2023.06.09 20:28 InternetTraumatized Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Alexandria (June 9)

(from oca.org)
Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Alexandria, a distinguished champion of Orthodoxy and a great teacher of the Church, came from an illustrious and pious Christian family. He studied the secular sciences, including philosophy, but most of all he strove to acquire knowledge of the Holy Scriptures and the truths of the Christian Faith. In his youth Cyril entered the monastery of Macarius in the Nitreia hills, where he stayed for six years. Theophilus (385-412), the Patriarch of Alexandria, ordained him as a deacon, numbered him among the clergy and entrusted him to preach.
Upon the death of Patriarch Theophilus, Cyril was unanimously chosen to the patriarchal throne of the Alexandrian Church. He led the struggle against the spread of the Novatian heresy in Alexandria, which taught that any Christian who had fallen away from the Church during a time of persecution, could not be received back into it.
Cyril, seeing the futility of admonishing the heretics, sought their expulsion from Alexandria. The Jews appeared a greater danger for the Church, repeatedly causing riots, accompanied by the brutal killing of Christians. The saint long contended with them. In order to wipe out the remnants of paganism, the saint cast out devils from an ancient pagan temple and built a church on the spot, and the relics of the Holy Unmercenaries Cyrus and John were transferred into it. A more difficult struggle awaited the saint with the emergence of the Nestorian heresy.
Nestorius, a presbyter of the Antiochian Church, was chosen in 428 to the see of Constantinople and there he was able to spread his heretical teaching against the dogma about the uncommingled union of two natures in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Nestorius called the Mother of God not the Theotokos, but rather Christotokos or “Birth-giver of Christ,” implying that she gave birth not to God, but only to the man Christ. The holy Patriarch Cyril repeatedly wrote to Nestorius and pointed out his error, but Nestorius continued to persevere in it. Then the saint sent out epistles against Nestorianism to the clergy of Constantinople and to the holy emperor Theodosius the Younger (408-450), denouncing the heresy. Cyril wrote also to other Churches, to Pope Celestine and to the other Patriarchs, and even to monks of several monasteries, warning of the emergence of a dangerous heresy.
Nestorius started an open persecution against the Orthodox. In his presence one of his partisans, Bishop Dorotheus, pronounced an anathema against anyone who would call the Most Holy Virgin Mary the Theotokos.
Nestorius hated Cyril and brought out against him every kind of slander and fabrication, calling him a heretic. The saint continued to defend Orthodoxy with all his powers. The situation became so aggravated, that it became necessary to call an Ecumenical Council, which convened in the city of Ephesus in the year 431. At the Council 200 bishops arrived from all the Christian Churches. Nestorius, awaiting the arrival of Bishop John of Antioch and other Syrian bishops, did not agree to the opening of the Council. But the Fathers of the Council began the sessions with Cyril presiding. Having examined the teaching of Nestorius, the Council condemned him as a heretic. Nestorius did not submit to the Council, and Bishop John opened a “robber council”, which decreed Cyril a heretic. The unrest increased. By order of the emperor, Patriarch Cyril of Alexandria and Archbishop Memnon of Ephesus were locked in prison, and Nestorius was deposed.
Soon Saints Cyril and Memnon were freed, and the sessions of the Council continued. Nestorius, not submitting himself to the determinations of the Council, was deprived of priestly rank. By order of the emperor he was sent to the faraway place Sasim in the Libyan wilderness, where he died in grievous torments. His tongue, having blasphemed the Mother of God, was overtaken by punishment—in it there developed worms. Even Bishop John of Antioch and the remaining Syrian bishops signed the decrees of the Council of Ephesus.
Cyril guided the Alexandrian Church for 32 years, and towards the end of his life the flock was cleansed of heretics. Gently and cautiously Cyril approached anyone, who by their own simpleness and lack of knowledge, fell into false wisdom. There was a certain Elder, an ascetic of profound life, who incorrectly considered the Old Testament Priest Melchizedek to be the Son of God. Cyril prayed for the Lord to reveal to the Elder the correct way to view the righteous one. After three days the Elder came to Cyril and said that the Lord had revealed to him that Melchizedek was a mere man.
Cyril learned to overcome his prejudice against the memory of the great John Chrysostom (November 13). Theophilus, the Patriarch of Alexandria, and uncle of Cyril, was an antagonist of John, and presided in a council in judgment of him. Cyril thus found himself in a circle antagonistic to John Chrysostom, and involuntarily acquired a prejudice against him. Isidore of Pelusium (February 4) repeatedly wrote to Cyril and urged him to include the name of the great Father of the Church into the diptychs of the saints, but Cyril would not agree.
Once in a dream he saw a wondrous temple, in which the Mother of God was surrounded by a host of angels and saints, in whose number was John Chrysostom. When Cyril wanted to approach the All-Holy Lady and venerate her, John Chrysostom would not let him. The Theotokos asked John to forgive Cyril for having sinned against him through ignorance. Seeing that John hesitated, the Mother of God said, “Forgive him for my sake, since he has labored much for my honor, and has glorified me among the people calling me Theotokos.” John answered, “By your intercession, Lady, I do forgive him,” and then he embraced Cyril with love.
Cyril repented that he had maintained anger against the great saint of God. Having convened all the Egyptian bishops, he celebrated a solemn feast in honor of John Chrysostom.
Cyril died in the year 444, leaving behind many works. In particular, the following ought to be mentioned: commentaries On the Gospel of Luke, On the Gospel of John, On the Epistles of the Apostle Paul to the Corinthians and to the Hebrews; also an Apologia in Defense of Christianity against the Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363). Of vast significance are his Five Books against Nestorius; a work on the Most Holy Trinity under the title Thesaurus, written against Arius and Eunomios. Also two dogmatic compositions on the Most Holy Trinity, distinguished by a precise exposition of the Orthodox teaching on the Procession of the Holy Spirit. Cyril wrote Against Anthropomorphism for several Egyptians, who through ignorance depicted God in human form. Among Cyril’s works are also the Discussions, among which is the moving and edifying Discourse on the Exodus of the Soul, inserted in the Slavonic “Following Psalter”.
Today we commemorate the repose of this great Father of the Church. He is also remembered on January 18, the date of his flight from Alexandria.
Troparion — Tone 1
With all reverence let us praise a light of the world, the great orator and champion of the Mother of God. For by his fiery teachings he burned up the heresy of Nestorius; therefore, let us cry out to him: “Divine Cyril, intercede with Christ to strengthen the Orthodox Faith.”
Kontakion — Tone 6
You have openly poured out upon us the depth of the teachings of theology, drawing from the well-springs of the Savior; you drowned heresies and saved your flock unharmed from triple waves. Blessed and venerable Cyril, you are shown to be a guide for all lands, revealing things divine

2023.06.09 19:44 thunderbolt1000 "Your employee discount or your manager, NOW!"

Was checking out a Guest this morning and all was calm, she was very friendly in the beginning, I asked about Circle, made a little chit-chat about the new LED lights in Bullseye's Playground, until I total the transaction. Roughly $225.
Karen: "Ooh that's a lot. Do you have any coupons or offers?"
Me: "(polite fake laugh) I wish! It can add up quick but I don't think these items had any offers. Do you know about the RedC--?" (cuts me off mid-sentence) (immediately turns aggressive)
K: "Oh no I don't need your stupid card. Give me your employee discount."
Me: (still thinking she's just yanking my chain) "Ah, you don't want that, it's not even that much! Haha."
K: "Look, I'm not in the mood for this shit today, I know you guys can do it. So you either put in your discount or get me a manager."
Me: (kinda stared at her like 'is this really happening right now?')
K: "NOW!"
Me: "Hey, SETL, can I get you on Lane 19 for Guest assistance?"
When the SETL got up here, she demanded either her discount or mine but she was "not about to pay full price for Chinese-made crap" (then why are you even buying it? lol) and the TL told her we don't offer our Team Member discount to anyone and if she was unhappy with the items and not interested in the RedCard as the only other way to save on her purchase today, that was it as far as options.
The Karen actually paid lol and walked out in a hissy-fit and this afternoon we got a 1/10 NPS survey, of course, with every metric 1. 😂

2023.06.09 19:15 nils_olav_III What was in that gummy? Re-written by ChatGPT in the style of a Terrence McKenna trip report

Prompt used: Rewrite the following text in Terrence McKenna trip report style Source trip report: https://www.reddit.com/tripreports/comments/10ul2eg/what_was_in_that_gummy_a_cannabis_oil_trip_report/
Trip Report: A Journey through the Veil of Perception
Preface: Let it be known that I embark upon this report with full acknowledgment of my underlying issue of anxiety. My chest pain, experienced during this profound journey and lingering beyond the peak, was undeniably real. The panic that ensued was a response to the physical discomfort rather than the cause. Please bear this in mind as I recount the extraordinary events that transpired.
+14:00: As the clock struck 2:00 PM Eastern Time, a peculiar day unfolded before me. My wife, in an act of legality and love, procured a set of gummies from a reputable establishment in the United States. The label bore the words "Infused Gummies" with a promising 50mg per serving, while the primary ingredient remained shrouded in mystery, merely labeled as "Cannabis oil." My online investigation into this product revealed skeptical Reddit posts dismissing its legitimacy. Nonetheless, I brushed it off, assuming it was a CBD-infused treat, a substance I regularly consume without adverse effects. To provide some context, I am a 30-year-old weighing 135 lbs. I once dabbled in smoking marijuana but ceased due to its tendency to induce panic attacks, often accompanied by chest discomfort and pain. I now rely on Prozac 20mg to quell my anxiety, supplemented by a nightly off-label dosage of 25mg Hydroxyzine for sleep.
+14:10: Ingesting the gummy, I initially believed it to be a calming CBD variant. Engrossed in the world of Valorant, I playfully proclaimed my altered state to fellow players over the microphone, exclaiming, "Marijuanaaaaa.... dudes." Surprisingly, my performance seemed enhanced, surpassing my usual abilities. Delving deeper into the experience, I sipped a cup of black coffee, unaware of the potential for heightened anxiety in the near future.
+14:15: In an abrupt twist, the familiar chest pain associated with marijuana engulfed me. It became apparent that this was no mere CBD-induced relaxation; something more potent coursed through my veins. Instinctively, I called for my wife, desperately seeking solace amidst mounting discomfort. With great difficulty, I implored her to administer 2mg of Diazepam, a prescribed remedy for my airplane anxiety, rumored to hasten the conclusion of psychedelic episodes. As the chest pain intensified, my mind succumbed to panic. I reached out to my mother and eventually dialed 911, my tears cascading as I pleaded for a picture of Jesus from my desk. Convinced of my impending demise, I yearned to seek forgiveness for any unconfessed transgressions, lamenting the challenges faced by my wife, who resides on the autistic spectrum. Already burdened by the loss of her beloved father to ALS, the thought of leaving her bereft filled me with anguish and compelled me to question the cosmic purpose behind such suffering. Through my tears and cries, I beseeched, "Who stands to gain from my demise? What purpose does this serve?"
Times noted beyond this point are approximations, for my perception had begun to warp under the influence.
+14:25: The arrival of the Emergency Medical Technicians (ENTs) brought a temporary respite from my inner turmoil. As they attended to my wife's inquiries, my impatience surged, compelling me to interject, convinced of my ability to provide the answers they sought. In hindsight, I later learned that ENTs typically direct their questions to the sober party, a fact that eluded me in that moment. Despite my belief that I could not walk without succumbing to death, their reassurances and gentle support emboldened me to prove otherwise..
+14:30: Time became an elusive concept as the ambulance stood still, a stationary vessel in the fabric of existence. Vitals were attended to, though my memory blurred the distinction between moments. A vibrant-haired Emergency Medical Technician (ENT) uttered words of intrigue, speaking of the same gummies that had unraveled my consciousness. Was this a genuine expression or a kind attempt to allay my fears? The examination of my vitals revealed a disquieting remark: "That's a little high," one of the ENTs whispered. A brief return to rationality prompted an apology and a desperate plea for mercy. Tears streamed down my face as I poured out my soul, recounting the challenges endured by my wife on the autistic spectrum and the loss of her father to the merciless grip of ALS. In my anguish, I implored the heavens, questioning the purpose behind such torment. Who would gain from inflicting further suffering upon a kind, gentle soul already burdened by life's struggles?
It was in this moment that the conviction of my imminent demise overwhelmed me. The chest pain intensified, and a peculiar sensation tingled in my lower abdomen, convincing me of organ failure. "I am on the precipice of crossing over," I declared to the ENTs. "No one dies within the confines of an ambulance." But suddenly, the torment subsided, swept away by a surge of relief. With closed eyes, I beheld an orange light followed by the brightest, most encompassing white light. "I have traversed to the other side... I have arrived!" I exclaimed to the bewildered paramedics. I found myself in the presence of God, enveloped by the comforting embrace of divine radiance. The ethereal light formed a half-circle, with our world represented by a slender orange line and the fiery depths of hell occupying the other half. Within this heavenly realm, I basked in warmth, bathed in love, and received the answer I sought from the divine.
+14:45: During this stage, the veil of coherence began to fray. I recall directing some harsh words towards the ENTs, probing their beliefs and urging them to seek redemption. When I questioned their faith, the red-haired paramedic revealed himself to be an atheist. Unfazed, I declared that I had encountered his long-lost dog from his Tennessee days, now by my side in the celestial realms. Overwhelmed by emotion, I wept uncontrollably, for the silence that followed spoke volumes. In my mind, it confirmed the authenticity of my otherworldly connection. "Your dog waits for you in this sacred realm, do you not comprehend?" After a prolonged pause, the paramedic finally responded, "I never had a dog." Did he speak the truth, or did his atheistic worldview deny the profound truth I had unveiled, refusing to acknowledge that I had accurately revealed the dog's name and place of residence? I also sensed the presence of Mother Teresa, emanating warmth, love, and deep understanding. A desire to explore her life and teachings stirred within me, eager to delve into her wisdom once this extraordinary experience concluded.
Yet, paranoia began to take hold, exacerbated by the remnants of past marijuana-induced anxiety. Doubts crept in, whispering malevolence in the shadows. A nagging suspicion emerged that this ambulance and its occupants were not what they seemed. Every word uttered by the ENTs appeared tinged with sarcasm, as if they mocked and derided me. Reluctant to share personal details, I refused to provide my phone number, questioning the necessity in the face of impending demise. When asked for my social security number, I hesitated, demanding an explanation. "Why do you require such information if I am destined for death
+14:50: The realms of transcendence once again beckoned, and I ascended to the heavenly abode to administer my judgment upon those who had shown me cruelty and malice. "The fire approaches! Your world shall meet its end in seven days," I warned them with conviction. Their response, though, reminded me of our shared fate. "But you too reside in this realm, therefore you shall be part of that impending doom," they retorted. Undeterred, I refuted their claim, directing their attention to the earthly vessel below, pointing out, "This man, encased in flesh down there, is but a fragment of the earth, forever bound to your world. Look at that visage! Handsome, isn't he? Yet he is not the essence that resides where I am, bathed in the luminous radiance."
In a whimsical turn, I offered to descend from the heavens, mocking their requests for communication. "Oh, so you desire my presence amongst you? Let me descend the celestial ladder," I playfully gestured with my hands, mimicking the act. "Here I am, back in your midst. What is it that you seek once more? My social security number, perchance?" Their confirmation elicited a pause, during which I began to recite the digits once again. But my delivery took a sharp turn, revealing the depths of my mistrust and suspicion. "It is XX-XXX-F.U.C.K.Y.O.U! Perhaps you crave my bank account details to pilfer my worldly possessions upon my departure? Or my address, so you may torment my wife as retribution for my perceived transgressions?" Regrettably, much of the subsequent dialogue remains obscured in the mists of memory. Nonetheless, they denied harboring such nefarious intentions, vehemently asserting their innocence.
A profound paranoia took hold, feeding upon the fertile soil of insults hurled and perceived grievances. I became convinced that their fury had escalated to the point where they planned to plunge the ambulance, with me ensnared within, into the depths of a watery abyss. The sensations of jolts and a disconcertingly linear trajectory only cemented this dreadful conclusion. The insertion of an intravenous line into my arm became tainted with the belief that it served as a sinister instrument, a tool intended to puncture and end my fragile existence. It was a distorted delusion, crafted by my distressed psyche, yet it enveloped me with a chilling realism and unshakable terror.
+14:50: Then, as I arrived at the hospital, the fabric of reality unraveled into a tapestry of hallucinations. The edifice before me appeared unfamiliar, triggering a sudden revelation. "Ah, it all becomes clear now! This (privately funded ambulance company) incessantly bombards us with entreaties for funding because they clandestinely transport unsuspecting souls to serve as unwilling organ donors or some grotesque enterprise!" The realization struck me with a thunderous force. In the depths of my mind, I conjured an intricate web of conspiracy, intertwining the origins of COVID with the nefarious actions of the United States government. A chilling notion gripped me—those of us vaccinated, myself included, were susceptible to an insidious trigger, ingeniously concealed within a government-manufactured "gummy." I wove a nightmarish narrative where this counterfeit hospital, a den of deception, conspired to exploit individuals like me, destined for organ harvesting or worse. The truth crystallized within me—the United States, a realm of deceit and propaganda, while China, in their assertions, held the keys to veracity.
As I rolled along the hospital corridor, a mantra escaped my lips, reverberating through the sterile air. "China's gonna get y'all! China's gonna get y'all!" I chanted relentlessly, a fervent proclamation of impending reckoning. In my altered state, I believed myself to be the sole patient who had unveiled the facade of this fabricated facility, and my mission was to awaken others to this truth. But their vacant gazes and apathetic demeanor revealed an unsettling indifference to my urgent warnings.
One of the ENTs interjected, uttering enigmatic words that pierced the fabric of my perception. "We got their balloon. Shot it down. It was a spike/spice balloon," they revealed. At the time, unaware of the news and its dissemination, I perceived the ENT as an agent of the clandestine "organ harvesters" or the enigmatic CIA, intricately entwined within the web of the COVID, vaccine, and gummy conspiracy. The details he disclosed about the balloon being downed assumed the guise of top-secret information, irrelevant to my fate as I teetered on the brink of imminent demise.
As I lingered in the hallway, awaiting the solace of a room, my presence caught the attention of a bespectacled individual donning a mask, seated beside a bedridden soul. His gaze fixated upon me, undoubtedly captivated by my perceived insanity, transforming me into a spectacle of amusement. Yet, my distorted psyche translated his scrutiny as a covert examination, reminiscent of a CIA operative. "Ah, another one they've brought in, one who has unraveled the intricate tapestry of deception. Well, his days are numbered, and escape eludes him," I interpreted from the contours of his countenance.
This marked the pinnacle of my transcendent journey, where the boundaries of time blurred into a tapestry of shifting realities. I fervently swore that I had journeyed six decades into the future, emerging from a deep coma. The resonant voice of an aged woman echoed in my ears, tenderly caring for an individual robbed of speech. It dawned upon me that the voice belonged to my beloved wife, weathered by the passage of time. Her speech bore the familiar cadence and nuances, albeit slowed and burdened with fragility. She must have been in her eighties. How I longed to communicate, to convey that I could hear her, but the words eluded me. My aged wife gently spoke, "My middle daughter and I are closest to him, and we shall advocate for his well-being." In that moment, fear metamorphosed into unbridled elation! Daughters, I have daughters? Three radiant souls bearing my legacy. How wondrous! Yet, the revelation carried a shadow of estrangement, for only the middle daughter extended her care. In the boundless realm of technological advancements and the complexities of a changing world, the fractures in a father-daughter bond could manifest in unforeseen ways, a mystery shrouded in the mists of uncertainty.
+15:00: The room embraced me as I was gently rolled into its confines, gradually reconnecting with reality, or at least a semblance of it. A glimmer of awareness flickered within me, nudging my conscience to acknowledge the tumultuous barrage of mean-spirited and belligerent words that had escaped my lips. Apologies flowed incessantly towards the red-headed ENT, a genuine attempt to atone for my transgressions. Yet, his reassurance echoed through the air, soothing my troubled mind, urging me to release the weight of remorse. The older, gray-haired ENT graced my presence as well, and my repentant refrain persisted, "Sorry, sorry," reverberating like a mantra.
Left alone in the room, a recurrent visitor caught my attention. Suspicion coursed through my veins as I wove intricate narratives of espionage, unsure whether these clandestine figures were undercover agents for the United States or some inscrutable force aligned with China. However, a sudden realization pierced the veil of confusion—those fools had unwittingly left me with my cell phone! Elation surged within me as I seized the opportunity to capture firsthand footage, an unadulterated glimpse into the clandestine machinations lurking within these hidden corridors. With a short selfie video and a fervent declaration, "This is what's really going on...you won't find this place on any map here in the US! Please find me!" I harnessed the encrypted power of the Signal app, ensuring the transmission remained concealed from prying eyes.
Shortly thereafter, a visitor graced my presence, their identity fading into the recesses of my memory. Yet, their words resonated, "Two people would like to visit you. Your wife, and I believe the other is your mother." As they both entered the room, the illusion crumbled, the veil of delusion torn asunder. No longer ensnared within the clutches of a covert facility, their words flowed with lucidity, tethered to the realm of normalcy and comprehension. Realization dawned upon me—I had consumed a gummy, and the imminent blood work would unveil any potential lacing of additional substances. Paranoia lingered, and I questioned, "Who's that guy who keeps walking by? He's a Chinese spy, isn't he?" Their assurances tempered my fears, dismissing the mysterious figure as a mere visitor or custodian.
+15:15: As the tendrils of reality tightened their grip, I grappled to maintain coherence amidst the sporadic fluctuations of my thoughts. My speech teetered on the edge of autopilot, an involuntary stream of consciousness dictated by the enthralling influence of the drug. Yet, when I summoned my inner strength, channeling the essence of my true self, I declared to my wife and mother, "Look, he's coming back!" Gratitude enveloped my being, for I discovered that I resided a mere three doors away from the sanctuary of the psych ward, a potential refuge should I remain trapped within that altered state indefinitely.
+15:30: A gradual reintegration into the realm of lucidity and reality commenced, as I found myself immersed in profound conversations with my wife and mother. Eagerly, I recounted the awe-inspiring encounter with the resplendent white light, a transcendent phenomenon that reignited the dwindling embers of my belief in a divine presence. In truth, my faith had faltered in the face of relentless violence and the weight of atrocities that plagued our world. However, the veil was lifted, and a newfound certainty enveloped my being—I knew, without a shred of doubt, that the path to basking in the iridescent glow of the white light lies in the simplicity of kindness and goodness bestowed upon one another. Yet, it must be acknowledged that my journey had also acquainted me with the vast expanse of hell, an abyss of comparable magnitude to heaven, reserved for those truly consumed by malevolence.
+16:00: The tethers of reality grew stronger as I treaded the path of sobering clarity. Though almost fully reclaimed by mundane existence, I expressed to the doctors a lingering discomfort in my chest, despite the dwindling influence of intoxication. Eager to investigate further, they conducted several tests, including a blood test that hinted at a potential clot in my chest. However, the subsequent CT scan yielded negative results, offering solace in the assurance of a healthy heart. Nevertheless, one of the doctors advised me to consider reducing my caffeine intake due to a specific heart condition that might have been triggered by the gummy. Yet, resolute in my conviction, I declined to curtail my coffee consumption, guided by my own research that affirms its cardiovascular benefits and the absence of any previous chest discomfort. At this juncture, a dose of Xanax, its potency eluding my memory, was administered, a gentle salve to assuage lingering restlessness, as my heart continued to beat with a mild elevation, hovering in the low 100s.
+18:00: Satiated by a delightful repast at Wendy's (oh, the unparalleled bliss of their chocolate milkshake, surpassing all other fast-food establishments!), and armed with the comprehensive test results, the time for departure arrived. Discharged from the hospital's embrace, my wife assumed the role of the gentle chauffeur, guiding me homeward, a sanctuary awaiting our return.
CONCLUSION As the gentle assurance of the ENT resonated within my wife's heart, the veil of intoxication gradually receded, bringing me back to the comforting embrace of reality. Approximately six hours had elapsed, most of which were spent serenely reclined upon the bed, relaying the chronicles of my journey to my beloved wife and mother, now lucid and aware. Today, an overwhelming love and gratitude for the gift of life courses through my veins. This morning, I uttered the words "I love you" to my wife with an unprecedented frequency, to which she responded joyously, exclaiming, "This is wonderful! I adore it when you express your love so abundantly!" I strive to hold onto this profound sentiment, hoping it transcends the realms of mere afterglow, enabling me to shower affection upon my wife and all sentient beings. It feels as though I have been granted a second chance, a brush with the periphery of a potential near-death experience. What was that? Was it the influence of THC, exacerbating my existing anxiety and eliciting a common reaction when individuals consume gummies within the confines of hospitals, as the staff shared? Or does it bear the characteristics of an entirely distinct encounter? It is worth mentioning that a genetic test revealed the presence of a gene associated with an augmented susceptibility to psychosis through heightened utilization of cannabis products.
Did I venture into the realm of a psychotic break, or was it solely the product of the psychedelic substance? Did the ENT refer to the Chinese balloon as a "spike/spice balloon" due to suspicions of it being laced with a synthetic substance? The debate persists, hinging on whether I traversed the domains of hallucination, a glimpse into the beyond, or a profound ego dissolution. Yet, at the core of my being, I remain steadfast in my belief that a comforting white light awaits us, a realm attainable through the embodiment of kindness and benevolence towards our fellow beings. My faith in a divine presence has been irrevocably reaffirmed.
REFLECTION MONTHS LATER For those who serendipitously stumble upon this account... An enduring afterglow manifested, suffusing my being with an overwhelming love for the world. Never before had I experienced such an intense surge of affection towards my wife, as every gaze upon her triggered an inexorable impulse to exclaim, "I LOVE YOU!" A profound sense of love emanated from the depths of my chest with each proclamation. Yet, as the days waned, the enchantment gradually faded. Curiously, I observed a peculiar reaction to encounters with malevolence, particularly in the realm of online video games. Instances of unkindness and aggression left me bewildered, incapable of comprehending the absurdity of such behavior. The very notion of harboring anger over trivial matters in a world teeming with opportunities for mirth and laughter struck me as preposterous. Indeed, I found myself convulsed with laughter, consumed by the sheer ludicrousness of anger directed towards a mere game. During this four-day afterglow, I sensed a profound connection to a genuine near-death experience, wherein the veil lifted, revealing the true nature of our earthly existence. This realm, I perceived, is meant to be a realm of joy and laughter, where anger and hostility are incongruous intrusions, blemishing our shared journey. Is there anyone else who has experienced a similar four-day afterglow subsequent to ingesting a gummy?

2023.06.09 19:11 sedimentary-j Ten Tiny Reviews

Books that were not for me

Carmilla (le Fanu) I enjoyed the first half of this tale, which is one of the earliest vampire works and an inspiration for Dracula (as well as being pretty lesbian, and in 1872!). But by the midway point, when it's completely obvious what's going on to everyone but the protagonist, the book started dragging and I skimmed much of the latter half just to get it over with. Read this if: You're interested in the origins of the vampire phenomemon
Even Though I Knew the End (Polk) This is a historical detective story with angels and demons. If you took the combined vibes of 1930s Chicago, a Catholic cathedral, a blood-daubed summoning circle, and an underground lesbian bar, you'd have this book. It's quite short, and—perhaps due in part to the lack of space for character development—it wasn't really my thing, but I did think the ending was great, and gutsy. Read this if: You love an old-timey detective story
The Bone Ships (Barker) I spent the first half of this book declaiming to my mother's cat that the author had chosen the wrong main character, since our protagonist does nothing but what his far-more-interesting captain tells him to do. (Thankfully, it gets better in the second half.) Other than that, there's almost nothing to dislike... it's the book equivalent of Mr. Rogers... except that I didn't find much to get excited about, either, and struggled to finish. Read this if: You want an alright nautical adventure with an alright protagonist

Books that were fine

Mordew (Pheby) This book is problematic. Not in the contents, which are merely disgusting and horrifying, but in the way it's written. It's agonizingly slow. Character motivations don't always make sense, and the guidelines for magic seem to be "whatever's plot-convenient." However, if you're looking for something that reads like Charles Dickens took too many mushrooms then had a lie-down in a malarial swamp, this book is your man. Read this if: You have a thing for urchins with terrible morals
The Prey of Gods (Drayden) As I once said about The Poppy War, it's difficult to figure out who's supposed to be the audience for this book. A science fantasy set in South Africa, it has coming-of-age child protagonists alongside adult POVs that include spontaneous orgasms. I will say that the book often surprised me, which I love. But similar to Mordew, the characters' changing motivations on a whim to service the plot kept it from being a winner. Read this if: You like books that don't fit neatly into categories
Senlin Ascends (Bancroft) Dude, where's my wife? Our hero Senlin loses his wife and... spends the rest of the book trying to find her? No, surprisingly. He makes a good start, but soon loses his internal compass and ends up in a series of quagmires that he doesn't seem to have much urgency to get out of. This killed both the book's tension and any interest in going on to book two, especially since I didn't particularly connect with Senlin as a character. However, I will say the prose is great, and contains the most creative-yet-accurate metaphors of any book I have ever read. Read this if: You hate a lackluster metaphor

Books I enjoyed

Under Heaven (Kay) The story didn't move me as much as the other Kay books I've read, and I think it has issues in terms of structure and other choices. Still, lackluster Kay is better than many (most?) other writers' best efforts. Also, it has less romance/sex than the other books of his I've read. This was unfortunate for me, but if that aspect has kept you away from Kay's work, you might actually enjoy this one. Read this if: You're hungering to spend some time in a Tang-Dynasty-inspired world
Some by Virtue Fall (Rowland) Echoes of Shakespeare haunt this comedic book, which is about a theater troupe trying to survive despite empty coffers and a rival troupe with zero scruples. I enjoyed it mainly for the main character, who behaved badly in all the ways I would never have the guts to. If you get vicarious enjoyment from transgressions—or if you were a theater kid, and want to cringe in remembrance—this is the book for you. Honestly, I hope the author writes another starring this character. Read this if: You love theater, Shakespeare, and teh gays
Piranesi (Clarke) This is a perfectly nice book and I certainly enjoyed reading it, but it didn't wow me or anything, and I haven't thought about it once since I read it. So I don't understand why it's as popular as it is. But there's also nothing wrong with the book. You could do a lot worse? Read this if: You enjoy mysteries, or truly good-hearted protagonists

Favorites

Siren Queen (Vo) I tore through this book, which follows the strivings of a Chinese-American starlet in an alternative golden age Hollywood that's suffused with dark magic and danger. Like Vo's The Chosen and The Beautiful, it's a very sensual work, and if it wasn't a bit over the top I'd say I can still taste the cigarette smoke and champagne. I can't wait for her next effort. Read this if: You're a fan of golden age Hollywood, creepy atmosphere, or outsider protagonists

DNFs

The Forever Sea (Johnson) - I won this book in a raffle. It has a gorgeous cover. Unfortunately the writing is quite straightforward, and I lost interest pretty quickly when my brain had nothing to chew on.
The Worm Ouroboros (Eddison) - I was gifted this and wanted to like it, but found it just as distant and dull as I find most old books. Sorry dad.
The Bruising of Qilwa (Jamnia) - This was a book club book that was not my speed.
The Coward (Aryan) - Another book club read. Did not like the writing.
The Iron Dragon's Daughter (Swanwick) - Unique but way too meandering.

2023.06.09 19:01 WhatCanIMakeToday GameStop's 10-Q DRS Numbers: Bullish

GameStop's 10-Q DRS Numbers: Bullish
GameStop's most recent 10-Q revealed a very interesting and very bullish information with the number of shares held by Cede & Co going down!
GameStop's 10-K filed on March 28, 2023 GameStop's 10-Q filed today, June 7, 2023
As of March 22, 2023, there were 197,058 record holders of our Class A Common Stock. Excluding the approximately 228.7 million shares of our Class A Common Stock held by Cede & Co on behalf of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (or approximately 75% of our outstanding shares), approximately 76.0 million shares of our Class A Common Stock were held by record holders as of March 22, 2023 (or approximately 25% of our outstanding shares. As of June 1, 2023, there were approximately 304,751,243 shares of our Class A common stock outstanding. Of those outstanding shares, approximately 228.1 million were held by Cede & Co on behalf of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (or approximately 75% of our outstanding shares) and approximately 76.6 million shares of our Class A common stock were held by registered holders with our transfer agent (or approximately 25% of our outstanding shares) as of June 1, 2023.
Let's bring back some context from my prior post, GME 10-K: A Turning Point, and expand on it by first charting the history of GameStop's DRS numbers.
https://preview.redd.it/921624w8yt4b1.png?width=4186&format=png&auto=webp&s=746db6cad0a0f8184302302aedf45fffb55e0857
This is beautiful because we're seeing a classic S-curve in our data. Let me draw it for you and explain.
https://preview.redd.it/penl1bndyt4b1.png?width=4248&format=png&auto=webp&s=98f9a915a0e051c534c7d767085de25e88645ef0
An S-curve is very important when considering new ideas. Basically, an S-curve represents how fast an idea spreads. In the beginning, ideas are new and held by only a few so the growth curve is slow. Then, at some point, ideas take off and we see rapid growth. And, finally, there's a saturation point reached where growth slows down again. These "phases of innovation" are well documented:
The adoption rate of innovations is non-linear; it is slow at first, then rapidly rises before flattening out again as it reaches market saturation.
Harnessing the Power of S-Curves
There are many theories of change, but one that is particularly relevant to innovation is centred on the S-curve. It is a way of depicting incremental, disruptive and radical innovation.
...
The S-curve can also be used to depict the diffusion of innovations in a culture over time. First described by Everett Rogers in the early 1960s, diffusion is the process by which an innovation is communicated and taken up over time. Rogers’ work is important because it emphasises that the innovation itself is not the only determinant of its ‘success’. There must also be communication channels, time and a social system in place to enable the innovation to be used and adopted more and more widely. Rogers also identifies the different categories of adopters: innovators, early adopters, majority (further subdivided into early and late) and laggards (Rogers, 1962).
[Open University: Innovation and the S-curve]
When we look at the DRS numbers, we can see the classic S curve. The key recognition is that some shares were already directly registered before apes figured DRS out. Perhaps with the benefit of hindsight, it's obvious that no early whale apes directly registered 5 million shares because apes are generally not that rich. ComputerShared.net even has a Shareholder Distribution chart where you can see that, even now, all apes sampled have fewer than 32,768 shares.
https://preview.redd.it/17ugkzgyot4b1.png?width=1251&format=png&auto=webp&s=e8d1dc706135698e4a7a403a4b6b5704c31c9767
While may never know how many shares were held by the ~1,600 record holders in 2021 or who held them, we do know that there were at least 1,600 record holders and they, by definition, held directly registered shares. Then, as of Oct 30, 2021, 5.2M shares were directly registered after a few early apes started direct registering their shares.
As more apes started to directly register their shares, we see a rapid growth phase between 2021 and 2022. After the July 2022 splividend, we start to see DRS numbers tailing off as the idea of DRS matures signifying an acceptance of DRS amongst apes.

Bullish Turning Points

Looking back at the history of DRS numbers, we see two major changes in shareholder reporting: Oct 2021 and March 2023. As I noted before (twice),
These SEC forms are filed every quarter or year and people are lazy. The easiest way to start off a filing is to simply copy the one filed before (i.e., template) and update things like dates and numbers. So why the change? Wut mean?
  • Before Oct 2021, GameStop reported the number of record holders.
  • Between Oct 2021 and Oct 2022, GameStop reported shares directly registered with their transfer agent.
  • March 2023, GameStop reported the number of record holders, number of shares held by Cede & Co, and number of shares held by record holders.
  • June 2023, GameStop reports the number of shares outstanding, number of shares held by Cede & Co, and number of shares held by registered holders with our transfer agent.
The Oct 2021 change is pretty clearly a result of apes directly registering their shares leading to a noticeable increase of directly registered shares.
The March 2023 number is interesting because you'll notice that the Jan 2023 10-K reporting was significantly delayed for nearly two months from the end of Jan (see Jan 29, 2022) to March 22, 2023. This delay suggests the SEC didn't like what GameStop submitted and required GameStop to modify their filing before it became public. I think GameStop was going to put the discrepancy into their 10-K and the SEC said "Uhh, no. Please change that."^[1] (Remember, there shouldn't ever be more shares reported as held than shares outstanding; which is why proxy over voting has been "addressed" by adjusting the vote counts.)
To give you an example of this problem from my prior DD, End Game: DTC and NSCC are screwed as the DTC just proved shareholders should Directly Register Shares (DRS) and End Game Part Deux: Problems at the DTCC plus The Bigger Picture, we saw from 🛏️🛁 bankruptcy filings that their Transfer Agent reported Cede and Co holds more shares (776M) than there are outstanding (739M) -- which should be impossible.
Sources can't be linked (contains the ticker symbol) but can be found in the other sub
If a bankruptcy judge didn't order 🛏️🛁 to file this information with the Court, nobody would ever know that a company has 739M shares outstanding (with some directly registered) while the DTC and DTCC are circulating 776M shares of that company for trading (plus rehypothecation)!
Yet, here we are. And now we understand why the SEC is rushing to push through so many regulations simply to not look as bad when shit hits the fan. ("So, SEC, a bunch of regards on the Internet figured this out with publicly available information and you didn't? Even when the SEC was directly made aware of issues, again?")
Turning back to GME's 10-Q numbers, GameStop reported 76.6M shares held by Registered Holders^[2] and 228.1M shares held by Cede & Co on behalf of the DTCC. We know what ComputerShare, the Transfer Agent, is reporting. But due to the fog of war, we don't know how many shares the DTC and DTCC are circulating for trading or how many beneficially owned rights to shares there are.
What we know and don't know
Which means we can think of GME's 10-Q filing as a sort of CYA. GameStop has put on record there are 228.1M shares recorded by the Transfer Agent (ComputerShare) as allocated to Cede & Co and the DTC/DTCC. As far as GameStop, ComputerShare, and the SEC are concerned, any securities issues after that are problems within the Big Orange Box of BS (Beneficially-owned Shares).
The flattening of the S-curve happened somewhere around Oct 2022 and March 2023 when, all of a sudden, apes only saw an increase of 0.5M shares directly registered in the Oct 2022 DRS number followed by a 4.2M increase in March 2023. I think what happened for the Oct 2022 DRS number is institutions withdrew their ~5M directly registered shares to Cede & Co to (1) try and make it look like apes were leaving and (2) put more shares into Cede & Co for circulation.^[3] A few apes have come up with some recent evidence this could the case (by reviewing the ledger!) per a post on the DRS sub by lawsondt (with confirmation in the comments, 🫡)
https://preview.redd.it/kcottjzra05b1.png?width=675&format=png&auto=webp&s=361ce4adaa8b1f58b39c88e0d4113d0b98bf6b47
Remember, apes are generally not whales so there's no way apes started off with 5.2M shares directly registered. On the other hand, institutions have the money to do so and some institutions probably wanted to have shares in their name. But there are no institutions on the list as of April 2023 anymore which strongly suggests apes are amazing regards who directly registered more shares than the institutions pulled out.
And now, institutions are out of directly registered shares. No more DRS rug pulls.

The Number of Shares Held By The DTC Is Consistently Shrinking

So when I look at the 71 calendar days between March 28, 2023 and June 7, 2023 (49 trading days), ComputerShare recorded 600k more shares held by registered ownership. That's 8,000+ shares per calendar day or 12,000+ shares per trading day removed from the BS box and locked away.
This is what the power of slow and steady erosion looks like
Cede & Co's holdings are consistently shrinking and institutions no longer have any directly registered shares.
IMPORTANT POINT ABOUT BENEFICIAL SHARES (BS)
According to the SEC, beneficial rights to shares held by the DTC are split amongst all the beneficial shareholder interests.
Each participant or pledgee having an interest in securities of a given issue credited to its account has a pro rata interest in the securities of that issue held by DTC.
[SR-DTC-2003-02 34-47978 (June 4, 2003)]
From another DD, Estimating Excess GME Share Liquidity From Borrow Data & Churn Factor, I covered a 2010 IMF Working Paper (The (sizable) Role of Rehypothecation in the Shadow Banking System) that found rehypothecation in the shadow banking system resulted in a churn factor of 4.
https://preview.redd.it/5kv4pllbxv4b1.png?width=1368&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2c76ac21a828fbe7aca78b4ac1517c36e671288
A churn factor of 4 means each GME share is rehypothecated into 4 beneficial rights to 1 GME share. Thus, according to the SEC, each GME share in a brokerage is worth 1/4 of what you think it's worth. Less if the churn factor is higher. (Easily higher as some countries have no limits on rehypothecation.)
Simply changing how shares are held from beneficially-owned shares (BS) to directly registered shares (DRS) automatically increases how much of the Company you own. This is true for any Company where shareholders may suspect the DTC has more shares on their books or in circulation than they should. With the shadow banking system rehypothecating assets around in circles, it's likely every BS share traded under the DTCC is worth less a DRS counterpart. Thus, every shareholder is basically incentivized to own a bigger portion of each Company by simply Direct Registering Shares to get more ownership for the same price. Which is exactly what the DTC and SEC said shareholders should do:
DTC pointed out that if beneficial owners believe that their interests are best protected by not having their shares subject to book-entry transfer at DTC, then they can instruct their broker-dealer to execute a withdrawal-by-transfer, which will remove the securities from DTC and transfer them to the shareholder in certificated form.
SR-DTC-2003-02 34-47978 (June 4, 2003)
If I get 4x more ownership by executing a DRS withdrawal-by-transfer out of the DTC, then clearly the DTC is not protecting my interests and I should execute a DRS withdrawal-by-transfer as suggested by the DTC and SEC.

BACK TO THE S-CURVE

Remember: adoption rate is non-linear. Meaning all the comments about it taking 84 years to lock the float at this rate are irrelevant because they assume a constant linear DRS rate at the current 8,000+ per calendar day (12,000+ per trading day) rate.
Instead, we should consider the current 8,000+ per calendar day (12,000+ per trading day) rate as a floor for what apes are accomplishing as a baseline. Progress and adoption are typically a series of S-curves as ideas are spread, adopted by a group, reach maturity in that group, spread more, adopted by others, reach maturity in the new group, and spread more again.
https://www.open.edu/openlearn/nature-environment/organisations-environmental-management-and-innovation/content-section-1.7
As a baseline, the current 8,000+ per calendar day (12,000+ per trading day) is phenomenal because these shares are getting locked away every single day despite everything Wall St has tried including:
  • incredibly high inflation taking away money from investments for living expenses,
  • media constantly bashing meme stocks, and
  • an endless stream of rule proposals and comments from the financial industry designed to screw retail investors.
I look forward to upcoming S-curves increasing our DRS numbers as more people learn about how our markets function. I know it will happen because it is inevitable. As shares are directly registered with the Transfer Agent, fewer shares will be held by the DTC which reduces the value of the remaining beneficial shares. And, in order to keep the price down, more beneficial rights to the shrinking number shares held by the DTC will be sold which further dilutes the value of those BS shares. As the ownership gain from directly registering shares increases, more shares will be directly registered which further speeds up this virtuous cycle (a virtuous cycle is like a vicious cycle, but for good things).
The incentives and self-interests align in such a way that the invisible hand ensures people will DRS as they learn it's more valuable to them.
Thank you to every ape out there contributing to this shared knowledge base. From the lit buildings at midnight to the memes and the amazing DD, including the relentless and rigorous peer review^[4], we are all educating each other about how our securities markets function.
[1] This theory is also consistent with some Trust Me Bro that I speculated about.
[2] Why the change from "record holders" to "registered holders"? Maybe this is to address the confusion around the Heat Lamp Theory? From the context, I suspect Book or Plan are both counted by ComputerShare as Directly Registered Shares falling under the "Registered-ownership shares" category on ComputerShare's FAQ.
[3] Notably, if you consider an adjustment for the Oct 2022 onwards numbers for the shares institutions pulled out, you'd get a much cleaner and smoother transition at the top with +5.5M, +4.2M, +0.6M and so on... which makes for a prettier S-curve that one might expect to see.
[4] Let's be realistic, it's the Internet. We're all basically like this
https://preview.redd.it/rnzqkqi7m05b1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=912087114699d995b1c8d9b52be6429daecb7e81

2023.06.09 17:39 IrinaSophia Saint Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria (June 9th)

His tongue, having blasphemed the Mother of God, was overtaken by punishment -- in it there developed worms.
