21F, feel like I don’t know what my purpose is here. Since I was a kid I wanted to be a flight attendant, my mum quickly shut that idea down with the explanation “they’re just waitresses in the air.”

the predicament:
i have been struggling w/ heat off my X1E G5 (w/ i7-12700H CPU) ever since i bought it. especially when connected to A/C power, i found that it is running at turbo clock speeds even when idling. fans whirring away constantly - absolute madness IMHO. i confess, i tolerate noise very badly in general.
it is my daily driver for work, which consists mostly of sysadmin stuff, shell scripting and the like. i did not buy it for power, but b/c i wanted a large enough screen in as thin and light a form factor as possible. and the trackpoint is a must for me. this machine, btw has one of the best trackpoints i ever used, ever. X1E Gen3 is rubbish in comparison, i used X1 Yoga Gen2 a while back, it was not great either. the T450s/T440 were only ok. The X1E Gen5 has a really, really good trackpoint.
w/ that said, the g5 is NOT a thin and light machine by any stretch of the imagination. it is a P1 re-badged and it is not worthy of the X1 brand. and just for context, the X1E Gen3 (w/ i7-10850H CPU) is a thin, light and freezing cold machine compared to the Gen5.
i also made the mistake of buying it w/ an i7 CPU (it was on sale), which i regretted almost immediately.
half measures:
so since the only effective way of making the CPU run cooler - undervolting - is not an option (wtf???), i resorted to disabling turbo boost, which improved things only mildly with painful disadvantages: it was still idling at 2.3+ GHz, which is unacceptable, but obviously would not boost when there was actual need.
i also installed TPFanControl (https://github.com/nikolasgd/TPFanControl-dual-fan), which helped w/ the fans running constantly, but could not fix the actual issue of poor design: a hot running CPU that would not throttle properly paired with a heat-sink that was not up to the job.
i also turned on battery saver for all the time - this actually worked great when running off battery, but did nothing for me when on A/C power.
so i was thinking of selling this pile of mess (i have other major annoyances w/ this machine as well) and returning to the Gen 3 (luckily i still have it lying around).
the actual 'solution':
then, in my desperation and started toying w/ the idea of reducing the number of CPUs, of which this beast has 20, physical + logical totaled.
first i disabled the efficiency cores. this did not make much of a difference on its own, but paired w/ disabling turbo boost, it did bring temperatures down - and fans were on less frequently.
then i thought to hell w/ performance, i'll disable hyperthreading as well. and to my greatest surprise, things started to fall into place. the damned thing started throttling to around 1.3 GHz while idling. and it hovers around 1.6 - 1.9 GHz when doing light work, like running RDP ovre VPN and participating in Zoom/Teams/Meet video conferences.. woohoo!! my laptop was running around 65-70 C w/ the fan only occasionally kicking in.
so i got bold and re-enabled the efficiency cores AND turbo boost - and lo and behold, it is still throttling like when it is on Battery power. my fans are actually stopped most of the time, but the CPU spins to 4+ GHz when needed. happy days.
conclusion:
since i really don't use this laptop for power, but for its keyboard (pretty good), the 16" display (damned good) and the trackpoint (actually great), the cost of performance loss is minimal, while fan noise is literally eliminated (if i let the machine run at 80 C constantly, the fans almost never kick in) all the while, if i am running something that takes a bit of kick, i do have turbo boost and away we go - actually and figuratively...
definitely not for everyone, but i imagine i am not the only one happy w/ such a compromise.

LONG POST! I hate to bragg because I have seen so many discouraged with the process but we closed today and have the keys with a pretty smooth process! Only thing is I forgot to get a pic with us in front… We were able to find a home in the country side of South Jersey which was older but well kept. Built in 1978 so it definitely can use some updates but basement is finished, the updates the septic with a larger tank for us and reseeded the yard. We had a gap with the appraisal that they also took the majority of the difference so we could close. My husband is a grump because it is an older home with septic and well and oil. He says everything has to be replaced and all annoyed with me for pushing him to purchase and not rent any longer. Our home is just over 1600 sqft with a newly lined LARGE in-ground pool with a huge deck and .47 acres all fenced in. He has lost his mind IMO because the home was $363,636 6.1%. When all was said and done and we only had to close with $1,234. ZERO DOWN… We did do the grant for closing costs(second mortgage zero interest zero payment) Our original offer was 370,000. I know he will come around once we get a deep cleaning and have our things in the home. It is very livable, he is just delusional and thinks that after a yr of renting we would be able to get some luxurious home for our first buy. I’m happy and proud of us. Our 4 children finally have a home of their own (6,5,4 & 2.5). They can finally live with a lot less rules and I can relax if they make a mistake with markers or throw a toy at the wall. I just wanted to gush because I am proud of me/us … we got the F out of FL and found a decent home to purchase in and closed in under 40 days time. ** I will be sure to post a pic when we move in next week.

Hi everyone. I'm Gneerox. I usually main support classes in ARPGs. This season I grouped with Dyrn, Teko and Havoc616. We love ARPGs and are fairly well experienced with them (I've gotten far in D3, and decently far in Path of Exile).
I wanted to share our thoughts coming in blind to Diablo 4. None of us took advantage of early access. We did very little planning before hand. With all this, we ended up probably in the top 20 Level 100s (it's hard to tell), and had tons of fun playing the game!
I wanted to share some of my thoughts around Diablo 4 so far. In this post, I only speak for myself, and no one else in our group.
Here they are:
Items
When it comes to items, there are two things to look up: affix lines + legendary power. This is super cool, but they're all dynamic! I can't tell what and item is, based on name or picture anymore. That's fine. However, i think this has some (intended or unintended?) consequences.
Bluntly, it takes much longer to evaluate items. First, you have to switch your brain to know if the aspect on the item you're evaluating is better than the ones you have in your aspect tabs. Then you have to switch your brain to affixes in order to evaluate if the affixes are good for your build, or for another one you'd like to play in the future. This is, in theory, pretty cool! Nice depth. However, it adds complexity that I think needs to be solved for:
Many people are in the mode that they're searching for the "right" build, and my experience in D4 so far shows me that there's at least three different builds to make:
The reason I want more space is because I want multiple builds. And because I want multiple builds, I want multiple tabs just for those builds alone, and then I need "dump" tabs for all the gear I acquire while doing speed XP farming.
In the same theme of build diversity, it would be amazing if you could bring back the quick-build outfittewardrobe system from D3. I'd like to be able to click a button and have my entire build swapped to another one, with all associated costs announced up front.
Game Flow
The game is really fun! That Lilith is super hard is great. Group play feels really really good. The geniuses behind the ease in grouping, regardless of the levels of the people in the group can't be overstated. It feels SO good to go into a dungeon with my level 70 friend while I'm 100 and just blast with them, and everyone has fun.
We ran x2 Ice Shot Mage, WW barb & Pulverize druid. We'll probably write up our builds at some point soon.
My personal opinion is that there's a sleeper zDPS barb build that I'll mb make a video about soon.

(ps: Ked Bardu is my favorite town, but please please please get rid of chair next to the stash or make it so we can't interact with it).

- I'm finding doing "quick" evaluations very difficult, time consuming and dangerous while blasting. A loot filter system (even something as simple as "remove sacred" or "only show me gloves" would help so much in the field.
- We must have a search function in our stash tabs. Given the complexity of evaluating an item, I hate that I've lost tons of time re-evaluating items in my stash because I've switched context and I'm now looking for something different.
Many people are in the mode that they're searching for the "right" build, and my experience in D4 so far shows me that there's at least three different builds to make:
- A speed XP / speed farming build (Demise or Interrogation Room (RIP) farming is a perfect example of this)
- A high sigil build, for pushing Glyph XP and mb getting Shacos (copium)
- A bossing build (for ex: Lilith farming).
The reason I want more space is because I want multiple builds. And because I want multiple builds, I want multiple tabs just for those builds alone, and then I need "dump" tabs for all the gear I acquire while doing speed XP farming.
In the same theme of build diversity, it would be amazing if you could bring back the quick-build outfittewardrobe system from D3. I'd like to be able to click a button and have my entire build swapped to another one, with all associated costs announced up front.
Game Flow
- Having a faster leave/join party flow would be great. A leave-party keybind would be amaaazing, but fundamentally, the leave / join flow to reset a dungeon is flawed concept and should probably get removed from game in favor of an easier mechanic.
- I don't believe resources right now are in a good place, and probably needs tuning. I'm sure many people will talk about this in the coming weeks. "I'm out of mana" or waiting around for fury until you have BIS feels really bad.
- Build defining aspects like Echoing Fury feel like they're gated pretty hard. I'd love to see them be more abundant.
- Lastly, threat table feels a bit off. mobs will chase after a person who hasn't hit anything and is behind a person
The game is really fun! That Lilith is super hard is great. Group play feels really really good. The geniuses behind the ease in grouping, regardless of the levels of the people in the group can't be overstated. It feels SO good to go into a dungeon with my level 70 friend while I'm 100 and just blast with them, and everyone has fun.
We ran x2 Ice Shot Mage, WW barb & Pulverize druid. We'll probably write up our builds at some point soon.
My personal opinion is that there's a sleeper zDPS barb build that I'll mb make a video about soon.

This build is not as helpful as an aurabot per se, but supplies regen and speed an aurabot may not, while still providing some defensive layers. Plus, I just wanted to see if it worked. Recently Reddit Inc has announced changes to their API which, if enacted, will shut down many, if not all, 3rd party apps that a large number of Redditors use to access and enjoy their favourite communities - this one included.One of the most critical changes to the API is that it is moving from a free to a paid model, resulting in expenses that developers of 3rd party apps simply cannot afford. To put the price change in to context, Apollo, one of the most popular 3rd party apps for Reddit, is looking at a cost of $1.7 million per month to continue operating. That's a cost of $12,000 per 50 million API requests. In contrast, Apollo pays Imgur $166 for every 50 million API calls.
This means popular apps like Apollo, Reddit Is Fun, Narwhal and many more will have to shut down, permanently.
Even if you're not using a 3rd party app yourself, these changes are likely to impact the communities you enjoy as well, with the vast majority of moderation teams relying on 3rd party or self-made tools, that utilise Reddit's API. It paints a bleak picture of what is to come for those of us who use other tools, like Toolbox, Reddit Enhancement Suite and old.reddit.com.
Here's a little TLDR on why this is important.
So what are we planning?
On June 12th, we and a growing number of other subs - large and small - will participate in a blackout. Our subreddit will go private for 48 hours and during that time, you will not be able to view or post any content on MicrosoftFlightSim.
This action isn't something we take lightly.
We understand that many of you enjoy coming here on a daily basis to keep up with MSFS, but we believe that we must take a stand on this topic - and this is how we can do so.
We understand that Reddit is a company that has to make money in order to offer us a place to be the community that we are - but killing beloved 3rd party apps is not they way to do it. We are not asking Reddit to provide a paid service for free - we are asking for reasonable pricing for apps that people have come to love and depend on to participate in their communities.
We can't tell you that the blackout will solve the problem, because we simply don't know. But we have to try.

Reach out to Reddit via the channels available to you: Modmail reddit, comment in relevant posts regarding the API changes, submit your comments via the contact forms.
Spread the word about the changes and the consequences where you can. Doesn't have to be on Reddit. The important thing is getting it attention.

Hi, I’m a 20 year old male who is currently attending university. I have been feeling like this for a while but recently it has gotten to me more because of a situation that has happened to me a couple of days ago. I am in a society at my university. There’s this girl I really like who is also in this society. One night we were going out as it was the last social we were having together as a society. So I decided I should tell her how I feel before it’s too late. I manage to get her to walk with me alone and I tell her. She says that she feels the same way and asks why I didn’t tell her sooner. This obviously makes we very happy and we spent the whole night kissing and such (but I don’t go back to hers). We spend the whole night talking and such about how we’ve liked each other for a while. She also says she’s been telling other people in the society that she liked me for a while. However she mentions of a guy that she has been talking to for a while- they’re just talking nothing official. (It’s important to note that I already knew about this). And how she doesn’t know how she feels about both me and this guy. She is also going back home over the summer and she lives very far, and neither me nor this guy would be able to visit her. She mentions this to me, and I say let’s talk over the summer and try to get to know each other. She mentions that to me and say it could be a difficulty- but she doesn’t mention the other guy she is dating and how it would also be difficult for him. Bare in mind this guy lives nearby to me, so it would also be a struggle for him. She also keeps telling me I’m very handsome and that I could date anyone in the society, and asking why I like her out of everyone there. Anyway we say goodbye and leave for the night. A couple days later again by chance I’m out and she is too. So we hook up again. I had been messaging her if she’d like to go on a date a day beforehand which she said she may not have time but she’d let me know if she did. So I ask her if she knows when she is free throughout the night as she hadn’t mentioned it since but she either changes the topic of just doesn’t reply every time i ask. After sitting with her and kissing her for a while I ask if I can go back to hers . She says no I worry and ask if I overstepped. She says no she’ll explain later. So we go out and she gives the explanation: “my opinion is too high of you to bring you back” and then proceeds to say (somewhat believably) “if I didn’t care about you I’d defo bring you back “. I obviously accept, although a little jealous because a friend of hers had told me she had brought the other guy back. I tell myself maybe she doesn’t want sex to be the last time she sees me. But looking back on it I just think she was making excuses up. My mates gf also said to be careful because she might be playing me. I was also a little confused by this as she had left her housemates to be with me (on the last night they were spending together as a house). I asked if she still wanted to go on a date after a couple days of not messaging her as I hadn’t actually gotten a clear response from her she hasn’t responded when I asked her in person. She hasn’t responded yet but it hasn’t been very long. She also never really spoke to me when she was sobre just on nights out as a society. Do you think she was just using me? Any advice? For Christ YSW, I’ve gotten into Mass communication with psychology honours.
Disregarding the fees cost for FLAME (as I’ll only be going on scholarship), which university will be better in terms of placements and going abroad for masters?
I’ve heard some really interesting things about Christ Campus being overly weird about their rules and just being overrated in general. For FLAME, I’ve heard it’s worthless to pursue a degree there because it’s just for “rich kids who want to get a degree for the sake of it” and it doesn’t have good placements.
I’m not really sure how much truth these statements hold so if there’s any student who is currently studying in either of these Universities please provide answers to the following questions, I’d be immensely grateful:

2023.06.10 00:11 Synckh Home from grad school for summer - anyone else struggle with deciding what to do with makeup you left behind?
I went to grad school a 12 hour plane ride away from my home. Shipping from home to my school is wildly expensive, so I had to pick and choose the makeup and skincare I brought with me, since it needed to fit in luggage and carry-on with all the other essentials I had to bring. Adding to that, I’m in a tropical climate for grad school and foundation just melts off my face, so I can count on my hands the amount of times I’ve used the ones I did bring in the last ten months.
Well, now I’m home for the summer and seeing all the makeup I left behind. I only brought a carry-on bag with me to visit because I still had clothes and things at home that I could use. Now my brain is like “hey, we can bring the rest of the makeup back with us!!” I’m struggling with whether this is even a good idea or not since 1) I’m in a 7x14 room with limited storage and space, 2) I would have to get a suitcase or some sort of luggage, which costs money I should likely be saving even if it is from a thrift shop, and 3) I haven’t used any of this in 10 months, do I realllllly need it still? Or do I just find friends here that want it or places to donate what is donate-able? On the other hand, I have fallen in love again with a lot of these products in using them while I’m back, or remembering that I had them and why I got them in the first place.
I guess I’m just wondering if anyone else has faced similar situations and what they decided. Any support, advice, thoughts on the matter are welcome! I can also give more specifics on what I have in my dorm and what is still left here if people think that’s necessary, but I will say that the amount at my dorm is a decent sized collection. I’m the go-to room for before going out and Halloween/costume parties. So it’s not like I’m without makeup without the items here.

I already struggle with anxiety and have had traumatic things happen to me over my life time. I mainly grew up in the church on my dad’s side. He served a mission in South Africa and met my mom there and brought her to Canada and then were divorced shortly after having me. My dad went inactive for most of my childhood due to his trauma from his mission in South Africa during the 90s when the apartheid was ending and lots of violence raved the streets of Johannesburg where he spent most of his time. I still grew up being taught the beliefs by my grandma and attending church with her when she had me. My dad has been now active again for the past 7 years or so.
I also have not been 100% active my whole life. (I’m a 21 year old, female).
I’ve just gotten married civilly outside of the temple and am thinking of going through with my endowments and temple sealing to my husband. He’s been on a mission before and done his. I have a lot of anxiety and of course the unknowns of the temple make it worse. A lot of my anxiety also becomes worse learning about lots of the rituals that were previously practiced. Like I was worried I was going to have to be naked or partially naked for my endowments, before my husband clarified. It really is frustrating when my husband laughs when I brought this up, reasonably being worried I would have to be naked. I guess he didn’t realize this was previously practiced and a valid concern of mine once I researched this.
I just feel really sick to my stomach about it and am worried I’m going to end up with trauma afterwards because the rituals will be too much. What can I do to prevent having a traumatic experience? Should I just go by myself for my endowment? I also don’t have a mom to escort me. It would be a family friend or something.
It all just is making me feel sick to my stomach the more I’m trying to formally research and learn about it and prepare myself for it.

Bit of background: My gf and I met over a dating app in Feb 2022. Since then, we've had a loving and supportive relationship, but as time has gone on, I've become more uncomfortable with how dependent she's become. In previous relationships she's had, they haven't lasted more than a few months and they've usually ended up with her being abused in one way or another (these stories have been corroborated by her friends. Knowing this, I made it my mission to build her up, as she had very low self confidence and kept putting herself down in the relationship and in other aspects of her life.) When we first got together, I was in the middle of saving money to try and move into my own place (I was in the middle of a job change during the pandemic and had to move home since the place I was due to start cancelled my contract before furlough was announced. I found myself in debt and have slowly got to a position where I can move out of my parent's place. She was a live in Au Pair, just having moved out from her mother's house in France (she was born in the UK).) As time has gone on, though, I've started to get worried. The first thing was her attitude to saving. She plays very fast and very loose with finances. She doesn't understand that I'm still trying to claw my way out of debt and have extra bills to pay. The first debate we had was about getting lifts from me. She doesn't drive, so she would expect me to take her places. When I started asking for petrol contributions, she protested. After her friends convinced her that it was actually a fair request, she agreed to it, but I noticed that if I forgot to ask for it immediately or say I was making a note of it, we'd have arguments about whether she actually owed it or not, as she thought she'd be getting it for free. She would also need to spend money that we needed to save for our flat by insisting we spend new years in the city that was near us, rather than going out locally for a fraction of the cost. Usually, I would have to front these events as well, and the new years in question ended up costing me a lot due to a dispute with booking accommodation. I noticed, she didn't get burned with her lack of organisation, I kept getting burned. Fast forward to early May 2023, we've now moved into our flat, and I've been treating this as the start of our lives together, only, I've started to notice things that are worrying me. For a long time now, she has been complaining about her job as a chef, saying she can't do it for the next 20-30 years of her life, which I agree with. I started suggesting education to her, which she initially was curious about, but since then she's gone off the idea. Every Uni course she looked at, she would find a single module she didn't like the look of and would write off the entire degree. She would also say that she doesn't want to commit to 3-4 years of studying as she might change her mind about what she wants to do part way through. I didn't say much to that, except that other people also go through that and that it's not a huge problem, grit your teeth and finish the degree then get a job doing something else. I originally trained as a teacher and switched to programming during the pandemic, so I understand the worry she has. I then suggested some form of in work training (like an apprenticeship, but she's not keen on that idea either, as she, again, waste a load of time on something she doesn't want to do in the future. It was at this point I started losing interest and just said that the type of career she says she wants requires training, so she either commits to the training and gets what she wants, or she keeps doing what she's doing now. She didn't seem to like that answer.) Then the catalyst for all of this happened a few days ago. She was nervous and wanted to talk to me about what she wants to do in the future. I stopped what I was doing and gave her my full attention, being sure to try and keep my face as even as possible. She wants to go into business working with Cakes, Tattoos and crafts. Not one of them, all three at the same time. She's waiting for the earning from my job to increase so she can quit her job to focus on this. Due to the fact she kept talking about it, I must have had a good poker face, as I was very upset on the inside. She wants the ability to run all three businesses by herself and to switch between them when she wants so she doesn't get bored with one thing. I haven't spoken to her about it yet, since I think it's unrealistic and I get the feeling that this is just a way that she can become a stay at home partner who doesn't need to work. I always though to run a successful business that you need to throw yourself into it heart and soul, with most people starting it whilst they still have a full time job, not to mention that all 3 of the business fields she's chosen are extremely competitive. I know when I bring this up with her, that it's going to upset her and appear unsupportive, but I've felt put upon by her in one way or another for a while. AITA for not wanting to support a partner whose ideas, frankly, have very little change of working?
