2023.06.10 12:29 MediaVsReality The King and The Hero - A Short Story About How The Media REALLY Works
PART 1 - The King's Problem
The King did not know empathy.
If he saw somebody in pain, he felt nothing. If he watched a child cry, he felt nothing. And if he saw an injured bird on the road, he would press the sole of his boot on top of it without a second thought.
This was just as he governs.
The people lacked food, yet the King felt nothing. And did nothing. For in his palace, he had all the food he would ever need.
The people lacked medicine, yet the King felt nothing. And did nothing. For in his palace, he had all the medicine he would ever need.
The people lacked education, yet the King felt nothing. And did nothing. For in his palace, he had all the books and scholars he would ever need.
In his palace built entirely of solid gold, he was the most powerful King in all the land.
But the King had a problem. One thorn in his side. One little nuisance that kept him awake at night.
From nowhere, a man had appeared. His name: Rohe
Rohe spoke atop a platform in the streets to the people. He spoke of the unjust nature of The King's rule, of the palace made of solid gold and the endless luxuries stored within it.
Rohe blamed the King for the hunger the people had suffered. And he blamed the King for the deaths of brothers, sisters, children, mothers and fathers due to the lack of medicine.
And finally, Rohe told the people to rise up against the King, storm the palace of solid gold and take back control of their food, their medicine and their land.
Worst of all, to the King's terror, the people had begun to support Rohe. In the streets, Rohe would draw thousands of supporters. "Freedom for the people" they would chant in unison.
The King was utterly furious. How dare these low-born peasants chant such things. How dare these stupid, ignorant and inferior men even consider stealing his rightfully owned riches.
Something had to be done.
Not knowing what to do, he spoke to his 3 most trusted advisors.
The first advisor suggested he have Rohe killed.
The second advisor suggested he have Rohe thrown in jail.
The third advisor, the most cunning and mischievous of the 3, disapproved of the plans of the first 2 advisors. Killing him or throwing him in jail, he explained, would encourage the crowds still further.
Instead, he suggested something different entirely. He suggested they turn the people against Rohe.
"How?" asked the King curiously. "How can we turn the people against him"?
The third advisor adjusted the large, rounded glasses that lay on top his big, crooked nose and grew a mischievous smile. "The newspapers, of course."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PART 2 - The Third Advisor
The lands had hundreds of different newspapers, but only 3 main ones, which were by far the most widely read.
The people believed these newspapers to be run by well-meaning people who aimed to tell them honestly of the goings-on throughout the world.
The truth was different.
While it was made to appear that these newspaper were run independently, they were in fact controlled by the King himself. Whenever the King needed, he control everything that was written inside one of the 3 main newspapers.
The Kong granted the cunning third advisor the task of turning the people against Rohe. And so, the third advisor began his research:
To his dismay, Rohe was close to perfect. A true hero.
- He had a loving wife and two young children
- He had grown up poor and had managed to create a little bit of wealth through hard work on his farm.
- He was strong, with big, bulging muscles and had a handsome face.
- On his farm worked 10 white men and 2 black men, all of whom he treated with great kindness and respect.
- He was rarely at home with his family. He was always working, helping at the local school or in the streets doing his speeches.
Upon finishing his research, a crooked smile crept upon the face of the third advisor. He adjusted his spectacles and muttered to himself.
"This is all I need..."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PART 3 - The Article
Rohe — The People's Hero Or Attention Seeking Conspiracy Theorist?
Rising from an obscure background, Rohe the so-called "Hero" has ballooned in popularity in recent months. Everywhere he goes, commotion follows; drawing crowds of thousands of worshipping fans who hang on every word he says.
He has been reported bellowing his ideology in Lockwood, Brimshore, Farmsdale and even as far as Watershire. It seems as though Rohe is a mastermind at drawing the attention of others. Where does this attention go? Well, to himself of course. With his handsome dark hair and muscular physique, public image is seemingly the fuel that Mr Rohe feeds on. '
"He's come from God! He's like God himself!" exclaimed one of his fanatic supporters as we interviewed them.
Mr Rohe's main message seems to be against the King himself; spouting obscure claims such as "The King is keeping all the food for himself while the people starve!", he cried into a crowd in Lockwood last week. Of course, this isn't a new line of thought, with other such violent figures as "John the Terrorist" and the now proven liar and fraud Christopher Whittle.
Experts tend to agree that the food hardship some are currently facing is due to a series of unfortunately poor harvests as well as changing whether conditions. We asked the lead food resource advisor in the kingdom for his opinion on the matter. "We've heard this all before" he said while holding back a laugh, "Mr Rohe is just parroting the same old conspiracy theories we hear every year".
While Mr Rohe screams non-stop of the riches of others, his own wealth has been quietly building. Donations from his fanatic supporters have allowed him to purchase a second piece of farmland on top his already wealthy estate. Unsurprisingly, his workforce consists of almost entirely white men with a mere handful of coloured workers throughout his farms.
We travelled to Mr Rohe's farm and spoke with his wife, who told us "We as almost never see him! He's constantly on the road. He pops by to see the kids and check on the farm every week or so". It seems as though it's difficult to pay close attention to your family when you're so busy drawing attention to yourself in the streets.
Mr Rohe's fans seem to admire him deeply, but such adoration can turn nasty. His most extreme supporters have abused, harassed and on one occasion physically assaulted Mr Rohe's critics. "His fans are relentless", says well-known critic Johnathon Adams. "The harass me day and night and have even threatened to attack me.
While Mr Rohe does not endorse such violent behaviour, he does not exactly deter it either. He describes the King as "evil" and "corrupt" and once stated that "sometimes the power of the fist is necessary".
Mr Rohe's rhetoric seems to attract all kinds of unsavory characters; the aforementioned "Jack the Terrorist" as well as well-known woman beater Joseph Smith have both stated their support for Mr Rohe.
In the end, the key to Mr Rohe's appeal is also his greatest weakness. He wants to be the man who knows everything and can explain everything. But his arguments are riddled with conspiracy theories and crude distortions of the truth.
Even so, his critics will have a tough time. Mr Rohe's wave of popularity is unlikely to come crashing down any time soon.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PART 4
A year had passed, and over the months the third advisor wrote countless similar articles and published them in the 3 main newspapers.
To his and the King's delight, their plan had worked flawlessly.
Support for Mr Rohe began to wane. Many began to accuse Mr Rohe as being a racist. Others claimed he was mistreating his wife. Most began to be see Mr Rohe as somebody not to be taken seriously.
The people started feeling a sense of distrust and dislike towards Mr Rohe deep in their stomachs. They didn't know exactly why they felt this way, but felt it they did.
Something had switched inside their minds. They began to see everything Mr Rohe did through a negative lens. His previously heroic speeches now seemed shrill and childish. His impressive physique and sharp jaw now seemed vain and self-centred. And his claims about The King and what was really inside his palace made of solid gold now had doubt cast upon them. Some still believed Mr Rohe, some thought him to be exaggerating, most simply threw their hands up in confusion and forgot all about it.
When Mr Rohe made a speech on the streets, many rolled their eyes at his crazy supporters. And with growing frequency, an opposing group of protesters would appear and shout over him. They made claims that Mr Rohe was a racist, and they made jokes about the 2 farms Mr Rohe owned.
The King's problem had been solved.
The third advisor became one of the King's closest confidantes and was allowed access to many of the luxuries inside the palace: food, women and anything else he could possibly dream of.
As for the people, their lives steadily got worse and worse. Their food supplies dwindled, medicine became rare to find and the people became sadder, more depressed and more desperate. Despite this, most accepted their situation as "the way life is", while others blamed God for their misfortune.
One day, another man began to make speeches on the streets against the King. His name: Varios. The People began to call him their "Savior".
The King passed his pen over to the third advisor. "Ready?"
The third advisor grew a wicked grin.
"Of course"

2023.06.10 12:28 TinyFlan4013 "Sustainable clothing brand Patagonia manufactures in the same factories as fast-fashion; textile workers are being exploited"
The Dutch independent investigative journalism platform 'Follow the Money' wrote a article about Patagonia.
"Sustainable clothing brand Patagonia manufactures in the same factories as fast-fashion; textile workers are being exploited" Clothing brand Patagonia seems to be doing everything right: for its employees, for the people who make the clothes and for the environment. The company’s image – they say they’re in business to save our home planet – is very different from fast-fashion brands like asos, Primark and Nike. But Patagonia’s clothes are manufactured in exactly the same factories and under the same deplorable conditions. When Yvon Chouinard started creating climbing equipment in his parents’ backyard in Burbank, California, he used steel. Soon he earned a reputation for making the ‘best’ climbing equipment in America. But every time a climber slammed one of those steel pegs into a rock, the gap got a little bigger and eventually unusable. Chouinard realised he was making money by destroying the rocks and therefore also the sport. And so he switched to aluminium blocks, which did not damagethe rocks.
The change was expensive and risky for the young company, but the moral dilemma was reason enough for Chouinard to implement the change. And to be very outspoken about it. It was a success: within a year, 40 per cent of the US climbing community stopped using steel.
Chouinard applied this experience when he started the outdoor brand Patagonia in 1973. He wanted to make only high-quality clothing that would last. And limit the impact on the environment as much as possible. In 1996, the brand switched to 100 per cent organic cotton, only to increasingly replace it with recycled materials. But the responsibility that Chouinard attributed to the company extended further.
In 2002 he decided to give one per cent of sales to environmental organisations every year. In 2011, Patagonia placed a full-page ad in the New York Times calling on consumers to ‘not buy this jacket’ in order to draw attention to the problematic nature of overconsumption in the clothing industry.
In addition, the clothing had to be manufactured fairly: in 2012, the top of the company made paying living wages to everyone who makes Patagonia products a ‘priority’. In 2020, Patagonia launched a campaign encouraging consumers to demand more from clothing brands: ‘
Demand recycled. Demand organic. Demand Fair Trade,’ Patagonia urged its viewers.
In 2022, the then 84-year-old Chouinard caused worldwide astonishment, when he gave away 98 per cent of his shares to a newly formed NGO, the Holdfast Collective, which is ‘committed in its fight against the environmental crisis and protecting nature.’ Henceforth, the company’s profits would no longer flow to himself or his children but to the climate. ‘Earth is now our only shareholder,’ Chouinard said.
Billionaire gives company away to climate, newspapers like
The New York Times, The Washington Post and
The Guardian reported*.*
This construction saved the NGO an estimated 700 million dollars that Chouinard would have had to pay in tax if he had sold the company and donated the proceeds to the same NGO. But according to Chouinard, this option allowed him to do something else: protect Patagonia’s values. Because he did not give the voting shares to Holdfast Collective but to a family trust. This allows his family to continue determining the company’s direction.
The company’s turnover – its European headquarters are in Amsterdam − grew by more than 50 per cent that year to about 1.5 billion dollars.
The actions earned Patagonia an image as being the ultimate sustainable frontrunner. In April,
Time Magazine named Chouinard one of the world’s 100 most influential people. ‘Patagonia is a company people look up to in awe,’ the magazine wrote.
The complete opposite of Patagonia is a company like Primark. The Irish retail chain is known for selling on-trend low-quality clothes at low prices. Its revenue model is based on mass: high volumes with low margins.
Primark continuously creates new garment collections designed to be worn only a few times, after which they fall apart. The company uses advertising, clearance sales and influencers to urge consumers to keep buying as much as possible.
Media regularly report on the subsequent consequences. One, in particular, is that the people who make the clothes suffer from high production pressure at low cost. ‘Primark supplier accused of locking up factory workers in Myanmar protests,’
The Guardian headline read in 2021. That same year, The Clean Clothes Campaign NGO
wrote: ‘Primark uses pandemic to put further pressure on factory workers in manufacturing countries.’
Patagonia and Primark seem like two extremes on the slow versus fast-fashion spectrum. Yet the brands have something in common. Some of their clothing is manufactured in the exact same factory.
PATAGONIA IN AMSTERDAM In 2014, Patagonia moved its European headquarters from Annecy town in the French Alps to Amsterdam. Reflecting on this, current CEO Ryan Gellert told the city marketing website I Amsterdam: ‘We established headquarters here in 2014 because we wanted a place where we could attract and retain pan-European and global talent, [...] and where there was an active community working on sustainability issues. As we searched potential locations across Europe, Amsterdam remained high on our list.’
According to Tax Law Professor Jan van de Streek, tax benefits may also have played a role in the choice of the Netherlands. This is because Patagonia did not register in the Netherlands as a BV but as a cooperative with two US members: Patagonia International Inc and Patagonia Global LLC. ‘Why choose something as strange as a cooperative structure?’ Van de Streek remarks to Follow the Money. ‘Because it is exempt from dividend tax. I think it’s naive to think there’s any other reason for that.’
Responding to questions about this, Patagonia said: ‘Since its inception, Patagonia Europe Coöperatief has paid regular corporate income taxes in all European countries where we do business, including the Netherlands, and has never used the tax efficiencies of a cooperative.’
‘At the suggestion of our advisors', Patagonia chose a cooperative structure ‘because it's the most flexible type of entity that suited our business purpose. However, Patagonia has chosen not to pursue any of the tax advantages available under the cooperative entity type. Patagonia Europe has not paid dividends to its parent company.'
‘No difference’
That factory is called Regal Image and is located in Sri Lanka. To be precise, in the Free Trade Zone of Katunayake, less than two kilometres from the international airport. The industrial estate is guarded 24/7 by Sri Lankan police. Access is only possible with a special pass.
In the factory hall, there are long tables with pieces of white fabric on them. An employee walks past with sea-green paint and a stencil forming the letters ‘asics’. Further along, a machine prints a grey logo on a purple tank top for Decathlon.
‘So far, we don’t really notice any difference between working with Patagonia and working with Primark or Decathlon,’ says Kevin Fernando. Fernando is the manager at the factory, which dyes, prints or embroiders logos and prints on fabrics. Regal Image was recently approved as a supplier to Patagonia, a process that took nine months. Fernando shows the designs for the 2024 summer collection. Light blue fabric features ‘Patagonia’ in pink letters, and a rainbow is printed on orange fabric.
‘Like most clothing companies, we do not make our products, nor do we own any of the factories that do,’ Patagonia writes on its website about the decision to outsource the manufacturing process. ‘We design, test, market and sell Patagonia gear. These are our areas of strength. We pay other companies [...] to produce fabrics and do the actual cutting and sewing.’
‘No control over working conditions’
Patagonia promises to only partner with factories that are ‘like-minded’ and who share their ‘philosophy.’ Patagonia has found
sixty-one suitable factories: two in the US, one in Portugal and the remainder in 12 different low-wage countries. The bulk of the products are made in Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
At least two-thirds of the factories that manufacture Patagonia clothing also work for clothing brands that, according to the consumer website Good on You, have little or no sustainability policies in place (Patagonia itself is touted by Good on You as sustainable). This is evident from an analysis by Follow the Money based on data from Open Supply Hub, which aims to make supply chains in the clothing industry more transparent.
One day people make clothing for Patagonia, and the next day, they make items for brands such as GAP, Levi Strauss, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Amer Sports, Asics, US department store chain Target, e-commerce platform Amazon, supermarket Aldi and fast-fashion icons ASOS, Boohoo, H&M and Zara.
‘How is this possible?’ visual culture professor Anneke Smelik responds. Smelik researches sustainable fashion at Radboud University. ‘I know Patagonia as the most sustainable brand out there. I expected them to manufacture in small factories close to home. This means they have absolutely no control over working conditions.’
PATAGONIA IN SRI LANKA Patagonia works with 14 factories in Sri Lanka that are part of (or partner with) two companies: MAS Holdings and the Hirdaramani Group.
MAS Holdings was founded in 1987 by three brothers: Mahesh, Ajay and Sharad Amalean. The company began manufacturing lingerie and later expanded to sportswear, swimwear and T-shirts. With factories in 17 countries and roughly 2.4 billion dollars in turnover by 2022, MAS is Sri Lanka’s largest clothing manufacturer. The Amalean brothers are among the wealthiest men in the country.
The company emphatically presents itself as a sustainable clothing manufacturer. For instance, the company promises to emit 25 per cent less CO2 by 2025 than in 2019, and CEO Suren Fernando expects the group to earn half its revenue from sustainable products by then.
In May 2023, MAS received a
Presidential Environment Award from President Ranil Wickremesinghe for the company’s commitment to the environment. The company describes the welfare of its employees as ‘its top priority’. On the subject of paying a living wage, the company makes no promises.
In the early 1900s, Parmanand Hirdaramani, then 16 years old, started a clothing shop in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo. Today, his great-grandson Aroon Hirdaramani runs the Hirdaramani Group, which has grown into an international clothing conglomerate with factories in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Vietnam and a turnover of around 900 million US dollars.
Hirdaramani also presents itself as a sustainable producer. The company’s website states: ‘At Hirdaramani, we do the right thing. We have always done that. It’s about making good decisions today that benefit everyone in the long run.’
Since 2019, all Hirdaramani factories in Sri Lanka have been producing climate neutrally. For 2025, the company has set several targets on material use, water use, waste and leadership. Paying a living or higher wage is not a target.
In 2016, Aroon Hirdaramani and his wife Mona surfaced in the Pandora Papers. It emerged that Hirdaramani owned two investment companies in the British Virgin Islands. The reason for this is unclear. The fact is that companies based there do not have to pay tax on income, profits, dividends and interest, among other things.
Sixteen-hour workdays
Eligibility to manufacture Patagonia products requires a supplier to meet a list of sustainability criteria. Those criteria are set out in a
code of conduct for suppliers. For example, child labour, forced labour, or physical, sexual or verbal harassment are not allowed. All national laws must be respected. Suppliers must respect workers’ right to freedom of association, may not force workers to work overtime and must ensure healthy working conditions. Working weeks of more than 60 hours or more than six days in a row is not acceptable to Patagonia.
Patagonia checks whether a factory complies with these standards through independent auditor visits at least once a year, says the brand after being questioned by Follow the Money. Checks are also carried out by the Fair Labor Association (FLA) and FairTrade: two NGOs that provide Patagonia’s manufacturing process and clothing with a sustainability label.
A part of those audits is public. Since 2016, the FLA has
publishedassessments of seven Patagonia factories, including three in Vietnam, three in Sri Lanka and one in China. During those inspections, auditors found dozens of violations, varying greatly in severity.
For instance, almost 2000 employees at a factory in Vietnam were paid less for their overtime than what they should have received and employees’ ages were not recorded (thus child labour cannot be ruled out). Another check found out that applicants had to provide their menstrual date. Employees told the interviewers they were not allowed to become pregnant in the first six months of their employment. Less serious violations dealt with issues such as working without protective equipment, blocked emergency exits, or a lack of policies on harassment or discrimination.
One problem crops up in every report. Textile workers in factories manufacturing clothes for Patagonia work far longer hours than legally permitted: up to 17 hours a day and more than 80 hours a week, well beyond what is permissible according to Patagonia’s code of conduct.
‘Long working hours with insufficient breaks often lead to health problems,’ the Clean Clothes Campaign recently
wrote about this issue. ‘Managers pressure employees to work 10- to 12-hour and sometimes even 16- to 18-hour days. The number of hours increases as the deadline approaches. Those who protest are simply fired. Moreover, workers depend on overtime to supplement their low wages.’
At the Regal Image factory in Sri Lanka, manager Fernando assures that his employees work a maximum of five days a week and 10 hours a day. But during the tour, a line manager starts talking about the duration of his shift: from eight in the morning to a quarter to 10 in the evening – almost 14 hours. ‘It’s busy,’ says Fernando, casually.
‘This is what the fast-fashion model does,’ says Smelik. ‘Brands want their products to be in store within a few weeks. So when a factory receives an order from such a brand, the production targets and overtime skyrocket.’
‘They talk to us like we are animals’
The office of Stand Up Lanka, a union led by Ashila Niroshine Dandeniya, is located just outside the Free-Trade Zone. She started working in a MAS factory, part of MAS Holdings that is a supplier to Patagonia, in 2003. Her colleagues elected her to represent them as a member of the factory’s employees council. But when she addressed the matter of wages, she was fired. She challenged her dismissal, got compensation, and discovered that there were laws in place to protect people like her.
Now, almost 20 years later, she knows Sri Lankan labour law like the back of her hand. Her office is a hexagon with five windows, all open. Textile workers from nearby factories approach her via these windows to greet her or ask for help.
When a transman walks past, she says, ‘He applied to MAS Shadowline [one of Patagonia’s suppliers, ed] a month ago. They said they didn’t want him because he is transgender. He can’t get work anywhere. And he cannot go back to his village because he is Muslim. His family will shoot him.’
When about six women wearing yellow MAS polos come and ask for a food parcel, Dandeniya shakes her head. ‘We don’t have enough. Since the country’s economic crisis, some families barely eat two meals a day. How am I supposed to choose who can eat and who can’t?’
That evening, she introduces Priya (31). Priya has been working for MAS Shadowline for almost two years, sewing the side seams on leggings or T-shirts. She makes many clothes for yoga brand Lululemon and for Lacoste (famous through the crocodile logo), but sometimes also for Patagonia.
‘The worst part is the scolding,’ she says in her home a few streets away: a room of about 12 square metres. It contains a double bed, a small kitchenette and a wardrobe. Despite the fan on the wall, it is sweltering hot inside. She shares a toilet and a shower with others.
‘My supervisor’s manager is a terrible man. He touches everyone in a bad way, and if you say you don’t want that, you have a problem. He yells at me if I have to go to the bank or the doctor. “Then who will do the work? Who will meet the target?” And he’s not the only one. They talk to us like we are animals.’
When asked about her production targets, she breathes a deep sigh. ‘The other day, Lululemon placed a huge order, and now everyone is stressed. On the first day, we had to make seventy items per hour, but on the second day, it was suddenly a hundred. Otherwise, we won’t make the delivery date.’ During the working day, she does not drink water so that she does not waste time going to the toilet. Despite this, she seldom meets the target. And that means: no bonus.
Without that bonus, Priya earns 32,000 rupees a month (97 euros). Her room costs 7,000 rupees (21 euros), and a meal 300 rupees (1 euro). She has no money left for other things.
‘Since the crisis, we are increasingly hearing stories from our members of textile workers using drugs,’ says Dandeniya. ‘Also in MAS factories that Patagonia works with. They use it to work faster. Sometimes also against the hunger.’
Chamila Thushari, union leader of Dabindu Collective, confirms the story. ‘They use Ice (Crystal Meth) or Babul.’ She points to her collar and to the sole of her shoe. ‘This is how they smuggle it in. The management knows this happens but allows it. All they care about is production targets are being met.’
An employee of a third union, GTZ-GSEU, confirms that drug use among textile workers in the Free Trade Zone is a problem.
Patagonia says these claims are ‘new’ to them and ‘serious’, but says, without evidence, it cannot comment.
A living wage
That Patagonia, known for being sustainable, has its clothes manufactured in the same factories as other much less sustainable brands is seen as an advantage by the company. ‘Patagonia has a powerful brand voice, but we are a quite small player in the apparel sector. Therefore, we are always looking for ways to scale our impact and to elevate the industry standards across the board, bringing other apparel retailers along on the journey with us. So, continuing to engage in shared production facilities is crucial to this work.’
Patagonia wants all people who make clothes to earn a decent wage. In 2015, the company promised that within 10 years, all employees in its supply chain would be earning a living wage that would be enough to live on. That is, enough for food, water, housing, education, healthcare, transport and other essential needs.
With 18 months to go, only 40 per cent of its factories pay a living wage,
according to Patagonia. They would not reveal the factories concerned. Suppliers reportedly ‘have the right to maintain their factories’ wage data confidential’.

To determine a living wage, Patagonia uses the Anker Research Institute’s calculation method. According to that method, you can live decently in urban Sri Lanka if you earn a minimum of 83,231 Sri Lankan rupees (263 euro) a month. Priya’s salary does not even cover half that. And at the recently approved Regal Image print factory, the basic wage is even lower: 21,000 rupees (66 euro), says Fernando.
Thulsi Narayanasamy is frustrated by Patagonia’s approach to sustainability. She is director of advocacy at the Worker Rights Consortium, an independent non-profit organization that monitors and investigates labor conditions in the global apparel and textile industry. ‘Patagonia spends millions on green initiatives. Why can’t they pay the people who make their clothes properly?’
Patagonia says it ‘has no authority over how much textile workers get paid, as they are in no way, shape or form the employer of these workers.’ Narayanasamy, however, is convinced Patagonia can pay a living wage, if the brand would want to. ‘They could bring production in-house or pay more to suppliers that’s ringfenced for wages high enough to achieve a living income. It’s so well established that brand’s pricing practices directly impact wage levels, it’s a fallacy to deny this.’
‘I think we should ask ourselves: why don't clothing brands have their own factories?’ She asks the question, then answers it. 'Brands don't want to be responsible for the people who produce their clothes. All brands benefit from that, including Patagonia.
RESPONSE FROM PATAGONIA When asked why it does not pay its suppliers more for decent wages for workers, Patagonia replied: ‘Relying on one brand to simply cover the gap is a band-aid solution and does not serve the factory in the long run. If the one brand that pays the gap were to leave the factory, then those wages for workers would go away, leaving the factory with a shortfall they would not be able to cover. Additionally, if the brand just writes a check to the factory, then there is no guarantee that the money would go towards workers’ wages. The brand has no authority over how much workers get paid as they are in no way, shape or form the employer of those workers.’
About the long working hours, Patagonia says: ‘Excessive overtime is pervasive globally, which is why it is audited regularly. If we find a problem that can be resolved, we work with our factory partners to implement sustainable solutions. This can take many years, but we find this is the best outcome for the workers and the factory.’
In response to the allegations about drug use among textile workers, Patagonia says: ‘These are serious and new allegations, however without evidence, we are not able to comment on them. We are continuing to conduct our ongoing monitoring program and we remain committed to addressing systemic issues to ensure workers’ wellbeing across our supply chain.’

2023.06.10 12:27 Curious-Month7727 22 [M4F] UK - Just a Guy Searching For His Version of Happiness: a Long Term Relationship 🫵🏻
Intro
Hello all 👋🏻 My name is Damien and I'm very excited but also a tad bit nervous to be doing this again. I've decided to write a shorter post as my last one flopped and didn't get any attention so here I am starting afresh and seeing what happens. I am doing this because I have very little experience in relationships (as my last one was 4¼ years ago which ended terribly, been looking to date again ever since) and decided that I want to put myself out there in the hopes of finding that special someone whom I can start something special with. However, getting to know each other and seeing where things lead first is a must, ofc.
Physical Appearance
My appearance is quite normal:
•I'm 5'8 in height (1.73 m)
•Eye colour is dark blue 💙
•I've got quite the decent body shape
•I have no tattoos but I'm considering getting a few in the future
•I've got a small amount of facial hair
•I've got quite a lot of dark brown hair on the top of my head but keep it in control most times with hairspray
•I've got an average to slightly above average face imo (pics can be exchanged if you're interested in knowing what I look like)
•I'm healthy with no health conditions or concerns
•I wear normal clothes such as buttoned t-shirts, hoodies, jeans / tracksuit bottoms and denim jackets / leather jackets.
•I also have a balanced diet as I go grocery shopping at least once a week.
Hobbies
I'm an indoor type of person. I like:
•Watching TV shows like Doctor Who when new episodes come out, The Simpsons and Hollyoaks 5 days a week, and binging on a ton of movies.
•Listening to music pretty much every single day as I'm a huge HUGE fan of it.
•Gaming on PC games such as GTA, Red Dead, and Minecraft.
•I may stay indoors most of the time, but I DO also enjoy doing outdoor activities like spending my days out in places in the UK like Scarborough, Blackpool, Hornsea and Withernsea. I'm going to a place named Filey late next month so hopefully I'll get to take a load of pics to show you if you're interested :)
•I'm also interested in Photography, taking stunning photos both indoors and outdoors to store and save for later. Wildlife, sea life and everything else in between is what I'm most interested in :)
•Playing different sports such as Badminton, Bowling, Cricket, Dodgeball, Kite flying, Tennis and Volleyball on the beach are activities I really enjoy doing, but I haven't played them recently thanks to a lack of others playing them with me.
•Gardening and working with plants is something that really fascinates me, planting and watching plants of all shapes and sizes grow is everything I've wanted to do since my late high school days. Also getting a bit of sunshine on my neck in the summer does me some good lol.
•I like doing artistic activities like card making, paper crafting, drawing and painting, but only on special occasions.
•I also like to read from time to time.
•One more thing I should mention is I absolutely adore cats / kitten 😻 Yep I'm a hard core cat lover. Although I don't have any right now, I'm thinking of adopting in the future.
Personality (brief, more in the "potential deal breakers category)
Other things you should know about me is that I'm extremely loyal and will never hurt the people I love and hold dear, no matter what. I care too much about the people in my life, including family, and I also will never let them down or disappoint them in any way.
Important Topic to Cover
I'm not gonna mention what my source of income is because I don't want people to message me just because of that, like so many people have done before.
Preferences In You
I don't have many tbh. Just as long as you
•Live in the UK, or at least in different countries that are close to the UK like Norway, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, France, or perhaps even The Netherlands, since all have shorter time-zone differences to the ones in the UK which will make it so much easier to chat at similar times (but you can message me wherever you are on the globe)
•Don't smoke or do drugs
•My age range is between 18-23, but people that are past that can also message me. Not too fussed tbh
•I'm not religious, by any means, but I don't mind dating people who are.
•Come as you are, no sugar coating, be real, be genuine. 🚫No NSFW content please🚫, that's all I ask.
Things I'm Good At In a Realationship and Overall
•Loyal, I will stick by you till the end •Good cook •Clean and tidy •Good listener •Honest, Respectful & Trustworthy •Understanding •Passionate •Communicating •Supportive
Potential Deal Breakers
•I'm a hard core introvert and find it difficult meeting and getting to know new people. However if people are willing to get to know me and are genuine about it, then I will become much more confident and comfortable meeting and getting to know them as well.
•I don't have any children, and I don't ever want them as I would likely be a very inexperienced and lousy father. The reason I have this mind set is because I never had a father growing up since I was 2 to present, and also because the kid would undoubtedly think of me as a very boring and rubbish dad as they grow up because of that. Idk, I just don't think kids are for me 🤷🏻♂️
•Very clingy, not in an annoying way, more as a saying that I appreciate you for giving me the time of day, for example: texting you very frequently if given the chance
Outro
If you've read this far, then I appreciate you for taking the time out of your schedule to read my post. I did have a lot more I wanted to mention, but I feel like that would've been too much for most people to read on here and I want to mention all that stuff whilst I'm talking to you as that would be much more interesting :)
See you on the other side? 🙏🏻

2023.06.10 12:27 ParaMoon42 Birdie Flew The Coop Yesterday (just a LONG rant)
Hi there! It's me, Dani. :-)
It's been forever since I last posted here about my 57-year-old brother named Rob with a brain tumor and the impossible burden of my sister and me getting dumped into the role of caretaking for him by his soon-to-be ex-wife (They're still legally married... just pointing out that fact bitterly. =p)
Okay, let me start by explaining the situation concerning myself and my sister, Ace. We're in our forties now with our own hereditary illnesses. Sure, it's not as serious as a brain tumor, but it's nothing to sneeze at. To respect my sister's privacy, I will not go into the finer details of her health issues, but I will simply state that she is immunocompromised and recently had a bone marrow procedure done this month (She assured me that it was okay for me to share that much with this lovely Reddit community, don't worry!).
As for myself, I'm a little more open about my various health issues to strangers - not everything, but I can share with you that I'm neurodivergent, suffer from anxiety, PTSD, depression, and agoraphobia, and my physical ailments are with both knees (requiring physical therapy) and ongoing eye disease (Keratoconus) that means that I'm currently reading posts/replying/and writing this ranting post by a talking screen-reader that I've set on British voice. Hello, world. ;-)
To say the least, perhaps my sister and I need caretakers, instead of being so. Regardless, we both work hard to keep our independence (ie: taking our medication, keeping up with medical appointments, going to therapy, keeping up with our bills, our hygiene, etc.) and to help out one another with the things each of us may excel in.
For example, I can't always handle phone calls or leave the house on my own, so my sister will make important phone calls for me, go with me to appointments, and pick up my medication from the local pharmacy. And I'm tall enough to reach things that my sister can't around the house, to encourage her confidence when she needs it, and carry heavy things when she can't. Ace and I are best friends and we work as a team together.
So, to recap - The first plan was for Rob to travel from Maryland to Minnesota, to visit us at our apartment for his birthday, before he was to go in for his brain surgery in Philadelphia. He was a little worse off, frail and needing assistance to walk up the stairs to our second-floor apartment, and was nursing a few wounds on his leg (that wasn't healing because the brain tumor gave him diabetes). He visited a few hospitals on his visit with us, due to the pain he was feeling in his legs, but besides that, he was mobile and had a good time with us on his birthday. Ace traveled with him back home to Maryland and we had planned for him to visit us again in the future, after his surgery in Philly.
The day before that surgery, he decided that it would be better to travel back to Minnesota and seek out his surgery here. His wife tried to talk him out of that, Ace tried to talk him out of it, and so did I to no avail. So, I said "Okay, but it will take longer for you to get another surgery set up in Minnesota." and he insisted on flying to Minnesota on his own, right away. And then... his wife was suddenly eager to send him off as well.
In hindsight, it all makes a lot of sense WHY she was so eager to dump her very sick husband off on us. Underneath "Tumor Rob" is "Man-child Rob", unfortunately. If Ace and I had known that we'd be saddled with a man who apparently took on every toxic trait of our mother, we would have said "no" to this change of plans!
Rob nearly died waiting for his brain surgery at UofM, here in Minnesota. Thankfully, the surgery was a success and he survived, but it didn't magically give him back his physical mobility or make him a reasonable person. It turned out that what Ace and I thought of our brother as a person, was shrouded in childhood nostalgia. We had been apart for decades and hadn't known each other long as adults now. The last time he saw Ace and I, we were in our early twenties, in Philly. He was catching up to how much Ace and I had grown as people in our forties now.
And his soon-to-be ex-wife explained to us, finally, that his man-child-ness is why she wanted to divorce him long before Rob had ever got sick with a tumor. She felt "stuck" in taking care of him, after he got sick with a brain tumor, and she saw my sister and me as a great opportunity to get rid of her problem.
Even though I understand her desperation, I don't believe that was a fair thing for her to do to me and my sister at all. I feel a lot bitter and angry with her now. She didn't warn us how much his health had degraded since the last time we visited with him, or how awful he can be - emotionally manipulative, selfish, entitled, and spiteful. She's happy to confess it NOW, but didn't say a word of it before she put him on a plane and abandoned him with us.
I feel hurt that she didn't even consider if Ace and I could take care of Rob at all. She just assumed that we could and gave us no warning! Neither of us was prepared and this whole thing upended our lives - it nearly came in between the friendship of my sister and me. It nearly drove my sister to suicide at some point (don't worry, she's in therapy now!) and I nearly lost myself in this whole thing as well. Why couldn't she just dump him in a nursing home, as NORMAL PEOPLE do?!
Anyway, Rob has been insisting for the past two months that we take him out of hospital care and "back home" to our apartment - demanding that my sister and I give up our lives to be 24-7 caretakers to him instead. For my sister to give up her job (and she's the main breadwinner here!), our friends, our appointments, and our health, in order to wait on him hand and foot.
The doctors insist that he CAN gain physical mobility back, that all he has to do is physical therapy in order for him to walk again and not need to wear adult diapers anymore. So, at this point in time, Rob's inability to walk is completely voluntary on his part. He keeps refusing physical therapy and getting into arguments with the physical therapists on multiple occasions.
Ace and I had learned that this surgery was his FOURTH brain surgery - as neither he nor his wife told us this beforehand. We were under the impression that this was Rob's second brain surgery to remove the tumor, but the doctors at UofM informed us of the truth... because that means that the brain tumor keeps growing back and Rob needs radiation or chemo treatments to keep it from doing that. Otherwise, Rob is going to need a new brain surgery in his sixties next time around, and he may not survive it. This is when Rob confessed that he opted out of radiation/chemo care the other THREE times before this last tumor.
So, the new plan was for Rob to undergo radiation treatments and physical therapy. Once he regains his physical mobility again - able to use the toilet on his own/no diapers, able to walk on his own and up the stairs to our apartment, able to dress and shower himself again (as he did on his birthday visit), walk to the kitchen and fix meals for himself, and so on, he could live with my sister and me in Minnesota, for as long as he needed to. He can't go back to Maryland to his wife (as he decided to not pay the rent, thus losing the family home, and his ex is living back with her parents now with the kids) and she doesn't want to live with him anymore. And other relatives are not interested in taking him in at all.
Rob decided that he doesn't want to do physical therapy at all or radiation. He insists that Ace and I carry him up the stairs to our apartment, to become his at-home nurses (also, he doesn't want actual at-home nurses, just me and Ace to do it!), to change his diapers, to shower him with all of our attention, to skip out on our medical appointments, or hanging out with friends, or having a life outside of caring for him! Ace kindly told him the reality of what would happen - that he would be left in his own waste for hours at a time on our sofa, uncared for completely, and that's IF we could somehow magic him up the stairs to our apartment. That it wasn't a safe option for him, me, or her overall.
She advocated the same to his team of doctors at UofM and they wholeheartedly agreed. So, Rob decided that UofM was a horrible hospital and got himself transferred to the VA hospital instead. And the VA set him up for physical therapy and radiation treatments, which he didn't want and refused to comply, and again Ace explained to the VA doctors that it wasn't safe for Rob to be released to our apartment - as we can't give him the care that he needs or wants, let alone the stairs. The VA docs agreed.
So Rob decided to sign out AMA (against medical advice) and to take a bus to Philly, to live in a homeless shelter. He decided that two days ago - sending hundreds of texts and voicemails to Ace, my aunties, all of his exes, and myself with an ultimatum that if he didn't get his way, he was going to opt out of all medical care and live in a homeless shelter in Philly. And so, my sister and I responded with, "Rob, you are a grown man who can make your own decisions. If you want to leave for Philly, so be it. Happy travels."
So, yesterday, Rob signed himself out AMA and bought a bus ticket. He was stuck at the bus station for three hours, as he didn't find it so easy to get strangers to help get him on a bus right away. We know about this because he called my aunties, screaming that this was Ace's fault. I calmly reminded Ace that it was NOT her fault, but his own decision. As my mother ironically used to say often of others, "Ain't no fool like an old fool.". We decided that if he remained stranded, Ace would pick him up at the bus station and admit him to another hospital. At 8pm on a Friday night, he called Ace to let her know that he made it onto a bus and was on his way to Philly. And she responded, "Okay, have fun, then." And he was super angry with her response and she tiredly said, "What do you want me to say, Rob? You're doing what you wanted to do now. This is your decision." He got angry and hung up on her.
And Ace and I shrugged and went back to watching "Severance" on our new sofa - a new sleeper sofa that we had to buy recently because Rob soiled our last sofa, due to us being unprepared about his diaper situation and we were forced to junk the old one. Btw... the show is SO very good and we finished the first season wanting more. :-)
Our friends, relatives, and therapists have been nothing but supportive of us during this whole thing. My aunties and Rob's sons think he's f-ing nuts for leaving like this, but everyone is in agreement that Ace and I have done more than enough for our brother. Most within our circle are arguing that we went beyond what most siblings would do for one another for Rob.
I can't say that I did much (I'm the "scribe" of this quest!), but I know that Ace certainly did a lot for Rob. She visited Rob in the hospital, religiously, every other day of the week. It didn't matter if she felt sick that day or tired, during snowstorms and rainstorms, she spent a lot of money on Uber going to visit Rob so he wouldn't feel alone in the hospital. She bought his soiled clothing home from the hospital and washed them for him, almost every visit. Rob insisted that the hospital food was inedible, so she spent a lot of money sending takeout to his room every day.
We both skipped doctor appointments to be there for him. I skipped my appointment for seeing an eye doctor who could maybe help with my eye condition, because it was a "maybe" and my sister was too worn out, trying to visit Rob that week and take me to my appointment. I opted out of going, telling her that it was okay, that Rob was more important. She insisted that she could do both, but I saw that she couldn't, she was so very worn out, so I sacrificed my appointment for her sake and Rob's. But mostly for her sake. =p
And now, he's run off. I feel a little guilty that my reaction is a resounding "OH, THANK GOD! WE'RE FREE!!!" I know that my sister worries still and I'm trying to encourage her that this is for the best. I went into my bank account and bought us a shipment of Maryland blue crabs for the weekend, it's our usual summer tradition, after all. We plan to have a crab feast this weekend while watching John Wick 4, to relax and slowly put our lives back to normalcy again.
I love my brother and I wish him the best in his life, no matter what. The same way that I love my problematic parents still. However, Ace and I must live our lives and do what's best for us. And Ace and i both made a promise to each other - when we grow old and very sick, if it becomes a burden to the other like it has been with Rob, it's totally okay to put the other in a nice nursing home!
Anyway, sorry for this book-length rant. It was a LOT to explain and recap. lol. No need to respond or reply - I just wanted to vent/rant on this Saturday A.M., is all. And to update anyone who is wondering what happened after my last post here. Cliffhangers suck! :-)
Be excellent to each other. And peace out! <3

2023.06.10 12:26 NogginKnocker420 Meth saved my life
Fr bro, meth is very therapeutic. Going into psychosis after not sleeping for a couple weeks really puts things into perspective. The shadow people and the voices really help to guide me in the right direction and influence me to make the right decisions. For example, my family was constantly nagging at me about my meth use and would refuse to accept that it's bettering me as a person. The voices gave me advice that fixed the issue completely. They helped me realize that it's impossible for my family to constantly nag at me if they aren't alive. I kinda miss them now but the feeling of missing them doesn't even compare to how annoying it was listening to them telling me I need rehab when I'm not even addicted. The doctor from the trailor park literally prescribed it to me. So I don't understand how me just smoking my medicine is an issue when Grandmas junkie ass literally gets to shoot up her insulin and nobody bats an eye. Ohhh rightttt she has "diabetes". Bull fucking shit diabetes isn't even real, that's just an excuse she uses to justify banging insulin into her veins all day. She's the fucking addict here not me

2023.06.10 12:22 Jhonjournalist Children Lost in a Plane Crash Found Alive After 40 Days
| Four Native youngsters who vanished 40 days prior in the wake of enduring a little plane accident in the Amazon wilderness were found alive Friday, Colombian specialists reported, finishing a serious pursuit that held the country. The youngsters were separated from everyone else when searchers tracked down them and are currently getting clinical consideration, President Gustavo Petro told correspondents upon his re-visitation to Bogota from Cuba, where he consented to a truce arrangement with delegates of the Public Freedom Armed force rebel bunch. 4 Children Lost in a Plane Crash Found Alive The president said the young people are an “illustration of endurance” and anticipated their adventure “will stay ever.” No subtleties were quickly delivered on how the adolescents figured out how to get by all alone for such countless days. The accident occurred in the early long stretches of May 1, when the Cessna single-motor propeller plane with six travelers and a pilot pronounced a crisis because of a motor disappointment. The little airplane tumbled off the radar a brief time frame later and a mad quest for survivors started. Fourteen days after the accident, on May 16, a hunt group tracked down the plane in a thick fix of the rainforest and recuperated the collections of the three grown-ups ready, however, the little youngsters were mysteriously gone. Detecting that they could be alive, Colombia’s military moved forward the chase after the youngsters and flew 150 fighters with canines into the area to follow the gathering of four kin, ages 13, 9, 4, and 11 months. Many workers from Native clans likewise helped search. - On Friday, the military tweeted pictures showing a gathering of warriors and volunteers presenting with the kids, who were enclosed by warm covers.
- One of the troopers held a container to the littlest youngster’s lips.
- The flying corps later shared a video on Twitter showing warriors utilizing a line to stack the kids onto a helicopter that then, at that point, took off in obscurity.
- The tweet said the airplane was made a beeline for the town of San Jose del Guaviare, however, gave no further subtleties.
During the pursuit, in a space where permeability is enormously restricted by fog and thick foliage, troopers on helicopters dropped boxes of food into the wilderness, trusting that it would assist with supporting the kids. Planes flying over the wilderness terminated flares to assist with looking through groups on the ground around evening time, and heroes utilized bull horns that impacted a message recorded by the kin’s grandma, advising them to remain in one spot. On Friday, after affirming the youngsters had been saved, the president expressed that for some time he had accepted the kids were protected by one of the traveling clans that meander the distant area of the wilderness where the plane fell and have little contact with specialists. Yet, Petro added that the youngsters were first found by one of the salvage canines that fighters took into the wilderness. Authorities didn’t express the way that far the youngsters were from the accident site when they were found. In any case, the groups had been looking through inside a 4.5-kilometer (almost 3-mile) sweep from the site where the little plane plunged into the woodland floor. As the hunt advanced, warriors tracked down little signs in the wilderness that persuaded them to think the youngsters were all the while living, including a couple of impressions, a child jug, diapers, and bits of natural product that seemed as though it had been nibbled by people. 2023.06.10 12:22 throwawayacct2111 how can i (25f) help my fiancé (25m) feel better about himself
we recently moved in together after being long distance and our wedding is coming up soon. Prior to now, it had been a little less than a year since i saw my partner besides video calls. He has gained a significant amount of weight and i can tell it bothers him, and i think he suffers from depression
i have suggested that he comes on walks with me and our dog, going to the gym, or signing up for active programs (like doggy agility) and he declines because he says he’s out of shape, or sometimes he will agree but doesn’t actually want to follow through. i’ve been able to cook for us and i’ve been making healthier food, which he does seem to really enjoy. he does have a bad habit of snacking in his office though
today our couch broke when he was sitting on it. in the last month, the couch leg was starting to bend on the end he would sit, but i fixed it by fixing the screw of it. but today, the wood underneath the couch gave in and broke completely. i had a fear this would happen and i don’t know if there’s anything i can do for my fiancé. he knows his weight is a problem. he’s always been a bit bigger but not like this
he does have a therapist but he usually wants to spend his money on other things instead of making appointments. i do want to suggest that he speaks with them again soon but i am afraid of overstepping. i’m worried about him
this change i think has also affected his libido. overall his attitude has changed drastically over the last year or so. he’s a lot more snappy and irritable. he did start adhd medicine though, and has been cycling through new meds every month about to find what works best for him. he also is suffering from daily jaw pain that his doctors think is TMJ disorder
he works from home and chooses his own hours. he usually works 3 ten to twelve hour days, and 2 days he works about seven to eight hours.
should i encourage other forms of activity? or more encouragement towards mental health? i am scared to approach the topic because I don’t want to make him defensive
any advice or ideas are welcome, thank you

ATUL PAL Lawyer, LLM Candidate from London School of Economics and Political Science (2023-2024), LLB (Delhi University), BA History (Hindu College), MA History (IGNOU)
Its May 27th, 1923 and the location is the city of Furth in Northern Bavaria of Germany. Let us examine the backdrop of this important date in retrospect. The world fresh from the first great war mostly oblivious to the impending cataclysm was a hotbed of ideas and individuals. To put things into perspective, Mussolini and Stalin weren’t a year old as the premiers of Italy and USSR, respectively. Adolf Hitler was half a year away from the famous Beer Hall Putsch which would fame him as the worldwide usurper. The Lausanne treaty which disintegrated the 600 years old Ottoman Empire was awaiting its implementation. Technically, Ottoman Empire was alive. Sun Yat-Sen’s Kuomintang forged an alliance with Chinese Communist Party only to fight one of the bloodiest civil wars of all times, couple of decades later. What makes this date special?? It was on this day the former American Secretary of State, National Security Advisor, political theorist and unarguably one of the most prominent diplomats of the 20th century who completes 100 years of his life – Henry Alfred Kissinger was born.
Kissinger, a Jew fled the onslaught of Nazi Germany alongside his family in 1938 to the United States. An academic excellence, he received his education from Harvard University. Kissinger worked closely with Hans Morgenthau – who is considered to be the father of international relations. He had already started writing on the ideas of realpolitik, and even published a book named “A world restored” which studied balance of power politics in post-Napoleonic Europe alongside excelling in study of world order post the Treaty of Westphalia, 1648 which promulgated the modern nation-state system. Kissinger was the first man to use the word “legitimacy” in terms of acceptance and not justice as it is commonly confused by mentioning European politics and the five great powers post the Concert of Europe 1815. By the time, Kissinger was already becoming popular due to his proximity to the Presidential candidate Nelson Rockefeller. It was around this time he met Richard Nixon. Nixon became the President of United States in 1969. Kissinger was appointed as the National Security Advisor.
It was his stint as the Secretary of State and National Security Advisor under Nixon that made him an international figure. With the Vietnam war raging, Kissinger favoured a negotiating strategy to sign an armistice between the Communist North Vietnam and US backed South Vietnam. Talks materialised and culminated in the Paris Peace Accords. Kissinger and Le Duc Tho won the Nobel peace prize making it the most polemical as the committee members felt that peace was still not restored in Vietnam. The prize was later returned back by Tho as the peace accords had visibly failed after the fall of Saigon in 1975. Kissinger also openly supported Pakistan in the Bangladeshi war of liberation in 1971 often running contrary with India and Indira Gandhi. America withdrew on the accounts of strong Soviet backing to India. He pioneered the policy of ‘détente’ relaxing tensions with the Soviet Union and negotiating the Strategic Arms Limitations Talks (SALT 1 Treaty) and Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with General Secretary of the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev alongside fostering close relations with other European allies. Kissinger’s highest point came during his 1972 visit to china. This was the start of the famous “ping-pong” diplomacy. On the backdrop of the Sino-Soviet rift of the late 60s, Kissinger was received by Mao where he later laid the grounds for Richard Nixon’s visit to China, apparently the first by a US president.
The term “shuttle diplomacy” which means negotiating by a third party to solve disputes between two countries was also given fillip during Kissinger’s time. It was on display in the middle-east especially during the Yom Kippur War between Arabs and Israel of 1973 and the arrangement of Camp David Accords of 1979 which established peace between Israel and Egypt regarding the dispute of the Sinai Peninsula. Kissinger worked closely with Shah of Iran before the Islamic Revolution threw the Persian monarchy in 1979. In Latin America, Operation Condor – series of CIA backed coups and assassinations of left-wing socialist leaders between 1975-1989 was launched. The most barbaric ones being the Chilean and Argentinian military coup under General Augusto Pinochet and General Jorge Videla, respectively. This step was seen more of an extension of the Truman doctrine which stated containing the communist take-overs in the Cold War era. After the Watergate scandal which was a major humiliation and brought the downfall of Richard Nixon, Kissinger’s influence also diminished but he continued to play a major part in US foreign relations.
Kissinger has remained politically active throughout and is regarded having the potent-most diplomatic opinions in geopolitical issues that has grappled the world since. From the 1989 Tiananmen massacre, Yugoslav wars, US-Iran relations to the ongoing Russo-Ukraine crisis; his views are taken very seriously across the globe. Kissinger caused a stir in 2022 when he remarked that Ukrainians should prepare to cede some territories in order to reach a peace deal with Moscow invoked global criticism. He is one of the major propagators of the idea of “Finlandization” referring to policy of strict neutrality of the smaller country vis-à-vis its powerful neighbour as seen in Finland’s relation with Soviet Union post World War second. He rendered the same advice to NATO and Ukraine back in 2014. The delicate balance of operation of policies was tested by the Ukrainian President in his series of “NATO-romance”, which as predicted by Kissinger infuriated Russians resulting in a full-scale mobilisation of troops from her side. Considering his acumen in Chinese affairs, he has remained relevant and keeps giving insights on how to evade the conflict and approach the supercharged contemporary state of affairs between USA and China.
A realist with a dash of Machiavelli, Kissinger has never been new to controversies. Being a Jew, in a conversation with President Nixon he remarked – “the emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union is not an objective of American foreign policy, and if they put Jews into gas chambers in Soviet Union, it is not an American concern. Maybe a humanitarian concern”. Kissinger is often criticised on his role in curbing democratic institutions for diplomatic gains. Scholars for his actions in Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975 term him as a “war criminal”. He is also accused of turning a blind eye to the rise of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia; an estimated 2 million people died in the pogrom. With his own flaws and faults, Kissinger has remained one of the tallest figures in the 20th century especially during the Cold War era. His books “Diplomacy”, “World Order”, “On China” are no less than bibles of international relations and shows glaring glimpses of the astute and intellectual head that Kissinger carries. In-fact, one his books “Leadership” was released last year (Kissinger was 99!!). Kissinger’s list of most influential statesmen would fondly mention France’s Richelieu, Austria’s Metternich, British’s Castlereagh and Prussia’s Bismarck. After a full century of existence the world can safely conclude – “America’s Kissinger”!!!!

2023.06.10 12:16 ouijva is it worth me getting an ADHD diagnosis right now?
repeating from my last post, my doctor agrees that i’m somewhere within AuDHD however i can’t access RTC as i live in wales and therefore can’t be referred to psychiatry-uk (they don’t take private adult assessments). i’m a little scared getting an assessment elsewhere as it seems like some gps only consider psychiatry-uk to be reputable and i really cannot fork out private med costs if my gp doesn’t accept the shared care agreement.
i could be going to university in england in september meaning i would have to change to an english GP practice anyway - in that case would i be eligible for the RTC scheme and would it then be worthwhile to wait till september to try a diagnosis?
moving is still not confirmed though and i DO want this modified ASAP. my doctor warned me about the panorama doc (i know😒) and the importance of me finding a good clinic so i’m worried he won’t accept SCE if he’s not happy with it. i also get the impression he thinks i’m more autistic than adhd (i’m not, he thinks so only bc i have autistic brothers) so he will probably be even more critical. i’m considering berkeley and clinical partners - i know clinical partners have an NHS partnership as well as being GMT and CGQ registered so im veering on going with them. surely he would accept this?
i guess i’m just asking what would you do in my situation, should i wait or get diagnosed now, and if so which clinic would be best

2023.06.10 12:06 Jroyb Seeking Advice on Job Offer and Career Path as a Fresh Graduate
I hope you're doing well. I'm a soon-to-be graduate, receiving my diploma at the end of this month, and I'm currently navigating the job market in the field of Electronic-ICT. I have been actively searching for opportunities in the Developer (fullstack/backend/software) domains.
Recently, I've reached an interesting point in my job search. I have been in discussions with several companies, a few of them at the 2nd or 3rd stage of the interview process. However, yesterday I received an offer from a start-up consultancy company based in Grimbergen. They have around 5-6 developers in their team.
The unique aspect of this offer is that, as a start-up, they receive government support for certifying their new (junior) employees. This means that I would need to undergo a course via VDAB (Belgium's public employment service) which will be paid for by the company. During the certification period, which typically lasts 3-5 months depending on my progress, I would receive a monthly stipend of 1600 euros from the government, in addition to ecocheques and transportation benefits.
The certification program includes three courses: ServiceNow (a cloud platform), ITIL, and scripting. Once I complete these certifications, I will be offered a permanent position with my employer. While the exact salary was not mentioned, the employer assured me it would not be lower than the average pay in the industry. I anticipate it to be in the range of 2300-2700 euros gross per month. Additionally, the offer includes a company car, gas card, phone, laptop, and insurance.
I'm reaching out to the community for advice and opinions on this opportunity. As a fresh graduate, I'm looking to make a well-informed decision about my career path. What are your thoughts on the government-funded certification program and the overall package offered by the start-up? Would you consider accepting the offer in my position?
I greatly appreciate any insights or experiences you can share. Thank you all in advance for your help.
TL;DR: I'm a fresh graduate in Electronic-ICT and have been searching for developer roles. I received a job offer from a start-up consultancy. They offer a government-funded certification program, where I'll receive a stipend during the 3-5 month certification period. After completing the certifications, I'll be offered a permanent position with a competitive salary, benefits, and a car. I'm seeking advice on whether to accept the offer. Any thoughts or experiences are appreciated.

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so
on.As Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).
“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.)
“And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the resetting. Maybe resetting' wasn't a good term.only
one can claim to be the most powerful superhero .And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible, 5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel or otherwise
"By the way, it's not hyperbole because we made the movie."And we made him this powerful.
There's nothing so wrong with “Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two- hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero.
It's no less numbing to find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of the naïve delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in and then waved away with dazzle and noise. Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” offers a moral realm that draws no lines, a personal one of simplistic stakes, a political one that suggests any interpretation, an audiovisual one that rehashes long-familiar tropes and repackages overused devices for a commercial experiment that might as well wear its import as its title. When I was in Paris in 1983, Jerry Lewis—yes, they really did love him there—had a new movie in theaters. You're Crazy, Jerry."Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse " could be retitled 'You're a Superhero, Dwayne'—it's the marketing team's PowerPoint presentation extended to feature length.
In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film.
“They kept that all the way under wraps, and I didn't know until maybe a day or two before the premiere,” he recently said Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse FULLMOVIE ONLINE

Unfortunately, this is not possible since Hulu currently does not offer any of the free episodes of this series streaming at this time. the MTV channel, which you get by subscribing to cable or satellite TV services. Is Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Fullmovie Online For Free on Disney Plus?
Unfortunately, Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is not currently available to stream on Disney Plus and it's not expected that the film will release on Disney Plus until late December at the absolute earliest.
While Disney eventually releases its various studios' films on Disney Plus for subscribers to watch via its streaming platform, most major releases don't arrive on Disney Plus until at least 45-60 days after the film's theatrical release.
Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has finally ended the box office blues. It will be a close call, but based on the estimates, the year's biggest opener remains Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with its $187 million start. Nonetheless, Wakanda Forever's $180 million opening is a huge one, being the biggest ever for the month of November (beating the $158 million of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), the second biggest of the year, and the 13th biggest of all time (though it could go up or down a few slots once the actuals come out). It led an overall weekend box office of $208 million, which is the fourth biggest of the year and the biggest by a long shot of the past four months, with no other weekend since July 8 -10 even going above $133 million.
This isn't the $202 million opening that we saw from Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in February 2018, nor should we expect the amazing legs that were able to get that film to an astonishing $700 million. With that said, expect it to perform strong throughout the holiday season, likely repeating the five-weekend number-one streak that the first film had, and it shouldn't have any trouble becoming the second highest grossing film of the year so far, beating the $411 million cume of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The audience response is strong, with the A CinemaScore falling below the first film's A+ but bouncing back from the B+'s earned by Doctor Strange 2 and Thor: Love and Thunder, which ranked among the worst for the MCU. improvement over the recent franchise installations, with the aforementioned films coming in at 74% and 64% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes, both at the lower end for Marvel films, while Wakanda Forever's 84% is closer to franchise norms, though not meeting the high bar set by the first Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's 96%.
The sequel opened to $150 million internationally, which Disney reports is 4% ahead of the first film when comparing like for likes at current exchange rates. Overall, the global cume comes to $330 million. Can it become the year's third film to make it past $1 billion worldwide despite China and Russia, which made up around $124 million of the first film's $682 million international box office, being out of play? It may be tough, but it's not impossible. Legging out past $500 million is plausible on the domestic front (that would be a multiplier of at least 2.7), and another $500 million abroad would be a drop of around $58 million from the original after excluding the two MIA markets. It'd be another story if audiences didn't love the film, but the positive reception suggests that Wakanda Forever will outperform the legs on this year's earlier MCU titles (Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder had multipliers of 2.2 and 2.3 respectively).
As for the rest of the box office, there's little to get excited about, with nothing else grossing above $10 million as Hollywood shied away from releasing anything significant not just this weekend but also over the previous two weekends. When Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opened in 2018, there was no counterprogramming that opened the same weekend, but Peter Rabbit and Fifty Shades Freed were in their second weekends and took second and third with $17.5 million and $17.3 million respectively. That weekend had an overall cume of $287 million compared to $208 million this weekend Take away the $22 million gap between the two Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse films and there's still a $57 million gap between the two weekends. The difference may not feel that large when a mega blockbuster is propping up the grosses, but the contrast is harsher when the mid-level films are the entire box office as we saw in recent months.
Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which is the biggest grosser of the rough post-summer, pre-Wakanda Forever season, came in second with just $8.6 million. Despite the blockbuster competition that arrived in its fourth weekend, the numbers didn't totally collapse, dropping 53 % for a cume of $151 million. Worldwide it is at $352 million, which isn't a great cume as the grosses start to wind down considering its $200 million budget. Still, it's the biggest of any film since Thor: Love and Thunder, though Wakanda Forever will overtake it any day now.
Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse came in third place in its fourth weekend, down 29% with $6.1 million, emerging as one of the season's most durable grossers and one of the year's few bright spots when it comes to films for adults. The domestic cume is $56.5 million Fourth place went to Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, which had a negligible drop of 5% for a $3.2 million sixth weekend and $40.8 million cume., in fact )
, which isn't surprising considering it's the only family film on the market, and it's close to grossing four times its $11.4 million opening. Still, the $72.6 million worldwide cume is soft given the $50 million budget , though a number of international markets have yet to open.
Finishing up the top five is Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which had its biggest weekend drop yet, falling 42% for a $2.3 million seventh weekend. Of course, that's no reason to frown for the horror film, which has a domestic cume of $103 million and global cume of $ 210 million from a budget of just $20 million.
The one new specialty title of note comes from a filmmaker we don't typically associate with the specialty box office: Steven Spielberg. The Beard's semi-autobiographical family drama Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles to $160k, a $40k average. The film expands to 600 theaters the day before Thanksgiving, and it has the potential to break out in a way that none of the other of the season's awards contenders have. We're also seeing very solid numbers from Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which grossed $1.7 million this weekend for a seventh place finish, bringing its cume to $5.8fff#vvvvvvvvd

2023.06.10 12:02 Doctor_of_Puns Madame Blavatsky on "The Himalayan Brothers"
SIR—
"On the authority of an adept” (?) “they” (the Theosophists and Madame Blavatsky)
“are all mediums under the influence of the lower spirits” Such is the sentence used by you in an editorial review of Mr. Sinnett’s
Occult World (
Spiritualist, June 17th). Doubtful as its pertinency might appear, I personally found nothing very objectionable in it, the more so, as elsewhere you do me the honour to express your conviction that (whether controlled by good or bad spirits) I yet am a “strong physical medium”—that term precluding at least the suspicion of my being a regular impostor. This letter then is not directed against you, but rather against the pretensions of a would-be “adept.” Another point should be also attended to before I proceed, in order that the situation may be as clearly defined as possible.
Finding myself for the period of nearly seven years one of the best abused individuals under the sun, I rather got accustomed to that sort of thing. Hence, I would hardly take up the pen now to defend my own character. If people, besides forgetting that I am a woman, and an old woman, are dull enough to fail to perceive that had I declared myself anything in creation, save a Theosophist and one of the founders of our Society, I would have been in every respect—materially as well as socially—better off in the world’s consideration, and that therefore, since, notwithstanding all the persecution and opposition encountered, I persist in remaining and declaring myself one, I cannot well be that charlatan and pretender some people would see in me—I really cannot help it. Fools are unable, and the wise unwilling to see the absurdity of such an accusation, for as Shakespeare puts it:
Folly in fools bears not so strong a note As foolery in the wise, when wit doth dote.
It is not then to defend myself that I claim space in your columns, but to answer one whose
ex-cathedra utterances have revolted the sense of justice of more than one of our Theosophists in India, and to defend them—who have a claim on all the reverential feeling that my nature is capable of.
A new correspondent, one of those dangerous, quasi-anonymous individuals who abuse their literary privilege of hiding their true personality and thus shirk responsibility behind an initial or two, has lately won a prominent place in the columns of your journal. He calls himself an “adept”; that is easy enough, but does or rather can he prove it? To begin with, in the sight of the Spiritualists as much as in that of sceptics in general, an “adept,” whether he hails from Tibet, India, or London, is all one. The latter will persist in calling him an impostor; and the former, were he even to prove his powers, in seeing in him either a medium or a juggler. Now your “J.K.” when he states in the
Spiritualist of June 24th, that “the phenomena attendant upon real adeptship are on an entirely different plane from “Spiritualism” risks, nay is sure, to have every one of the above expletives flung in his face by both the above-mentioned classes.
Could he but prove what he claims, namely, the powers conferring upon a person the title of an initiate, such epithets might well be scorned by him. Aye,—but I ask again, is he ready to make good his claim? The language used by him, to begin with, is not that which a true adept would ever use. It is dogmatic and authoritative throughout, and too full of insulting aspersions against those who are not yet proved to be worse or lower than himself; and fails entirely to carry conviction to the minds of the profane as of those who do know something of adepts and initiates—that it is one of such proficients who now addresses them. Styling himself an adept, whose “Hierophant is a western gentleman,” but a few lines further on he confesses his utter ignorance of the existence of a body which cannot possibly be ignored by any true adept! I say “cannot” for there is no accepted neophyte on the whole globe but at least knows of the Himalayan Fraternity. The sanction to receive the last and supreme initiation, the real “word at low breath” can come but through those fraternities in Egypt, India, and Thibet to one of which belongs “Koot Hoomi Lal Singh.” True, there is “adept” and adept, and they differ, as there are adepts in more than one art and science. I, for one, know in America of a shoemaker, who advertised himself as “an adept in the high art of manufacturing Parisian cothurns.” J.K. speaks of Brothers “on the soul plane,” of “divine Kabbalah culminating in God,” of “slave magic,” and so on, a phraseology which proves to me most conclusively that he is but one of those dabblers in western occultism which were so well represented some years ago, by French-born “Egyptians” and “Algerians,” who told people their fortunes by the
Tarot, and placed their visitors within enchanted circles with a Tetragrammaton inscribed in the centre. I do not say J.K. is one of the latter, I beg him to understand. Though quite unknown to me and hiding behind his two initials, I will not follow his rude example and insult him for all that. But I say and repeat that his language sadly betrays him. If a Kabbalist at all, then himself and his “Hierophant” are but the humble self-taught pupils of the mediaeval, and so-called “Christian” Kabbalists; of adepts, who, like Agrippa, Khunrath, Paracelsus, Vaughan, Robert Fludd, and several others, revealed their knowledge to the world
but to better conceal it, and who never gave the key to it in their writings. He bombastically asserts his own knowledge and power, and proceeds to pass judgment on people of whom he knows and can know nothing. Of the “Brothers” he says: “If they are true adepts, they have not shown much worldly wisdom, and the organization which is to inculcate their doctrine is a complete failure, for even the very first psychical and physical principles of true Theosophy and occult science are quite unknown to and unpractised by the members of that organization—the Theosophical Society.”
How does he know? Did the Theosophists take him into their confidence? And if he knows something of the British Theosophical Society, what
can he know of those in India? If he belongs to any of them, then does he play false to the whole body and is a traitor. And if he does not, what has he to say of its practitioners, since the Society in general, and especially its esoteric sections that count but a very few “chosen ones”—are secret bodies?
The more attentively I read his article the more am I inclined to laugh at the dogmatic tone prevailing in it. Were I a Spiritualist, I would be inclined to suspect in it a good “goak” of John King, whose initials are represented in the signature of J.K. Let him first learn, that mirific Brother of the “Western Hermetic Circle in the soul-plane,” a few facts about the adepts in general, before he renders himself any more ridiculous.
(1) No true adept will on any consideration whatever reveal himself as one, to the profane. Nor would he ever speak in such terms of contempt of people, who are certainly no more silly, and, in many an instance, far wiser than himself. But were even the Theosophists the poor misled creatures he would represent them to be, a true adept would rather help than deride them.
(2) There never was a true Initiate but knew of the secret Fraternities in the East. It is not Eliphas Levi who would ever deny their existence, since we have his authentic signature to the contrary. Even Ρ. B. Randolph, that wondrous, though erratic, genius of America, that half-initiated seer, who got his knowledge in the East, had good reasons to know of their actual existence, as his writings can prove.
(3) One who ever perorates upon his occult knowledge, and speaks of practising
his powers in the name of some particular prophet, deity, or Avatar, is but a sectarian mystic at best. He cannot be an adept in the Eastern sense—a
Mahatma, for his judgment will always be biased and prejudiced by the colouring of his own special and dogmatic religion.
(4) The great science, called by the vulgar “magic,” and by its Eastern proficients
Gupta Vidya, embracing as it does each and every science, since it is the acme of knowledge, and constitutes the perfection of philosophy, is universal: hence—as very truly remarked—cannot be confined to one particular nation or geographical locality. But, as Truth is
one, the method for the attainment of its highest proficiency must necessarily be also
one. It cannot be subdivided, for, once reduced to parts, each of them, left to itself, will, like rays of light, diverge from, instead of converging to, its centre, the ultimate goal of knowledge; and these parts can rebecome the
Whole only by collecting them together again, or each fraction will remain but a fraction.
This truism, which may be termed elementary mathematics for little boys, has to be re-called, in order to refresh the memory of such “adepts” as are too apt to forget that “Christian Kabbalism” is but a fraction of
Universal Occult Science. And, if they believe that they have nothing more to learn, then the less they turn to “Eastern Adepts” for information the better and the less trouble for both. There is but one royal road to “Divine Magic”; neglect and abandon it to devote yourself specially to one of the paths diverging from it, and like a lonely wanderer you will find yourself lost in an inextricable labyrinth. Magic, I suppose, existed millenniums before the Christian era; and, if so, are we to think then, with our too learned friends, the modern “Western Kabbalists,” that it was all
Black Magic, practised by the “Old firm of Devil & Co.”? But together with every other person who knows something of what he or she talks about, I say that it is nothing of the kind; that J.K. seems to be superbly ignorant even of the enormous difference which exists between a Kabbalist and an Occultist. Is he aware, or not, that the Kabbalist stands, in relation to the Occultist, as a little detached hill at the foot of the Himalayas, to Mount Everest? That what is known as the Jewish Kabbala of Simon Ben Jochai, is already the disfigured version of its primitive source, the Great Chaldean
Book of Numbers? That as the former, with its adaptation to the Jewish Dispensation, its mixed international Angelology and Demonology, its Orphiels and Raphaels and Greek Tetragrams, is a pale copy of the Chaldean, so the Kabbala of the Christian Alchemists and Rosicrucians is naught in its turn but a tortured edition of the Jewish. By centralizing the Occult Power and his course of actions, in some one national God or
Avatar, whether in Jehovah or Christ, Brahma or Mahomet, the Kabbalist diverges the more from the one central Truth.
It is but the Occultist, the Eastern adept, who stands a Free Man, omnipotent through its own Divine Spirit as much as man can be on earth. He has rid himself of all human conceptions and religious side-issues; he is at one and the same time a Chaldean Sage, a Persian Magi, a Greek Theurgist, an Egyptian Hermetist, a Buddhist Rahat and an Indian Yogi. He has collected into one bundle all the separate fractions of Truth widely scattered over the nations, and holds in his hand the One Truth, a torch of light which no adverse wind can bend, blow out or even cause to waver. Not he the Prometheus who robs but a portion of the Sacred Fire, and therefore finds himself chained to Mount Caucasus for his intestines to be devoured by vultures, for he has secured God within himself and depends no more on the whim and caprice of either good or evil deities.
True, “Koot Hoomi” mentions Buddha. But it is not because the brothers hold him in the light of God or even of “a God,” but simply because he is the Patron of the Thibetan Occultists, the greatest of the
Illuminati and adepts, self-initiated by his own Divine Spirit or “God-self” unto all the mysteries of the invisible universe. Therefore to speak of imitating “the life of Christ,” or that of Buddha, or Zoroaster, or any other man on earth chosen and accepted by any one special nation for its God and leader, is to show oneself a Sectarian even in Kabbalism, that fraction of the one “Universal Science”—Occultism. The latter is pre-historic and is coeval with intelligence. The Sun shines for the heathen Asiatic as well as for the Christian European and for the former still more gloriously, I am glad to say.
To conclude, it is enough to glance at that sentence of more than questionable propriety, and more fit to emanate from the pen of a Jesuit than that of a Kabbalist, which allows of the supposition that the “Brothers” are only a branch of the old established firm of “Devil and Co.” to feel convinced that beyond some “Abracadabra” dug out from an old mouldy MS. of Christian Kabbalism, J.K.
knows nothing. It is but on the unsophisticated profane, or a very innocent Spiritualist, that his bombastic sentences, all savouring of the
Anche is son pittore, that he may produce some sensation.
True, there is no need of going absolutely to Thibet or India to find
some knowledge and power “which are latent in every human soul”; but the acquisition of the highest knowledge and power require not only many years of the severest study enlightened by a superior intelligence and an audacity bent by no peril; but also as many years of retreat in comparative solitude, and association with but students pursuing the same object, in a locality where nature itself preserves like the neophyte an absolute and unbroken stillness if not silence! where the air is free for hundreds of miles around of all mephytic influence; the atmosphere and human magnetism absolutely pure, and—no animal blood is spilt. Is it in London or even the most country-hidden village of England that such conditions can be found?

2023.06.10 11:54 ampisands Very overwhelmed by needing to afford to live and save
I'm a 19 year old about to turn 20. I am also coming up on my 2nd year living away from my parents - not a coincidence. This might be a bit long, but I would really appreciate any advice as someone who doesn't have anyone to ask.
I'm in the process of transitioning from a $17.05/hr job with fairly set hours of 35 a week to a $20/hr job with the option to work and get overtime as much as I want. I'm also a full time student, so this is kind of perfect. For the past 6 months, I've been putting away $1,000 a month. In March, I opened a Goldman Sachs saving account and moved all of my savings over.
Here's the dilemma. My lease is ending in July, and I just lost my health insurance (Medicaid) that I was on under my mom. I've reapplied, but I make more money than my mom and don't have kids, so I'm not hopeful. I have severe chronic asthma and my medications alone, aside from doctor's apps and the therapy I was going to, are $300. Not necessarily a month, and I can probably stretch a 3 month inhaler to 6 if needed.
My lease is up in about a month now. I chose not to renew after one of my roommates was late on rent by over a week, forcing me to take money out of my savings. She still has not paid it in full.
I don't have any roommate prospects as neither of my roommates seem financially stable enough to sign a lease with, so I'm likely going to need to move into a studio which will be $1,000-$1,200. This is opposed to the ~$600 a month I was paying before. I can't move into a cheaper, old apartment - I have tried this, and if a place happens to have mold it could very possibly kill me. Most of them have mold. Well, all of them in my experience, but I'm sure one or two might not. My other roommates are facing homelessness, and I'm trying to help them as much as I can without being willing to contribute financially or live with them.
I still want to put at least a grand away a month, but I also want to grow my savings. The savings account is one thing but I feel like I may need more. I don't qualify for government assistance anymore so there is no help in that regard. I suppose I'm technically disabled, but I'm not willing to live under the conditions disability implies if it's avoidable.
Currently I have no student loans because I'm at a tech school. I will definitely be needing car repairs soon - nothing too expensive, under $300, but I'm scared I may need a new car entirely at some point soon. This one is 14 years old. My credit is very good for having started it less than a year ago.
I want to buy a house by the time I'm 25. I want to afford kids. I want to go to college.
How can I better achieve these goals? Is living in the studio a horrible decision, and should I very quickly find a roommate? Is there any way to expedite the home-ownership part of this? How can I grow my savings more?

2023.06.10 11:53 FriklyForHome The Magic of Auto Close & Soft Close Hinges: Elevating Your Door Experience
| Auto Close Hinges: Effortless Convenience at Your Fingertips We've all been there – accidentally leaving a door ajar or forgetting to close it entirely. That's where auto close hinges step in. These intelligent hinges utilize a built-in mechanism that ensures doors automatically close after being opened. Whether it's an interior door or an outdoor gate, auto close hinges offer convenience, security, and peace of mind. Auto Close & Soft Close Hinges So how do they work? Auto close hinges employ an adjustable spring mechanism that controls the door's closing speed. As you open the door, the spring is activated and begins storing energy. When you release the door, the spring's tension propels it forward, gently closing it. The best part? You don't have to worry about manual intervention or loud door slams – the hinge takes care of everything. Auto close hinges find applications in various settings, including homes, offices, restaurants, and even public places. They ensure that doors consistently close, enhancing safety by preventing access to restricted areas. Moreover, they come in a range of styles and finishes to match any decor, adding both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Soft Close Hinges: A Whisper-Like Door Closure Have you ever closed a door only to be greeted by an unsettling, abrupt bang? That's where soft close hinges come to the rescue, offering a silent and gentle door closure. These hinges are perfect for reducing noise pollution, preventing damage to walls or furniture, and enhancing the overall ambiance of a space. Similar to auto close hinges, soft close hinges employ a specialized mechanism. This mechanism features a hydraulic damper that slows down the door's closing speed as it reaches the final few inches. This controlled deceleration ensures that the door glides effortlessly, coming to a gentle and silent stop. No more slammed doors or waking up your household when using the restroom at night! Soft close hinges are particularly popular in kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and any areas where tranquility and peace are valued. They also shine in commercial spaces like hotels or hospitals, where quiet and calm environments are essential for guests and patients. The Perfect Duo: Auto Close and Soft Close Hinges Together Imagine the best of both worlds – a door that automatically closes and softly shuts without any noise or effort from your end. That's precisely what happens when auto close and soft close hinges join forces. Combining these two technologies provides the ultimate door-closing experience, where convenience, safety, and tranquility converge. By integrating both hinges, you can enjoy the benefits of automatic closing along with the whisper-like closure of a soft close mechanism. This dynamic duo ensures that your doors are always secure, while the gentle and noiseless closure brings harmony to your surroundings. Auto and soft close hinges are more than simply door accessories; they are game changers. You never have to worry about forgetting to close a door again with auto close hinges, and soft close hinges prevent door bangs and noise pollution. They give an unparalleled degree of convenience, safety, and quiet. Don't underestimate the power of auto close and soft close hinges if you're thinking about replacing your doors, whether at home or in a business setting. Accept the wonder of simple door closure, say goodbye to noisy fringe and revel in the peaceful beauty of a silently closed door. submitted by FriklyForHome to u/FriklyForHome [link] [comments] |
