2014 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.7L w/ 8 Speed - Getting Transmission work

2023.06.10 05:50 SysError404 2014 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.7L w/ 8 Speed - Getting Transmission work

So, I took my truck to the dealership to get a manifold leak addressed and attempt to get my headlight upgrade. Walked out being told I have an internal Transmission issue, Rear diff is on borrowed time and a $15k price quote.
Picked my truck up and drove it and hour to the best Transmission shop in my area. They test drove and said, the transmission is slipping in gear 2-4, and there is some noice coming from the Rear diff. I already knew both manifolds have a leak so no surprise there.
My question, how serious is the transmission issue potentially? Could this be something that a transmission can repair or is it likely that I am looking at a full re-manufacture on mine or replacing mine completely with a re-manufactured Trans? I have no idea what noise in fro mthe rear diff means so I dont expect anyone to offer insight on that without being able to hear it themselves. I am mostly concerned with what can I expect regarding the transmission.
For what it's worth, they charge $100/hr standard labor rate, 130 for transmission work. I have a good chunk of change set aside as I was planning on buying a boat this week but wanted to make sure my truck was in good working order first. So if you feel comfortable throwing an estimate at me, it would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any information the subs Techs and Mechanics can provide.

2023.06.10 05:01 arlingtonbeach Finished the demo in a single 4 hour sitting

I have nearly 2000 hours across all FromSoft games and have tried the majority of 3D Soulslikes on the market and I have to say that Lies of P is the first one possibly since Nioh 2 that actually feels and controls like a FromSoft game. As for the people complaining about the dodge, it's so clear that this game wants you to approach combat much more like Sekiro than any Souls game with a heavy emphasis on deflecting esp against bigger enemies. The deflect window is just a lot tighter here than in Sekiro but once you get the hang of it it feels great. Am generally very impressed by the level of polish on display both in terms of optimisation/graphics and gameplay. I'll admit that I was skeptical when I first saw the trailer given how previously games like Mortal Shell, Code Vein, Thymesia have been such letdowns due to janky combat. After playing the demo I am more than sold and I can't wait to play the full game when it's out.

2023.06.10 03:20 Other_Objective650 Desperately need a car.

I desperate need a car now as I am moving forward with life and I've been borrowing a family car for 2 years after the transmissiom in my old mustang blew. I have about 20k I'm willing to spend and insurance for just about any vehicle new or old is 1800$ liability only. What car would be good, and fun. Thinking about 99-04 mustang gt (slow but fun and low miles can be had for 10-15k) 05-09 mustang gt (still somewhat slow but fun and reliable I've had 2 of these so far) 2011-2014 mustang V6 (it's a V6 but modern interior and exterior styling. But cost more than an 05-09 gt. Honda Accord/ Accord sport (look nice and comfy but having a hard time finding one that's not a rebuilt title. Subaru WRX. (4drs practical and sporty but questionable reliability). Dodge charger t (practical but also questionable reliability same with Challenger) I'd love a Corvette. But I think back seats even if hard to use is better than no back seats. Truck, Tacoma maybe. (Reliable, cheap for an older one but won't be fun to take down windy roads, bad gas mileage for little fun and no real need for a truck that adding a hitch onto a sedan won't handle) Focus ST (very few in price range but look fhn and sporty) Fiesta ST (good option but I prefer the focus version). Not really interested in suvs due to bad gas mileage and no real need for interior space. Focus base model. (Not sure if they still have transmission issues but they are cheap)

2023.06.10 02:51 john_oldcastle My Favorite Dead (vol.2): 6/21/80 Anchorage, Alaska (long post)

6/21/80 Anchorage, Alaska
In order to talk about the Grateful Dead in Alaska in 1980, I need to first talk about me living in Puerto Rico in 1995. That summer I had been sent to Puerto Rico for my first duty assignment in the Navy. Not a bad duty assignment for a 20 year old. I was still onboarding to my new assignment when Garcia died—it kinda sucked being all by myself for that, but my barracks roommate was cool and let me bump the Dead nonstop for a few days.
Now, my roommate, Jason, was this wonderfully weird, big ol’ cornfed farm dude from South Dakota who liked Star Trek, jazz, and a copious amount of rum and cokes. We of course got on like gangbusters. At one point we went in on an “island car” together: a 1979 Dodge Aspen that would only start with a push start—we were constantly looking for hills to park on! I think we paid like 200 bones for it. Anyway, a few days later he lumbers in and chucks a book at my head, “Hey Mitchell, I saw this at the Exchange and thought of you” (Jason and I used to call everybody ‘Mitchell’ due to our love of both the terrible Joe Don Baker movie and the hilarious MST3K episode). He had gotten me Steve Silberman’s “Skeleton Key: Dictionary for Deadheads.” Cool!
So, as I’m skimming through the book, I notice an ad for a “Grateful Bed and Breakfast” in Luquillo that was like 20 minutes away. I call the place and talk to the owner—a New Yorker named Marty. “Come on up my man, lets's hang!”
It was a neat little rustic B&B—rustic being the operative word. But it was a cool place and Marty became a good friend. Since I didn’t know any other Heads down there, Marty and the Grateful Bed and Breakfast became a kind of sanctuary. It was nice to forget about military BS every once in a while. I would go up a few times a month to hang out, listen to tunes, help him hang drywall in the guest bungalows—stuff like that. He had been some kind of political advisor or strategist or something, but had lost his taste for politics. The B&B was his way of starting over, engaging with the things he loved: namely the Dead and making people happy. Marty also had a couple of hundred tapes which he graciously let me go through over the weeks and months.
6/21/80 is one of the first I taped from his collection, and it became one of my favs. I love the idea of the Dead playing the solstice in Alaska. What a cool adventure! But aside from all that, this show brings the goods. It is hot!
This show finds the band almost smack dab in the middle of their existence—15 years behind and 15 years left to go. I am rarely disappointed in 1980 Dead, and I think this is a tip tier show. It flows. It's cheeky. It swings. There are interesting song placements—ending the first set with a bad ass Feel Like a Stranger and starting the second set w/ a Big Railroad Blues—it all works. The playing on this date seems effortless. The transitions are on point and the band is locked in. And the energy is A+. It must have been a gas experiencing this show!
Now look, is this my favorite Sugaree? (*yes, but sometimes it’s 5/19/77 and sometimes it’s both and sometimes it’s some other version, probably from 1977). But yeah, this Sugaree is dope!
Lazy Lightnin> Supplication is super tight. Jerry on fire.
The real centerpiece for me is the Terrapin>Playin>Drums>Space>Truckin>Stella Blue. Did I mention this show flows? This whole seamless segment is so incredibly satisfying and beautiful. This is why we listen to this band, for inspired segments like this.
I don’t think this is a show that gets that much attention, but I would rate it as a highlight from a very good Dead year. Other shows from this year rightly get a lot of attention: everyone knows about the Warfield and Radio City Music Hall runs in the fall. Gainesville and Lewiston Maine are other popular shows from this year that rock, but for me this show hits just right. I don’t think it’s been released officially, but there are good auds and sbds available. My original copy was a good aud—probably the first good aud I ever got. I linked a really sweet matrix.
This is a good sipping beer on the back porch show. The jams are intense, but go down smooth. I always like putting this on for cookouts and back porch hangs. I can sometimes catch glimpses of those past days too. Not often, but sometimes I can conjure those days in my mind's eye: cookouts at Luquillo Beach, hanging w/ Marty listening to the Dead, or adventuring w/ Jason listening to this tape in that broke dick Aspen, driving up to El Yunque to swim at the Angelito swim hole, drinking rum and being young.
I suppose I miss hanging w/ Marty the most from those days, simply because I will never see him again. In 1997 I was sent to the Fleet and overseas deployment. Sadly, I heard a few years later that Marty had tragically died in a fire at his bed and breakfast. But this show doesn’t make me sad. It makes me happy that the music exists, that those times really did happen, and that the music and memories endure. The gorgeous Brokedown Palace is the perfect coda to this stellar show.
Going home, going home, by the waterside I will rest my bones, listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul. RIP Marty

2023.06.09 22:19 90Cav Used “beater” truck (buy neighbor’s Dodge)?

I’ve been casually looking for a older used truck to use mainly for household chores (taking refuse to the dump; garden supplies) and for occasional trips where I want to take a couple of smaller kayaks along. Mostly have been looking at 1st gen Silverados with an extended cab. I’m not too picky and really just want something fairly rust-free and without major engine/transmission problems. Cosmetics don’t concern me at all. I can be flexible on price but really want to keep things cheaper and in the “beater” category (my sweet spot was 5k but am having mixed results).
My very dependable and trustworthy next door neighbor just got a new truck and offered to sell me his old one- a 2001 Dodge Ram single cab with the 5.9 Magnum V8 and auto transmission. The truck has virtually no rust, a few dings here and there (cracked dash and some wear and tear) but is in overall good condition for what I’m looking at. The brakes may need some work but I am ok with that. He is asking 3400 (which sounds very fair), but the truck does 233k miles.
I had really wanted an extended cab before, but am entertaining this because it’s coming from a trustworthy source who maintained it pretty well.
Anyone have guidance on if this would be good idea or a bad one?

2023.06.09 22:06 Hairy_Inspection_517 Engine Scraping?

Hey all, I’ve been having an issue with my 1990 NA6 MT. Essentially, at certain rpm ranges, the engine is producing a metallic scraping noise that sounds an awful lot like metal scraping metal. I know the noise isn’t coming from the transmission or the differential, as revving the engine at a complete stop in neutral produces this noise.
The rpm ranges are from about 2000 rpm and up, as well as about 500 and below (This only occurs on takeoff if I get too excited with my clutch pedal). Idling speeds + the range in between 500-2000 sound clear, but as I’m constantly shifting in the 2500 rpm range and having to increase revs to be on the highway, this noise is getting to be quite worrisome. I’ve only been driving it like this since last night (as of posting this), and only to drive home. The noise has not subsided overnight. No modifications or maintenance has been done in recent days, aside from a 2000-mile-old DIY oil change and a bit of coolant added last week. I am always thorough with other maintenance.
For additional info, here’s what I’ll add about the engine
Pros: -<140,000 original miles -~10 year old port and polish (more on this later) -Almost never had an issue regarding it’s structural integrity
Cons: -I suspect valve stem seals are very worn and tired (Shows all telltale symptoms; blue smoke on start-up, plugs fouling over night, smoke clears after a few thousand revolutions etc.) -Piston rings may also be an issue although I’m more doubtful of this than the valve seats -Suspected head gasket failure somewhere in the coolant paths, as coolant slowly disappears over the course of a few weeks (No external leaks ascertained) -The port and polish wasn’t exactly done by the most reputable people and had to be redone, but not only did this happen more than 10 years ago with negligible issues to date, but engine performance hasn’t changed at all since the job was redone.
I’m going to investigate and address what I can, but I’m not mechanically inclined enough to ascertain my issue and fix it accordingly. I hope someone here can at least help me move in the right direction.

2023.06.09 11:39 mybigram69 96 dodge ram 46re transmission

Hello everyone, I seem to have lost 1st and 5th gear (from what I can tell) a couple days ago. I have recently replaced the governor pressure sensor, output speed sensor, throttle position sensor, and fluid with no issues, just one day started acting up. It takes off just fine, but i can't feel it grabbing gears 2 through 4, however it's smooth while getting up to speed. At highway speeds rpms are almost 3k and it usually is at 2k at 70mph which tells me im not in 5th. When i shift on the column down from D to 2 to 1 i cant feel the gear changes from D to 1. Thoughts on what to check? Thanks.

2023.06.09 09:33 magunade Installing entire AC system in my car, in over my head?

So I recently bought a 2000 Dodge/Plymouth Neon, the second I've owned actually lol. But this one didn't come with AC, which I took as my cue to learn about the AC system. How hard could it be, right? Right?!? "Just pop all the parts inside, toss the fluids into it that it needs and I'm set, probably" is what I said to myself. Except the more I learn about it the more doubtful I am. And finding info on this particular subject isn't too easy-- installing an entire new system into a vehicle, that is.
The car is even already wired for AC though! Many of the mounting brackets and such are already in place... So it's really just the actual PARTS that are missing. That was a big reason I felt the inflated level of confidence that I did lol.
I've already begun gutting other Neons at my local junkyard and have about half the parts. I guess I'm wondering a few things.
First, can I just install a few parts at a time as money allows?
Second, if yes to that, once the compressor is on, is it okay to have the belt attached to it before the rest of the system is in place? I don't want to damage components that are already old (and expensive). But finding the right belt for this model vehicle that DOESN'T have a compressor has been an exercise in frustration so it'd be neato if I could just pop a compressor in and bypass that annoyance.
I'm also kinda crossing bridges when I come to them, so I'll worry about next steps after all my parts are acquired and installed. That's been the initial plan at least, yet here we are wondering if perhaps I need to rethink my strategy.
And lest anyone wonder, I'm completely confident in my ability to learn new stuff and ready to try and fail til I get it right-- so if it CAN be done without pricey equipment and tools, I plan on figuring it out, so please don't discourage my dreams unless it's truly necessary~

2023.06.09 00:33 ceeeeezzzz 2003 Dakota V6 possible idler pulley failing?

2003 Dakota V6 possible idler pulley failing?
I was driving yesterday and noticed when I was stopped or my truck was idling (only in Drive and Reverse) there was an annoying rattling sound. Initially I was worried it was my transmission. So today when I got in from work I checked the trans fluid and it’s all good and all is well(no slipping or any other symptoms).
So I got my partner to come out and put it in drive for me while I recorded a video. When she put it in drive I immediately noticed my belt shaking and the rattle was so loud on the passenger side.
I suspect it being my idler pulley cause that’s where the sound was the loudest. Either that or the alternator but it was replaced not long ago by the previous owner.
Before I go buy a new idler pulley I’d like to hear other opinions and I’d love to hear if anyone had a similar experience ANDDDD if anyone has any tips or tricks in changing the idler pulley. I will also change the belt seeing as I’ll have it off, lol.
Check out the video and idk how much Reddit will kill the quality but if you look close at the idler you can see it bouncing very fast side to side and you can see the belt under the pulley shaking a bit.
Funny enough, it only happens when in any drive gear and not in park or neutral. It stops after about 15km.
TIA you guys have been a ton of help with building my knowledge on dakotas!

2023.06.09 00:32 Cheap-Recognition-97 4x4 2000 dodge Dakota quad cab vs 2008 2wd 4Runner vs a newish truck

Hey I need advice.
So I have a somewhat white collar job at the moment and do side jobs on weekends, I’m considering selling one of my vehicles since I got my SO a new SUV.
My truck is falling apart and needs a lot of work ( new suspension, New clutch and flywheel, new AC, heater core) but I still like it. I really enjoy manual transmission especially with a big V8.
My 4Runner performs fine and has about the same mileage as my truck 140k. Only issue I may have is my cat possibly getting clogged I assume because the exhaust stinks.
So I’m thinking my options are:
Sell my truck and buy a small trailer for my 4runner
Sell the 4runner and put the money into my truck
Sell them both and get a new to me diesel and delete it :)
Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks

2023.06.08 22:29 Switch011693 2014 Fudge Grand Caravan Trans Question

I have a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6. Intermittently it seems as though it's having trouble shifting in between 35 and 40 miles an hour. Most of the time it seems to happen at stop and go traffic or if I have to coast down and then re-accelerate. The van has 147,000 miles on it and the transmission was replaced at 97,000 miles, so there's roughly 50,000 miles on the trans itself. There are no codes or lights on the vehicle. Several people have told me to get a trans filter change because the fluid is a little gritty, but one guy at the dealership said that it could actually cause more damage to do that. Has anyone had this issue before? I appreciate any help or advice.
