2023.03.27 01:59 ChrisCummins Review of the Chamonix Half Frame dark slide

I am frequently asked how I take panoramic photos on my 4x5. Here is some detailed information that I previously shared on the "Panoramic Film Photography" group on Facebook, which I have expanded upon and updated here. Enjoy!
Overview
This is a review of the Chamonix Half Frame dark slide that absolutely no one asked for, but I would have found useful back when I was researching these things.
You may think there isn't much to say about an inert 13g sheet of carbon fibre. It's waterproof (probably), it doesn't take batteries, and in a pinch you could probably use it as a small shovel. More interestingly, it lets you squeeze two frames onto a single sheet of 4x5 with an aspect ratio somewhere between 2.5:1 and 3:1.
The exact image size is 45mm x 121mm. Compared to the 56 x 175mm image from a 6x17 camera, the image area is 1.8x smaller, though at 2400dpi this still gives you a scan of 11400 x 4250 px. Here is a comparison on the light table.
Usage
It's easy to use a half frame dark slide. You compose using either the top or bottom half of the ground glass, take the shot, then either recompose using opposite half, or easier, if you have a camera with a rotating back, you can simply flip it 180 degrees and keep the same composition. For a Chamonix camera if you cut a sheet of black card exactly 65 x 128mm this will create a mask that will precisely cover the bottom half of the ground glass for top half composing.
Framing up a shot using half the ground glass typically requires a lot of rise or fall movements to prevent distortions. You'll want a true view camera - a Graflex may not give you enough wiggle room. Field cameras are typically more generous with rise than fall so you may find that composing with the top half is easier than the bottom. Note you don't need any additional lens coverage than shooting normal 4x5. It's fine for the lens to vignette in the half of the frame that will be masked.
The Charmonix dark slide is entirely unmarked so I'd recommend sticking some tape on it to differentiate it from a regular dark slide, and to indicate whether the top or bottom half of the slide is masked.
Typically, I shoot both halves of a sheet in one session, so that I have a redundant frame for backup. In cases where I'm not planning on shooting the "other" half of a split sheet, I make sure to make a note of whether the top/bottom has been exposed to prevent accidental double exposure.
Drawbacks
There is only one serious downside to using this dark slide that I have discovered. Because it isn't the full width of a regular dark slide, it is easy to push it in at an angle, which causes the bottom of your image to end up wonky, and eats in to your valuable image area. This is remarkably easy to do if you're not actively checking for it.
Because the dark slide doesn't exactly touch the film plane, the edge of the image is very slightly soft, inversely proportional to the focal length. See here for a comparison between a 90mm and 180mm.
Finally, using a half dark slide increases your chance of light leaks, as while inserting and removing the dark slide, only half of the light seal is covered. I have not had problems with this yet, touch wood.
Alternatives
You could buy a 6x17 back which mounts to your 4x5. I wouldn't recommend this. They are heavy, take up a lot of space in your pack, and offset the focal plane of your camera, limiting your choice of focal lengths and making movements more difficult with wide-angles.
You could buy a dedicated panoramic camera. If you want the movements of a view camera, your only options are a used Ebony 617S or a new clone (Shen Hao TFC617). If you know you only want to shoot panoramics, this is your best option. The obvious tradeoff is that these are special-purpose cameras. For some uses you may prefer the flexibility of sheet film over roll film, as it means you can customize the development for every 2 shots on a sheet of film vs every 4 shots on a roll of 120.
You could shoot a full sheet and crop. This is the method that Alex Burke (an absolutely brilliant wilderness photographer) advocates for. You should probably listen to him rather than me. It just personally doesn't suit the way I want to work. I like to get the image complete and correct before opening the shutter.
Hope that was helpful. After not getting on with my Tomiyama Art Pano 170 and selling it, I've been itching to get back into shooting panoramics, and for an extra 13g in the pack this feels like I get a "free" second camera.

2023.03.27 01:52 Stryker1050 [TOMT][Show][TV episode][1980s-1990s] A TV episode about bouncing balls in various environments.

I think it was a PBS special, maybe something to do with NOVA? I have tried searching using a bunch of these terms, but no luck. There is a guy bouncing various super balls around. I know for sure he was in a museum-like area for some of it. He was in a big triangle thing bouncing balls like a juggler. Actually there may have been more juggling in it too, but I mostly remember the bouncing balls in the triangle. He may have been in other environments too. The airing time period would have been late 80s or early 90s.

David Stockman on the Status of the Everything Bubble Created by the Fed

by David Stockman
📷 Subscribe to International Man
The Wall Street Journal recently brought word that a professor Efraim Benmelech of the finance department at Northwestern University thinks the Fed is hurting housing and the consumer too much. Opined he,
…….those higher interest rates are making mortgages more expensive and leading to fewer home sales. That leads to less spending on appliances, paint and other home goods, because people commonly buy those items ahead of a sale and after moving. “The actions of the Fed are leading to lower consumption,” he said.
You don’t say!
Then again, has it occurred to the good professor that the years and years of ultra low mortgage rates engineered by the Fed were totally unnatural, uneconomic and not sustainable?
The evidence for that is in the chart below. It shows that for most of the last three decades, the Fed drove the after-inflation or “real” interest rate on 30-year mortgages steadily lower until it actually turned negative.
Inflation-Adjusted Interest Rate on 30-Year Fixed Rate Mortgages, 1990 to 2023
📷
Stated differently, the unfolding recession is a long overdue and necessary purge of artificial economic activity stimulated and subsidized by the central bank’s own financial repression policies.
The Fed’s belated attempt to “normalize” interest rates, therefore, is not a mean-spirited policy to deliberately cause labor, manufacturing capacity and other economic resources to be idled. To the contrary, it’s a belated attempt to unshackle markets from the excesses, bubbles, malinvestments, inefficiencies and unsustainabilities that were the inherent results of decades of reckless money-printing.
One of the many bubbles created by the Fed’s relentless monetary expansion of recent years might be termed the “labor bubble”. By that we are referring to the madcap hiring undertaken by corporate HR departments in the aftermath of the Covid Lockdown disruption.
As it happened, they failed to meet staffing needs in the early days of the re-opening in 2021 owing to the fact that millions of workers had left the active labor force thanks to massive stimmies, early retirements and other welfare state inducements, along with mom and dad’s basements and checkbooks. So HR departments plunged into hiring “just in case” the re-opening boom of 2021 and early 2022 continued. In effect, they began to hoard labor.
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek admitted as much in a recent missive to employees announcing a 6% cut in the company’s workforce:
“In hindsight, I was too ambitious in investing ahead of our revenue growth. And for this reason, today, we are reducing our employee base by about 6% across the company. I take full accountability for the moves that got us here today,” the exec said.
Of course, the re-opening and stimmy boom didn’t last—notwithstanding the Fed’s massive money-pumping and monetization of the public debt issued to finance the $6 trillion of Covid bailouts.
Since the spring of 2021 when the stimmies peaked, the US economy has actually been slouching toward idle. In fact, once you strain out of the GDP numbers the one-time inventory rebuilding, which was necessitated by the drastic depletion of merchandise stocks triggered by the stimmy based consumer spend-a-thons, there is hardly any organic growth left.
As shown in the chart below, the combination of Dr. Fauci’s Virus Patrol and the Washington spenders did a real number on the business economy. First, the normal business inventory-to-sales ratio exploded to the upside during the initial lockdowns and spending collapse, and then plunged to unprecedented lows as the stimmy-fueled boom in Amazon orders drained the system of its working inventories.
Whipsaw of Business Inventory-to-Sales Ratio, 2018 to 2022
📷
Since reaching bottom in October 2021 inventories have been rebuilt to nearly normal levels, but that’s just the problem. The GDP gain reflected in the inventory rebuild is just a case of “one and done”. In fact, with the interest cost of carrying inventories now rising rapidly it is likely that the business sector restocking is over.
As we indicated, once you peel back the effect of inventory restocking, the stagnation of the US economy is starkly apparent. For instance, in the case of the industrial production index, which covers all of manufacturing, energy, mining and utility output, the level in March 2022 stood at 103.5.
As it happened, the index posted at a nearly identical 103.4 in December. Call it nine months of “growth” to nowhere!

Needless to say, none of this madness would have happened without the enabling hand of the Federal Reserve.
Editor’s Note: The truth is, we’re on the cusp of an economic crisis that could eclipse anything we’ve seen before. And most people won’t be prepared for what’s coming.

2023.03.27 01:26 brosenz Lease deal for a 2022 WRX Premium

Lease deal for a 2022 WRX Premium
A few weeks ago went to the dealership to get a lease for a 2022 WRX base, leveraging the Subaru official lease promotion for the 2022 WRX. The promotion is $355/month + $2,655 down + Taxes & Fees with $20K residual (thinking on buying the car at the end of the lease) and 10K miles/year. Taxes and Fees are around $2,950 where I leave, meaning the approximate total lease cost for 3 years with the SOA promotion for a Base WRX is $355*36 + $2655 + $2950 = $18,385.
When I got there the Base was gone, and they only had a Premium which has an MSRP of $2,500 more than the base, using the same SOA lease promotion my approximate total cost would have been for the Premium $18,355 + $2,500 * .35 (lease factor) + $75 taxes (for the extra cost) cost = $19,305.
I told them that I wasn't going to pay more for the premium because I wanted a base, and I was walking out the door, they call me back and after some back and forth, I got a deal for the Premium for $15,365 total cost out the door, with $20K residual. I would have gotten even a better deal with purchase instead of lease, due to the 2.9% APR promotion, but this is my first manual car, and I wasn't sure If I would keep it after the 3 years.
After a few weeks of driving it, I am having so much fun, as of now, definitely a keeper, proud owner. Sorry for the long story, but seems a good time to get a 2022 WRX at close to pre-pandemic prices. Picture of the car of course:

2023.03.27 01:24 tarvolon Tarvolon Reads a Magazine (or Three): Reviews of Clarkesworld, GigaNotoSaurus, and F&SF (March 2023)

In January, I started a new series, which I hope to continue all year, in which I read and review sci-fi/fantasy magazines. I’ve settled on three publications to follow this year: my two favorites from 2022 and a third that has been a titan of the genre for decades. I’ve yet to have a month without at least three stories I really loved among these three publications, and March was no different. So let’s get to it.

Clarkesworld

In my eyes, the March issue of Clarkesworld was something close to their median issue: one story I loved, a bunch of stories I liked, and one story that didn’t totally click for me. Issues like this don’t have me struggling to pick a favorite, but with so much to like, they’re exactly the sort of months that keep me a loyal reader. And I suppose it doesn’t hurt that my favorite story in the March issue was my favorite Clarkesworld piece of the first quarter of 2023.
The opening piece, Love in the Season of New Dance by Bo Balder, promised just the kind of alien communication story that I usually love. But while the lead’s cicada-like interlocutor’s obsession with completing the mating ritual before death may be realistic, it wasn’t necessarily the storyline I was hoping for. In fairness, I’m not sure the lead was hoping for it either, and there’s an interesting story to be found in her trying to make the best of an observation much more intimate than expected, but I nevertheless found it difficult to connect.
Angela Liu’s Pinocchio Photography blends the story of a college student trying to choose a career—amidst both social and parental pressures—with an exploration of pictures and memory. They come together in the form of a job photographing reanimated cadavers participating in those family moments they no longer lived to see. The narrative was enough to hold my interest, but it was the fascinating discussion of family and benevolent fictions that really made it worth the read.
Fiona Moore’s The Spoil Heap is an excellent tale of a former coder finding a robot on a trash heap after a technological apocalypse sent society back decades. Extensive flashbacks establish the character’s pre-apocalyptic life, informing both the catastrophe itself and the lead’s response to her present-day find. Probably not a story that will shock veteran readers, but it’s well-executed and a lot of fun.
The issue’s sole novelette, Shari Paul’s Bek, Ascendent, tells the story of a woman who until recently thought herself the lone survivor of her people’s destruction being sent to support their resettlement and finding herself thrown in with old friends and old enemies. It’s a short novelette that neither surprises with the twists nor fully explores all the nuances of the sprawling empire taking charge of smaller people groups recovering from disaster—though it does gesture at more going on under the surface—but it’s a plenty engaging read nonetheless.
Shih-Li Kow’s Failure to Convert takes up the story of clones who must jump through hoop after hoop after hoop to earn the recognition of legal personhood, in a society becoming increasingly prejudiced against them. It’s a well-written and often chilling piece that offers more questions than answers.
My favorite piece in my issue, and my favorite Clarkesworld piece of the year so far, came from an outstanding new writer who appeared thrice on my 2022 favorites list and is already starting on 2023. Isabel J. Kim’s Zeta-Epsilon is a heartfelt piece about a man raised from birth to provide a human bridge to the ineffable mind of a starship. It opens with a puzzle box—why did Zeta commit suicide, and why didn’t Epsilon prevent it?—before diving into Zeta’s childhood, his intense connection with the ship, and the aspects of his life that became untenable. It’s a fascinating story with emotional depth and even a pinch of humor. This one is the whole package.
After the intensity of “Zeta-Epsilon,” the next story continues the AI theme with a little more levity. Louise Hughes’ AI Aboard the Golden Parrot tells of a sentient theme park pirate ship that has taken to the seas collecting robot castaways. There’s still some tension in their mission to rescue imprisoned drones, and the details turn into a bit of a whirlwind at time, but it’s a fun read all told.
The fiction section of the March issue closes with perhaps the most mind-bending piece in the set, Love is a Process of Unbecoming by Jonathan Kincade. The dreamlike narrative is told mostly from the perspective of an organism that has infected and perhaps possessed the human who would ordinarily be considered the main character. It starts as a tense survival story from an upside-down angle, with the perspective then widening to glimpse the family struggles that have led to the story’s main action. Utterly disorienting but skillfully told, I suspect this story would reward a second read.
March’s non-fiction section opens with a dive into the parallels between certain real-world plants and famous fiction landscapes, such as The Book of Koli, Annihilation, and Semiosis. The two interviews are with Nadia Afifi and the people behind Galactic Journey—a fanzine I’d heard of but didn’t know much about. I have to say, I love their concept, and I also love a pair of R.A. Lafferty stories appearing as honorable mentions on their 1960s Best of the Year posts.
Finally, Neil Clarke closes with an editorial on the difficulty of surviving as a genre magazine—particularly in light of Amazon’s decision to end their subscription program—and the decisions Clarkesworld is making in an effort to move forward as sustainably as possible.

GigaNotoSaurus

GigaNotoSaurus rings in the month with what will be among their shortest pieces of the year, Once Measured, Twice Cut by Anna Martino, in which a half-human pharmacist in post-war England does his best to help both his human and his secret winged patients. It’s easy to read and immensely satisfying for readers who enjoy fantasy healers just trying to help people. Perhaps it all comes together a hair too neatly, but I was still happy to read it.

Fantasy & Science Fiction

After the January/February issue overwhelmed me with extended pieces tied to existing SFF universes, the March/April issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction was a breath of fresh air. The sixteen stories included just two novelettes and no novellas, and while a couple were situated within existing mythologies, this didn’t provide a true barrier to entry.
Let’s start with the pair of excellent novelettes, both of which brought their fair share of whimsy. Peter S. Beagle’s The Weremouse of Millicent Bradley Middle School has something of the flavor of an urban legend becoming all too real, with a witchy and vindictive math teacher terrorizing her students, who must either grovel or find a way to fight back. Sometimes a story just doesn’t have to break new ground to be an utter delight. Also delightful is Eleanor Arnason’s Mr. Catt, telling of the adventures of a six-foot, bipedal feline—in a world mostly consisting of ordinary humans, mind you—who decides on a whim to acquire a dragon. As you might imagine, things don’t go quite as expected, but they go wrong in an extremely entertaining way.
Circling back to the start of the issue, we find two short stories by authors I’d enjoyed immensely in longform and was excited to see here. Lavie Tidhar’s The Station Master offers an entertaining bit of slice-of-life in his Central Station universe, whereas Tade Thompson’s The Sweet in the Empty provides a heart-pounding tale of family and revenge in a fantastical long-ago Arabia. I’m not usually a reader of sword-and-sorcery, but I expect those who are will like this one even more than I did—which was quite a bit!
Continuing the theme of classic fantasy stories well-executed is Jonathan Louis Duckworth’s Spookman, the story of a man who can see spirits of the dead on a mission to find a runaway in a haunted forest. A fun read with an eminently satisfying conclusion.
Switching from fantasy to sci-fi, we find my favorite short story in the issue: M.H. Ayinde’s Piggyback Girl. The Black Mirror-like premise involves an influencer signing a contract allowing her followers to literally see through her eyes. The piece does demand that readers overlook the utter lack of genre-savvy by the lead character, but the sheer intensity of what comes afterward makes up for the credulity in signing the initial contract. The social commentary is on point, and the rising panic as the lead begins to see the walls rising on all sides makes for a truly gripping read.
The latter half of the issue didn’t blow me away quite like the first half, but I still found a lot to enjoy. There were a pair of looping, twisting sci-fi tales that have both reader and characters questioning what’s real. Matthew Lebowitz’s Ouroboros—about a scientist researching technology that can bring dreams to life—was a particular favorite, and Marlon Ortiz’s Mnemonic Longings was a solid tale of a sentient spaceship processing its relationship with the only human to survive a devastating extraterrestrial conflict.
Moonlight, Wing-Wake in Fog by Rick Hollon literalizes the concept of masking one’s true self from the world, telling of a group of shapeshifters trying to keep themselves safe from implacable colonizers bent on their destruction. It’s followed by Nuzo Onoh’s “The Madding,” which should appeal to readers who like some African folklore in their horror.
Amanda Dier’s Escape Velocity is a small-scale, personal tale about the transformations one undergoes while chasing their dreams, and how they live with those transformations. It’s followed by Lauren Bajek’s prose poem Pantoum on a Generation Ship, a flash piece whose title is a wonderfully clever play on the ultimate story. I have seen other reviewers marvel at the story for following the stringent repetition structure of the Pantoum style of poetry, but as someone unfamiliar with the form, the specifics passed me by. Still, a piece well worth reading!
Marie Vibbert’s The Subway Algorithm is Half-Constructed follows grad students talking about AI projects, but it’s much more a story of learning how to interact with other people—a subject in which every major character has their own struggles. K.C. Ahia’s Solar Boy also follows a lead with a fresh STEM degree, this time an engineer scrabbling for one of the scarce jobs working on spaceships. It’s not a hard read, but it’s simultaneously a story of trans belonging, a problem-solving sci-fi, and a story of intrigue and betrayal. For a piece as short as it is, it felt to me a hair overstuffed, and I would’ve appreciated just one or two of those elements having more time to breathe.
The issue closes with a pair of fun mythopoetic stories. Kathleen Jennings’ The Five Lazy Sisters is a fairy tale about…well, five lazy sisters looking for a way out of running a ferry for their whole lives. Then E. Catherine Tobler caps the issue with Remembered Salt, about a bewitched house flying up from its forest home and seeking adventure and pieces of memory. For readers who enjoy short fairy tales without too much emotional intensity, it’s an excellent pair to finish the issue.
As always, F&SF also has poetry and reviews, and this month had a fascinating dive by Arley Song into beloved genre magazines throughout history and what became of them. It’s a good read on its own and dovetails especially nicely with Clarke’s editorial.

2023.03.27 01:05 DayZ-Doc PC US Central PVEVP Banov Winter 1PP (3pp driving) BBP (vanilla damage) Survival Focused Zombie Hordes Reduced Economy Just survivors dealing with what’s left. Very little military, mostly civilian weapons Outstanding community LOTS of Crafting Wiped March 20!

Hello Reddit,
I'd like to invite you to join my gaming community. We just wiped on March 20, 2023. The server is built around the community and not the map. DayZ is an amazing game, but after a while, maps get stale, boring and we all fade out and loose interest. On my server we will be swapping out maps from time to time to keep things interesting and fresh. Same people, same play style, same mod set (within reason), new challenges. That said, we just moved on to Banov so I expect we'll be here for a while.
The community is an older, more mature crowd and we're pretty cooperative with more of a PVE Mindset. That said PVP is legal everywhere. The threat of death should be ever present. In all, I would say that the community promotes good sportsmanship and we lack any toxic drama for which I have zero tolerance.
The Black Winter theme is really one of just regular folks making due with what's left. Although I have some amazing weapon mods in place, I've only picked out 1 or 2 civilian weapons from each to add to our theme. There are a few "item pack mods" installed as well but again, only a select couple items have made it into play.
A lot of attention has been placed on Quality of Life - both good and bad.
The economy has been reduced as follows:
Category - Usage - Reduced by %
I've offset the challenging start for freshies by adding airdrops to a few locations near the largest spawn clusters. These airdrops will contain the basics like, insulated clothing, food, medicine, and basic weapons and ammo. Enough to get you on your feet. Careful going to an air drop though, you might not be the only starving person in need..
My target audience is the mature gamer who would like to build a cozy base, do some hunting and fishing and chat with some new folks and go on some adventures. Maybe shoot at a nerd when the mood is right =)
We currently have a very solid group of regulars, mature professionals who just want to unwind after a day at work and hide from the kids while trying to get lost in the world we're building together. This is an excellent server to meet some folks and start your Banov adventure.
We do have a couple of "light" role players. Nothing to "hark who art thou" - but I think all of our game play is along the lines of, this is me and this is what I'd do in the apocalypse. Meet up conversations are usually focused on what we're doing in the game.
Quick and Dirty FAQ.
Some of my players have been giving feedback in the days since wipe; their misery is perfectly on point. The economy is a challenge, but not impossible. You will need to prioritize getting warm, fed, and hydrated first and foremost. There are no natural foods (apples, mushrooms etc cuz winter reasons) so don't waste your time looking there.
Hope to see you in game!

Icarthus 'Titan Castle' the Indestructible. A new dawn for the Space Marines (WIP)
Currently, I have managed to kitbash a new miniature, which I have officialy (and righteously) dubbed "Icarthus 'Titan Castle' the Indestructible", a walking Titan 'Weapons platform. ' Fully equipped with a movement speed of a blistering 12" per turn, Icarthus was once the noble Venerable dreadnought "Icarthus the Titan", but was seriously wounded in action. The most noble and intellectual of the Apocerathy, Librarians, Adeptus Mechanicus, Black Templars and the Chaplain have managed to reincarnate Icarthus into the body of what is righteously named 'W.I.S.P' (Weapons, Information and Strategic Platform) suit, last minute ghetto attempt to put together a large Weapons platform, which Icarthus accepted gratefully. With the blessings of the machine gods and the Emperor, Icarthus was re-united with his battle brothers in the Ultramarines, with a Weapons platform so powerful nothing short of Marneus Calgar himself could stop. Once Icarthus was re-united, his battle brothers took great care of him, and equip him with a variety of weapons from different vehicles and squadrons.
This mini is equipped with: Repulsor executioner's Macro Plasma Incinerator + Icarus rocket pod Sniper Scout's special issue 50. Cal. Sniper rifle and a devastator's Power Fist. With enough ammunition to last week's on end without failure of any systems, Icarthus was extremely grateful towards the Adeptus Mechanicus, and under the watchful eye of Guilliman, Icarthus lives to fight another day...
Opinions please, (I think Games Workshop should produce these, it was a 2 hour kitbash of a scouts with snipers, repulsor executioner and devastator squad)
