2023.06.08 13:07 Jetsurge Why are orange lightsabers so rare?

(Some Jedi Survivor spoilers will be in here).
In Jedi Survivor orange lightsabers were finish added into new canon, they were weilded by a few Bedlam Raider bosses who were gifted lightsabers from their leader Rayvis.
I assume these lightsabers were from High Republic Jedi who Rayvis killed in that era. This leads me to believe that orange kyber crystals are formed from a certain state of mind some Jedi at the time had like yellow crystals except even rarer (I don't believe we have seen orange sabers in any High Republic material yet).
There are also the two villains in the upcoming Ahsoka show who have orange looking lightsabers, however their sabers are a darker blood orange. From an interview from Dave Filoni I believe these are still sabers with bleed crystal as he mentioned that Vader's saber in the OT looked more orange in certain shots. I think it's just a choice to signal to the audience that these characters are different to your normal darksiders. In Jedi Survivor we also see Dagan's red saber is more of a orange redish shade too instead of the traditional red (It looks different to Vader's and the Inquisitors in the game).
Finally I think there's the out of universe explanation that orange is the closest colour to red which might be why they've avoided it.

2023.06.08 13:03 readmode Switzerland and the EU: united in stubbornness

To the point
Helvetic village. Switzerland: a small state with a big identity. But there is a fine line between state sovereignty and provincial isolationism.
Parallels. Switzerland and the EU are not as different as they are often portrayed - neither structurally nor in terms of their internal complexity.
EU scepticism. Anti-EU attitudes have a long tradition in Switzerland, despite close economic ties and acceptance of large parts of the EU regulatory framework.
Risk. In a world in geopolitical upheaval, Switzerland is in danger of losing an opportunity with its vague positioning on the EU.
The similarities are striking: both Switzerland and the European Union did not come into being by chance, but as a result of political will - in each case in opposition to the prevailing mainstream at the time. Here Switzerland, the neutral, federalist, prosperous small state in the heart of Europe. On the other hand, there is the European Union, the continental integration experiment based on peace, prosperity and values.
On the one hand, 26 cantons, on the other 27 states, all equally independent and stubborn political entities. They are held together by a sophisticated structure of common rules and institutions. Each canton, each member state is power-conscious, economically successful, in competition with others, internationally networked.
All special cases with their own unmistakable history and tradition. And all 53 eye with suspicion what comes from the centre, once from Bern, once from Brussels. Neither are real capitals, but they are centres of impulse and control in the finely tuned balance of power and the redistribution of solidarity-based benefits. Nine million inhabitants here, about 50 times as many there. Each with a common currency, but a colourful mix of languages and religions. Four official languages in Switzerland, 24 in the EU. And twice a motto in Latin: "Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno" (one for all, all for one) and "In varietate concordia" (united in diversity). Which belongs to which?
Difficult relationship
Despite all the similarities, Switzerland and the EU find it difficult to build a lasting constructive relationship with each other. This has a lot to do with their respective self-images, but also with the interests of influential individual actors and groups. Yet there is no alternative to close economic networking for both: half of all Swiss exports go to the EU's internal market. Goods and services worth almost one billion francs are exchanged every day. Almost 1.5 million EU citizens work in Switzerland at attractive wages; conversely, almost half a million Swiss citizens are on the EU labour market.
The EU has so far shown a lot of understanding for its difficult neighbour. More than 120 individual bilateral treaties regulate relations between Switzerland and the EU, especially access to the internal market. However, passive membership of third parties in the internal market, the centrepiece of European unification, was never a future model from Brussels' point of view.
Thus, in the 1990s, the European Economic Area (EEA) was created for those Europeans who did not want to join the Community in the foreseeable future. It offered access to the internal market with a common institutional component for settling disputes. Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland joined, the Swiss refused in 1992. Then, as now, the pronounced anti-EU attitude had a name and a face: Christoph Blocher, billionaire, industrialist, media owner, short-term Federal Councillor.
New attempt at a relationship
After the failure of Switzerland's EEA accession, it gradually became clear to both partners how incompatible their ideas for the common future were. 24 years after the application, Switzerland also formally withdrew its membership application in 2016. Switzerland would probably never become an EU member. Or only when it was doing badly economically, according to Christoph Blocher.
In the EU, too, enthusiasm for Switzerland as an extra-complicated partner declined in proportion to the internal pressure from right-wing Eurosceptic parties in its own ranks. Everyone would like to have a tailor-made membership, why should only the Swiss get one?
From then on, the "internal market without nothing" was no longer part of the EU's offer. Instead of further individual treaties, a kind of "umbrella treaty" was needed. At the head of the Commission, a convinced representative of the small states, the Luxembourger Jean-Claude Juncker, took up the mantle. He knew the interests and deep-seated fears of the successful small states better than anyone else.
But this attempt was also a failure. At the end of May 2021, the Swiss government declared the negotiations over. Just like that. Without involving parliament or the people. Remarkable in the model country of direct democracy. In 1992, the EEA issue had been put to the vote of the people and the cantons. Thirty years later, apparently no one was prepared to go to the polls for an agreement that was actually tailor-made, complete with dynamic adoption of law, emergency brake and arbitration court. This would have made Switzerland the only country in the world to adopt EU legislation à la carte.
Where there is (no) will, there is (no) way
Foreign policy is a direct function of domestic policy. The Swiss government got caught up in tactics. The Federal Council made no attempt to explain to its citizens the benefits of a longer-term stabilisation agreement with the EU. No convincing personality in the government unreservedly supported the finalised agreement. Many groups found reasons not to like the agreement. The trade unions in particular successfully climbed the barricades on the issue of wage protection. Their alliance with the right-wing nationalist SVP and its fetishism for sovereignty prevented a majority for the framework agreement.
In addition, there was a lack of willingness to reform in certain business circles and a general unwillingness to let the EU show its cards. In the end, a critical mass of positive arguments was lacking. The status quo seemed preferable to the manageable risk of a pragmatic consolidation.
Blocher's narrative of the indomitable Helvetic village had taken possession of public opinion. "We find ourselves back on field 1 after thirty years of European policy muck," says Peter Ziegler, former editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Der Bund" and remorseful EEA opponent, in view of the fruitless wear and tear on diplomatic and political energies.
What is striking is that the now almost universal practice of "autonomous implementation" - i.e. the direct adoption of EU law - does not seem to bother anyone. Why does sovereignty-conscious Switzerland not want to sit at the table in Brussels? Co-decide? Co-responsible? Has the "special case of Switzerland" even become strategically incapable in the end? In a networked world, sovereignty has long since ceased to be understood as medieval autarky. Especially for small states, whose security is ultimately guaranteed from the outside, it is a matter of optimising possibilities of influence. And about the wise use of multilateral mergers as "sovereignty enhancers" - see the EU and Ireland.
Numbers & Facts
Fortress in the Alps
As a neutral country, Switzerland must be able to defend itself. The Confederation is therefore well equipped, and defence is considered a civic duty in society.
Army people
One often hears: Switzerland does not have an army, it is an army. The army is largely recruited from militia soldiers. All male citizens must enlist at the age of 18. As long as they are physically and mentally fit and are not doing civilian service, recruits regularly take part in exercises after initial training. As a result, Switzerland has around 150,000 active and trained soldiers. Those who do not perform military service must pay three per cent of their annual income as military substitute tax.
High striking power
In a comparison of military capabilities, Switzerland ranks 44th worldwide (Global Firepower Index). But all the countries listed higher - with the exception of Norway - have a larger population than the Swiss; Austria, which is the same size, only comes in 84th in the same ranking. No wonder, Switzerland invests around five billion francs a year in armament. In addition to a well-developed network of defence installations, the army has 148 aircraft, including the F-35, the most modern fighter jets in the world. Despite its many mountains, Switzerland has 380 tanks.
Weapon in the wardrobe
Many a tourist is amazed to see armed citizens in public. Soldiers take their service weapon, the assault rifle 90, home with them. About 100 weapons are lost every year. But they are often found again, as an army spokesman affirmed, for example by the next tenant.
What does Switzerland want?
The Swiss model of "one foot in, one foot out" seems comfortable. As if there really is "the nickel and the dime" (a Helvetic metaphor for a barter deal in which one gets everything and the other nothing) in the long run. It is not for nothing that a Bertelsmann study from 2019 attests that Switzerland benefits the most from the EU's internal market. But the current state of affairs is no good as a model for the future. From the EU's point of view, there will be no new market access agreements without agreement on the institutional dimension.
The erosion of the bilateral treaties will only become noticeable creepingly for the time being - for example, when less or no investment is made in research projects or university start-ups and spin-offs; when energy security in the supply of electricity becomes fragile and help is needed; when locations of the medtech industry are relocated to the EU. But the train keeps moving, and those who do not act in time will be left sitting at the station.
In 2023, elections will be held in Switzerland. Normally, this is not a good time to rely on reason and an overarching perspective. But there is no holiday from history. The brutal Russian attack on neighbour Ukraine is turning old certainties upside down. European security policy is reshaping itself. The migration wave is rolling again. The EU needs every ounce of political energy for itself. Brexit, the Ukraine invasion and increasing geopolitical tensions are causing more unity in the EU and less willingness for special arrangements.
What does Switzerland actually want? Who immediately knows the Swiss line, not only in European policy? In times of forming geopolitical blocs, this lack of legibility can quickly become a serious disadvantage. Even among well-meaning neighbours, perplexity, even resentment, is spreading. Bern bought US fighter planes, not German or French ones. Paris and Berlin are pawing at them. Solidarity with Ukraine is not enough to deliver ammunition produced in Switzerland to Germany. Is Switzerland losing reliability in its dealings with partners?
Putting our money where our mouth is
While Bern dreams of a new framework agreement (Bilaterals III) without even being able to agree internally on a negotiating mandate, the President of the EU Commission leaves the Swiss President out in the cold in Davos in January 2023. No time for a meeting - indignation in the Swiss media. A snub? Or just a thoughtful hint that the indecisive neighbour is slipping in the ranking of EU priorities?
It is time to put our money where our mouth is. The Swiss cross and the European stars do not stand for irreconcilable opposites. Nothing in Switzerland's political genetics makes it an enemy of Europe. And conversely, no neighbour wants to bully Switzerland. Perhaps after thirty years of pause for reflection, Switzerland could throw some mirages overboard and show the world what it really is: European through and through, always has been.
Conclusion:
The relationship between Switzerland and the European Union has always been complicated. Admittedly, there are many similarities; both Switzerland and the EU, for example, are characterised by complex institutions that balance a multitude of individual interests. Nevertheless, both sides find it difficult to permanently regulate their relationship. Bern broke off negotiations on a framework treaty with the EU in 2021 without consulting the people. For pragmatic reasons, Switzerland has to adopt large parts of the EU regulations, but is reluctant to have a say in Brussels. Meanwhile, the EU's motivation to deal with the small state is sinking. In a world where geopolitical blocs are forming, a vague Swiss position could be increasingly disadvantageous.

2023.06.08 12:59 texchange07 How the Invention of Cotton Gin Changed the World for Textile Companies

Ever wondered how cotton became the most popular textile in the world? Had it not been for the mechanical cotton gin, this natural fiber would have remained as costly as silk, making it difficult for Indian cotton suppliers to secure profitable deals effortlessly. In 1792, little did Eli Whitney know that his invention would greatly alter the course of the global textile industry. And that his patented machine (1794) would have a greater impact on shaping America’s history economically and politically, to a degree, the Civil War. In ancient times, cotton was harvested by hand – the cotton seeds had to be picked out of the cotton bolls by hand, making the process slow and laborious. It took eight to twelve hours just to clean the husks and separate the seeds from one kg of cotton fiber, let alone a whole field of cotton. While the process was painful and taxing, it was necessary to ensure the harvesters got pure cotton. Farmers andtextile companies in Indiafollowed this process for centuries until Eli Whitney invented the revolutionary mechanical Cotton Gin.

What is Whitney’s Cotton Gin? How it Grew the Industry?

Like modern cotton gins, Whitney’s mechanical Greige fabric gin processed the cotton through hooks and combs that separated the fiber from the seeds and husks. This sped up the process by several hours, encouraging farmers to plant more cotton fields. Whitney’s cotton gin changed how cotton was processed, leading to a significant rise in the cotton industry. Among all the inventions of the American Industrial Revolution, the invention of the cotton gin had the biggest impact on the American economy, especially in the South. In addition, this helped other inventions in the Industrial Revolution to rise to the occasion as well. For instance, Steamboats coincided with Cotton Gins, making shipping cotton overseas faster. By the mid-1800s, the United States was the largest producer and exporter of cotton, contributing 75% of the world’s cotton production and distribution. Cotton gins today are much different from Eli’s – while they are based on the same concept, modern cotton gins are much larger, more efficient, and automated. Nowadays, cotton bundles are hauled to the cotton mills in trucks and are processed quickly without human intervention. The processed cotton bales are sent to the yarn manufacturers. Today, cotton suppliers can buy and sell cotton fabric material online in a jiffy. But until the 18thcentury, it took months of hard work to exchange cotton through trading routes. Note: Meanwhile, if you are looking for affordable cotton fabric online in India, log onto TEXchange Global and post your inquiry. The platform is designed to cater to the needs of B2B textile businesses and offers several free tools and functions that make trading easy. But, if you want to trade cotton the conventional way via an expert trader, connect withDamodar Menon International, India’s oldest and largest textile trading company with 60+ years of experience in buying and selling cotton worldwide.

How Did Eli Whitney Invent the Cotton Gin?

Eli Whiney, born on December 8, 1765, was a farmer’s son. His father was an inventor himself and a well-recognized mechanic of his time. Eli moved to Georgia after completing his studies at Yale University in 1972 and started living on a plantation named Mulberry Grove near Savannah. It belonged to Catherine Greene, the widow of an American Revolutionary War general. While staying there, he realized the hardships cotton suppliers faced while cultivating and farming cotton. Even though the cotton crop was easier to grow than food crops, separating the seeds and husks from the very soft fiber was a ridiculously strenuous process. It took an entire day for a single worker to pick the seeds from only one pound of cotton per day. This task was not only labor-intensive but also unprofitable. To address the problem, Whitney built the first mechanical Cotton Gin, which could easily remove seeds from fifty pounds of cotton (roughly 23 kilograms) daily.

How Whitney’s Cotton Gin Significantly Impacted the Industry and the Americans

Whitney’s invention, patented in 1792, revolutionized the cotton industry, particularly in the South. After the gin, processing cotton became simple and easier, providing numerous benefits to textile companies in India and overseas, such as the availability of cheaper fabric in abundance. Cotton became the most important cash crop, earning its esteemed moniker “King Cotton.” However, when Whitney died in 1825, he never thought his invention, one of the greatest in the textile sector, actually contributed to the increase of enslavement, causing significant political and economic upheavals that persisted until the civil war. buy cotton yarn onlineIt turned the fate of American slavery for the worse. Due to the gin’s streamlined process, the number of enslaved people needed by plantation owners to plant, grow, and harvest cotton and run the gin increased, which led to several debates and arguments for continuing enslavement. Fabric Supplier IndiaBetween 1790 and 1860, the number of the United States where slavery was practiced expanded from six to fifteen. During this period and until Congress banned the import of enslaved people in 1808, the Southern states had imported over 80,000 enslaved Africans. By 1860, one of every three people in the Southern states was enslaved. Whitney’s IP was finally validated in 1807 after a decade of legal tug-of-war. While Eli Whitney never profited from the Cotton Gin invention, it has played a significant role in securing the businesses of manycotton suppliers, manufacturers, and textile companies in India. And generational ways, the Cotton Gin remains one of the most significant innovations that altered American history.

MAY 7, 2023~World’s largest solid oxide electrolyzer begins producing hydrogen~

World’s largest solid oxide electrolyzer begins producing hydrogen (hydrogentechworld.com)

Bloom Energy has begun generating hydrogen from the world’s largest solid oxide electrolyzer installation at NASA’s Ames Research Center. This high-temperature unit produces 20–25% more hydrogen per MW than commercially demonstrated lower-temperature electrolyzers such as PEM or alkaline

https://preview.redd.it/r9j9ub5zur4b1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=8de4ed62233ef7c13a523b704dc0d2708068d3f2
This electrolyzer demonstration showcases the maturity, efficiency and commercial readiness of Bloom’s solid oxide technology for large-scale, clean hydrogen production. The 4 MW Bloom Electrolyzer™, delivering the equivalent of over 2.4 tonnes per day of hydrogen output, was built, installed and operationalized in a span of two months to demonstrate the speed and ease of deployment.
“This demonstration is a major milestone for reaching net-zero goals,” said KR Sridhar, Ph.D., Founder, Chairman and CEO of Bloom Energy. “Hydrogen will be essential for storing intermittent and curtailed energy and for decarbonizing industrial energy use. Commercially viable electrolyzers are the key to unlocking the energy storage puzzle, and solid oxide electrolyzers offer inherently superior technology and economic advantages. Bloom Energy, as the global leader in solid oxide technology, is proud to share this exciting demonstration with the world: our product is ready for prime time.”
The current demonstration expands on Bloom’s recent project on a 100 kW system located at the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL), which achieved record-breaking electrolyzer efficiency. In the ongoing project, 4,500 hours of full load operations have been completed with a Bloom Electrolyzer™, producing hydrogen more efficiently than any other process – over 25% more efficiently than low-temperature electrolysis.
The INL steam and load simulations replicated nuclear power conditions to validate full capability of technology application at nuclear facilities, and the pilot results revealed the Bloom Electrolyzer producing hydrogen at 37.7 kWh per kg of hydrogen. Dynamic testing conducted at INL included ramping down the system from 100 percent of rated power to 5 percent in less than 10 minutes without adverse system impacts. Even at 5 percent of rated load, the energy efficiency (kWh/kg) was as good or better than other electrolyzer technologies at their 100% rated capacity. These results will be presented at the Department of Energy’s Annual Review Meeting in Washington DC on 7 June 2023.
Dr. Ravi Prasher, CTO of Bloom Energy, said: “The amount of electricity needed by the electrolyzer to make hydrogen will be the most dominant factor in determining hydrogen production cost. For this reason, the efficiency of the electrolyzer, the electricity needed to produce a kilogram of hydrogen becomes the most critical figure of merit. This 4 MW demonstration at the NASA Ames Research Center proves that the energy efficiency of our large-scale electrolyzer is similar to the small-scale system tested at INL highlighting the strength of our modular architecture. The electrolyzer product is leveraging the Bloom platform knowhow of more than 1 GW of solid oxide fuel cells deployed in the field and providing approximately 1 trillion cumulative cell operating hours. The same technology platform that can convert natural gas and hydrogen to electricity can be used reversibly to convert electricity to hydrogen. With Bloom’s high-efficiency, high-temperature solid oxide electrolyzers, we are one step closer to a decarbonized future powered by low-cost clean hydrogen.”

April 5, 2022 ~Scandium emerges from the shadows~

Scandium emerges from the shadows - MMTA

https://preview.redd.it/r50wjw0vvr4b1.png?width=343&format=png&auto=webp&s=d2a2670c3411f9f5f915be5856236c16c3e938ad

Scandium has long been considered an “if” metal. If only it were available in quantity, it could transform aircraft production and fuel consumption. If only it were available in quantity, it could speed the emerging hydrogen economy. If only it were available in quantity, it could accelerate the rollout of 5G technologies. And so on.

The view has been that scandium could be used in numerous large-volume applications, if only supplies were sufficient to meet the potential demand. Manufacturers regularly cited a lack of sufficient scandium supply as the reason why they did not roll out new uses and products containing scandium.
After a near-mythic role in the 1980s (as a strengthening agent in aluminium alloys deployed in the last generation of Soviet MiG fighter aircraft and even, reputedly, in ballistic missile nosecones), scandium entered the banal in the 1990s, in sporting goods and, bizarrely, hand guns.

Bloom Energy turned the tide starting around 2010, with its introduction of fuel cells based on scandium-stabilised zirconia ceramic electrolytes. Bloom has grown rapidly and now represents perhaps 80% of the world’s annual consumption of SCANDIUM, a paltry 25t or so of oxide in 2021.

And yet, despite these rickety foundations, SCANDIUM consumption is poised to grow dramatically in the next decade, buoyed by new sources of supply and sustained by demand-side innovation.

The supply side

Let’s start with supply. Until about 2018, most scandium was supplied as a by-product in China and Russia, from uranium and titanium processing. Since then, however, much has changed.
First, Sumitomo Metal Mining built and has now commissioned a scandium recovery circuit at its Tagano Bay nickel high pressure acid leach (HPAL) plant in the Philippines. This plant recovers scandium oxalate for processing into oxide (and probably into scandium-zirconium oxide particles destined for Bloom Energy) in Japan. The plant recovers 7-8tpy of scandium oxide and when commissioned increased global supply by around 40%. Capital costs were perhaps US$5M/t of scandium oxide.
Second, the Chinese integrated titanium producer Lomon Billions has established a 20-30tpy scandium oxide facility with the potential to increase to 50tpy. The company estimates up to 100tpy of scandium oxide are available in its titanium plants using the sulphate process.
Third, in 2021, Rio Tinto commenced scandium recovery from its Sorel Tracy plant in Québec, Canada. The pilot plant can supply 3tpy of scandium oxide and cost US$6M. The site has the ability to supply an estimated 50-60tpy of oxide based on current raw material feed.
Finally, UC Rusal has both commissioned a 3tpy pilot scandium oxide plant, recovering scandium oxide from red mud deposits, and also commenced marketing and selling a range of scandium alloys (branded “ScAlution” alloys) that boast enhanced performance at low (typically 0.1%) concentrations of scandium.
Plus, it is not only Rusal that has pioneered low-scandium alloys. In the USA, Eck Industries, a specialist aluminium casting house, is commercialising cerium-based alloys in which scandium, again at low loadings, could provide additional strength as well as much reduced post-cast processing requirements.
Looking further out, there are numerous scandium projects in development, many of which should come into production around the middle of the decade, thanks to two parallel forces.
The main driver for scandium, as for so many minor metals, is vehicle electrification. There are multiple operating and development projects utilising HPAL technology to recover and separate nickel and cobalt in laterite deposits, many of which can in principle recover scandium. While the moral of Tagano Bay is that for existing plants retrofitting can be costly and low yield, there are emerging projects in Australia that are designing scandium recovery into their circuits alongside nickel and cobalt. The potential output of scandium can range from 50-100tpy or more, depending on the project.
The second driver is the heightened concerns over supply chain security for critical metals. In the EU this has led to the “ScaVanger” programme to recover scandium from titanium waste streams. In the USA, red mud scandium recovery as well as by-product scandium stand to benefit.

The demand side

The demand side is a little more complicated but nonetheless extremely positive. Bloom’s power generation business continues to grow and has surely been reinforced by severe power disruptions in the past three years in California and Texas. Moreover, Bloom has now received initial approvals for maritime power generation (IMO regulations are forcing seagoing vessels to reduce dramatically their sulphur emissions, and Bloom can facilitate this change), and Bloom is also developing its technology to run in reverse, so to speak, as a generator of hydrogen. Critically, Bloom in the past five years has managed to bring its system costs and performance under control, removing any technology-related going-concern issues.
Scandium is also a strong candidate for RF antennas able to support 5G frequencies. A typical high-end cell phone may require 100 RF filters, and in the 5G frequency range, scandium aluminium nitride is being used as the active material in these filters (called “bulk acoustic wave,” or “BAW” filters).
Aerospace is a third area of application, and while commercial aviation likely remains years away from broad use of scandium alloys, near-term use in space and autonomous aircraft is an avenue for strong potential growth of scandium alloys. The cost to place 1kg in orbit has dropped dramatically but is still of the order of US$1,000/kg, so any system weight reductions can be extremely valuable.
Electric vehicles (EVs) also offer the potential for large volumes of scandium demand. Weight reduction is the obvious reason. Lux Research has estimated a 1kg weight saving in an EV will be worth US$5 in 2030. But a second consideration is overall product cost. Scandium can reduce or potentially even eliminate the need for post-casting heat treatments, which can in some instances double the cost of an as-cast part. Thus the savings from the use of scandium alloys, especially at low scandium loadings, can be large.
In addition, as EVs shift to heat pumps in their HVAC systems, scandium can support the implementation of aluminium radiators without adding substantial system volume (as discussed by CM Group in its 2018 scandium report).
Naturally, there are other opportunities for scandium. Achieving a robust aluminium alloy able to perform at 300°C could displace large amounts of titanium, and Eck’s alloys are closing in on this goal. Maritime applications, especially in the military arena but also in autonomous vessels and ferries, could embrace scandium thanks to its greatly enhanced anti-corrosion impact in aluminium. Passenger jets are also a market that is likely to happen at some point.

Most important, perhaps, is the fact that well financed firms have entered the market and are able to supply up to about 100tpy each. Supply at this level is all-but-certain to create demand, and in turn this should stimulate new supply. Scandium’s chicken-and-egg problem, in which lack of supply held back demand that in turn held back supply, has been reversed, with growing (and reliable) supply poised to stimulate actual demand, that in turn will pull through new supply, and transform scandium from “if” to “when”.

SCANDIUM PAGE # 246 Briefing on the Establishment of Domestic Scandium Processing Facilities in the United States

The committee believes the United States industrial base for the supply and processing of the critical mineral scandium has significant vulnerabilities. The committee also believes that the United States should seek to eliminate dependence on Chinese and Russian sources of scandium, with support from allies and partners. Accordingly, public and private sectors should cooperate closely to establish scandium processing facilities in the United States. Therefore, the committee directs the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the Secretary of Commerce, to provide a briefing to the House Committee on Armed Services not later than May 1, 2023, on public and private sector activities, working with allied nations, to establish scandium processing facilities in the United States, especially facilities based on more efficient, cleaner, and less energy intensive technologies. This briefing will also include how these processing facilities will help the United States reduce dependence on and compete more effectively with China and Russia.

Exploring global supply and demand of scandium oxide in 2030 - ScienceDirect

Incorporation of scandium in materials has environmental benefits across multiple industrial sectors, particularly in decarbonization of energy. One pathway to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions is to generate electricity using hydrogen or synthetic liquid fuels, which are more efficient than combustion engines and easily used in co-generation of electricity and heat (IEA, 2019). The functional technology is a fuel cell. A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) produces electricity by oxidizing an energy carrier. The standard SOFCs produced by Bloom Energy are refrigerator-sized and input liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons (methane or biogas) to produce 100 kW of power. These cells process natural gas, biogas, or hydrogen to generate electricity with higher efficiency; up to two times higher compared to a gas-fired power station with efficiency of only 33–48% (Deepika et al., 2018). They are typically used to produce electricity and heat on-site for large buildings (Bloom Energy, 2021a). Currently, SOFC producers (e.g., Bloom Energy) utilize yttrium-stabilized zirconia and a scandia-stabilized zirconia in electrolytes; however, there are benefits of utilizing scandium over yttrium. Use of scandia-stabilized zirconia increases electro-conductivity and decreases operation temperature, resulting in higher efficiency and reliability (Deepika et al., 2018; Laguna-Bercero et al., 2009). Spurred by carbon reduction and global renewable energy initiatives, Bloom Energy is expanding its partnership worldwide (Bloom Energy, 2020, 2021b), resulting in increased demand in the SOFC market and scandium oxide required to produce SOFC boxes (Weinstein et al., 2018).
Scandium also has potential for light-weighting (alloys), which is important for improving fuel economy as it requires less energy to transport lighter materials. Currently, transportation contributes 27% to total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and 14% globally (EPA, 2022; IEA, 2022b). The Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards require vehicle manufacturers to continuously increase fuel efficiency (NHTSA, 2022). One approach is through light-weighting by replacing conventional aluminum alloy parts in vehicles with scandium alloys, potentially reducing 10% of vehicle mass and thus 6–8% of emissions (Joost, 2012). Given that the United States passenger vehicle emissions were 3.2 gigatonnes in 2020, this would translate to 0.2–0.3 gigatonnes of reduction (IEA, 2022a). In the United States, the Build Back Better agenda mandates 50% of new vehicles in 2030 must be EVs (The White House, 2021). To push emission reductions further than electric vehicle adoption, light-weighting should be considered. If legislation mandated regulation like Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards for EVs, there will be further reductions in energy demand. Lighter scandium alloys serve to reduce energy demand from transportation, which directly aids to mitigate climate change induced by automobiles.
Another example of light-weighting is for commercial airplanes. The bionic partition structure is a wall partition between crew members and passengers, which also serves as an emergency stretcher and foldable seating for crew members (Airbus, 2016). Current commercial airplane's partition structures are bulky and heavy, weighing approximately 63 kg (Lau, 2016). Airbus and AutoDesk collaborated and successfully produced a 30 kg bionic partition structure using Scalmalloy®, a proprietary aluminum-magnesium-scandium alloy (APWORKS GmbH, 2015; Rhodes, 2015). Replacement of 4 conventional partition structures per A320 plane in commercial aircraft with Scalmalloy® structures could save up to 465,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year (Airbus, 2016).
Despite scandium's potential role in meeting future sustainability goals, historically and currently, scandium is under-utilized because of its low supply and high cost due to its nature as a by-product. Prices of scandium oxide ranged from $3,800–5,000 per kg from 2013 to 2020 (Gambogi, 2017, 2020, 2021), placing scandium among the most expensive elements in production. High prices and low supply are due in part to its production as a co-product - production is dependent on the demand of other primary metals it is mined with. For example, when there is an increase in scandium demand and price, supply does not respond instantaneously because producers need to increase production of the primary products. This leads to price volatility. Scandium oxide is produced as a co-product due to its sparse concentration in ore, which makes it uneconomical to mine alone. It has been extracted as a co-product with iron ore, other rare earths, titanium, and zirconium in China; uranium in Kazakhstan and Ukraine; apatite (phosphorus) and uranium in Russia; and nickel in the Philippines (Gambogi, 2021). The global production of scandium oxide was 14–23 tonnes (15–25 tons) per year in 2020 (Gambogi, 2021), which was small in comparison to 220,000 tonnes (240,000 tons) of global rare earths oxide per year (Cordier, 2022) and 68 million tonnes (75 million tons) of aluminum per year (Lee Bray, 2022).
Scandium appears to continue as a co-product in the future, for the most part. Mining companies expect scandium to be a minor co-product from mining other metals such as nickel, cobalt, titanium, niobium, etc. (Clean TeQ Holdings Limited, 2018; NioCorp Superalloy Materials, 2019; Platina Resource Limited, 2021; Wang et al., 2020). There is one exception in New South Wales, Australia by Scandium International Mining Corporation, whose primary product is scandium oxide (Scandium International Mining Corp, 2020). For consumption, SOFCs by Bloom Energy are the main scandium oxide consumer with 74% of total global consumption (CM Group, 2018). A typical Bloom Energy server box of 100 MW contains 13–15 kg of scandium oxide and costs $700,000–800,000 in 2010 (Ecclestone, 2020; Jenkins, 2010). Before subsidies, Bloom Energy servers cost approximately $0.14 per kilowatt-hour of electricity compared to $0.10 per kilowatt-hour of retail power price on the U.S. national grid (Helman, 2020). Although sufficient and reliable supply play an important role in other sectors (e.g., SOFCs, commercial aerospace), price is crucial in adoption in other sectors (e.g., sporting goods, beverage cans). Abstract continues....

https://www.niocorp.com/niocorp-demonstrates-higher-niobium-recovery-rates/
Potential New Forms of Niobium Products and Potential Markets
NioCorp’s new process approach, which incorporates a chlorination step to improve niobium and titanium separation and purification, also has demonstrated NioCorp’s ability to potentially produce three different niobium products: (1) ferroniobium; (2) niobium chloride; and (3) niobium oxide.NioCorp had previously planned to make ferroniobium, which is used by the steel industry to produce high-strength low-alloy steel alloys. Those alloys are used in the construction, automotive and transport, aerospace and defense, oil and gas, and other industries. Niobium is a $3.3 billion per year global market but is currently served by only three major niobium producers in two countries.Niobium chloride would likely be converted by NioCorp into niobium oxide, but niobium chloride is also used in glass and ceramic manufacturing.Niobium oxide is critical to multiple applications, including niobium-lithium-ion batteries, superalloys, superconducting applications, capacitors, specialized optics, and many others. Its use in niobium-lithium-ion batteries is considered by current niobium producers as one of the fastest growing prospective global niobium markets

Demonstration Plant Shows New Recovery Process May Double NioCorp’s Titanium Production per Tonne of Ore as well as Produce a Higher Purity Product that May Command Higher Market Prices
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (May 26, 2023) – NioCorp Developments Ltd. (“NioCorp” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ:NB) (TSX:NB) is pleased to announce that it has successfully demonstrated an ability to potentially double the recovery of titanium from each tonne of ore the Company expects to mine at its Nebraska-based Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project (the “Project”), once project financing is obtained and the commercial plant is constructed. The new process is expected to produce a purer form of titanium that may command a higher price than is assumed in NioCorp’s June 2022 feasibility study for the Project (the “Feasibility Study”). NioCorp’s demonstration plant in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, has shown that the Company’s new and improved recovery process can likely achieve an 83.7% rate of overall titanium recovery to final product. This compares to a 40.3% titanium recovery rate in NioCorp’s previous process approach. This new result points to a potentially large increase in the amount of titanium that NioCorp can potentially produce at currently planned rates of mining

2023.06.08 12:23 Alternative_Cat_717 Should I apply this upcoming cycle?

Hey folks, as the title suggests I am considering applying to graduate school this fall cycle. I graduated undergrad in May of 2022 and have been working full-time research ever since. I started my research journey at a molecular core facility sophomore year of college, eventually making my way into a behavioral neuroscience lab at a well respected institution. I worked in this lab for a total of 2.5 years (including undergrad and postgrad). A couple of months into my postgrad life I realized I wasn’t extremely passionate about behavioral neuroscience and felt that molecular sciences aligned better with my interests. With the support of my PI, I was able to land a research position in a cancer lab at an Ivy League university. I’m really happy with the research I do in this lab and want to pursue this field during my PhD. However, I am unsure if I am a competitive applicant for graduate school.
For background:
I’m an underrepresented minority (hispanic), first-gen, 22M. Was set on pursuing an MD/PhD for a while during college, eventually realizing I wanted to do a PhD only. Worked as an EMT for 2+ years to gain clinical experience, geared a lot of my cv towards med school for a while. I don’t have any publications, I have 2 poster presentations at small symposiums (humanities related), and don’t have any sort of “recognition” awards for my research. I graduated from the honors college of my undergrad university (state school) magna cum laude, was very focused on research, excelled in interdisciplinary extracurriculars (awards at national conferences, etc), and even founded a social venture focused on scientific outreach to under-resourced members of my local community (mentorship, tutoring, ran a symposium, etc). Although I have no publications under my belt, I was granted the opportunity to lead my own projects during undergrad. Unfortunately due to many setbacks and the slow nature of research, I’m not sure my projects will see the light of day any time soon. I work under a postdoc in my current lab but will eventually be able to develop my own project. I feel confident about my experience as an early career researcher, but as the field gets increasingly competitive I can’t help but feel doubtful about my grad school chances. My dream would be to do my PhD at a place like Dana Farber or the Broad institute, however, the only way in is through Harvard or MIT.
Should I apply to grad school this upcoming cycle or extend my contract in my current lab and apply next year? I plan on being realistic and applying to schools I may have a shot at, while also applying to reach schools. I just want to move forward with my career and not be stuck in the postgrad loop for too long. Advice would be appreciated.
Thank you all for reading!

Now judges want to pay illegal immigrants Universal Basic Income ???

Photo above - Bird seed stores remind everyone that once you put up a bird feeder, they stop looking for their own food. Not shown - what might happen if we dole out Universal Basic Income to illegal immigrants immediately upon climbing the fence.
Progressive Texas judge suggests illegal immigrants could receive universal basic income Fox News Lina Hidalgo - Wikipedia
There's not enough money on planet earth – let alone America – to pay a universal basic income to everyone. I know that may be shocking to some people, but it's basic math.
Texas Judge Lina Hidalgo says illegal immigrants should get $500 a month. To start with. For 18 months. See link above. Since nobody can live on $500 a month, what do you think happens next?
I was prepared to launch into a rant about Judge Hidalgo being a poster girl for why judges should be elected rather than appointed. But, in fact she (they?) IS elected. By the voters of Harris county. And actually has a law degree - from Harvard, naturally. However, Hidalgo has never worked as an actual attorney for the either the prosecution or defense.
How does a person like this become a judge at all? Well, Judge Hidalgo did NOT campaign on a platform of “give away the store to illegal immigrants”. Her number one issue was “flood control”. Stop laughing, this is absolutely true. See the Wikipedia link at top, also. Ironically, Judge Hidalgo ALSO campaigned on “transparency in government”. And only AFTER winning, did she spring her hidden agenda on voters – free money for illegal immigrants. You absolutely CANNOT make up hypocrisy this bizarre.
In one sense I get it. Poor child born to nothing in the cocaine infested hell-hole which is Bogota Colombia. She escapes to Mexico City. Then flees Mexico City to the USA. Keeps her nose clean – passes the citizenship test. Gets a Harvard scholarship. It must be jarring to go from having nothing at all to getting a free ride at Harvard, eh? That opportunity should be available to EVERYONE, she concludes. Well, Judge Hidalgo figures we can start down the yellow brick road with $500 monthly basic income checks for illegal immigrants. Will this assuage her sense of guilt for striking it rich?
Judge Hidalgo of course has no degree in math. Or economics. She does have an undergrad degree political science. In addition to that Harvard Law diploma. She never set foot in a courtroom before she was put in charge of one. And she never breathed a whisper about her real political agenda.
Apparently Judge Hidalgo hasn't fixed the flooding in Texas either, but that's a topic for another day. How would judges prevent floods, anyway? I withdraw the question – there MUST be a clause somewhere in the Texas constitution that guarantees the right of residents to experience dry dusty weather and avoid rain, eh? The right to bear tumbleweeds?
Look - I don't personally have an advanced degree math or economics, either. But I could cite a dozen economists thru online links who say that paying abled bodied people to do nothing is a bad idea. Above and beyond there being no way on earth to afford it.
The problem is basic psychology – if you give away stuff for free, people lose interest in providing for themselves.
If you doubt this logic, go visit your local “Wild Birds Unlimited" store. The staff there will remind you that buying a feeder to help the birds is a long-term commitment. Because once you start feeding them, they forget how to find their own food. And, of course, you can count on attracting WAY more birds to your back yard than ever would have come there in the first place.

2023.06.08 12:14 Intrepid_Log9279 AITA for suggesting I should be the one contacting estate agents

I am from the UK and my partner and I live together. Our current lease is coming to an end in 2 months so we're looking for somewhere else as our current apartment isn't in a great area. I work full time while my gf works part time while finishing university but by the time we move into a new property she will be working full time as university will have finished.
My gf has been contacting etate aganets about apartments while I'm at work and most of them specify no students and they have a box to tick to say whether you're a student or not. Sicne my gf is the one contacting the estate agents she's been saying yes she is but there isn't anywhere to explain that she own't be when we move in so we're just getting rejected despite hitting the income requirements. I told her she should start putting my name down so she can tick no to being a student or wait for me to finish work and I'll do it. She refused and said it shouldn't be a problem since she's not oging to be a student much longer. I pointed out it is already a problem sicne we've been turned down from multiple apartments because of it.
She said it's like I don't trust her to be able to contact the estate agents but I tried explaining that it's not that but since she refuses to say she's not a student and refuses to put my name down instead then she should wait for me so I can contact the estate agents since we'll have a better chance of hearing back since I am not a student. She just repeated that it seemed like I didn't trust her to contact the state agents
AITA for suggesting I should contact the estate agents instead of my partner?

2023.06.08 12:00 AutoModerator Daily r/LawnCare No Stupid Questions Thread

Please use this thread to ask any lawn care questions that you may have. There are no stupid questions. This includes weed, fungus, insect, and grass identification. For help on asking a question, please refer to the "How to Get the Most out of Your Post" section at the top of the sidebar.
Check out the sidebar if you're interested in more information on plant hardiness zones, identifying problems, weed control, fertilizer, establishing grass, and organic methods. Also, you may contact your local Cooperative Extension Service for local info.
How to Get the Most out of Your Post:
Include a photo of the problem. You can upload to imgur.com for free and it's easy to do. One photo should contain enough information for people to understand the immediate area around the problem (dense shade, extremely sloped, etc.). Other photos should include close-ups of the grass or weed in question: such as this, this, or this. The more photos or context to the situation will help us identify the problem and propose some solutions.

2023.06.08 11:57 Skullknight933 My thoughts on CoM Archolos (SPOILERS)

For the past 2 weeks or so I've been absolutely munching away on this amazing experience. My final playtime clocked around exactly 70 hours and I loved every minute of it. I really took my time with this mod because God knows how long it will take before we can get a gothic experience that can match the quality of the Original games.
I can safely say that as a fan of the gothic franchise for the last 15 years personally, this game is an absolute gem and speaks volumes about the passion the community has for the franchise. The experience felt so authentic to me that it's a damn shame this will probably never get any official recognition (as in official acceptance into the canon of The Gothic Universe, even tho the current state of the canon is in absolute shambles since the last two games).
Favourite aspects where definitely the added lore, world building especially the focus on Adanos worship and the relation of the Island states with the Mainlaind and The King. Another thing is the improvements to the G2 Notr progression and gameplay. Compared to Notr the progression is more forgiving but still brutal when it needs to be. However the game still allows for experimentation which is very welcomed imo, makes the progression and challenge curve way more satisfying to overcome whereas sometimes in G2 Notr if your character was not perfectly planned you could still hit walls in the endgame.
Story and Voice Acting is also absolutely stellar, despite me being a non polish speaker I was very well immersed because the VA is that good, Highly recommend using the polish VA and turning on the subtitles of your preferred language ! The Story is where I have a few minor complaints, firstly is probably to do with the main hook for Marvin - which is finding his brother, where I feel like I personally didn't care that much for Jorn. I was more so driven by the plot of discovering who the Kidnapper was rather then actually finding Jorn but still it isint a huge deal. Some of the twists at key moments of the story were also well done, I didn't see them coming even though there is subtle foreshadowing. All the different factions and guilds are very well fleshed out and deep as you'd expect them to be in a gothic game and climbing the ranks of your guild of choice to unlock new Armor and Gear is satisfying as always. All in all lots of good stuff !
The ending is kinda lukewarm for me, on one hand I appreciate the witcher style format they chose to follow, but on the other hand the final conclusion which is kinda the same for everyone - of Marvin going to the VoM and becoming the Character of Scar in G1 just dosent sit quite well with me, I understand the team probably wanted to make this as self contained as possible so as to avoid retcons but I feel like an Ambiguous ending for Marvin would have been better, after all this is set 10 years before G1 and I feel like relegating all the work they did on this character to a sidenote in G1 is underwhelming imo.
That's really it tho, besides from two arguably pretty subjective and minor things I really loved my time with this, gonna take a break from this until the 2.0 update drops and then do a second playthrough siding with the Merchants Guild, maybe even end up joining the Ring Of Water towards the end !

2023.06.08 11:54 Tech-eon Work Fire Training vs University Classes (NSW)

Hi everyone so I'm in NSW and work in an aged care facility and at the same I also go to University. I just got a message from my workplace stating that I have a fire training session on a day where I have majority of my classes. (Yes out of all the days out of the week, it had to be the day that I crammed all my classes on, so I could work a job on almost all other days if required).
But since I have most of my classes on that day, if I skip the day I'll fall behind a lot and wont be able to catch up fully without sacrificing the low amounts of sleep I already get. (I'll be working for 5/7 days until the day with all my classes; and the 2/7 of those days is when I have lectures to watch as well, so not too helpful).
Now I'm not able to skip the training session as it's mandatory and I've been told that I would most likely be losing my job if I don't go to it, even though I made it clear that that specific day is the only major day that I'm 100% available for anything work related. I've also heard that a few other coworkers also have similar situations where they have prior arrangements and are finding it hard to come to the training session.
Is there any legal pathway that I(and potentially other coworkers as well) would be able to follow if I decide to skip on the training session and then they fire me, or if not; is there any way around this where I could do the fire training (potentially in the case that maybe all coworkers say no and they have to reschedule it?) AND not miss any classes?

Any advice (both legal and non-legal) would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
