cities network of protected bike lanes and integrating them with the NFTA

Cedric Holloway
Cedric Holloway emphasized his love of his community, his involvement in youth sports and his role as a youth mentor. He used much of his time to talk about the value of community programs. Some highlights from him include

• Expanding job training and youth development
• Expediting city allocation of lead abatement funds to property owners
• A full removal of the NYS-33 as opposed to the proposed cap
• Hiring more housing inspectors (said the city has 4, 3 of whom are currently paid using ARP funds, I would need a fact check to confirm)

Eddie Egriu
Eddie Egriu highlighted his experience in the private sector and in activism. I frankly couldn't understand a lot of his answers to policy questions (at one point he gave a statement that could be interpreted as being either pro or anti-marijuana legalization for example). He included some attacks on other candidates, which I will not repeat. He emphasized

• A full removal of the NYS-33 as opposed to the proposed cap
• Opposition to subsidized housing development without strict affordability quotas
• "Experience" (He started every sentence in his closing statement with the word)
• Property tax relief for homeowners

Leah Halton Pope
Leah Halton Pope emphasized throughout the night her deep relationships across the community and all levels of government. She emphasized her experience working for the Assembly Majority leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes. Many of her answers were vague and hard to pin down on specifics, often emphasizing working with others to find solutions. For instance, on a question regarding BPD's sharing of license plate information with federal immigration agencies, she emphasized being welcoming of immigrants, and "working with our partners in the federal government" to ensure their rights are respected. On housing, she emphasized the need for housing stability but did not commit to using the ETPA, (however, she may have alluded to it).On the issue of the 33 redesign:

• Came out in support of the cap of the NYS-33 as opposed to the full removal.

Background: What is Cop City?

Cop city is a $90 million proposed training center for police officers. It would include a mock city, a helicopter pad, areas for explosives testing and high-speed vehicle chases, and new shooting ranges in 85 acres of the South River Forest (south of Atlanta, Georgia). Taxpayers will foot one-third of the bill, with the Atlanta Police Foundation funding the remaining $60 million.

The Atlanta Police Foundation, which is helping fund the project in an unincorporated part of DeKalb county, says on its website that it will have “the necessary facilities required to effectively train 21st-century law enforcement agencies responsible for public safety in a major urban city.”
Among the training features will be a burn tower for firefighters to practice extinguishing life-threatening blazes; areas for high-speed vehicle chases; a helicopter landing pad; a mock village including residential, school, nightlife and community areas, with structures such as a bank and a gas station; and a shooting range.

The project was approved by the city of Atlanta in September 2021 after 17 hours of public comment, 70% of which was against the training center.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said...that she is aware of widespread opposition to the recently-approved $90 million public safety training facility to be built of forested land, and it is unfortunate that the city “didn’t have anything else to choose from” in terms of other potential sites to build the sprawling facility.

Shortly after the city vote in late 2021, forest defenders and activists barricaded the area and took residence among the trees to prevent the forest from being demolished. The movement is largely described as leaderless and autonomous, with participants citing varied motivations:

“It’s sort of this ungoverned amorphous group of folks,” said Roddy. “Nobody's the boss. It’s really empowering to see how much a group of folks can accomplish together and to know that you can participate however feels empowering and feels comfortable to you.”

The protests have attracted people against the further militarization of the police, the destruction of green space and pollution of the environment, and the continuance of colonial policies (South River Forest was once Muscogee Creek Native American land).

Oppression

Though protests have taken place since the city approved the construction of Cop City, state officials began severely cracking down on activists over the past year.

Tortuguita

Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, also known as Tortuguita, became the face of Cop City resistance after Georgia State Patrol troopers shot and killed the activist. Paez Terán was a 26-year-old Indigenous Venezuelan and member of the queer community who took part in several social justice movements.

In an interview from an encampment in the Atlanta forest last year, a protester identified only as Tortuguita—Spanish for “little turtle”—explained how nonviolence would pave the way for them to successfully stop “Cop City,” a proposed $90 million police training facility slated to be built across 85-acres of dense woodland.
“We get a lot of support from people who live here, and that’s important because we win through nonviolence,” Tortuguita, who used they/them pronouns, told journalist David Peisner for a feature published in Bitter Southerner in December and updated this week. “We’re not going to beat them at violence.”

On January 18, 2023, officers raided the South River Forest encampment. According to the official police account, Paez Terán ignored their commands to exit a tent and pulled a gun, firing first at officers. A bullet allegedly from a gun in Paez Terán’s possession struck an officer in the pelvic area. The troopers then opened fire on Paez Terán, killing them.
There is no body camera recording of the shooting. However, Atlanta Police Department officers with body cameras were nearby in the forest, capturing snippets of conversation that suggest the wounded cop may have been hit by friendly fire.

Approximately 18 minutes into the video, four gunshots can be heard off-camera and one officer mutters, “Oh shit,” to himself. The group of Atlanta police officers immediately stop in their tracks, then another 16 shots ring out before there’s a barrage of noise—making it hard to make out individual shots. After approximately 12 seconds of shooting an officer can be heard muttering to himself, “Is this target practice?” Another officer turns and says, “Those are real shots being fired.”
Roughly a minute and 40 seconds after the first shot, the group starts to move ahead after some sort of audible signal. The officers are warned multiple times about crossfire.
One officer whispers quietly, “They’re shooting at us.”
“Nah, that sounded like suppressed gunfire.”
“Yeah, it did.”
An announcement over the radio confirms an officer was injured. A few seconds later, the officer wearing the body camera can be heard saying, “Man, you fucked your own officer up.” [...]
In the last two minutes as officers are seemingly winding down from the operation a conversation can be overheard.
“Did they shoot their own man?”
To which an officer replies, “We don’t know what he got shot by…” and the rest of what he says is hard to decipher. An officer responds and says, “The first one, they said, was suppressed.”

Further calling into question the official version of events, the DeKalb County coroner did not find gunpowder residue on Paez Terán’s hands. An independent autopsy determined that Paez Téran had been shot 14 times "by different firearms" with their hands raised while sitting cross-legged on the ground—again, inconsistent with the firing of a gun, though the autopsy report states “it is impossible to determine” if they were holding a firearm or not.

Arrests

At least 35 people have been arrested for protesting Cop City in recent months, charged with a controversial domestic terrorism provision of Georgia law.
In 2017, the Georgia state legislature changed the legal definition of domestic terrorism (Title 16, Chapter 11, Article 6). Instead of only criminalizing acts that are intended to or reasonably likely to kill or injure at least 10 people, the new definition includes certain property crimes intended to “change” government policy through “intimidation or coercion.”

ACLU: The amendment added a stigmatizing label and a harsher punishment — up to 35 years in prison — to property crimes that were already illegal, simply because of accompanying political expression critical of government policy. At the time of the amendment’s passing, the ACLU of Georgia and other civil rights groups objected that the statute could be weaponized to suppress protected First Amendment activity…As states have increasingly passed “domestic terrorism” laws, the result is that a range of at times wholly innocent or constitutionally protected activity is penalized and stigmatized with a politically-charged label.

In December 2022, five protesters were arrested for allegedly throwing rocks at police cars while officers tried to clear the forest. All were charged with domestic terrorism, four with criminal trespassing, three with aggravated assault, and two with interference with government property.
Seven more protesters were arrested in January, during the same raid that resulted in the murder of Paez Téran. All were charged with domestic terrorism and criminal trespassing. Following the arrests, Gov. Brian Kemp (R) called the protesters “militant activists” and said “we will bring the full force of state and local law enforcement down on those trying to bring about a radical agenda through violent means.”
Then, in March, police stormed a music festival organized by “Stop Cop City” activists and arrested 35 people. According to officials, some of the protesters had earlier set fire to a bulldozer and police ATV a mile away at the South River Forest construction site. Of the 35 people arrested, 23 charged with domestic terrorism, including a designated legal observer for the National Lawyers Guild. The police based the arrests on the fact that some protesters had muddy shoes in a forest.

The probable cause stated in the warrants against the activists is extremely weak. Police cited arrestees having mud on their shoes — in a forest. The warrants alleged they had written a legal support phone number on their arms, as is common during mass protests. And, in a few cases, police alleged protesters were holding shields — hardly proof of illegal activity — which a number of defendants even deny…
“Roughly 1,500 people attended over the weekend; to dance, to commune, and to take a stand against Cop City,” organizers of the music festival, the Sonic Defense Committee, told me. “There is no excuse for the police violence that festival attendees were subjected to.”

In April, police arrested three activists in Cartersville, about 40 miles north of Atlanta, for distributing flyers calling attention to the police killing of Paez Terán. The three were charged with felony intimidation of an officer of the state and misdemeanor stalking for sharing flyers that included the names of six officers involved in the shooting—information that was already made public by a different organization.

According to their lawyer, Lyra Foster, the activists drove once through the neighborhood and placed flyers on numerous mailboxes without exiting their vehicle or approaching any residents…All three arrestees are being held at Bartow County Jail; all were denied bond by a magistrate judge on Monday. None of the defendants has a criminal history, nor is there any allegation of violence in the current charges. “Denying them bond was extreme, in my opinion,” Foster said.

Finally, last week Atlanta police officers and agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested three people connected to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, which has paid bail and provided legal support for Cop City protesters. Video of the raid showed at least a dozen officers in riot gear with assault rifles raiding a community organizing house in East Atlanta. The three people arrested — Marlon Kautz, 39; Savannah Patterson, 30; and Adele MacLean, 42 — were charged with the felony crimes of charity fraud and money laundering, under the state’s tenuous theory that supporting protesters accused of domestic terrorism is, itself, a crime.

Lauren Regan, executive director of the Civil Liberties Defense Center, called the arrests an "extreme provocation" in a statement.
"Bailing out protestors who exercise their constitutionally protected rights is simply not a crime," Regan said. "In fact, it is a historically grounded tradition in the very same social and political movements that the city of Atlanta prides itself on. Someone had to bail out civil rights activists in the 60's — I think we can all agree that community support isn't a crime."

Gov. Kemp called the organizers “criminals”:

“These criminals facilitated and encouraged domestic terrorism with no regard for others, watching as communities faced the destructive consequences of their actions.” the Republican said. “Here in Georgia, we do not allow that to happen.”
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, also a Republican, pledged to “not rest until we have held accountable every person who has funded, organized, or participated in this violence and intimidation.”

The latest

The Atlanta City Council voted 11-4 to approve legislation to fund Cop City in the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 6. More than 1,000 people signed up to speak during the 15-hour long session, which can be watched here. Many more community members were allegedly prevented from speaking after the city council cut off public comment signup.

Help with Senior Year Schedule
Ok so I am currently choosing classes for senior year and have run into a dilemma. This is what I have now
0: Physical Education 1: Accounting Honors 2: AP English Lit and Comp 3: Multivariable Calc Honors 4 S1: AP Microeconomics 4 S2: AP Macroeconomics 5: Spanish V Honors 6: AP Physics C 7: Lunch 8 S1: AP Environmental Science 8 S2: AP US Government and Politics
APES at my school is a full year class, so it’s less than ideal to only do half of it.
I could move gov to 7th period first semester, but that would mean not having lunch that entire semester which could be really exhausting to go from 7:00 - 3:15 w/o eating.
To have a full year, should I drop a semester of Spanish instead or not do either Micro or Macro? I would self study the other.
as of rn, i plan on self studying second semester apes content, which I hear is easier than econ and not too bad since most content is first semester.
What do you think? Lmk your thoughts.

Mina Miller Edison lived an incredibly inspiring life. She thrived in numerous aspects. Especially since she played many roles throughout her impressive lifespan. Highly educated, confident, ambitious and determined represent the characteristics that describe Mina.
She displayed a deep committed to her family. This includes being the loving wife to inventor, entrepreneur and American icon Thomas Edison. She was also a loving and dedicated mother.
In addition, Mina demonstrated a strong passion for her community with the endless organizations that she contributed a tremendous amount of time and energy.
Mina was born into an entrepreneurial family on July 6, 1865. As the Miller family continued to grow, Mina was the seventh of eleven children born to inventor Lewis Miller and Mary Alexander. Her parents had a love for education. Mina attended and graduated from Akron High School in Ohio. After high school, she went on to study at a home and day school in Boston.

Mina’s Father the Inventor and Founder

Mina Miller Edison was born into a family that was used to being in the spotlight. Lewis Miller was a successful inventor. He also became one of the founders of Chautauqua Institution. The Miller family spent summers in their home along Chautauqua Lake. Her families love for Chautauqua was passed down to Mina. Therefore, when she had a family of her own she brought them to her family home at Chautauqua Institition.

Mina’s father and husband both had a passion for inventing. However, what they chose to invent was different from one another. While Thomas concentrated on technology and electronics, Lewis focused on farm equipment. They shared the common goal of making life easier with their inventions.

Chautauqua Institution

Chautauqua Institution sets on the shores of beautiful Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York State. The Institution was originally called the Chautauqua Lake Sunday School Assembly. It was founded in 1874 as an educational experiment in out-of-school, vacation learning by industrialist Lewis Miller and Methodist Bishop John Heyl Vincent. Hence, a place where spirituality meets continuing education.

Chautauqua Institution

The Multiple Achievements of Mina Miller

Marriage to Thomas Edison

When Mina Miller met Thomas Edison, she was promised to her gentleman suitor, George Vincent, the son of Bishop Vincent. Edison learned that Mina would be staying the summer at Chautauqua, he arranged to spend time there to win her and meet her family. Thomas Edison’s hearing was badly compromised by this time from when he was a child so he taught Mina to send and receive Morse code. That summer, he used it to ask her to marry him. He tapped “Will you Marry Me?” on Mina’s hand, and she said “Yes.”
The next step was getting permission from Mina’s Father Lewis, to which Thomas wrote this:
“I trust you will not accuse me of egotism when I say that my life and history and standing are so well known as to call for no statement concerning myself. My reputation is so far made that I recognize I must be judged by it for good or ill. I need only add in conclusion that the step I have taken in asking your daughter to entrust her happiness into my keeping has been the result of mature deliberation, and with the full appreciation of the responsibility and the duty I have undertaken to fulfill. I do not deny that your answer will seriously affect my happiness, and I trust my suit will meet with your approval.”
This letter won the approval of Mr. Miller. The date for the wedding was set for February 24, 1886, hardly more than a year after they met. She was only 20 years old. Oak Place, the Miller home in Akron, was to be the site of the wedding. Father Miller and his Mary Valinda spared no expense in seeing that the nuptials were an occasion to be remembered.

Managing a Home Full of Staff and Children

When Mina and Thomas Edison got married she was much younger then her husband. She became the stepmother to his three children. Still being young herself she was not fully ready for motherhood. However, Mina Miller Edison took charge of the household. Often times Thomas was not around due to his work. This left Mina in charge of hiring the house staff as well as raising the children. Furthermore, she gave herself the title of “home executive”. Mina also held ownership of Glenmont. The home she shared with Thomas. Owning and managing her own home was the first of many successes for Mina.

Children of Her Own

Two years after their marriage Mina and Thomas added to their family with their first child, Madeleine. This started the same pattern of children Thomas had with his first wife. Their daughter was soon followed by two sons, Charles and Theodore.

Madeleine Edison

Madeleine was born on May 31st, 1888, the first child born to Mina. She was born in Glenmont, the Edison Family home in New Jersey. Madeleine married John Eyre Sloane. She married him in the Drawing Room at Glenmont on June 17, 1914. Madeleine and John had four sons, who happened to be Thomas Edison’s only grandchildren from either marriage.
Madeleine briefly ran for Congress in 1938, she sadly lost. During World War II she gave much of her time to blood drives for the New Jersey Red Cross. She also administered the Edison Birthplace in Milan, Ohio after her mother’s death. She died on February 14, 1979.

Charles Edison

Charles Edison was born into the Edison Family at the Glenmont on August 3, 1890. He married Carolyn Hawkins, whom he had met in 1912 then married on March 27, 1918. Finally, he became president of his father’s company, Thomas A. Edison, Incorporated, in 1927. He ran the company until it was sold in 1959.
Charles is the best known because of his second career, in public service. In the mid-1930s he served in the cabinet of President Franklin Roosevelt. First as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, then as Acting Secretary. New Jersey voters elected him as their governor in 1940. He also founded a charitable foundation that now bears his name, the Charles Edison Fund. He died on July 31, 1969

Theodore Miller Edison

Theodore Miller Edison was the last to be born at Glenmont on July 10, 1898. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, from which he earned his physics degree in 1923. He was the only member of the Edison family to graduate from college.
Theodore did work for his father’s company after graduation. After starting as an ordinary lab assistant, he worked his way up to technical director of research and engineering for Thomas A. Edison, Inc. He eventually founded his own company, Calibron Industries, Inc. Also, he built his own smaller laboratory in West Orange. Theodore earned over 80 patents in his career. In 1925 he married Anna Maria Osterhout, a graduate of Vassar. He became an ardent environmentalist. Theodore lived in West Orange with his wife Anna until his death on November 24, 1992.

Mina’s Step-Children

With the marriage between Thomas and Mina, she took on his three children from the first marriage. Marion, twelve years old, Thomas, Jr. ten years old, and William Leslie eight years old. She continued to struggle with her relationship with her stepdaughter. Mina’s stepchildren did not take education as seriously as she did. They believed that Edison’s fame could make their future for them. Finally, due to this belief, Mina’s stepchildren went on to live less acclaimed lives as the other Edison children.

Marion Estelle Edison

Marion was the first born of Thomas Edison’s children. She was born on February 18, 1873, and gained the nickname “Dot” as a child after Morse Code. In 1895 she married Karl Oscar Oeser, a German army lieutenant. They lived in Germany through the First World War. Unfortunately, her marriage ended in divorce in 1921. Finally, she then returned to the United States, where she died on April 16, 1965.

Thomas Alva Edison Jr

Thomas Alva, Junior, was born on January 10, 1876. He had the nickname “Dash” after Morse Code like his sister. He went on to marry stage actress Marie Louise Toohey in 1899. However, the marriage ended within a year. He next married Beatrice Heyzer. Thomas Jr sold the use of his name to advertise “quack” medicines and dubious inventions. His father disapproved of this and eventually asked him to change his name. Thomas Jr. briefly went by the name of Thomas Willard. His efforts at inventing and starting a mushroom farm failed. Finally, he died on August 25, 1935.

William Leslie Edison

William Leslie was born on October 26, 1878. He went to school at St. Paul’s School, Concord, New Hampshire. Then also attended J.M.Hawkins School on Staten Island. He later studied at the Sheffield scientific school at Yale. William soon married Blanche Travers. William Edison served in the military during the Spanish-American War in 1898. He also served again in the First World War. Like his brother he turned to farm life, breeding chickens. Finally, he died on August 10, 1937.

Chautauqua Institute and Mina’s Influence

Mina’s father’s love for Chautauqua was passed down to his daughter. Mina dedicated herself to many organizations locally. She supported many land and wildlife conservation. Often times Mina would donate her own funds to projects for Chautauqua. Mina became a trustee of the institute. Others involved in Chautauqua held Mina in high regards. Also much like her father, Mina continued her involvement with her beloved Institute until her passing in 1947.
Mina was active in many different organizations and clubs including:

After Thomas Edison passed away, Mina started The Thomas Alva Edison Foundation in his memory. The foundation combined both Thomas’s and Mina’s passions. Mina’s love for education and Thomas’s love for science. However, later on, the nature of the foundation changed. It was no longer dedicated to advancements in science and education. Finally, it became a foundation aimed at preserving Thomas Edison’s name and accomplishments

Thank you to the nearly 400 Somerville residents and workers who attended the only currently scheduled public hearing for the FY 2024 budget tonight! The hearing was fully virtual and lasted 4 hours. Due to several technology issues, it started 25 minutes late, there were constant issues with the Spanish and Portuguese language channels, and interpretation also ended after hour 2 because the services weren't booked for long enough, which was extremely frustrating and disappointing.
In spite of all of this, an estimated 90 people testified verbally (including me). The 3 funding demands echoed by essentially all the residents:
1) Demolishing and rebuilding the Winter Hill Community School 2) A non-police alternative emergency response program, and 3) Affordable housing initiatives to stop the displacement crisis
-- All of which seem to be missing from the current proposed budget. Many residents, especially WHS parents and teachers, are calling on the Council to fully reject the budget and vote no until the Mayor amends the city's capital improvement plan to authorize bonds to rebuild the school. It was a powerful and inspiring night, and I appreciate ALL our neighbors who dedicated time to make your voice heard during one of our city's most important public processes!
I believe a recording of the hearing should by released by the City in a few days. Don't exercise your (long) options for stock! Exercising throws away extrinsic value that selling retrieves. Simply sell your (long) options, to close the position, to harvest value, for a gain or loss. Your break-even is the cost of your option when you are selling. If exercising (a call), your breakeven is the strike price plus the debit cost to enter the position. Further reading: Monday School: Exercise and Expiration are not what you think they are.
Also, generally, do not take an option to expiration, for similar reasons as above.

Hello, I'm a junior going to a good public school in the Bay Area. I have absolutely 0 diversity points: Indian cisgender male, $500k income bracket, interested in computer science. No outstanding skills in sports for sports recruitment. Stats and ECs are indicated below.
