2023.06.09 21:09 devious_panda Review Build Proposal: Stupid or Inefficient?

I got a weird quirky project on my mind as it concerns a recent failure of a rack server and wanted to redesign for a smaller footprint and power requirements. Please help tell me if this is wrong, a waste of money, or just overkill.
Story Time: If you care, otherwise ignore...
I've had a pair of 1U Supermicro Xeon ITX units which were used for a variety of tasks, typical plex/media stack, docker containers, home automation. The typical homelab setup. They sip power for the most part and have decent specs but are 2-5 years old and due for a refresh. I added a Quadro P2200 to crush any transcoding requirements for my many plex friends/family. I loved their IPMI interface for easy remote management and the hardware was rock solid in terms of stability and uptime. Luckily, I already have a dedicated NAS which runs on typical HDDs with 160TB of raw storage so I'm covered there. The problem is I want to see if I can combine my current Plex box and LanCache and move it to a NUC. I wanted everything stupid fast and wanted the goal of being able to saturate my 1GB network now, 2.5GB soon, and then 10G in the next 5 years.
The Pitch: I want to use an old 10" network rack to be the new "brains" and speed of my computing power. I want to take the new NUC 13 pro units (i7, 16 cores) to run the containers and virtual machines. I want this server to be backed by an all flash array to fully saturate my network for data transfers. The obvious problem with that is the NUC only supports a max of 3 internal drives. It does however have a pair of thunderbolt 4 ports. The plan is to purchase an external OWC M2 enclosure for thunderbolt flash storage. I want to see if UNRAID can be the solution here without breaking things as I've already read the reports of issues with SSD Trim/all flash build. I know this can easily fully saturate a single 2.5GB NIC so by adding the daughter board to bond gets me to 5GB and I figured worst case, I try a thunderbolt 4 -> 10GB adapter if I can find a solid supported product. The NUC + External drive bay take up a miniscule footprint and should be like 4"x4"x6" when everything is said and done.
Here would be the storage layout:
Price Estimate: (there's some crazy deals on SSDs!)
I think that price isn't crazy for the total speed that I would be getting from this box while consuming ~60-100W of power with minimal heat/noise.
I don't know if I want to go down the road of ZFS via plugin or if I need to consider another solution like TrueNAS scale or Xpenology to squeeze out additional performance to use a traditional RAID. The idea on paper was to create a 4TB RAID 0 for max speed and then raid 1 that array against the single 4TB slower sata SSD for parity. None of the data here is that precious and my traditional NAS covers the 3-2-1 data security best practises. This would just be used for crazy fast temp storage, plex playback via Intel Quicksync graphics, Lancache to help augment my crappy ISP speeds (no gigabit), and high performance VMs/Containers.
Pick it apart please.

2023.06.09 18:43 seabass4507 Mac Error Code -50 when transferring individual files from one pool to another on QNAP TS-h973AX

I have a TS-h973AX with two storage pools on it. Storage pool A is all SSD, used for everyday work, storage pool B is all HDD used for archival purposes and temp backups. Working on a Mac Studio with Ventura 13.3.1 installed.
When I want to archive some individual items from pool A to pool B, I am consistently getting this error from the MacOS...
'The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).'
It stops the copy, and leaves greyed out files. When I try to delete the files I get the following error.
'The operation can’t be completed because the item “Filename.mov” is in use.'
I having a hard time troubleshooting this. I've updated firmware, rebooted both the Mac and NAS. Nothing is helping. I'm about to do a basic system reset, but I figured Id check in here while I back everything up.
A few things to note.
I don't have the issue when I copy from my desktop to Pool B.
If I contain the files in a folder, then copy the folder from Pool A to Pool B, there's no issue.
I get the same error whether I copy from A to B or B to A.
I starting having issues like this a few months back after I changed some settings for security against the ransomware attacks. They were not as consistent as they are now, so I just kind of worked around it.

2023.06.09 18:02 dfctr O11D with two AIOs new build Fan/AIO placement question

I just built a new system and have some question about AIO Placing. This are the photos of my first "real" build from scratch.
https://imgur.com/a/FoEKEjE
I janked this parts:
Currently I set up the fans and AIO like this:
GPU Temps do not exceed 60°C, CPU, depending on the test, can go up to 100°C(in Prime95) but in gaming it stays below 60-65°C°C.
I've been reading to put the CPU AIO in the side, but thet would need me to put the GPU on the top. Do you happen to have any suggestions?

2023.06.09 16:28 Webhead24-7 So many emotions...

Probably going to ramble a bit...
I just took my first 5mg. Thigh still. I think the injection was faster. Maybe since there is more to inject and they don't want it to take longer? Idk. It hurts, but not bad. I used ice this time. Just 20 seconds. Shouldn't harm anything. Certainly not making my skin colder than the fridge lol. I think it worked. I didn't feel any pain until AFTER the second click. Which is good because my main concern with the pain is that I'd flinch or something and spill some. So I'll take pain after. Last for about 3 seconds. Kinda stinging. I've tried cold and room temp. No difference. Usually takes me 10 to 20 minutes to do it. But whatever. I'll deal I guess.
I kinda have been feeling shame lately. Like I'm cheating. I have only told 3 people. My wife, best friend, and then a coworker. I told the coworker partly to help monitor for effects, but also because he takes Ozempic. He takes it for diabetes, but still, he gets it. And he's my best work friend, so it's not like he's random lol.
But yeah, like, it's so dumb. I shouldn't care if people judge. That "why don't you just eat right and work out?" BS. I KNOW it's dumb. But the thought still lingers in my brain...
This last week of 2.5mg was rough. I ate more this week than the last 3. Glad to be going to 5mg. I will probably wait as long as I can and see if that happens again. If it does, I'll go to 7.5mg. If it DOESN'T happen, I'll probably stay at 5mg. 2 pounds a week is my goal. No need to move up if I'm hitting that.
Um, technical stuff... Using Push to get the Rx. PCP will only prescribe it once I'm at maintenance. No Prior Auth needed. Insurance is paying for the whole thing, so certainly VERY lucky there. Going to submit the Push visits to see if any of that will be covered. Unsure if I can use my HSA to cover what's left I should be able to. I'll need to double check though.
Started the year at 240lbs. Started Mounjaro at 225lbs. Lost 10 pounds on 2.5mg. Hoping for at least another 10 pounds this month on the 5mg.
Yeah idk. Sorry for the rant. Lot of thoughts. No where to really express them.

2023.06.09 11:35 Effective_Matter_437 Why did I uninstall Linux?

Linux is very good, it's stable, fluid and open source, I had it to protect my data.
I'm going to have to pay for this because it will improve the service, but you should know that as soon as these problems are sorted out I'll be switching back to Linux.
Problem
1 year ago I had my asus vivobook pc which I still have. It was running Windows 10 and I switched to Ubuntu by completely removing Windows when installing Ubuntu.
At first everything worked fine.
The first month I made the mistake of testing different open source software like freetube and putting the videos from my phone on the PC.
In fact, a month later my storage was full, even after overwriting the content with bleachbit. I can't remember if the computer wouldn't turn on or if the screen would freeze at the ubuntu home page, but I'm sure it was one of the two because I remember asking a computer specialist to put Windows back on.
I'm sure it's one of the two because I remember asking an IT guy to put windows back.
During ubuntu I had other problems.
I wanted to install proton vpn, via the store, but it wasn't the official version (one day someone will install this crap, it's better not to have anything).
So I went to the proton site but I didn't have enough technical knowledge. I'm interested in open source tools but not to the point of spending hours configuring them, user profiles aren't all one thing or all the other, there are lots of intermediate levels.
It's been a tough road.
After 3 hours I gave up.
Similarly, I have windscribe and cloud filen because for tax purposes I can't appear anywhere but I don't know if they're in the store.
For the storage problem I think it was the equivalent of the temp file on windows, but I don't know.
I'd really like to reinstall ubuntu but there have to be more applications available but not whatsapp and all the rest, the software that the community use.
There also needs to be more help for intermediate users than just the terminal, and someone to guide them when there's a major problem. I can't take money out of the computer specialist's pocket every time.
Thank you for solving these problems

2023.06.09 03:33 Routine-Brush6935 Canned foods

What is the temperature range to keep canned goods from spoiling. I ask because I live in a hot climate place like Las Vegas, but am on a budget so I turn the air off during times I am not home to save money.the temps in my place can get in the 90s. I love in a 2nd floor condo and the heat rises from the condo from below. Is that bad for long term canned food storage or can the good survive temp fluctuation?

2023.06.08 21:07 axcho Anyone want a bunch of cheap, bulk coconut cream? (20kg containers)

Hey, I'm on a mailing list for small food businesses in the Bay Area and someone just posted saying they bought too much coconut cream which expires in August and were looking to sell it off at a loss:
My company has 800 lbs. of shelf-stable coconut cream to offload, with a short shelf life -- best by date is 8/17/23. Let me know if you or any company in your network may be interested.
We paid $0.80/lb, happy to sell for $0.40/lb OBO and to split what we have.
FOB Petaluma, CA, but we may be able to arrange East Bay transport.
Product:
Aseptic coconut cream, no stabilizers
18 cartons of 20 kgs each, potentially a couple more
Shelf-stable product, room temp storage
Importer: iTi Tropicals
Manufacturer: Kara
Origin: Indonesia
Spec sheet attached. Complete documentation available.
I'd hate to see it go to waste, but I definitely wouldn't be able to use more than one of those 20kg (44lb) containers myself, and I'd probably have to freeze it after opening so it doesn't go bad over the next couple months... (Got any good recipes for coconut cream ice cream?)
Any ideas for what to do with it? At $0.40/lb each 20kg container would be about $17.60 plus shipping (shipping is the tricky part, obviously).
Maybe if we get enough people who want to make Super Fuel or Keto Fuel (or Basically Food BALANCE or BURN) with coconut cream (my favorite recipe), we could find an efficient way to use this up! :D
Please reply if you're interested or have any ideas or questions. :d Thank you!

2023.06.08 18:08 jipax13855 Appreciable difference between basement temp storage and fridge temp storage for dry vials?

I'm in a weird storage situation since we are preparing to move and my very neurodivergent (autistic, possible ADHD) partner is starting to pack up, so anything in the vicinity of the main floors is liable to get swept up and packed without a thought from him, even if he's reminded. Cleaning is one way he stims.
But I couldn't resist a bulk deal on some of the underdosed vials. They have since gone OOS, sorry for everyone who was about to DM me.
I was wondering if it would decrease their shelf life significantly if I store them in the basement, which is cooler than the rest of the house and where I have a corner of items he knows to leave me to pack myself, rather than in the fridge that he has access to. He's just the type to absentmindedly toss stuff, no malice intended but controlling those anxiety fueled impulses is a struggle for him. Would fridge temps add months to the shelf life enough that I should find a creative storage route that won't look "tossable"?
FWIW I've already had the vials in the basement for most of a day. If putting them in the fridge now won't add to their shelf life, I won't bother.

2023.06.08 15:39 Cikkk [mem card] running a program off of it

Hello fellow machinists. I’m in a slight pickle. We have recently received work that’s going to have extensive run time and would require a temp fix until we decide to upgrade our memory storage at the machine.
I’m able to call to the memory card using M198 and run the program. My only dilemma is not being able to use the edit function and skim through or make minor changes at the control.
Is there a way (hopefully) to essentially make the mem card like an external hd where I could make the program the main? There is a dnc feature to make the program that, but there is no dnc button on the control. Assuming that dnc button would act like memory. This is a fanuc 31i controller on a takisawa ts4000ys lathe.
Thank you in advance!

2023.06.08 11:59 accumaxlabs Choose the Best Lab Storage for Your Applications

Are you using a variety of lab bottles? It’s effortless to grab the bottle from the shelf without giving it a second thought. But, a lab bottle is not just a bottle.
Are you certain that you have selected the most suitable type of container for your intended purpose? Bottles provide versatile options that can be utilized for the handling, transformation, and storage of both liquids and solids. Available in a variety of sizes and shapes, they can be constructed from either plastic or glass materials.

Selection goes beyond deciding glass versus plastic lab bottles

You’ve decided on using plastic lab bottles over glass but that’s not the end of your decision.
Selecting the appropriate bottle involves more than just choosing its size, shape, and color. It’s also crucial to consider the type of plastic material that will be used, as the performance of the bottle can be impacted by factors such as temperature and chemical exposure.

Variables to consider when choosing lab bottles

In the interest of saving time, it can be tempting to simply grab the nearest bottle on the shelf. However, before making a selection, it’s crucial to ask yourself several important questions regarding your lab bottles.
  1. What chemicals will the bottles come in contact with?
  2. What shape of bottle suits your application?
  3. Do you need bottles to withstand extreme temperatures and resistance or do you need bottles for low temperature long term storage?
  4. What kind of Transparency and Translucency should your bottle have?
  5. Do you need bottles that take care of your light sensitive samples?

Temperature considerations

Will you be exposing your bottles to a hot or cold environment? Temperatures can also affect your bottles. Bottles may need to withstand extreme temperatures such as autoclaving for sterilization as well as freezing temperatures for long-term storage. Take a look to how different bottle materials withstand a wide temperature range:

Chemical compatibility for plastic lab bottles

Selecting an appropriate bottle could potentially create a safety hazard. Place the wrong chemical in the wrong type of bottle material, and the chemical could eat right through the material. Preventing chemicals from spilling onto the floor, or even worse, onto your lap, is essential.
Utilize this convenient chart to assist you in identifying the suitable material for the bottle required for your application.

Plastic Materials Overview:

Amber versus Transparent
In certain procedures, it is crucial to determine whether to utilize a transparent or amber media bottle. Amber bottles are necessary to safeguard light-sensitive substances from natural, infrared, or ultraviolet light, which can cause their degradation. Solutions like organic solvents should be stored in amber glass. Transparent media bottles are a popular choice for storing non-volatile chemical compounds that are not sensitive to light.
Square versus Round Bottles
When it comes to autoclaving processes, square media bottles are frequently utilized due to their ability to be densely packed into autoclaves for maximum space utilization and efficiency. Micro labs, which must process samples quickly as various steps in the process are time-sensitive, often need to produce substantial quantities of media and agar on a regular basis; they find that racks of square bottles are much more manageable and practical for this purpose.
Square media bottles are also commonly used to store solid chemicals in their granular form. In analytical laboratories, round media bottles are more commonly used. The reason behind using a rounded container instead of a square one is that it facilitates the mixing and stirring of solutions. In these laboratories it is important to ensure solutions are effectively mixed to form homogeneous solutions.
Wide Mouth versus Narrow Mouth
Certain laboratory procedures can be simplified by utilizing a wide-mouth bottle as opposed to a narrow-mouth one. If it is a medium bottle that contains granular solids, it is easier to scoop the chemical out for weighing when the mouth is wide. A narrow mouth bottle can be useful when pipetting solutions into a media bottle. The bottle’s shoulders are designed with a steeper slope to facilitate the effective mixing of any added chemicals with the solution inside the container.

CONCLUSION

Accumax Media bottles and Reagent bottles are manufactured in 100K clean room facility from premium grade material with low leachable and extractable materials.

Motherboard: ROG Strix Z790-E Gaming Wifi CPU: Intel i9-13900k RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB, 32gb DDR5 6600MHz Storage: Samsung 980 PRO, PCIe 4.0 NVMe, M.2 SSD OS: Windows 11
My friend who lives across the country has been unable to use his PC for weeks. Nobody seems to be able to help. It's a brand new build.
The PC crashes after a few minutes just sitting on the desktop with Asus AI Suite 3 running.
Before the crash, the stats show as: CPU: 5500mhz Dram: 4800mhz
CPU core: 1.35v Memory: 1.1v L2: 1.2v CPU System Agent: 0.785v CPU Input: 1.79v
CPU Temp: 43C Package: 60C Motherboard: 26C VRM: 35C Chipset: 43C
CPU Fan: 2272 rpm All other fans say 0 rpm.
Immediately after the crash, things are mostly the same except:
CPU: 5000mhz CPU core: 0.844v CPU L2: 0v CPU temp: 31C CPU package: 30C
The temperatures seem fine, so its not an overheating issue, but the voltages drop only moments before the crash.
Could he have some app or bios setting that is automatically causing the CPU to go into some kind of low power mode and the voltage is set too low, causing it to crash?
The only other thing I can think of is maybe his ram's speed is set too low, or maybe the timing on it is wrong but that stuff is all set to auto in his bios.

2023.06.07 23:24 NipsAhoy2 Databricks Merge into

Tech stack: Azure data lake gen 2 storage ; Azure data factory ; Databricks premium ; Medallion Architecture ;
To preface: my organization has 20 different source systems across 15 different servers. Each server has a SQL DB with like data. That data is extracted from the source sql db and stored in bronze layer as parquet files.
I then have 1 silver databricks transformation notebook that the source system name is passed through from an ADF parameter to filter the source and target data.
At the end of the procedure, I complete a merge into (update and insert) into a delta table that is partitioned by source system.
In the merge into routine I am filtering the source AND target by the source system parameter.
I have 1 pipeline that is triggered by the source system name (20 different triggers that all start at the same time, but with a different source system parameter).
Even though my delta table is partitioned by source system and my notebook is being passed a source system, I still receive an error: files were added to partition source system = x , by a concurrent update.

my question

Is there any way around this without creating a silver.deltatable_sourcesystem?
This is my redacted merge into code:
p_sourceSystemName = 'SourceSystem1'
deltaTable = f"delta.abfss://pathtotable/Silver_mytable"
-Get the list of column names for the source table source_cols = spark.table("test").columns
-Create a temporary table with distinct records from the source table spark.table("test").select(source_cols).distinct().createOrReplaceTempView("temp_source")
-Update existing records sql_update = f"""MERGE INTO {deltaTable} AS target USING ( SELECT * FROM temp_source S WHERE S.SourceSystem = '{p_sourceSystemName}' ) AS source
ON target.CoIDPatNo = source.CoIDPatNo AND target.HashValue != source.HashValue AND target.currentIndicator = 'Y' AND target.SourceSystem = '{p_sourceSystemName}'
WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET currentIndicator = 'N', ValidToTs = current_timestamp, actionType = 'Update' """ - insert new records sql_insert = f"""MERGE INTO {deltaTable} AS target USING ( SELECT * FROM temp_source S WHERE S.SourceSystem = '{p_sourceSystemName}' ) AS source ON target.CoIDPatNo = source.CoIDPatNo AND target.HashValue = source.HashValue AND target.currentIndicator = 'Y' AND target.SourceSystem = '{p_sourceSystemName}'
WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN INSERT ({", ".join(source_cols)}) -- dynamically construct the column list VALUES ({", ".join(["source." + col for col in source_cols])}); -- dynamically construct the value list """

2023.06.07 23:06 Graybeard_Bellator Screen resolution problems

Hello,
I'm returning to Linux Mint after a few years away (2015). I've installed LM21.1 Cinnamon on my "medium grade" four year old gaming PC.
The only thing that didn't work "out of the box" was the display resolution The only screen resolution I have access to is 1024x768 with an unknown monitor.
If anyone can shed some insight about enabling my monitor's native resolution of 1920x1080 I'd appreciate it. I'd also like to learn how to make better graphics performance available in Steam... but I'll tackle one problem at a time (with your help, which is greatly appreciated).
I did some preliminary searching and found that people were asking for an xrandr report so I did that:
"[email protected]:~$ xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
default connected primary 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm"
Here is some GPU and montior information: My monitor is a Dell P2717H, 27" with 1920x1080 native resolution.
My GPU is EVGA GTX GeForce 960 (4GB)
I've installed the nVidia X Server Settings, nVidia Prime and nVidia Screen Resolution Extra. Thanks for any help you can provide.
CJ
