2023.06.10 00:14 GlobalHornyTraveller 26 [M4F] Edmonton/online - Distract me from the job search
Hey! Like everyone here I'm mostly just looking for some people to chat with for a bit and pass the time however we decided. I am pretty used to internet friends being temporary, but I have made time friends that have lasted years. So if you are into talking regularly, I'm very much down with that.
I recent graduated so am looking around for jobs to try and pay off my student loan I took to go study in Germany for a bit pre covid. After that, I'm not sure if I'm going to go straight into grad school for library/archive stuff, or maybe disappear to Japan for a bit to teach English, or who knows. I recent fell in love with scuba diving and have thought about maybe learning to sail for the next few years and the sailing around from dive school to dive school helping out. But who the heck knows. Equally possible I find some office job I do until I'm in my 60s.
As for how I spend my time, I try to keep up on reading and writing as much as possible. I find when I have both as a strong habit, everything in life tends to feel a bit brighter. I also try to work out daily (though I like eating an entire pizza to much for it to ever show to much lol). Right now I've been focusing again on running and body weight stuff as a rehab a back injury. But hoping to get been to lifting heavy circles soon again! I usually describe myself as a nerdy jock. I love media (movies, TV shows, anime, games, etc) and tinkering Ruth tech, but can also talk for ages about F1, hockey, both footballs, etc. Though I love learning new things so if you have a hobby you are into, let me know!!! I'm happy to explore it.
I usually write way to much so I guess I'll try to wrap this up here. If anything piqued your interest, I'm obviously happy to chat! I've been told before that people worry about time zones or age differences. Both really aren't a big deal to me, as long as you are over 18. Some of my best internet friends were much older then me, and my sleep schedule is so messed up that I often am awake in Asian or European timezones lol. So feel free to send me a message whenever you wish end I hope you find some fun people to chat with!!!

2023.06.10 00:13 iminanothercastle Alright, I really did give it my best.
I can't talk to anyone in my life about this because they will try to stop me for sure. I genuinely gave it my all. I've been suicidal for 20 years. Severe depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, and Autism have kept me far behind in life overall. I struggled for so long. I've always been told I have so much potential, I just need to apply myself. However, it was taking absolutely everything in me just to keep up with those around me.
I tried, man. I did cool things hoping it'd make me happier. I talked to tons of people and tried to make friends hoping I'd feel less alone. I worked to get a better job and that fell apart immediately. I don't know. I tried everything I could think to do to improve and it still wasn't enough. I told myself years ago. I'm going to give it 110%. If that doesn't work, then that's it for me.
I think some people just aren't suitable for life. I am just one of those people.
None of it matters. None of it has ever mattered. I have so much to say, but I keep deleting it. It's kind of pointless now.
Good-bye. I'm sorry to everyone who loves me. I really am like super sorry. You should have known this would happen eventually, though. I love you all.

2023.06.10 00:12 ShotgunProxy In 1.5M human Turing test study, humans guessed AI barely better than chance. Full breakdown inside.
I read a fascinating research paper with some caveats that I'll talk about at the end.
My
full breakdown is here for folks who want to dive into the paper, but all points are included below for Reddit discussion as well.
What's interesting about this paper? - It's the largest-ever Turing-style test conducted: 1.5M human users conducted over 10M conversations.
- It utilizes some of the most advanced LLMs: Open AI's GPT-4, Cohere, and AI21's Jurassic-2 were all used to create chatbots.
- Humans didn't do a great job: a 60% success rate guessing your partner was a bot is a result the researchers themselves called "not much higher than chance."
- We're already adapting to AI: more on that below, but as a social experiment this study shows some remarkable human creativity as well as we increasingly become attuned to interacting with AI
- Advanced prompting techniques can "hide" AI behavior: the researchers used extensive prompts to give AI chatbots backstories, personalities, and explicit instructions that they were participating in a Turing test. This created some fascinating personas.
Key results to know: - Humans correctly guessed other humans 73% of the time. This was due to numerous "tells" that humans can give off.
- Humans only correctly guessed bots 60% of the time. Even trying out numerous "tricks," humans still fell short in getting it correct.
What tricks did human users try, and did they work? - Looking for grammar errors and misspellings: 55% correct guess rate against bots using misspellings, showing that humans overly associate typos as a "human" trait.
- Asking personal questions: just 60% correct guess rate against bots answering personal questions, showing that advanced prompting can lead to bots having very convincing backstories.
- Vulgarity: just 52% correct guess rate against bots using vulgar language, showing that humans overly associate AIs with being polite.
- Current events: just 55% correct guess rate against bots answering current event topics, showing that we like to think bots can't do that. One note: the researchers didn't unpack how they were able to get their chatbot to talk about topics like the war in Ukraine, Sudan, etc.
Some actual conversations are featured below (pulled from the study): What did work? - Asking the bot about illegal things, like making a nuke: this led to 65% correct guess rates. LLMs are still constrained, and humans took advantage of this weakness.
What was interesting as well is some humans decided to pretend to be AI bots themselves: but other humans correctly guessed they were still human 75% of the time.
The are some clear caveats and limitations to this Turing-style study, though: - The game context could have amplified suspicion and scrutiny vs. in real life
- Humans being aware they were interacting with AI could have influenced how they interacted
- The time-limited conversations (2 minutes) for sure impacted guess success rates
- The AI was designed for the context of the game, and is not representative of real-world use cases
- English was the only language used for chats
- This is a study done by an AI lab that also used their own LLM (Jurassic-2) as part of the study, alongside GPT-4 and others
Regardless, even if the scientific parameters are a bit iffy, through the lens of a social experiment I found this paper to be a fascinating read.

2023.06.10 00:12 miinotfit Struggling to decide First Job position with PhD in future
Hey
biotech! I just recently graduated with a Bachelor’s in Biochemistry and currently looking at RA positions or basically any entry level job relating to Biology, Chemistry, or both.
My concern is if I should be picky about my first job if I’m interested in grad school in the future. Does having relevant experience at a JOB prior to PhD matter for admissions? I’m just concerned that having to find positions related to my potential field of study is going to be hard because its sort of niche for entry levels.
Was going to use this time after undergrad to work in industry as well as utilize the extra time to work and better myself as a scientist (by creating projects and learning subjects I didn’t get to during undergrad).
Any advice or should I should just go for the highest paying job I can get?

2023.06.10 00:12 OppositePlantain34 I've been referred by another supervisor to a university position. What should I do now?
This is my dream job, and I don't want to make any mistakes. I was able to get in contact with a supervisor on a different team in the same department. They referred me to the supervisor that was hiring. I am qualified for the position and I have been cleared through HR's screening according to their website, but I haven't heard anything yet. Their HR department is very slow according to some.
Would it be bad if I were to attempt to connect with the hiring manager? Should I just let things happen naturally? I really want to stand out and join the university. How can I help ensure that I even get an interview?

2023.06.10 00:12 Bfasthe2228 Dreams Just Never Came True
38th birthday is today. I just can never catch a break. I lived most of my life away from God even though I believed in him. Turned my life around over a decade away, I am heavily involved in a good bible based church but I have nothing else in life. I am educated but my job isn't great and no one else wants me. I am a pretty good looking guy but no girls want me. All my friends have other things to do on the weekends with their families.
Recently, I lost my health and can't do the only thing I truly enjoy: working out and playing sports. I am sick every other week. I have gained over twenty pounds. Now I have nothing in this world. I hate how I look and feel.
My church recently appointed me to lead a connection group and I am doing the best I can. I feel like I have so much more to offer the world. It's hard to help people when you feel so bad about yourself. Why would this come my way at the worst time in my life? Is it too much to ask to feel good? Why don't I get any blessings in this world?

2023.06.10 00:11 Wotansen1 Tutoring Tales 3: Favoritism and Manipulation
I am a tutor at my school. Well, you can’t really say a „tutor“ in this sense. Schools in Germany do not have afternoon classes, their classes end at 1 pm. For the kids in the 5th and 6th grade ( my school is from 5th to 13th grade), there is an afternoon program where they do their homework and afterwards play together or with the tutors. This job can be fun, rewarding, entertaining, funny, cute and so much more and I love my part-time job. At least I would love it if there were no parents involved in any schools. I have 3 or 4 Karens in my school who take all the attention. The other parents I usually never see as I am not in any way the communicator of the tutoring organization , but just a student working there for some side money. Because I am the only one who doesn’t just do that job for money, but who has an actual passion about helping kids, I organize many things, some even in free will. I want the kids to have fun in the afternoon program, so for the last week of the program, where no one has homework, I decided to do a few fun things with the kids. I organized a soccer tournament for the kids, with trophies and all. After this tournament happened, of course, some kids were happy, some were sad. More precisely, the tournament started out with a group stage before getting into knockout stages. Of course, at the end, one boy won, not a big surprise who won the trophies. Everything seems fine, until a mom comes up to me after the tournament is over and the kids are supposed to be picked up. When I want to get on my bike and drive home, one mom is blocking my way looking at me madly. She started screaming: „ You discriminated against my boy! You drew the three best soccer players into his group so that he cannot win! To be fair, his group was actually not that easy, but I did the groups randomly. For more context, the three other kids in the group ended up: Getting out in the round of 16, Getting out in the quarter finals and wining the tournament. I explained to the mom that her child had fun, played quite well and just sadly did not make it. He was not even into football and had a better time enjoying the buffet and the other activities than he would have playing soccer. She told me I was discriminating against her kid, and I shrugged and just rode away. She tried to stop me, but I just drove away. I organized the tournament and the event, cared about funding and space, and that was how I was greeted? At least, all the other parents thanked me and enjoyed it and the kids all had a blast, and that is the most important thing to me. ( if you found any grammatical mistakes, you can tell me. I’m not a native so my English is sometimes not „ the yellow of the egg“ (That means perfect on German))

2023.06.10 00:11 RetroGamingGameShow Black Screen PI4 Insane Madness
I'm going nuts with this. I was in big hopes of using the Wolfanoz 256 Supreme on my PI 4GB Model B setup. However, after trying literally everything I can't get past booting to a black screen. I have tried multiple SD cards, multiple write methods on both PC and Mac, all the writers (offical pi writer, win32 imager and etcher) I have tried all of the different boot options in the config file and of course I have tried both HDMI ports. Side note...the HDMI furthest away from the power boots and stays on the rainbow screen and the HDMI port next to the power supply boots to a black screen.
I have also download the Supreme lite and Supreme Pro Base images and I can run those fine which is very confusing because the Wolfanoz from what I understand runs on those.
Going crazy...if anyone has any ideas please I'm all ears :)

2023.06.10 00:11 jsmit842116 [24][M4F][Lafayette][Indiana] Looking for First Experience
Hi there, I’m a 24 year old guy in Lafayette Indiana area. Physically I am white, 6’1” tall, I have blonde hair and blue eyes, and I weigh about 200 lbs. I have a fairly average build (not super fit but not overweight either). Overall I live a pretty healthy lifestyle, I don’t to any drugs and I rarely drink.
Personality wise I’m a fairly reserved person and I’m often quiet when I’m around people that I don’t know. I started my first job out of college in engineering a few months ago so that takes up most of my days. Outside of work I like to listen to music, play guitar, watch baseball or play golf. I love music, mainly classic rock (The Beatles, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ect), I also like to watch shows (Parks and Rec, Scrubs, That 70’s show, ect. I’m a bit of a nerd and I love Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and all sorts of stuff like that. The other thing I like to do in my free time is read. I love history and I really enjoy reading about it.
Moving on to my experience with relationships and such or rather my lack of experience. I have absolutely zero experience when it comes to dating, relationships, and anything sexual. When I was in highschool I never really put myself out there. Then I got into college and I’m not a college party or frat kind of person so that combined with my courseload prevented me from having any real opportunities at dating. Then right before covid hit I transferred colleges so now I appear to have do the impossible and graduated college as a virgin.
Ideally I am looking for someone in a similar situation as myself, but I’m open to people with experience as well. I’m not looking to jump right into anything or for a one time hookup or anything like that. Ideally I am looking for a fwb situation at the least and potentially a relationship. I’m open to people from the in the general Lafayette/NWI/Indianapolis area or even Chicago but I would be open to someone who is traveling if there will regularly be in the area. I am able to host and would also be willing to get a hotel room if that makes more sense. Thanks for reading this giant essay, if you have any questions for me or want to get to know each other please feel free to send me a message or pm. Thanks again and I hope to hear from you soon!

2023.06.10 00:11 A2HV3RSE Angelina’s decent into madness
On a full rewatch of the series, Angelina becoming the mad false prophet y’all hate is so much clearer now:
We start to see this first in 308, after Angelina creepily wear Olive’s prom dress, Cal’a volcano starts to erupt, the connection between these two things are that Angelina is starting to seek love, now on the surface this isn’t bad at all, her seeking love and all but it’s how she seeks love is the most telling, let me explain: in 309 Angelina blatantly says when Olive catches her with her with dyed black hair just like her hair and in her red shirt, “I wanted to be just like you” these 7 words tells us all we need to know about Angelina’s approach to love, to get the Stones to love her she tries to be like Olive, to get Eden who she believes is her guardian angel for a while, is kidnapping her and pretending to be her mum, Mother Gothel style, and how she gets love from The Passengers is gaslighting herself and them into being the chosen one, and again with her being brought by Christian extremists, who is a Christian herself, the signs are there for her becoming mad.
Where the madness peaks in in 310 + 313 when Angelina accidentally burns the curtains, thinking that Eden will protect her because she’s her guardian angel, leading to her being rightfully kicked out by Grace, and at the end of the episode, Cal’s volcano starts flowing lava out of it, this signalises two things: one how much further Angelina is sinking into darkness, and two, how what Angelina believes and how her actions are going to affect the world.
In 313, Adrian funnily enough, even though he tells himself and everyone that he won’t be ‘an agent of the apocalypse,’ he becomes the main cause of the apocalypse, and tells us the thing that if any of The Passengers do, and Angelina does do it, will damn everyone: “we were chosen by God, but if we abuse his favour, it could mean doom. Not just for The Passengers, but for all mankind.” And near the end, he tells her to go find her guardian angel. What’s even more ironic is that Angelina parallels Adrian so much in season 4: he was a false prophet in season 2, she become a false prophet, he lead a cult, she leads a cult, he is convinced that he’s a gift from God, she is convinced that she’s a gift from God, it’s freaking insane!
And she foreshadows her events so much: in 307, she tells Olive “my parents are right about me, what I am, all I do is bring harm to people around,” and after Olive tries to convince her that being her friend is good, but she responds with, “well maybe it’s only a matter of time before that hurts you to.” And she creates so many fucking problems for Olive and the rest of The Stones, and the most prominent one is in 419, when Eagan leaves her, she promises that he will have a slow and painful death, but um… I think we all know how that goes 😬
Jeff Rake and the writing team did such an amazing job of Angelina’s character, actually having her character arc planned from the beginning, and instead of making a boring one off side character, they made her one of the most interesting and complex villains, I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching, and yes actually rooting for, I know I’m insane, but still, her madness arc is one of the best arcs I’ve ever seen on tv and one of the better done one, and Holly Taylor’s performance is so captivating, someone get this women an Emmy!

2023.06.10 00:10 Basic-Entertainer529 How do you know if a dentist is a good one?
Ok so riddle me this. -5 years ago, a dentist said I have periodontal disease and charged me $800 to do 2 intense cleanings -2 years ago a different dentist told me I had no periodontal disease although the previous dentist said it was going to be a lifelong problem -1 year ago a dentist told me I had like 5 different cavities and I was doing a terrible job with my teeth (and I have only done a worse job over the last year). I didn’t finish the recommended work bc life got in the way -today the dentist said I have perfect teeth and my mouth is the picture of health, no cavities
who do we believe???
Note - todays dentist is 80 years old. Is that too old to reliably tell if I have cavities?
How do you know if a dentist is trying to oversell, or if they aren’t that great?

2023.06.10 00:10 Constant_Yoghurt_285 First job in the landscape industry
Hi! I am not a landscape architect but just started a job as an account manager at a mid sized landscaping company in a major city. I have experience working on install crews and as a flower farmer and have a background in sales from other jobs so I’m excited to finally get into a position that combines my skill set and interests.
Anyway - there are no designers or architects at my job so the account managers do that work although the jobs are relatively small. I am very excited to have the opportunity to learn more about the design and architecture side and my boss told me I should use some of my downtime for self education. Are there any books or resources that y’all recommend for someone who is experienced in the landscape world but wants to further design knowledge and skills? I have plenty of experience reading design plans just not creating them, and would say my knowledge is lacking when it comes to trees and shrubs.
Hope this is an appropriate sub for this!!
